So, the VHS collection I brought to this apartment -- which I can now actually watch -- contains such eclectic content as...
Lexx Season One (Also know as Tales From A Parallel Universe), the four feature length movies that preceded the Lexx TV series.
Kill Bill, Volumes 1 & 2. I believe these were the last tapes I ever purchased at my local Blockbuster.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, which I have since repurchased on Blu-ray.
The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, which I have since repurchased on DVD.
Astro Boy, Volume 9, which holds several episodes of the anime. This is still in the cellophane, I bought it from my local comic shop when the owner was going through some personal issues and was essentially using the shop as an ongoing garage sale to empty out his house.
Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace. A friend gave this to me when he was clearing out his old media while he was moving. I do believe I have never actually watched this tape, since by the time he passed it to me I had sunk deep into my “The Prequels SUCK!” era.
Jurassic Park, the original. I’ve actually got no memories associated with this tape at all, and until I started sorting a few days ago I had no idea it was even in my closet. When did I get this?
Aladdin, which has the honor of somehow being a Blockbuster tape (I guess one time when me and my siblings were kids we forgot to return it?). Aladdin is also the first movie that I recall seeing in theaters, so this is a big Nostalgia hit for me.
Superman II, this is the one tape in a fancy plastic case (The rest are either in plain carboard, or no case at all). I watched this tape before I even saw the original Superman: The Movie, so this really lay the foundation for Superman for me.
And the pièce de résistance, the Original Star Wars Trilogy. I picked this up at the Dayton Hamvention several years back, when I was desperate for any way to view the unaltered Original Trilogy. Since then I’ve found various HD options online, but this way I get to own it.
Tomorrow afternoon I may go to my childhood home and dig around the basement for old cassettes that are still down there (I can semi-solidly remember having episodes of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon and The Adventures of Pete & Pete somewhere).

Rules: Tag 9 people you’d like to know better/catch up with.
I was tagged by @starsandskies Thank you so much! <3
Last song: Absolution by The Pretty Reckless (I’ve been writing my muse lately and this is the last song I listened to before taking a break from writing)
Last movie: Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi and I gotta say... I hated it, I hated Episode 6: The Force Awakens and I legitimately don’t understand how Disney can just not follow through with plot lines in their Star Wars Trilogy but yet have The Mandalorian at the same time. I am an original trilogy and prequel type of gal if anyone cares to know.
Currently reading: My old fanfics in my Saska series because Tiff doesn’t remember if she brought something up already or not. lmao
Currently watching: Hellsing Ultimate... yes I know... again. It’s just so good
Currently craving: Ramen. Like legit ramen. I’ve made my own recently with noodles, veggies, meats and like... man I just want legit ramen. I’ll probably make my own tonight for dinner
Tagging: @awkward-turtles-world @gharashambles @herbalina-of-yesteryear @thedevilishlyangelic @briarfox13 @krystal280791 if y’all would care to partake :)

1-35 !!!
o.O Well you aren’t kidding around...! But thanks, that gives me something to do at least ahdhd
1. From one to five stars, how would you rate your writing? (No downplaying yourself!)
3, maybe?
I’ve seen improvement from my fanfic-beginnings for sure, but there’s still a lot of things I can improve on I believe.
2. Why do you write fanfiction?
I’ve held a fascination with writing ever since primary school. We were given a couple creative writing tasks back then and I actually got a lot of praise for my stuff ;v; So writing an actual book someday as actually always been a dream of mine.
I did not really write much fanfic before entering the Shokugeki-fandom, being real. But I suppose I got into it for multiple reasons: manifesting my ships (MarYu is a lot more common these days, but it was nowhere when I first entered the fandom, lol. And I don’t think I have to tell you about how much content for EtsuNe there was before I began making it), giving the OCs I came up with a story, playing around with AU ideas & later on: giving the character I’ve come to love so much more love and justice than the canon gave them.
It’s a lot of fun being real! I’m glad I started it. And it’s honestly cool to see the improvements I made from the first “Shokugeki no Kimiko” chapter to the most recent one ;v; !
3. What do you think makes your writing stand out from other works?
eeeeeehhhh, oh dear...
