BnHA Chapter 271: My Hero Tokodemia

Previously on BnHA: Mic was all “goodbye X-Less don’t do anything I wouldn’t do” and just LEFT him with Tomura, like. ???! X-Less was all “I’m gonna sit here and do nothing and wait to die.” Ujiko was all “this has nothing to do with ANYTHING but I just want you to know that I conspired to murder your husband 15 years ago and ended up killing his best friend instead!” Tomura was all “what up bitches I’m in this chapter too” and had trippy dreams about hands and buildings and his family was there and also All for One (the dude)! Because guess what, Tomura has All For One (the quirk) now! Because AFO gave it to him! So yeah! And now he’s waking up, and Deku can apparently feel it happening because he’s a horcrux probably, and so basically everything is FINALLY GOING TO SHIT AND IT’S ABOUT TIME BUT ALSO AHHHHH.

Today on BnHA: SHIGARAKI WHO TOMURA WHAT. Back to Gunga Mountain! So Dabi is all “you do know your beloved mentor just killed a guy right?” and Toko is all “!!” and Dabi is all “SO THAT MAKES HIM THE WORST CRIMINAL OF ALL!” and, WITHOUT THE SLIGHTEST HINT OF IRONY, IMMEDIATELY follows up this bold statement by TRYING TO BURN A CHILD ALIVE. Anyway so this is why Dabi wasn’t the keynote speaker at the “murder is bad” convention though. So most of the chapter is like this, with Dabi (albeit somewhat halfheartedly) trying to set Toko on fire while Toko desperately tries to keep between him and Hawks. Eventually though, Dabi is confusingly thwarted by Otter Pops, making his triumphant return and spraying a bunch of ice just every which way because things weren’t chaotic enough I guess! And then the chapter ends with everyone’s favorite Guy They Hoped Wouldn’t Be Waking Up In This Arc, Gigantomachia, waking up!! :’) :’) :’) etc you get it.

okay so I am please to clarify that the spoilers I received were not actually all that big of a deal, and that pretty much all I know is that we’re cutting back to Dabi and Tokoyami probably, and there’s a good chance we might not even see Tomura at all this chapter in spite of last week’s cliffhanger. so even if I’d have preferred not to know that up front, it’s all good! though I will say Horikoshi has a real knack for cutting away from things right when you’re at your most invested though. reminds me of what it was like reading Lord of the Rings for the first time. “nooo I don’t want to cut back to Frodo -- WAIT WHAT’S GOING ON -- NO I DON’T WANT TO CUT BACK TO MERRY AND PIPPIN DAMMIT -- WAIT WHAT”

so then! those spoilers did indeed have the ring of truth! well this should be interesting

Fatgum you do realize you were in the running for #2 hero but have now bled serious points by letting a child run back into danger and doing absolutely nothing to stop him! although to be fair you do have other children to protect, and this one child also should not have been able to do what he just did! and also Child Endangerment is U.A.’s unofficial motto and you didn’t even go to U.A. but you would fit right in though let me tell you. but anyway so the point is this isn’t really anything new, but still

I hope we get a followup panel of Kaminari freaking out and trying to go after his pal (but not actually succeeding though, because I swear to god Fatgum, if you fuck this up again all of my remaining goodwill is just gonna fly right out the window. and it’s a lot of goodwill too! but we don’t screw around when it comes to children’s safety!!). just would be a nice touch! ah well if they don’t show it I’ll just headcanon it

last but not least, it’s also worth noting that while I love how brave and selfless and concerned for his mentor’s wellbeing Tokoyami is here, this was still an incredibly stupid move on his part! least of all because he actually had no idea that Hawks truly was in danger. is it weird to say he lucked out? “you’re so fortunate your teacher actually was being burned alive you reckless little goose!” but like, you know what I mean though right

I mean yeah, it’s probably just some gut instinct which funnily enough happens to be absolutely right. but I’m sorry you guys, there’s just this small part of me that just can’t get over the fact that he briefly saw Hawks flying for all of .2 seconds, and saw some flames, and just IMMEDIATELY leapt to the worst-case-scenario conclusion. you know what this is? it’s the decision-making process of a kid who is actually WAY more powerful than we’ve been giving him credit for. enough so that his self-preservation instincts don’t even kick in at all because it doesn’t even occur to him how dangerous of a move this is. goddammit Tokoyami. you kids think you’re all grown up now and ffff just please be safe

and okay, I’ll give Fatgum some benefit of the doubt for just letting that happen because apparently this is literally the first and only time

seems he didn’t even think it was possible up until now. so that’s fair

so he’s immediately following after him, but is smart enough not to put the other kids in danger! good split-second decision-making there. certain other people in this chapter could take notes! and of course my one fear now though is that the other three children will not listen to him at all, but you know what, let’s deal with one thing at a time

I literally have not made up my mind on Dabi redemption one way or the other, just to be clear (he’s just been too mysterious up till now and I feel like I don’t know enough), so I am super curious to see how this plays out so I can finally form an opinion!

