The National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago extends our condolences to the family and friends of the legendary Calypsonian, Gospel Singer, and former Calypso Monarch, Denyse Plummer.

Denyse Plummer broke barriers when she first emerged on the calypso scene during the 1980s, facing criticism onstage at Skinner Park as a “mixed”, female calypsonian in what has traditionally been seen as a male-dominated field. She never let this deter her however, and adamantly portrayed her love for her craft to the best of her ability, which earned her multiple crowns as Calypso Queen, and the 2001 Calypso Monarch Title with her popular song, “Nah Leaving”.

She began singing from an early age as a student at Holy Name Convent, and with their choir won several youth music competitions. Additionally, she participated in popular local talent competitions: "12 and Under", and "Scouting for Talent." As an adult, she regularly performed at the Chaconia Inn in Maraval during the 1970s-1980s.

Plummer released her first album in 1978. Her popular melodies eventually made their way to the ears of Len “Boogsie” Sharpe, who invited her to perform the Phase II Pan Groove steelband’s Panorama song, “Pan Rising” in 1986, although she had never sung calypso before. Her infamous debut at the Calypso Monarch semi-finals at Skinner Park saw jeering crowds throw projectiles at her on stage which she then incorporated into her performance, winning herself the respect of her audience and revealing why, “Woman is Boss”, as her 1988 song stated.

Following this, she was invited by calypsonian Superblue to perform at his Culture House calypso tent, and then at the late Aldwyn Roberts’, (Lord Kitchener’s) calypso tent The Revue, where she remained for 18 years. She enjoyed a successful calypso career and performed widely abroad as well, even winning Amateur Night at the Apollo Theatre in New York in 1989.

From 2015 until her passing Denyse Plummer had become a performer of Gospel music, but still incorporated the rhythm and music of calypso into her songs. In 2011, she was awarded the Trinidad & Tobago Hummingbird Medal Gold for her contributions to culture.

Waking up to the sad news of the death of one of my calypso heroes and former calypso monach Denyse Plummer

She was a true patriot, sister of the soil, kaisonian legend and raw talent who changed the course of the artform, making it something that belonged to all of us, regardless of class, creed or skin colour!

She remained loyal to her country and the artform, despite facing discrimination and hostility as some viewed the colour of her skin as having no place in the calypso arena. She was greeted with a toilet paper waving audience who threw corn husk at her in Skinner Park, yet she persisted and sailed towards stardom, to become one of most successful and well known calypsonians worldwide, taking the crown with her rendition of my favourite love song to Trinidad and Tobago - Nah Leaving.

As a young calypsonion, I myself faced hostility from some of my fellow junior artistes, who did not shy away from telling me that kaiso isn't for "white people", referring to the fact I was a few shades lighter than what they deemed to be accepted into the prestigious circle of who can represent OUR culture on the big stage. Denyse was a huge inspiration to me then and will remain so forever.

Thank you, My Queen. Thank you for everything you have done for women in calypso. Thank you for loving our culture and our country so fiercely and unapologetically. Thank you for showing us what true patriortism looks like. Thank you for your beautiful voice. Thank you for the music.

Hiiii Prism. Hey so. Wanna introduce me to Epic The Musical???? I see it on my dash all the time now but I never bothered to look up what it actually is. On purpose lol. Because at first I totally skipped over it thinking it was some Percy Jackson fanart, and then I thought it really wasn't that big of a deal, and now it seems to be a HUGE deal to so many people on Tumblr. And I enjoy the kinda not-in-that-fandom-adjacent tea-sipping vibe veeeeeery much. So. I literally do NOT know what it is. Is it like Hamilton??? Is it a Percy Jackson fanwork??? Is it neither???? You have now been given the absolute power over whatever you let me know. Because I have no clue.

OH HI FRIEND!! HI BAB!!!

Okay okay uhhh finedje. I NEVER had to pitch something to someone without the ability to just physically sit them down and like show them before cause I'm generally bad at explaining things but LEMME TRY!!!

So so, Epic the Musical is a musical concept detailing the Odyssey that is being made and like chopped up into 9 sagas! We have 8 of them now so one more to go!!!