I really don’t know...possibly a little sense of naivety maybe? I’m-
4. Are there any writers that inspire you?
Within the Shokugeki-fandom @wishingforatypewriter & @hanzome-hasashi.
I really love wishingforatypewriter’s exploration of the characters, Totsuki, the families and so on and so on. I still remember the days when I would read updates of “The Third Year” in the school-corridor, waiting for my first lesson to start! Good memories!
With hanzome-hasashi, I really love the atmosphere in her story and I hold both “Late Night Lullabies” & “Akai Ito” very dear. LNL is so fluffy and romantic and !!! ahh, it’s all the things I love. Meanwhile Akai Ito, is just....so enchanting and captivating...In different manner than LNL, but still so, so, so good!
5. What’s the fic you’re most proud of?
It’s not finished yet...It’s not even close to being finished yet, but...”Shokugeki no Kimiko” ;v;
It will actually have it’s 5-year anniversary this year and that’s such an incredible number to me! I’ve never been able to commit to a story this long before and it just feels good, because I am really excited for so many things that are yet to come!
I really like the characters I came up with and I’m very happy to see they’ve been well-received by others as well. I tinkered on it so long and I think there’s some stuff I did very well on, to be perfectly honest.
This story is also what gave me some confidence that I might someday truly be able to fulfill my dream and write a book. It has overall received a lot of compliments and such a good response, that I’m stunned.
-
For finished works, I’d have to say “Waiting for the rain to stop”.
6. What element of writing do you find comes easily?
I think I have a good pacing! (And I’ve been told so as well)
7. What element of writing do you struggle with most?
Detailed descriptions.
8. Which character(s) do you find easiest to write?
For Shokugeki, I think I’d have to say Nene Kinokuni.
9 & 10, I answered already
11. Who or what do you find yourself writing about most?
My OCs & my romantic fantasies, I’d say adhfhg
Though, lately...I do have a coping fic going on, that I started in late 2019, I believe and that I occasionally work on when I’m not feeling too well...It’s a story about change, as I am one of those kind off people who have a hard time dealing with changes.
12. Tell us about a WIP you’re excited about.
For one, I really like the beginning of the previously mentioned Coping-Fic. I’d show it, but ahdhd it’s in German. Because I write this thing in German...
Another couple things I’m excited for it so finally add onto the Shokugeki Next Gen One Shot collection! A lot of people have been asking me about Shigeo’s and Chieko’s first meeting and yes, I’ll try to work on it as soon as I can!
13. First fandom you ever wrote for?
Attack on Titan, I wrote one or two things in German...I believe.
14. What’s your favorite fandom to write for?
Lol
15. What’s the weirdest fandom you’ve ever written for?
Also Shokugeki maybe? Because it’s so small ahdhd?
16, I’ve answered already
17. A trope you’ll never, ever write for.
I can’t see myself writing a fic with an unhappy ending...But I mean? Maybe I’ll surprise myself.
Besides that, I don’t think I’ll ever tackle truly harsh, dark topics either. I don’t feel occupied for that.
18. Wildest fic you’ve ever written?
Most stuff I wrote when I first entered the fandom ahdhd
The most weirdest thing was an AU that’s basically a role reversal of Rebels vs. Central but it is also in space, in a Star Wars inspired AU ashdod
I really don’t know ahsdhd
19, I answered already
20. Gen fic or shippy stuff?
Shippy stuff.
100%
21. Favorite pairing to write for? (platonic or romantic!)
Romance-wise, my faves would be EtsuNe, MarYu (no one is surprised) & AkiSako.
For my OCs it’s ShigeChi (no one is surprised, Pt.2)...aka. Shigeo Eizan & Chieko Marui.
My favorite platonic relationship to write for would be Shun and Zenji I think, in terms of my OCs it’s definitely Suzume Hojo and Shigeo. Because they greatly amuse me and ngl, their basic dynamic is a little akin to the dynamic between me and my best friend.
22. Do you listen to anything while you write?
I do! I have an extra playlist for when I write anything SnKimiko-related & it’s full of a variety of genres, haha.
At times I also listen to Jazz or Lofi when writing though.
But yeah ultimately music really inspires me. There have been songs that painted entire scenarios in my head & song lyrics might end up being chapter titles in SnKimiko at some points ahdhd (watch out)
23. Do you prefer prompts and challenges, or completely independent ideas?
Independent ideas, I tend to struggle with prompts...but they can be fun at times!