One More Thing to Deal With

“How about one where dan-o grows fangs as part of his ghost self maturing… How will everyone react in school when Danny suddenly looks like a vampire?” - “Guest” (a Guest) on fanfiction.net (Supplemented by @danphanwritingprompts on Tumblr: “When you walk the fine line of being both dead and alive, it shouldn’t be much of a shocker to find out that it renders you immortal to aging and natural death.”)

Ch.1 of “Adventures of Alex the Vampire Hunter”

“That’s the fifth one this week, right?” asked Sam. “Yeah…” Danny grunted. “They’re really that fast?” asked Tucker. “Seems like it,” Danny grumbled. “Jeez… That’s rough, man.”

For the past couple weeks, random citizens of Amity Park had been attacked by what they described as a “vampire ghost.” And every time Danny’s ghost sense would go off, he’d go to catch it -- but it would be gone by the time he got there. And it wasn’t like he had to stall to come up with an excuse to leave anymore; he’d long since decided to play the “quiet, no-trouble teen” to avoid unnecessary questions. (And besides, everyone was used to him rushing out of rooms without warning by now. It was “normal.”)

“And now, not only do I have to deal with a vampire, I have to deal with looking like one, too!” “Woah! Your fangs came in?!” Walking backwards now, Sam leaned around in front of him, staring at his mouth. He opened it obligingly. “Awesome…!” Danny closed his mouth with a snap. “Glad you’re enjoying it.”

She returned to walking on Danny’s right. “Come on. How can you expect me NOT to love it? But that does make me wonder -- weren’t they only supposed to show up in-” “-In my ghost form? Yeah, they were. And none of the ghosts know what’s going on, either. I even asked Vlad. And y’know what he said?” He wrinkled his nose and gave his best Vlad impression: “‘It’s probably because your ghost and human halves are more connected and balanced than my own. Why, you might even be immortal, my boy!’” Sam and Tuck’s eyes widened. “Duuuude… That. Would. Be. -” “I swear, if you say ‘awesome,’ I’m not playing Doomed with you for a month.” “But wouldn’t it!?” “Maybe, but I’m not exactly planning on checking!”

“Well, look at the bright side,” Sam interjected. “At least the fangs aren’t that noticeable.” Danny raised an eyebrow at her. “They really aren’t!” said Tucker, patting Danny on the shoulder. “If you guys are sure.” He sighed, “…Not that there’s anything I could do about it anyway. I tried filing them down and they just came back after I transformed.” Leaning back, he put his hands behind his head and looked at the sky. “Whatever. Just one more thing I have deal with.”

Alex walked into the office, put the slip of paper in their hand in the tray, and walked right back out. It was a doctor’s note for their cousin Avery. They’d been attacked by the vampire and, because of their anemia, Avery had had to stay home for the day. Everyone kept saying Phantom would catch this “ghost” soon, but Alex knew better. They’d lived in Amity their whole lives. Ghosts don’t suck blood. Not even so-called “vampire ghosts!” And now… Alex could do something about it!

They’d noticed it during lunch: The boy with the fangs. It was odd, because no one else seemed to care. They’d pointed out the boy to one of their upper-classmen friends, who just shrugged and said “The Fentons are weird.” So they’d asked around more -- but kept getting the same answers: Sure, he got injured a lot. Sure, he healed fast. Sure, he didn’t really talk to anyone anymore. Sure, he ran off randomly sometimes. Sure, he didn’t look any different in his senior year than he did as a freshman. And sure, his canine teeth looked longer than normal now. But, hey. “The Fentons are weird.”

So it was up to Alex.

Sunlight didn’t affect him, clearly. So they tried the most inconspicuous thing first: They dumped a bottle of holy water on him. … Nothing happened. Next they tried putting garlic in his food during lunch. It took a few days, but they knew a ghost attack would happen. And when it did, they used the distraction. … But he ate it just fine.

Alex was almost ready to admit they were wrong -- but they had one more trick up their sleeves. Alex took the sharp, needle-like end of one of their spiral notebooks -- and twisted it out just a centimeter. And when they passed Danny in the hallway, they managed to scratch his arm. He flinched, hissed, and quickly tried to hide it -- but too late. Alex kept walking, but they saw it. His arm healed almost immediately.

So when Avery was attacked again, and this time… sent to the hospital… Alex knew what they had to do.

Danny might not have been the brightest student, but he’d gotten pretty good instincts after three years of fighting ghosts. He’d had to. So of course he’d noticed the freshman following him around.

He wasn’t sure what their problem was with him, but he figured it was just a case of a new person being weirded-out by “that Fenton kid.” He didn’t expect them to stop staring at him for while -- he even expected they might prank him again, like with the water-bottle. But he DEFINITELY wasn’t expecting to get freaking stabbed through the heart with a wooden stake!!!

… But when it didn’t kill him… He did the only thing he could think of: called Sam and Tuck. “So, uh… Good news and bad news. “The good news is: It looks like I AM immortal. Bad news:

“I think I just scarred a Freshman for life.”