Made by the wonderful, and very silly, Jorge Rivera-Herrans, Mr. Jalapeño himself. He wrote it with the theme of ruthlessness in mind, as in when do we adopt the philosophy of being ruthless to other people and when do we show kindness and mercy. (I may be explaining this wrong, Jorge has so many little videos explaining his process about creating Epic, i might leave a link so you can hear from the man himself)

It's not like a Percy Jackson fanmade thing, I know Jorge has read the Odyssesy and is essentially adapting it into this musical in his own way (I say this cause some people just can't comprehend it being its own thing as an adaptation). I don't think Jorge has read PJO? I could be wrong.

It could be compared to Hadestown the Musical? BUT THE ONLY SIMILAIRITY IS THE LIKE ADAPTATION OF A GREEK MYTH INTO A MUSICAL, OTHERWISE THE GENRE AND STUFF ARE VERY DIFFERENT.

I will uhhh keep note that Epic takes heavy inspiration from video games and anime which has the musical take several creative liberties and not be a one to one of the actual Odyssesy. One example of like the video game inspirations is every saga having some sort of boss battle esque song at the end, as if you are going through a video game, level by level.

And the anime inspirations are heavy in the ways Jorge uses iconic anime imagery or like I guess visual tropes in his references whenever he commissions artists to do animatics or animations.

THAT'S ANOTHER FUN THING TOO!!! Aside from the thousands of fan animatics that come out with each saga, Jorge also just commissions art, animatics and animations from artists with each new saga that he'll debut during the album's live watchparty where we listen to the whole musical up till the latest saga. So we have like fan animatics but also in a way, canon animatics and animations on how things go down.

He puts so much care into the music and the like themes and and uhhh musical terms escaping my head but he carries over chracters and their musical motifs so well throughout the story.

He also uhhh does open auditions to EVERYONE like ANYONE could audition for Epic with just leads to so many hidden gems of singers and songwriters that he just hypes up so much, he hypes up their work in Epic and their own personal musical endeavors.

Some of the amazing cast are: Teagen Earley who plays Athena, TROY who plays Hermes, Steven Dookie as Polites, Talya Sindel as Circe, Barbara Wangui as Calypso. Of course, Jorge himself plays Odysseus and he is also just incredible vocally.

HE ALSO uhhh casts his family members in this which is super fun and wholesome and I won't spoil who they play cause its such a fun treat to discover as you listen.

Aaaaaaaaaaa what else-

It is also very silly, we get quite a few silly moments and I really enjoy that. Jorge is really good with sprinkling the silly moments in between the songs and just delivering such a good experience. A lot of the silly moments just become memes and that's also a fun time.

I just love the way he adapted the musical in this very very unique and amazing thing, it's this phenomenon of like story telling and music and also just a collaboration of art between not just the cast who come from so many places but also the HUGE community and I think that's the most special part, y'know?

WIP Wednesday 5.3.23

Happy Hump Day, tumblrs! I feel as if I have been MIA for a hot minute, but as usual it’s life getting in the way. I’m adulting for a lot of folks in my life right now, which doesn’t leave much time for Robin and what she wants to do. Toss in a job search, a carpal tunnel flare-up, and a car accident (no injuries, cosmetic damage which requires more time (it gonna take effort and rental car set-up to  make my baby pretty again) and a deductible), and … yeah.

However, I am working as best I can on getting stories out of my head and onto the screen; not a lot of snippets but plenty of synopses below the cut if anyone is interested.

Gossip Girls (inspired by CFCW’s #YouGoGirl event): No way will I finish this story by May 4 (Star Wars Day, yay!), hence the “inspired by”.

Queen Riley of Cordonia is having a much-needed, long-awaited brunch with her girls Annabelle Parsons and Yu the Chinese Waitress. There’ll be virgin mimosas, reminiscing on how their friendships began, decent food, a Riam Riley-style breakdown of the Princes’ true parentage, and Riley the Single Mother dealing with three boys who have no idea of public decorum. TCW’s Princess Marguerite may or may not make an appearance.

Fingers: For #WorldWhiskeyDay, this is a compilation of PB characters with a common denominator using liquor to soothe hurts, douse anger, and celebrate milestones.

Waiting Room (#Not Choices):  Pop culture icon Jerry Springer and the woman behind the catalyst of the Civil Rights Movement, Carolyn Bryant died on the same day. What if the Ringmaster and the Architect found themselves alone in the afterlife’s waiting room and held a conversation while awaiting the ultimate judgement?

