1. the entire 2018 caps playoff run, culminating in the most romantic moment in history. I had to defend my dissertation during the CBJ series and was in a fugue state of exhaustion that entire spring, so watching each successive game was like something out of someone else's life. it was incomprehensible. dc teams don't win things. they certainly don't beat the penguins in the playoffs, and if they do, they don't KEEP ON WINNING.

there's this person in my class who's also an f1 fan and I thought that we could be friends or at least talk about it and stuff but similar to the other anons friend they actually think like they're theeee expert on anything and everything f1, which would be fine if the shit they said wasn't straight up wrong

I’m enjoying the chat that the PWHL is getting, and that NWSL has gotten, but at the same time I can’t help but compare it to the way the W is discussed, and why the difference? Is it because the WNBA has been around for longer and more continuously, so hasn’t had the reset that the other women’s leagues have had? Is it because soccer and hockey in other forms aren’t as popular as basketball? Is it because the players are predominantly black and masc and gay? Is it because it’s not wholly independent of the male pro league counterpart? Is my perception clouded because people online have irrational hatred of the W? Is it all of the above? It seriously would make for an interesting thesis or something. I’m happy that other women’s sports are having success but seeing the wnba be constantly shat upon is always going to be disheartening because I love watching it, not for any altruistic reason but because the play is intense and gritty. But trying to tell people about it falls on deaf ears

NWSL and PWHL have some kind of viral internet power that the WNBA doesn't have. I've been trying to figure out why for a very long time.

A lot of soccer fans told me it was the 2019 world cup that made NWSL viral. Megan Rapinoe was America's hero against the Trump supervillain.

Okay. Haven't WNBA players done a dozen things like that? Don't people remember the 2020 bubble season when the WNBA helped Democrats win power over the Senate? Don't people remember the name Brittney Griner? Where's our viral internet following? Why is there still 200 NWSL blogs for every 1 WNBA blog?

Trolls say the same things about our female basketball stars as they say about Megan Rapinoe. But this only seemed to strengthen Rapinoe's internet fanbase. It made her a hero. But when our basketball players get the same treatment from trolls, there's no corresponding army of fans.

I can understand why male trolls hate women's basketball. But I don't understand why women are indifferent about the WNBA.

The viral power of female obsessive internet fanbases is what holds up half the global entertainment industry. TV shows. The Swiftie phenomenon. NWSL. Even crusty twitch streamers and youtubers get love from tumblrinas. There are huge tumblr fandoms for that stuff. I think it's a big deal for any entertainment product to get that female obsessive internet fanbase power. And that buzz just doesn't exist for the WNBA. The internet fandom girls are apathetic about the WNBA.

Why? What feeds these fandoms? What is the WNBA missing? Is it really just too black and gay? Drag Race is black and gay and everyone loves it. Then people peek through the windows of the WNBA world but they don't come inside.

It's hilarious when a European Youtuber gets flabbergasted at iShowSpeed. I follow a lot of sports. I never watched his streams before but as another American fan of the beautiful game, I want to place my two cents. Speed puts in the work and his efforts show. He's not here or to promote a club like it's a brand for money and fame, Speed is there for the love of it and for a laugh. I've heard of so many sports hating actors only go to "sportsball" games for PR purposes; or politicians pretending to be a football fan just because he is from a "football loving country" and he has to for votes. Any "hater" or "poseur" can try to "study" the phenomenon and every little fact about the false 9 with cold precision.

Yes Speed is a complete LOLcow with a problematic past; but I've seen Tumblrinas get away with bigotry and prejudice just because the target isn't a persecuted minority. Players and clubs can easily tell the difference between poseurs and new fans. No amount of cameras cutting to cameos of famous people will save that, the west wants authenticity and value.

I've met Europeans in football kits who don't know anything about the sport but still think just because they're not an American they have clout in the sports world.

talking about old fandoms i used to like, there was once this romance vn i played and i fell hard for the problematic white boy who found his healthy outlet in the generic medieval fantasy equivalent of pro wrestling. i should have known then and there that i should jump into the real thing. its filled with problematic white boys who finds his outlet in fake fights.

IN RETROSPECT THO, the whole scene is written from someone not actually into wrestling. because girl, judging by context clues, kayfabe is still not broken in that fantasy setting. they made it all sound like a gay old time but historically, before kayfabe was broken, someone who is uninitiated will be treated with actual rough housing. people who sandbags and works stiff didnt get their rival approaching them in good fun saying "dont hit too hard bro, its all fake and fun". no they got jumped, they got people hitting them in the legs with a baseball bat and pee streams in the face.

yeah the scene about the whiteboy LI realizing he'd be happier doing fake bar brawls than watching people knifing themselves in the coliseum screams that its written by someone who think wrestling is just sports for queer theater kids or drag for cishet men. no, its actually theater made by and for people desperate enough to risk CTE and chronic back pain by 40. the only thing that makes it a step above football is there is no stare sponsored pipeline to groom children for the sport (yet)

saying this as a mark myself, but really, its only in the last decade that wrestling starts taking head injuries and bumps seriously, and there's always dipshits who think chair shots to the head are what makes their art form authentic

but where was i saying? yeah the old romance game. this is just one example. it was a crazy time, you got this side of the fanbase projecting people they've known to the various wish-fulfillment characters in it and accusing someone of being problematic and into irl abuse or racism while there's the other side who's just there to wank and for horny fantasies. the latter is not completely harmless, i get that blindly jerking off to anything is not always good, you gotta read the story and take its meaning too and analyze it.

but man does the devs of the game shot themselves in the foot trying to appeal to both. im gonna be honest, writing one of the character to be the sole survivor of a genocide that the problematic white boy perpetrated with his family and then making BOTH be romanceable options with both corruption and redemption routes for each is. LOL. sure you can raise eyes on the ppl who like problematic white boy, thats fine, but it reflects even worse on the devs that they still try to brand themselves as queer or progressive when their writing explicitly treats war crimes as just teehee blorbo character flaw. honestly, im not pissed if they want to go that route, just dont brand themselves socially progressive and have the one monarchist say she's overthrowing the government as if its genuinely rebellious when shes literally doing so she can be the queen. say it outright that its wish fulfillment on crazy forbidden / taboo fantasies and go hard on that or just dont write problematic boytoy as the LI and actually think through the implications of treating the monarchy as a good thing if they want to commit to the socially progressive, queer friendly vibe.

also its nice to have a muslim character but i personally feel its empty rep if its just a woman wearing a hijab or a brown guy who got mentioned in a tumblr ama as a muslim. there's social, cultural, and political implications that affect your life, its not always funny food restrictions or quirky habits. and yeah, its foolish to demand that sort of depth in a romance game, but honestly i just find the whole representation thing in the game to be kind of hollow and bland. at best you get out of touch tumblrinas headcanoning that this muslim character knows how to do quranic calligraphy in their modern au where everyone is US-ian (with no elaboration when and why the brown muslim character moved to the us, which country they come from, etc etc but then that requires sincerely digging into the US involvement on SWANA and thats just not fun headcanon time and honestly even i dont expect that from people just playing with dolls, i think i'd be mad that real life happenings on the global south are just worldbuilding research for your fantasy writing. idk man i guess i just never understand the representation thing)

What I love about this argument is that we’re both correct and both incorrect.