Over the course of its existence, there have been many examples of antisemitism at WisCon—a trend often echoed in other leftist spaces, where microaggressions to naked hostility to just plain erasure keep occurring. Let's talk about why this continues to happen, why it's so rarely talked about, and what we can do to prevent it.

There’s a context for all of this, which is why I’m linking to my panel write-ups as they served as a space for others to share what they heard and experienced so that you can understand this context and also understand that this wasn’t just a couple of people upset - there was a large audience for this panel and lots and lots of us were upset, and lots of us made reports to the concom, and there is a consensus about what happened. 2) I add all of this because the panel I’m about to write up also had a disturbance in regards to what happened last year and I want to make sure there is full context for what happened with That, as well. 3) Also of note: I had to edit out the tags “nazis” and “antisemitism” for my linked post to appear in my own tags on my own tumblr blog so fuck that noise. I’m getting angrier and angrier about tumblr’s tagging rules - we should be able to tag shit like that for content warnings for fuck’s sake. Anyway, on to the actual write-up. 4) Well, one last note - the panel is, obviously, talking about incidents of experienced antisemitism at both WisCon and in other leftist spaces and it was hard for me, who is not Jewish, to take that all in. So be prepared that this is a difficult, but very important, conversation about to be reported on.]

Notes:

Becky began the panel by saying she was both sad and glad to be doing this. Everyone on this panel is Jewish, and everyone on the panel has experienced antisemitic microaggressions here at WisCon at some point or another.

Jessica said the incident last year was the most extreme one, but certainly not the first.

Paul introduced himself as a lawyer for public policy at a non-profit and said that he has experienced antisemitism here and in every progressive space he’s ever been in.

Gerri introduced herself saying that she is 74 years old and that she has experienced antisemitism her whole life. Her parents escaped the Ukraine after WWI and she grew up hearing horror stories.

Becky gave some background on what happened at the Killable Bodies panel last year. She added that safety did a good job at handling things after it all happened.

Jessica added that she proposed this panel due to what happened at that panel.

At this point, someone in the audience popped in, asking if we were going to talk about the specifics of that panel and arguing about what was really said. It was clear that this person was friends with the panelist who said the offending comments last year and he was defending her and arguing with the panelists about their own experiences at that panel. Both Jessica and Becky worked to shut him down, and I noticed several folks in the audience standing up and getting ready to escort this person out if necessary. Becky finally said that if he kept on, he would have to leave - or he could be quiet and remain and listen. He chose to remain quiet, and remained so for the duration (at least to my knowledge - he was seated a bit away from me, but I didn’t hear any more interruptions, at least).

Jessica went back to explaining about how she proposed this panel. She was worried there might not be enough people to be on the panel - some of the people she approached had said maybe, to go ahead and suggest the panel and put them on as possibilities.

[As a side note - there are a couple of ways of staffing a panel like this. One, which is what Jessica did, is to suggest some possible panelists and programming can see about adding them to the list but other people can still volunteer to be on the panel. The other is to hand-staff a panel, which means the person proposing the panel has already specified who should be on the panel and it is otherwise closed to other panelists. This is often done when a panel absolutely has to have a certain demographic - such as a panel like this which necessitates an all Jewish panel or a panel about trans issues where you want everyone on the panel to be trans, etc.]

So, Jessica had gone with that first way and suggested some possible panelists, but there was a mix-up with programming and all of the names of the suggested panelists were listed as panelists, the panel was closed to volunteers, and private communication that Jessica had submitted to programming was also added to the published panel information.

This was problematic for a number of reasons. One reason is that the people Jessica has suggested were all people in her own friend group, which included mostly people similar to herself. This was keeping voices different from herself from being on the panel, including people marginalized for other reasons.

Another problem was the listing of names of people who had not decided if they wanted to be on the panel or not. For obvious historical reasons (and the panel gets into this in more detail a little later), public lists of Jewish people causes a lot of anxiety for Jewish folks.

At this point, Becky and Jessica acknowledged that most microaggressions are not intentional. They don’t think, for example, that programming did any of this on purpose.

Gerri said that she wasn’t here last year, but that she’s been coming to WisCon for a long time. She said WisCon used to be mostly people talking about books they’ve read. She remembers many years ago when she’d read Wandering Stars: A Jewish Anthology of Fantasy and Science and Fiction by Jack Dann and she was excited to be reading stories about Jews in space.

Gerri recommended the book to someone at WisCon and that person kind of took a step back and said “I didn’t know you were one of those.” Everyone else in the group walked away, leaving her to confront this on her own. He then asked her if her name was her real name.

Gerri was raised by parents who were always telling her to get ready for when she was no longer welcomed. But even living in a world with a lot of overt antisemitism, she didn’t really believe them about that until the moment described above.

Paul talked about how 11-20% of Jews in the US are POC, that Jews are poor and middle class at the same rates as everyone else, and that these are things people don’t always understand. He also said they were not going to discuss Israel on this panel, adding there could be a whole entire con just about that, but that one thing that happens, especially in leftist spaces, is a conflation of Israel with Zionism and Zionism with Judaism and Judaism with every individual Jewish person.