Mun: Kida, aka Calypso

This portrayal of Peter Parker is heavily based on the MCU version of the character, but I've been a fan of this character for as long as I can remember, so there are likely comics/movies/shows influences in there as well. I write him mainly as a 21 year old, but I do also have verses in which he's still a teenager, and some where he's later in his adulthood. I'm open to writing with pretty much anyone as long as it makes sense - hence the slightly selective title. I love to mix universes, cross fandoms, do weird AUs, ship muses.. all that good stuff. Which of your muses is hardest to ship with? Which is the easiest? // The character of mine that I think is the easiest to ship with is probably Harry. He is gracefully unproblematic and his personality can really be bent with anyone. Perhaps why I have two Harry oc’s? Who knows. I think the most difficult would probably be a toss up between Ashley or Calypso. Their general attitudes can be absolutely horrendous and I can admit that here and now. 

Which muse do you feel like you write more than others? // John. Simply because I play him the most. I’m going to credit that to the fact I’ve been playing him for so long that it has become second nature.

Which muse is the most insecure? // Definitely Hayley. In her defense it is well warranted based on what all has happened to her. 

Which muse is the most confident? // Ashley is at least the best at faking her confidence.

Which muse is the friendliest? // It’s a tie between Lights and Hayley. Both of them are essentially angels when it comes to their personalities. 

Which muse would you like to ship with the most? // Right now all of my muses are pretty well fed so that’s hard to say. Shoutout to Lo for making me answer all of these questions and for giving all of my favorites muses the ships of my dreams.

Do your muses like each other? What are their relationships with other muses on your blog? // I crossed this one out because it doesn’t quite feel relevant. They’re all different universes and I’ve never put thought into it. I mean, they don’t n o t like each other!

What is the age of your muses, oldest to youngest? // I refuse to list them all off but their ages range between 22 - 32.

Do you plan to add more muses to your roster? // I don’t usually plan to add more muses, it just sort of happens. I’m sure there will be more though! I have so many faceclaims I want to use / so many characters that I love. But again.....I’m well fed.

Do you think you have too many muses, not enough or just enough? // The limit doesn’t exist? Although my answer is also just enough. I love all my children, alright?

What do your muses agree on? // The only thing they all agree on is fluid sexuality and coffee.

Why did you decide to make a multimuse as opposed to a dual-muse or single muse blog? // Seeing as I don’t write my muses on this blog I’m crossing this one out too. Although I decided to make this blog so I could find more humans to write with, look at me go!

What drew you to write on tumblr? I found it on accident! I’ve written just about all over the board. On Myspace, on roleplayer.me, on discord, on Facebook when that was a thing. I’m no stranger to it. I think that the appeal of Tumblr is that it’s the only one that hasn’t shut down already and it’s easy to save everything.

What previous platforms have you written on? Oh man, I just listed those. Just about everything. I’ve been at this for far too long.

Have you had other multimuse blogs n the past? Are they still active? I have and it’s no longer active. Just out here bein’ Yikes.

What is the maximum number of muses you’ll consider having on your blog? The limit, once again, does not exist. I will have as many muses as the world throws at me. Whoops.

Which muse have you put the most effort in? I’m going to say three because in terms of how long I’ve been playing them the award goes right to John. But in terms of how much work I’ve put into their character and their backstory it goes to Calypso. 

Which muse would you like to develop more that you haven’t? I’m really looking forward to developing Collin and Dakota. Both of them have been ridiculously fun so far and I think it can only get better from here on out.

Which muse do you not write for much but want to? Once again I am spoiled with the world’s most iconic writing buddy that let’s me write my favs whenever I want.

What do you consider to be your most liked character? I make them all so annoying, do I even have to pick? Probably Hayley. She gets the bonus of being an iconc - asskicking lady who is seemingly unproblematic a majority of the time.

What do you consider to be your least liked character? Probably Collin just because the plots he has have certainly set him up to be a bad noodle.

Do you prefer to write for OCs or Canon characters? It doesn’t matter to me. Although I don’t like taking on canon characters that I know next to nothing about. 

What are the most common themes you find in your writing? I just spend the last three hours writing an essay and so maybe it’s my bitterness that is going to make me ignore this question.

What are the most common tropes you find in your characters?  Again, same. My characters are all caffeine addicts though. Damn, y’all.

What are things you wish to write but never get a chance to? Not necessarily any topics but I definitely have ships I’ve wanted. I’ve been doing this so long I’ve pretty much written every plot that has generally appealed to me.

