On turning 26

Today was lazy. I woke up at almost 10 am, had sandwich and dimsum as breakfast, and showered. My room is a lot cleaner because I spent half of yesterday decluttering - finally emptied out three plastic containers and packed one large and one cabin bags full of old clothes to be given away. And filled up two big trash bags with old name cards, graduation sashes, broken pens and other piles of stuff that have mounted from the beginning of undergraduate years. Also food packagings that were previously organized like a storefront but I need to make room for my books and dolls. 

Received food deliveries ordered by Mama and also from Etem and Fadel - so now there are a pan of lasagna, mini tumpengs, one litre of coffee, a Pizza Hut big box, and cheese cake. I have also sent out the goods ordered by people - one by Gojek and the rest through JNE even for the ones addressed in Bandung. It is 31k vs 8k per delivery so the decision was a no-brainer. A friend picked up his folder full of diploma and other important stuff, chatted about plans in applying for jobs and also about sending cargo from the Netherlands to here - in which I became more worried about my four boxes. I hope they arrive.

Replied to kind messages on WhatsApp and social media and super thankful that people do remember me. I am happy to have lived another year with new knowledge, friends, and beautiful moments.

Mama called a regular handyman because I need to alter my working table to be a lot higher - ended up following Brotherwood for future furniture reference. Also googled for other relevant furnitures to create a nice workspace in my room. Thanks to Silmi for the office chair recommendation - gonna order one from Officeplace’s official store on Tokopedia for a lot cheaper. Still haven’t bought an Indonesian sim card so I cannot login to e-commerces and I am still Gojek-less. Have been bothering my sister several time to order Gojek and check for the tariffs. 

Joined the new (old) office coordination meeting with lots of familiar names and also several new ones. I am now back working for my old office, in a new function. Will probably have the first meeting with new boss and colleague (singular) on Monday. From 2016 to mid-2018, I worked in the Business Incubation division and now I will start to work in the Innovation Park division. To be honest, I am curious about things that have happened in the past two years, and now that the innovation park structure will be completed in November, I am more curious to what can happen!

I have never really have an ambition to work in big name companies, multinational companies, consulting firms, or startups. This job definitely does not pay that much especially when compared to the 3,300 minimum monthly wage of expats on kennismigrant visa in the Netherlands. But that is no problem because money is never and hopefully will never become my first priority in life. There is so much to be done in this short, short life and I want to do things that matter, and to create the change and progress that is needed and longed for by the society.

The meeting was too long, but one of the most important new information I acquired today was the fact that my boss now have a long beard. Which was surprising as the last time I saw him was around March this year and the beard was definitely not this prominent. Cannot wait to physically meet with other old work friends and catch up. 

Like previous years, I am writing a Tumblr post to commemorate my birthday. Did not really physically meet anybody other than family (sans my brother as he’s never home for long), a LOT of Gojek drivers, bapak-bapak JNE, a high school friend, and Pak Abas the handyman.

Nevertheless, it was a good day.

Tumpeng time

With its signature yellow rice cone in the middle and various Indonesian vegetable and meat dishes surrounding it, Tumpeng is a classic for communal gatherings and feasts, most commonly in Java, Bali, and Madura! A traditional Javanese tumpeng’s side dishes would have a set, balanced list of dishes, but nowadays, a host can put anything they’d like. They are also eaten on other celebrations in the modern day, such as birthdays. Kinda like an Indonesian birthday cake.

Traditionally, the tumpeng is a symbol of gratitude. The top of the tumpeng would be cut off and given to the most important person in the slametan/syukuran ceremony. They may be the leader, the oldest person, or the most beloved one. Then, everyone else enjoys the tumpeng together.

The signature cone, “mountain” shape refers to old Hindu traditions where mountains were regarded as sacred and how the Hindu people honoured their Gods. When Islam is introduced to Indonesia, they adopted the tumpeng tradition as well in the context of their own faith, to honor their God who has authority over all of nature.

Some people say that the origin of the name “tumpeng” is an acronym derived from a Javanese phrase: ”yen metu kudu sing mempeng” which means something like “when you do something, give it your all.” or Wonderful Indonesia’s more elegant translation: “Make it count when you step out.”