Jessica told about a panel a few years back about Agent Carter. The focus was on the lack of diversity, which was true. But season two heavily implied that Howard Stark came from a Jewish family who had changed their name. The moderator of that panel waved it away as not very important. Jessica, in the audience, had tweeted using the # for the panel about how significant that representation was to her. The mod saw the tweet during the panel and apologized.

Jessica also said that friends of hers who were not here shared their own stories about incidents involving everything from off-color Anne Frank jokes to serious incidents that were brought to safety.

Becky said that they all kept repeating that they know most of these things are not malicious, but she wants to acknowledge that they still hurt. She wants people to think harder about these things, but she’s not trying to call specific people out right now.

Becky added that as a white Jewish person, she’s in a liminal space of privilege and oppression. She notes that leftists do these kinds of microaggressions a lot, but they’re the ones that should care about Not doing them.

Gerri talked about how fandom began with a lot of Jewish people. So when she got into it, she felt it would be safe. Many cons used to have spaces for services programmed in and one even had a Passover room with food they could eat during the holiday. She’s not sure how or when that went away, but she misses it. Some of it might be the lack of ability to accommodate all religions.

Gerri also talked about conversations that end up leading to “those Jews and their banks”. She objects, but has been told she doesn’t understand because she’s Jewish. “I understand I didn’t have toys as a child because we were too poor.” People try and take it back and it can be hard not to just say it’s okay.

Jessica talked about more of these things people believe falsely about Jewish people. One is the “Christ killer” thing. In a poll she saw, 60% of Americans believe that Jews killed Jesus. Actually - it was the Romans.

Paul said intent in these things doesn’t always matter. For example, he was told Jews make the best lawyers - this is supposed to be a compliment, but it isn’t.

Paul and Jessica talked about some of the antisemitic dog whistles that people use such as “globalist” and “lizard people” - it used to be “Hollywood.”

Becky added that there are a lot of fannish memes that use the lizard people one - folks don’t get that it originates from antisemitism. (Example: “I, for one, support our new lizard overlords.”)

Becky also talked about growing up in a small town where hers was the only Jewish family. She was asked if she had horns, and was asked to come to church with friends so that she wouldn’t go to hell.

Becky said that Jewish people are always in fear of when it might be time to pack up and leave. Trumpism is making that fear feel very real right now. The idea of knowing there are people in her neighborhood who want her dead is hard. But it’s also hard that with the people she organizes with politically - events are often held on Jewish holidays. “I can’t organize on Yom Kippur - I’m too hungry!”

Jessica talked about a time she was in France and didn’t want to go with friends to the Jewish museum because she didn’t want to telegraph her Jewishness. She grew up in Brooklyn and believed when she was younger that all white people were Jewish. Then she moved to NJ and heard her first Jewish jokes, and learned about “looking Jewish.”

Jessica told a story about a boy she and her friend both had a crush on. But then she heard this boy make a joke about someone who was Jewish, saying “oh he must be hiding in the oven.” Her friend said it was no big deal and that Jews should get over the holocaust.

Jessica said that the holocaust was the largest manifestation of antisemitic genocide, but that is because technology allowed it to be. Jewish history is full of examples of genocide. The joke about Jewish holidays is “they tried to kill us, they failed, let’s eat.”

Paul brought up the concept of generational trauma. Even if it hasn’t happened to you or in your lifetime, knowing your culture’s history and being told about it from your elders instills trauma all the same.

Becky posed the question to the panelists of how they would like to see WisCon and other spaces supporting Jewish people.

Paul talked about Jewish holidays not being recognized. Also - when antisemitic microaggressions happen - someone else needs to step in. It can’t only be Jewish people doing the work themselves.

Gerri said to simply think before speaking and if something comes out bad - apologize and mean it. Then work harder at it.

Jessica said she thought the idea of services was a good one. She added that she requested this panel be on a Sunday due to Shabbat.

Jessica would also like more recognition about the pluralism of Jewishness. And generally just more axis of diversity when it comes to all religions.She notes that even discussions of atheism tend to come through a Christian lens.

Becky said that a lot of things that are considered to be secular or neutral are not. For example: Christmas.

Jessica added she’d like the removal of the phrase Judeo-Christian. It means nothing. If you mean Abrahamic religions, say that, and make sure you’re including Islam.

Gerri advised asking questions so that you don’t unintentionally hurt people.

Becky talked about a panel this year about Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and The Good Place. Someone had said that Judaism was not used in the main character on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Becky had raised her hand to say that no, her Judaism was important. The panelist apologized and admitted they were out of their lane. It was a good exchange. If something is said wrong in good faith - it’s not an issue for it to be brought up.

Jessica added that one of the core values of Judaism is asking questions.

That said, Becky said it was time for audience questions but set some guidelines first. No talking about Israel, as that’s a derail. No oppression olympics. The panelists are allowed to stop or to just not answer if they wish. And there will be no denying any of the panelists experiences.