24. One-shots or multi-chaptered works?
I like both hdd
But for a slow turtle like me, multi-chaptered works can be a struggle...! If I was a little bit faster, I could have brought down so many ideas already.
25. Have you ever daydreamed about side adventures/spin-offs from your fic? Tell us about them!
Well, I already do have a spin-off & a One Shot collection with side adventures for SnKimiko!
But well...The Coping-Fanfic would also play in SnKimiko-Verse.
26. Is there anything you’ve wanted to write, but you’ve been too scared to try?
A prequel fic to SnKimiko that showcases the future parents getting together :,))) If I made the Coping-Fic a multi-chapter thing...that could be it...
but ah, I’m still so unsure about it. I feel I’m just too inexperienced and naive to tell a compelling story in that regard given that I have no actual romantic relationship experience, haha.
27. What’s the nicest comment you’ve ever received?
So many, hnnn
A very recent review highlighted how they’re enjoying the conflict of Hiraku & Kimiko and how they think it’s fascinating how both of them differ from Soma and each other as well....And ah, that just kind off made me super happy to read :,)))
I also received a couple reviews of people who said they usually don’t read Oc-centric fanfic but they liked mine and that also got me all :,)))))))))
28. How well do you handle criticism when it comes to your writing?
When it’s not given to be in disrespectful manner, I’m willing to hear it out.
29. Have you ever gone outside of your comfort zone for a fic? How did it turn out?
Yeah, I wrote an Unrequited Love One Shot once.
It wrecked my heart in half and I cried for the rest of the evening.
Okay, but beside that...”Spoonful of Affection” and some other One Shots, I probably haven’t even shared on here, has some stuff where I tried out “new things” ig.
30. Tooth-rotting fluff or merciless angst?
sahdhfJGJGG
God, tooth-rotting fluff...please! I want to indulge into sappy, romantic scenarios all the time.
Angst wrecks me ahdh. I don’t write Angst to wreck others, I write it to wreck myself. The one time I wrote something very heavily angsty, it ended in me crying on my bed while listening to Toni Braxton’s “Un-Break my heart” on loop.
31. Do you have any OCs? Tell us about them!
✨ I have too many ✨
But they have their own blog ✨😌: @shokugekinokimiko
32. Summarize a random fic of yours in 10 words or less.
“Shokugeki no Hiraku” - Chaos, Parties, Social Clash, Mean Girls, Underdog, School Tournament, Yearning
33. Is there anything you wish your audience knew about your writing or writing process?
I write mainly on my mobile.
34. Copy and paste an excerpt you’re particularly fond of.
“Schlagartig änderte sich Hisako’s Leben als sie die Sonne ihres Lebens das erste Mal traf.
Schlagartig änderte sich Hisako’s Leben als die Sonne dann plötzlich verschwand und Hisako’s Universum, stets ausgerichtet auf das strahlende Licht namens Erina seit jenem schicksalhaften Tag, kollabierte.” I’m sorry, but it’s really the best I can offer rn ahdhd
35. Ramble about any fic-related thing you want!
I literally love fanfiction so much and we have quite some talent in this smol fandom, no one can convince me otherwise.
I’ve run out of words, I’m sorry.
But you...you reading this!!!
You’re amazing 💕✨

Director Morty, what are your thoughts on the modern theater and film industry?
“What’s the politest way to say it sucks? Compare the new Star Wars to the original Star Wars, or even the prequel trilogy. Compare the new Jurassic World to the old Jurassic Park. Compare the new Karate Kid to the old Karate Kid. Compare the new Ninja Turtles to the old Ninja Turtles. Compare every single soulless remake of a beloved Classic Disney movie to the original… none of them have even come close to the impact the first ones had. Every reboot and remake serves no purpose, they either try to be like the old ones and fail, or go the exact opposite direction and fail even harder.
Watch my latest movie, Gorgonzola. It’s not a remake of Godzilla, it’s a brand new property! Godzilla doesn’t have horns, and he has completely different proportions. Plus he was killed by an ‘Oxygen Destroyer’ but the monster in my movie, well you’ll just have to see it. It stars Luigi and it’s better than 10 Super Bowls! I don’t want to oversell it, judge for yourselves.