HAROLD GEORGE BELLANFANTI, Jr (b. 1927), better known as HARRY BELAFONTE, is a singer, actor, producer, and activist. He was born in Harlem to Jamaican parents. He is considered an icon of the folk music scene of the 1950s, and his premiere LP in, Calypso (1956), was the first platinum selling LP by a single artist. Belafonte spent his youth between Jamaica and the United States. When he came of age in the 1940s, he joined the US Navy to fight in WWII. After his service, he worked in New York City as a janitor. He received the acting bug when a client tipped him with tickets to the American Negro Theater, and he fell in love with performance art. Already a talented vocalist, he became a local club singer to finance his acting classes. His first live vocal performance was backed by the Charlie Parker Band, which included Parker, Max Roach, and Miles Davis. As his star rose, Belafonte would release four albums that would at least make the Billboard top forty, he hosted TV specials alongside Julie Andrews, and he guest hosted The Tonight Show for a week in February 1968, wear he interviewed Martin Luther King, Jr and Robert F. Kennedy. Outside of the recording studio, Belafonte was a popular movie star, starring in Carmen Jones, Bright Road, and Island in the Sun, among others. Like Sidney Poitier and Dorothy Dandridge, he refused to take on roles that negatively stereotyped people of color. Throughout his career Belafonte was an avid human rights activist, citing Paul Robeson as somewhat of a mentor. He was close friends with Martin Luther King, Jr, and he and friend Sidney Poitier often raised money and participated in civil actions and throughout the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. He interwove his career with his activism by producing performances to raise funds for grassroots organizations. When performing on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, Belafonte performed a number while intercutting footage from the 1968 Democratic National Convention riots. CBS censored the segment. Tumblr’s getting a new owner

“By March 2019, the site lost nearly one-third of its users, Mashable reported. Selling Tumblr for under $3 million may seem shocking, but Tumblr never fit Verizon’s business culture. So why not cut the losses and off-load the brand to a business that knows what it doing?”

“Automattic has four key long-term plans for Tumblr: Unload Tumblr from Verizon’s infrastructure, implement the same API for Tumblr and WordPress.com, switch Tumblr over to the WordPress CMS in its back-end, and create an open-source Tumblr.com client “similar to Calypso,” Post Status reports. This last piece is promising for a more free and transparent Tumblr service: Calypso is an open-source interface for managing WordPress.com and sites using its plugin Jetpack.”

“Tumblr will stay separate from WordPress as a brand, and while the site will embrace a WordPress back-end in due time, Post Status reports the front-end will largely stay the same. A plugin ecosystem similar to WordPress’s may be possible once Tumblr runs on WordPress. But Automattic will usher WordPress in slowly.”

why did you choose your url?

When I started playing World Of Warcraft sometime in 2007, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End had just come out, and I named my first character / oc Kalyppso because Calypso was taken, and she was named after the Tia Dalma character. I later also named a Hawke from Dragon Age 2 this, and it was the name of my character in Animal Crossing New Leaf.

I've tried starting two but never stuck with them. It's easier just to pile everything together and hope for the best.

how long have you been on tumblr?

Since 2013. I joined when you could still use your 3DS to upload photos directly from Animal Crossing New Leaf to a tumblr blog.

There was a time when I queued things, but even then I didn't have a queue tag.

why did you start your blog in the first place?

To share patterns for outfits I made in Animal Crossing.

why did you choose your icon?

My friend @crxwes was making emoji style art and I asked for my oc Fae (who looked more like Byleth at the time) to have a Thinking Emoji style piece and then I slapped some pride flags in the background that apply to both me and them, and here we are.

why did you choose your header?

More art from crxwes! I was really sick for a while and he made me a series of four very cute art pieces of Claude lazily waking and said he was looking over me while I was sick. ;w; It was amazingly sweet. He added color to one and I used it for a while and then he painted over it a final time and that's still what I'm using.

Not really. If someone says something rude I MIGHT MAYBE — if i'm in the mood — engage once, but then I'll block and move on.

I take them on a case by case basis, but I think most people have moved on to saying "please reblog this" and that has an entirely different energy.

I do! For the most part. Some get really personal for no reason.

which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous?

When is a blog tumblr famous? Many of my mutuals have like a single post with a thousand notes. Some of the artists have a few pieces in the hundreds, but I'd still be surprised if people knew them outside of their own circles.

do you have a crush on a mutual?

In the sense that I'm a little in love with most people I meet? Sure. In the sense that I want to be in a relationship with anyone in particular? No, not really.