The first audience question was about how to better understand Jewish experiences.

Gerri didn’t have a specific rec because each book or perspective is just one out of many.

Jessica talked about the difficulty in rec-ing a list of Jewish authors without creating a Nazi hit list. But she added that a lot of our pop culture is Jewish - comic books, comedy, musical theater, etc.

Gerri rec’d an old movie - Gentleman’s Agreement with Gregory Peck.

Paul said that a useful exercise is when watching media and a Jewish character is on screen - how are we being treated? Often, it’s not good.

An audience member rec’d the wikipedia article on antisemitism.

Becky said - what if we stopped having space Jews who are greedy, such as the Ferengi.

Jessica said the only good Jews in space is Mel Brook’s Jews in Space.

Someone in the audience discussed the conspiracy theories about cabals and Jewish people having secret privilege. This undercuts the actual oppression of Jewish people. Antisemitism is getting bolder again, so we have to be more loud about confronting it. There is a culture of assimilation due to the fear of “being on the list” and the trauma around that. The audience member acknowledged they were layering questions within questions, but Jessica said “no, this is very Jewish, keep going!”

Gerri said that when she was growing up, Jews were loud. Her mom would tell her to be more quiet or they’ll think you’re Jewish. She was like, well I am Jewish! But there can be a real fear that being loud might cause you to die.

Paul recommends punching Nazi’s every day.

Jessica advised allies to ask how to best support. She gave the example of the triple parenthesis issue on twitter, which was something supremacists were using to designate people they thought were Jewish. Some people started using the triple parenthesis on purpose in protest, but this was very upsetting to a lot of Jewish people due, again, to the issue of the list, being publicly Jewish, the generational trauma there, etc. Jessica said to speak for Jewish people when necessary, but never over them.

Becky asked the panelists for last words or rec’s.

Gerri said Isaac Asimov

Paul said there are lots of resources at Jews for Racial and Economic Justice.

Becky said Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, also the author Katherine Locke - specifically The Girl with the Red Balloon, a time travel book with Jewish characters.

Jessica said there are too few YA speculative fiction books with Jewish characters. She does recommend early comics by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, etc. Superman, Spider-Man, and others are all based on Jewish themes. She also recommended the first Independence Day movie and Rose Lerner’s romance novels.

And that’s all I got! Also my last write-up for this year. The other panels I attended, I just didn’t get enough decent notes down to make a write-up worthwhile. Might make a round-up post and add some comments on the panels I was on, but not sure.

Let’s Talk About Georgia

All right so most of my followers including my international followers know that those of us in the US have been dealing with a giant orange toddler being placed in our highest office and everyone with a brain having a panic attack about it, while the dumbest and/or most racist, sexist, homophobic, and otherwise bigoted of our people think this is just great. You know, Russia meddling, Twitter tantrums, that whole thing.

Well, barring someone finding some truly damning evidence that the GOP can no longer ignore, the earliest the sane people of this country can get even a little control back in the long run in 2018, when our next big election year is. No we can’t get rid of the Orange Menace but we can reduce the strangehold his party has on our legislative branch of government, since about a third of one body is up for re-election and the entirety of the other house is also up for re-election, as well as a smattering of local and state level races as well. However, special elections do come up to fill vacanies, and we had two of those last night.

(This got long so I’m going to do my followers a favor hide the rest of the post from their dashboards)

Democrats (those would be the good guys) decided to throw all of their money and backing into one of those elections, although the guy in the other race apparently did a lot better than anyone predicted he would so maybe they should have gone after that race? Either way they didn’t, they went after the seat representing Georgia’s sixth distract.

What’s interest about both races is that they are VERY conservative districts that, in any other election, Democrats probably wouldn’t have bothered with because there just isn’t a path to victory in those places...normally. And while both Democrats lost the chance to give our side some much needed ground in the legislative battles ahead, it does paint an interesting picture that I think a lot of people are missing.

Deep red districts are suddenly competitive in this political environment. Imagine what would happen in a swing district under the same circumstance.

While a lot of people are decrying “close isn’t good enough they still lost”, well, that really isn’t all there is to it. Again, these are deeply conservative districts and the GOP was fighting tooth and nail to keep that seat out of Georgia in a district where they have had to do it. Unless, you know, the leader of their party is an extremely unpopular idiot.

Again, I would have been THRILLED to see the SC or GA races go blue this time out but that didn’t happen. And while that’s going to make legislative battles until 2019 nightmare fuel for anyone who isn’t a straight white dude that understands how bad this administration and the GOP at large are, it still bodes well for the next big election cycle. People are mad and in more competitive districts that’s going to be HUGE.

I’ve got a friend on Facebook (really one of my mom’s friends) who is a die-heard Clinton fan to the point where she might actually hate Bernie Sanders even more than Tiny Hands McGee and seems to be of the opinion that Democrats shouldn’t change anything - they won the popular vote, after all, so who cares about moderates and independents?