Also, no one does practical effects anymore, did you ever notice that? Is it that hard to build a scale city block?”

Tommy Hilfiger x Zendaya Inspired Outfits: Lookbook no.6
Hi to anyone reading,
This post is part a Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman appreaciation post (yes, we getting back into that 2013 stan twitter lingo of always unnecessarily stating full names) and part me trying my hand at her interpretation of probably my all time favourite decade for fashion inspiration, the 70s.
As much as I’m in love with her portrayal of Rue Bennett on Euphoria and her and Labrinth’s All for Love and could also probably write a whole post about that alone *deep breath*, I’m here to talk about what originally drew me to Zendaya (aside from her Oscar-worthy performance as Rocky Blue on Shake it Up where she had to act like she and Bella Thorne liked each other) : HER STYLE. Her looks a collaborative effort between her and stylist, Law Roach, I have never once seen any photo of Zendaya where she’s anything less than exquisitely put together, thus it should’ve come as no surprise when she teamed up with Tommy Hilfiger to put on one of the coolest shows of Paris Fashion Week in February this year.
-ZENDAYA’S BEST STREET STYLE/RED CARPET MOMENTS-
Whilst the collaborations with Tommy Hilfiger haven’t necessarily been the most visually groundbreaking or daring, for me personally they really hit the sweet spot between the bohemian aesthetic and a rock and roll edge, especially in the latest collection. For a celebrity collaboration, the line feels unusually authentic and the clear direction and overall cohesiveness showcases Zendaya’s ability to convey a distinctive mood. Also, it’s WEARABLE. So many of the outfits you see go down the runway only appear to cater to that tall, washed out, willowy type, who are gorgeous too, don’t get me wrong, but...well, they’ve had their time, haven’t they? These are the kinds of clothes everyone can feel beautiful in and that’s so, so important.
-ZENDAYA WEARING THE COLLECTION-
The first collection, debuting in February of this year at Paris Fashion Week, went the disco route and was the best thing Tommy Hilfiger has done in a while. Everything from the set to the models to the music was so fucking FUN and you could tell how much love and passion went into planning the show. I had so many favourite looks:
And I honestly think I might have liked the recent collection even more. With a slightly biker chic element to it, the leather look pieces and the jewell tones, I think this one has a grungier feel to it that the previous collection lacked, in terms of catering to my personal preference, that is; yes, catering to me, random girl on the internet they’ve never met before was definitely Zendaya and Tommy’s intention. Why wouldn’t it be?
Again, it’s not something that’s never been done before but the collection is fresh in a different way, almost like the individual makes the clothes what they are and not vice versa. I doubt any fashion show is so laxly organised as to let the models style themselves backstage but that’s the feeling you get when you’re watching the runway.
Like I said, this collection is definitely slightly darker and grungier than the first but in a way that it gives me Stevie Nicks joins a biker gang but then decides to leave that behind to become the editor of a fashion magazine vibes (that was a TRIP) and what’s not to like about that? I want all of it, from the waistcoats, to the wide brim hats, to the houndstooth, to the snake print, to the shearling.
There’s just one problem in that at the time of first seeing the collection I was still in the middle of a self-enforced shopping dry spell, and also, more pressingly, broke af. To be fair, Tommy Hilfiger is one of the more affordable designer brands but still not affordable enough that I can afford to spend over £100 on a bodysuit, ya feel? So instead, I looked through what I already had and used the runway looks from the collection to try and put my own spin on things, incorporating the key shapes, colours, patterns and accessories that make the line, imo, so distinctive.
-KEY FEATURES OF THE TOMMY X ZENDAYA LINES-
1. Flares: If you really want your outfit to give off a 70s vibe, flares are probably the easiest way to do it. Even if you’re not feeling particularly adventurous with prints, plain ones are still super flattering, imo!
2. Wide Brim Hats: Not exactly a hard one for me to incorporate as they're probably my favourite way to tie together an outfit anyway, but the ultra wide brim, witchy-looking ones seen in the second collection are perfect for autumn and winter AND cost-efficient because they can double as part of a low-effort slutty witch Halloween costume. We love a multi-purpose accessory.