Well, she should - like, oh boy, she really, REALLY should.

Here’s the thing - the Democratic base is going to go for the Democratic candidate most of the time and the mouth-breathers voting for the GOP really just need to see the troglodytes they vote into office go “look, a gay person exists!” to be whipped up into a foaming at the mouth hate frenzy in the voting booth. You’re not going to get me to vote for a Republican unless the Democrat has done something completely abhorrent (which is not the non-story that was Benghazi and certainly not over a fucking email server) and you’re not going to get GOP voters to vote blue unless their guy like, brags about sexually assaulting women-wait, no, they actually did that time, maybe if they assault a reporter-no, no, they voted that guy in, too, maybe insinuating children should starve OH COME ON GOP VOTERS WHAT THE FUCK!?* No, the voters both parties need to be clammoring for are independents and moderate voters, the people in the middle who don’t feel strongly about one side or the other. Last year those people either stayed home, wrote in Bernie in their own version of a foaming at the mouth temper tantrum, or got nervous because of the 2016 version of the Comey memo**. These are the people whose votes ACTUALLY MATTER. Moderate and independent voters living in swing states are the ONLY people who matter in US elections.

Does this suck? YES. YES IT DOES. The US probably needs to get at least one more major party into the fray in order to balance things out a bit, but that’s a whole different blog post because there’s issues with that aren’t really relevant here. The point is that whether we like it or not, this is the state of American politics right now. You have TWO choices for the most important political figrues representing you - sometimes, SOMETIMES you get an Independent or Libertarian governor or senator somewhere, but NEVER the POTUS - and that’s IT. Americans had to choose between Hillary Clinton, a flawed but otherwise incredibly qualified candidate, or Putin’s Pee Pee Tape Puppet. Moderate voters in a small number of swing states decided this election. And while those people failed us this time, those are the people who CAN be won over and we need going forward.

And the good news is? They’re already pissed. Toupee the Terrible has a whopping 64% disapproval rating, the highest the rating has been for the last several presidents (as in I’m not even sure RICHARD NIXON ever had a disapproval rating that high and that guy resigned in shame). He also got there in record time - he’s yet to have a net positive approval rating (though he cited one pollster that gave him a 50% but I’m suspecting that pollster may have mostly polled GOP voters) and since his approval rating is about a 35-36, that means its basically his base of die-hard racist fans vs. literally everyone else. Yeah, maybe those people weren’t enough to win Georgia or South Carolina but they represented a massive swing towards the left in those districts, like 20 percentage points worth. Now imagine those kinds of numbers in districts that were a lot closer than 20 points.

Now this is still really bad - like, SUPER bad. And sadly, this administration probably will kill people. Ever see this picture floating around Tumblr?

Yeah, the height of the AIDS crisis happened during the Reagan administration and was largely ignored because it mostly affected the LGBTQ population and the GOP doesn’t really give a shit about them. They probably didn’t act until they realized that straight people, especially straight white people, could be infected via blood transfusions. Today’s GOP has done a LOT of stuff to hurt people, though the big two are pulling out of the Paris Accords (for fuck’s sake NORTH KOREA has the moral high ground over us on this issue***) and the AHCA, which is basically just a giant tax cut to rich people at the cost of healthcare for everyone else. There is a six year old CHILD in DC lobbying to save the ACA because it’s believed that there’s a good chance the new bill will get rid of the ban on lifetime limits, meaning if an insurance company sees you’ve already spent $1 million in medical bills over the course of your lifetime you don’t get any insurance for the rest of you life, and this poor kid reached that TWO TIMES before he was even a year old.

This is going to get voters angry. Most people know someone with a pre-existing condition and once voters see those people they love getting screwed by the new healthcare bill they won’t be happy. You all know someone in your personal life with a pre-existing condition, and if you somehow don’t, I am both an asthma patient and a cancer survivor. EITHER could get me dropped from my insurance if the GOP gets their way.

Okay that started to get off topic as I increasingly couldn’t figure out a way to end this so...yeah, go vote blue in 2018.

*Yeah you know who the first one is but the second two? Those are both real GOP candidates who really won elections in 2017. Apparently the GOP is now the party of reporter punching and starving children.

**This number is a lot harder to pin down but unfair voting laws also probably blocked people from voting. See, unless you’re a minor or a felon, you cannot be denied the right to vote in this country, but that doesn’t mean the GOP hasn’t figured out ways to make it REALLY hard for “certain voters” (usually this means minority voters) to get to the polls. This usually comes in two flavors:

1. Limiting the number of polling places in left-leaning neighborhoods. This means the lines at the polling places that ARE open are a lot longer, so voters will a) get frustrated and leave or b) leave because they have other commitments, such as their jobs, that they have to return to. Employers HAVE to give you time off to vote but it’s like, two hours or something like that. It’s very feasible that a crowded, left-leaning neighborhood with only one polling place when they should really have two or three or more may have wait times even LONGER than that. Pretty sure that in these cases lots of polling stations open up in right leaning neighborhoods.

2. Voter ID laws. Now in theory this one isn’t completely terrible, it’s what they do with these laws in practice that makes it a problem. A lot of these voters the GOP doesn’t like (remember, minority voters) may have a harder time getting a state-issued ID, either because there aren’t enough government offices issuing IDs (similar to the insufficient poling place problem) and the ones that do exist may be hours away from left-leaning communities, the office has a difficult schedule to work with (as in sometimes these offices may only be open for something like a few hours a couple of days a week) or they’re cost prohibitive to people with already tight budgets to work with.

Other flavors usually involves getting rid of or not implementing programs that make voting easier, such as early voting, same day voter registration, or mail-in ballots, all of which make it MUCH easier to vote.

***Yes, North Korea is a part of the Paris Accords - so’s Russia and basically every other country the US doesn’t play nice with. The only other countries that aren’t in the agreement are Syria, which is currently engaged in really brutal civil war right now so they aren’t really in a position to get involved in stuff like this right now, and Nicaragua, which didn’t sign on because they didn’t think it was strict enough. I suppose there are probably some micronations and unrecognized nations that probably aren’t on the treaty, either, but we’re talking about a microscopic segment of the world population. Lord Dampnut pulled us out to make his buddies in the energy industry happy and/or to continue erasing President Obama’s accomplishments because of that one time he made fun of him at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner. Because he is a petulant child.

SnK Chapter 89 Poll Results

This poll closed with 770 entries. It was a lot to go through, but I appreciate the all the support. The poll was posted on Reddit and Tumblr, so I’m hopeful it’s a solid snapshot of how the fandom views the events of chapter 89.

What happened on the roof was too significant a moment for the characters to be completely unchanged by it. Anger, trust issues, grief were cited as factors. Interesting, many people saw the change as a potential positive.

My favorite positive comment:

Change, yes, but not necessarily damage. Their relationships will grow from this just as they have through every other arc.

This comment made me nod my head solemnly:

I REALLY hope so. I hated the serumbowl, but if it happened it might as well have some meaning and not have all the drama be just outta the moment. I wanna believe the characters have a say in where the story goes, and it's not just convenient so the plot can move to where Isayama wants to.

Many respondents noticed a general numbness in Levi’s demeanor. Several want to wait and see. But at this point, only 12.9% of respondents think Levi’s relationship with Eren and Mikasa is permanently damaged.

Levi doesn't seem to care about what's happening around him anymore, i don't think he''ll care about his relationships anymore. He looks like he's even starting to ignore his duties as a soldier.

I was expecting a more emotional response out of Levi but he's still hanging there. A lot of fans think he's much more distant after losing his liege but I feel like this sentiment is often what the fans want to see rather than what is happening? Levi behaves pretty kind to the kids the past few chapters though, even though they played a large part in his decision. Only time will tell I guess but I do wonder about his mental state...

Levi's rationality will help him cope with Erwin's loss in so many ways. On the other hand, his compassion will always make him understand what it's like to be in other people's shoes. After all the revelations, I'm pretty sure he has also considered Eren & Armin's time limit, and how Mikasa is taking it. He has always been that kind of person, rational and strong but never lacking in compassion.

To the mind of many, Hange is far less forgiving than Levi. 73% of respondents think her trust and faith in Eren and Mikasa is damaged, and 26.5% believe it’s permanent.

“Bitter Hanji is my life source. I need her backstory like I need air.”

Despite Hange’s open disagreement with Levi over the serum, 89% of respondents think their relationship will be ok. I agree.

The good news: 70.8% do not think Hange’s being cruel. Hange is stressed, heartbroken and grieving, and that may be making them more short-tempered than normal, but their behavior is not unreasonable.

The bad news: 20% of the fandom think she is being cruel. As someone on Reddit suggested, maybe we should put a fence around them.

I'm sorry for Eren, but also Hanji is really tired right now. She has a different position and has to face a lot of problems and other high ranked heads of the military divisions and making difficult decisions...and they just have not many time.

I loved Hanje in that chapter, I think a lot of ppl don't realise how alone Hanje is in this situation, their situation is even worse than Erwin imo. They have more enemies, less trusting comrades [Levi put his personal feelings 1st and reduce the chances of Humanity surviving...

she is being unreasonable, but i think it's a realistic portrayal of how someone would behave after going through so much like idk why people are acting like her behaviour is unfounded. like im not sayin hanji acted reasonsably, she didnt like she shouldve tried reasoning with eren instead but she obviously got frustrated because of the absolute shit everyones going through right now

From how she behaved during the actual serum bowl (tm) I think it's safe to say Hanji is a very empathetic, understanding and mature person. The problem right now is she doesn't know what Eren is going through and why he is behaving weirdly at this moment,in addition to being frustrated and not being able to understand Levi's decision.

I'm huffy about the Hanji hate... she's so stressed and grieving, people need to cut her some slack

Isayama did good! Despite all our theories, it appears that Ymir was an ordinary girl who was given an extraordinary name. 84.5% of respondents were satisfied with her backstory.