3. Psychedelic Prints: More of a staple of the first collaboration but bold, trippy prints are so easy to make into a look. It’s definitely easier to incorporate these kind of prints into your wardrobe in the summer (there’s nothing cuter than a wacky two piece with some subtle jewellery), but if you go for a piece with a richer, deeper colour palette you’ve got yourself a fab Christmas party outfit.
4. Turtlenecks: Showing why the turtleneck has so much style potential, Zendaya’s collections were a masterclass in how to layer. I can’t believe there was a time in my life when I thought turtle necks were the ugliest thing ever. I am ashamed. Though I blame this cursed face-swap image of Monica and Chandler from friends for putting me off:
I also found this haunting image in the process of searching for the one above:
Is this what they mean when they talk about the dark web? Truly scarring.
5. Snake Print: Not gonna lie, the animal print thing has kinda been done to death and I wasn’t super excited about seeing it on the runway but when it’s reworked through a more maximalist lens (ie. the matching snake print coat and trousers) it still works for me. I think they key in keeping it fresh is more luxurious, textured animal print paired with clothing you wouldn’t necessarily expect to see it with. Basically, animal print mini dress? Boring. Animal print flares? I’m down.
6. Faux Leather: I say faux leather even though unfortunately it’s usually real leather that gets used on the runway (because nothing shows luxury like wearing a dead animal’s skin purely for vanity, right?), but regardless, some of my favourite pieces in both collections were the leather-look coats and blazers. The waistcoat-trouser combination in particular (far left on the bottom row) was probably my favourite look of both collections and though I relentlessly scoured my dad’s wardrobe to see if there was something I could work with to imitate the waistcoat, I came away empty handed:( sad times:(
7. Jewell Tones: The deep maroons of the second Zendaya x Tommy collaboration and the cobalt, emerald green and amethyst splashes in the dresses at the end of the first are, again, perfect Christmas party colours. I know, I know, I keep going on about Christmas parties but any excuse to drink, lol.
8. Scarfs: Skinny scarves with a load of gold jewellery are my favourite things at the moment. But we can’t forget the original style icon who did it first:
I love Emma Roberts and Wild Child is a great movie with a load of amazing style inspo, fuck you Rotten Tomatoes.
9. Heeled Boots: Kind of a basic winter staple anyway but it seems the more cowboy-y, the better. We’re talking about those leather look, mid-calf length boots that seem to be everywhere at the moment. Personally, I’m not quite sure if my legs are anywhere long enough to pull them off, but I do think they’re really cute, and very yeehaw.
10. Bonus features that I forgot to include in my outfits: High Waisted Things! Waistcoats! Pussy-bow shirts! Spots! Velvet! Suits!
-PSA: Don’t ask me about the peace sign. I was trying to do a 70s thing. I failed. Let me flop at my attempts to be cute in peace.-
So, that’s it! Thank you to anybody that read this far! And if you enjoyed this post and you haven’t done already: GO AND WATCH EUPHORIA. It is honestly the best new show I’ve watched in ages and almost makes up for the overwhelming TV-related disappointment of season 8 of Game of Thrones. I mean, not really. I’m still mildly furious. But then again, D&D got cut from their Star Wars deal AND the Stark prequel was cancelled in favour of a Targaryen one so it seems the balance of nature is finally being restored. Clink clink bitch (es).

an attempt at my final thoughts on the star wars prequels, for now at least:
while i overall loved them, easily the worst aspect of the whole deal were the blatantly racist aliens. explain to me why jar-jar and the gungans had to talk like a poor imitation of a jamaican and why the greedy alien bugmen had vaguely asian accents. fucked up, man
all that being said, jar jar wasn't that bad from an annoyingness perspective. i think i remember laughing at him getting hurt at one point, even. the prequels definitely would've been better without him, but i feel like if you literally just changed his voice to something more normal and tweaked his dialogue to be a bit less juvenile we could've had someone actually enjoyable to see on screen. i'm a darth jar-jar truther btw, it would've been really funny if he just randomly started talking like a normal person and pulled out a red lightsaber
i loved the performances of the women especially! shmi and padme especially, you can definitely tell they both gave it their all into their performances. i think from a writing perspective shmi could've been written with a bit more complexity than "anakin's mom", but by god did her actress really sell that whole world weary downtrodden vibe convincingly. padme was also lovely throughout the whole thing, i definitely feel like she carried the brunt of making her and anakin's relationship feel legit (even if anakin's actor also did a stellar job). maybe it's just that i'm biased in favor of women but GOD did they do a good job
anakin and obi-wan both did a stellar job, i especially loved their banter at times. might've been a tad quippy for some people's tastes but it was nowhere near like, marvel movie snark, y'know? anakin was definitely the most awkward part of these movies, but to me that adds to the charm. and that segues into my next point nicely, i think
now, maybe i'm reading way too deeply into this and i'm insane for this, but am i crazy for thinking the dialogue in these movies is reminiscent of how autistic people communicate? like, that might be why most people hate it, because most people are neurotypicals, and that's why it felt so natural to me personally. i 100% doubt it was intentional, but damn dude i gotta wonder
one last thing, i absolutely loved the politics in these movies. i know that's one of the more divisive things, but i feel like it's what really makes it all work for me! palpatine playing 4d chess and manipulating both the republic and the separatists into a position in which he'll ultimately get complete control!!! him subtly manipulating anakin throughout the whole thing, if you have your eye open for it it's fucking everywhere!!! how it shows a steady decline from a liberal democracy to a dictatorship so damn smooth that it feels like a natural progression!!! how fascists turn love for those around you into hate towards your enemies, god dude!!! a big part of this is just palpatine's actor being amazing but the prequels really made these movies for me
one last thing is the jedi. i love how fucking flawed they are!!! the arrogance, the blindness, the ultimately good natured intentions being clouded by their fucking code, god dude the jedi are so good in this!!! i loved how poorly they handled anakin, him constantly struggling with his emotions and instead of teaching him how to constructively deal with them they just tell him to ignore them entirely. it really makes his fall feel... inevitable. it all makes sense, to me. i once heard somebody say that the greatest tragedies are outwardly preventable but inwardly inevitable, because in order to prevent them the characters would have to be fundamentally different people. that's the jedi, to me, that's anakin too. had the jedi code had been different, maybe it would've been different. who's to say

Thought I'd chime in with a few of my favourite practical effects in film.
The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man in Ghostbusters. A guy in a suit stomping around a miniature set.
Daffy Duck and Donald Duck's piano duel in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. This whole movie is a special effects masterwork, but notice in this scene how the piano keys are depressing, the stools are rocking and the ducks' reflections which were all made by hand.
Jabba the Hutt in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. The biggest puppet ever built for a movie at the time, controlled from the inside by three people - one guy operated the right arm, another guy operated the left arm and tongue, and a third guy operated the tail. Plus the eyes were radio-controlled.
Pretty much every creature in Jabba's palace was either a person in a suit or a puppet, with the only exception being the godawful CGI added for the Special Edition.
The Muppets riding bicycles, like this scene from The Muppets Take Manhattan.
Skynet's forces in the opening of Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Fully functional animatronics, every one of them.
Unfortunately this was the best GIF I could find. Just go watch the scene for yourself, it's incredible.
The awesome makeup from the Planet of the Apes movies.
The titular heroes of the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie and its sequel, Secret of the Ooze. Animatronic suits courtesy of Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
We don't talk about the third movie.
Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors. A giant puppet from Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
Pretty much all of the alien effects in John Carpenter's The Thing.
The transformation scene in An American Werewolf in London, the very first movie to win the Oscar for Best Makeup!
Pretty much everything in the Dark Crystal and its prequel series Age of Resistance, with every character either being a puppet or at least one puppeteer in a suit.
In conclusion your honour, practical effects are goddamn incredible.
Marvel movies have completely eliminated the concept of practical effects from the movie-watching public’s consciousness

One thing I like to think about is how kids that are growing up watching Dragon Ball Super are going to look back on the rest of the franchise and Dragon Ball stories made going forward, and how their experience watching Super is going to inform a lot of their views and opinions on the series.
Really think about it though, there’s going to be an entire generation of Dragon Ball fans for whom Beerus and Whis have seemingly always been mainstays for the series, and it’ll probably feel like Dragon Ball just wouldn’t be the same without them.
There are kids that are going to grow up with Caulifla or Hit or Toppo as some of their favourite characters. Kids for whom Goku Black and Zamasu feel like just as iconic villains for the franchise as the likes of Cell and Majin Buu. Future Mai being Future Trunks’ love interest is just going to feel like the way things are meant to be, same for the Pilaf Gang being kids in fact.
I’m eager to see what this generation of fans are going to have to say about Super when they’re older, and the previous series when they inevitably get around to them (Not that all of them will. There are still plenty of casuals out there that have only watched DBZ and not Dragon Ball), and whether they’ll like them as much as Super or they won’t appeal to them as much simply because Super is what they grew up on and it’s what Dragon Ball really is to them.
I’m a person that grew up on the Star Wars Prequels, and it’s Star Wars content from that era that I’m most interested in. Episode III is my favourite movie, I love the Clone Wars tv series (Mostly the CGI one though), and Star Wars just doesn’t feel like Star Wars to me without lots of Jedi running around, probably one of the biggest gripes I had with the Force Awakens when that came out being that after the end of the original trilogy where it looked like Luke was going to rebuild the Jedi Order, we suddenly went right back to the premise of “One force wielding hero and old guy on the heroes side, two dark sith users running the big evil empire” Because that just felt stale and limiting to me.
I prefer Anakin to Luke, Ewan Mcgregor IS Obi-Wan Kenobi to me. I prefer the Battle Droids to the Stormtroopers as the standard fodder enemies.
Heck, if I’m being honest I also don’t care much for the Original Trilogy. I watched it several years after Revenge of the Sith came out when I got the movies on DVD and, yeah, they were fine, but they’d aged poorly in places and the stories and characters just didn’t interest me as much. I’d still prefer to re-watch The Phantom Menace over any of them, though I do enjoy all the original trilogy movies and appreciate them for what they are and their place in cinematic history.
But they’re still not really Star Wars to me.
For all the flak the Prequels got, and still get from some people, they were an important part of many people’s childhood’s in the same way the original trilogy was to older Star Wars fans, and as time has gone on more and more of us have come out of the woodworks to declare our support for the Prequels and make arguments in their favour, and even many people who hated the movies at first have either grown to appreciate them over time, or at least admit that they weren’t all that bad like they once made them out to be. At the very least, most of the “THESE MOVIES MURDERED MY CHILDHOOD!!! WAAAAAHHH!!” Nonsense has died down.
We’ll undoubtedly see a whole generation of Star Wars fans for whom Rey and Finn and Poe are more iconic heroes to them than Luke, Han and Leia are.
I think a similar thing is likely to happen with Dragon Ball Super going forward. It’s a very divisive series now, and it’ll continue to be so for years to come, but I think down the line we’ll see a lot more fans coming out saying how they grew up with the series and how much it means to them, and fans that are critical now being at least a bit more forgiving in retrospect.
Super is inevitably going to have a dramatic effect on Dragon Ball media going forward. FighterZ has already been made to take place at some point during Super, and we’ve seen it’s characters appear in various side media, like Fusions, Heroes and the big twist of the Reborn as Yamcha manga being that Beerus and Champa were behind everything as some sort of game. The upcoming movie will be a follow up to the current saga of Super, and it’s pretty much inevitable that there’s going to be a sequel series to Super down the line.
Like it or not, and it’s fine if you don’t I understand where you’re coming from and I can relate to some of the complaints, Super is going to be an influential part of the franchise that informs a lot of things going forward much like the Prequels did for Star Wars. There’s going to be more Dragon Ball series and other media made long after it, and it’s going to be a big part of many fans formative experience with Dragon ball as a whole.
I’m sure there are going to be some high and mighty fans resenting and lamenting that, going all “Oh those poor children, having to settle for trash instead of getting the quality experiences that we were blessed with. Oh, what a shame!” but as someone who had to see a lot of people put down or outright bullied and ostracized for liking the Prequels growing up (Not to mention harassing the actors, you ever heard what happened to the poor kid who played Anakin in Phantom Menace?), I just want to say... respect them. Disagree with them if you feel differently, that’s fine, but don’t try to dismiss or diminish their experiences and what it means to them.
Call Super bad all you want, but you can’t say it doesn’t matter.
In a way, all of this is one reason why I’m glad Super exists, even with all the ups and downs. Between it and Kai, a lot of people who otherwise might not have gotten into Dragon Ball have gotten to become fans of the franchise, they’ve been a gateway for many people, especially kids. Not to mention a way for older fans with children of their own now to connect with each other.
Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, and the manga they were adapted from, are classic works of fiction, and the single most important landmark for Shonen anime and manga. They defined anime for many people, and they earned their place in history. And we should always appreciate them and try to share the experience of those stories with more people, I know I do.
But lets be honest, if the franchise had ended with them, how many then modern anime fans would pay them any mind come 2050 and beyond? I mean... the original Star Trek series is a classic and important work of science fiction that’s beloved by millions throughout the world... ... but would HALF as many people today be Star Trek fans if it wasn’t for Star Trek The Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space 9 or the Abrams films? Heck, I’m pretty sure even Enterprise has it’s fans.
The original King Kong is a beloved classic, but a large amount of people today haven’t actually watched it, and mainly know it through Pop Culture osmosis. But many of those same people HAVE watched the 2005 remake and Kong: Skull Island, and have those as some of their favourite movies. Same goes for Godzilla, would the character be nearly as beloved or as ingrained in pop culture if not for the many sequels and remakes made for his franchise.
How many people today have seen the 60′s Spider-man cartoon or read the early comics, but did watch Spider-Man The Animated series from the 90′s or any of the various Spider-man movie series or Spectacular and even Ultimate Spider-man and became fans through those? Not a lot of kids today have watched the original Transformers or Ninja Turtles or My Little Pony cartoons or movies, but a lot of them (Many of which might even be in their teens now) sure have watched Transformers Prime, the Nickelodeon TMNT and Friendship is Magic.
For all the problems and missteps it has, one thing I do appreciate about DBS is that’s it and various media surrounding it like the Xenoverse Games and FighterZ, are helping to keep Dragon Ball alive for many people, not just old fans who grew up with the franchise but new people as well.
I’ll always love Dragon Ball Z and the original Dragon Ball to death, and I’ll be sharing them with my kids if I ever have any. But while I do see the missteps that have been made and hope things can be improved in various areas for Dragon Ball series going forward, and while it’s tempting to say we should just leave a masterpiece alone, I’m grateful Super exists and I hope many more new Dragon Ball series will be made down the line for generations of children to enjoy for many, many years to come.
Wow, this got longwinded and preachy. Didn’t mean for it to be this long, this whole post just sort of... happened. I dunno, I just wanted to get these thoughts out of my head and stuff just kept coming. Ignore me if I sound like a babbling idiot XD

🔥 Star Wars
The prequels are funny, and I love Obi wan and Padme, but I haven’trewatched any of them in years because I just… don’t really see them as rewatchable unless its for a marathon or something, theyre just not very gooD
I only watched individual eps of the clone wars and probably wont fill the gaps for a while. It didnt really catch my interest when I was still in the intended age group (I really disliked anakin when I was younger) and the bitter clone wars fans who comment “bring tcw back!!” On Every Single Rebels thing have completely turned me off from it for now. God knows ill definitely watch it sometime (for my lovesAhsoka and Rex & because Im not THAT much of a bitter bitch) and Ill probably enjoy it but god is it frustrating to not be able to enjoy a show without constantly being confronted with bitter fans stuck in the past...
Yoda is awful, I say that partly as a joke but partly because I REALLY DO find him frustrating. It says a lot that my first reaction to his cameo in The Last Jedi was “What the fuck is that turtle bitch doing here.”
This is a polarising opinion no matter what you think about it so it counts: I dont like Rey n Kylo together. I feel like it would go against Rey’s personality and values to immediately date the person who betrayed her, killed two people she highly looked up to and attempted to do the same with multiple others, I think Kylo should get some HELP before he starts DATING, the “you.. are the only thing that can bring him back to the light..” trope is boring & there’s very little actual.. like.. romantic chemistry between the two... Im not as opinionated on it as EVERYBODY SEEMS TO BE though, where is all thiS ANGER COMING FROM
#anon#anonymous#answers#admitting that i havent fully watched tcw is kinda hard considering how much i love rebels but#I think its very ME to only watch episodes where rex & ahsoka are cool#LOVE THOSE KIDS <3#send me a flame for an unpopular opinion!