That said, many people think there’s more to the story. Don’t rule out those mystical ties just yet!

Well i know the People of Ymir share weird connections that even surpasses time... That Ymir's dancing titan looked hella like the Devil that gave Ymir Fritz powers.

I'm still expecting more to be revealed. Her past hasn't completely been showed to us and I still believe she's somehow connected to THE Ymir.

About 2/3 of the fandom agree that Ymir is too important for an offscreen death. Big thumbs up from me on this one! For those who think she’s dead, they are side-eyeing the Quadrupedal Titan.

Okay so im looking into buying a motorcycle this summer. Ill be turning 18, and have always wanted a bike. So i was looking at how much insurance would cost me for it because i hear that its expensive and im a full time student and work minimum wage job, so its not like i have money just to shoot out my *** for fun. I was looking at progressive, because they show instant online quotes so i dont have to actually call in and give my real name and social security # and stuff like that. So i go onto progressive's, and enter all my real info like age and stuff(but lie about my actual address and name and email cause i dont want constant ads and spam). And i got cheaper than expected quotes.....So i put in, 2009 Kawasaki Ninja 250r. Male. Turning 18 in july. Put in that i have motorcycle endorsement and taken safety course(i havent yet, but i will by the time i actually own a bike and have to buy insurance for real). No accidents or tickets. 0 years riding experience(although i ran multiple quotes and noticed price drops by $29 for a 12month policy if youve had even 1 year of riding experience, which is nice). And i got a quote for $285 12month policy. For Bodily Injury & Property Damage 50/100/25. Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury 25/50. $100 deductible on comprehensive for bike(again i ran multiple quotes, and changing the deductible amount on comprehensive only saves a few bucks). $500 deductible for collision(this deductible amount changes your rate incredibly). No other coverage. Got quoted $285...seems kinda cheap to me considering im so young? Not complaining that i save money....just wondering if this sounds normal? Random insurance question, lets say im riding my bike and going at a good speed, say 45+mph. Then fall and completely eat ****. I injure and damage only myself and my bike. Lets say my bike needs some repairs or maybe even replacing, and my leg is broken or something like that. Will any insurance cover any costs since it was my fault to my own personal injury? Ghost Clones

Who cares what some teenager saw in the middle of the night? Grant didn’t believe ghost stories.

So why did those three human-sized crates make him so uneasy?

Grant was just doing his rounds around the ship. Something he must have done a million times. So then… Why was he so jumpy?

He tossed the ball in his hands again. Damn that idiot for telling that stupid ghost story. Who cares what some drunk-off-his-ass, sleep-deprived, overworked teenager saw in the middle of the night?

Grant would bet all the money he was making on this job that the kid would have made out with a poster and said he’d met a mermaid the next morning! Jeez…

So then, why? What had him on-edge?

A rat scurried across the deck in front of him, and he dropped the baseball, nearly jumping out of his shoes. Grant cursed. He needed a drink himself, actually. Blowing on his hands to warm them from the early-autumn air, he grabbed the ball from the floor and headed below for his personal stash.

The corridor dripped and creaked. Grant nodded at Middle-Aged-Malcolm as he passed, then at Shortstack-Steve. Steve gave a rowdy, “Hi, Mister Grant!” from behind him. Grant replied, “Hey, Steve.”

Steve came around a corner ahead of him with a “Heya, Grant!”

Grant froze. He turned. And saw Malcolm going up the stairs to the deck.

Alone.

… Had he already drunk tonight? “Grant?” Steve was giving him a concerned look. “Uh… s’nothin’.”

He shook his head to clear it and continued shambling down the corridor. He REALLY needed that drink if he was this jumpy.

More of his crewmates greeted him in the barracks. He ignored them in favor of his booze. He sat on his bed, setting the ball in its place on his pillow, and popped the cap off the first one he grabbed.

He took a long drink. “Much better,” he mumbled. “Wind ‘as some bite to it tonight, eh?”

Bruce slopped himself onto his bed. Grant grimaced. Bruce was a good guy, but he’d rather the slob had sat on a garbage can first. His bed would be cleaner for it.

“Or maybe tha’ lad’s story ‘as gotten to ya?” Bruce jeered. Grant glared, but didn’t dare make eye-contact. He sipped from his bottle, hoping Bruce wouldn’t notice. He noticed. “Oh-ho! I never thought I’d see the day the Great and Punctual Grant The-Goody-Two-Shoes would be scared by-” “Shut up!” Grant snarled at him.

And he did. “... Hang on. Yer serious?” Grant studied the label of the bottle in his hands. “Haven’t you noticed something… off?” “No’ really, no.” Bruce was looking at him blankly.

Grant sighed. “Just… nevermind.” Taking one last swig, Grant stood and handed the bottle to Bruce. “Ay, before ya leave, I’ve a message from-”

“-What does he want me to do now?” Grant interrupted with a sigh. Sometimes being “The-Goody-Two-Shoes” had its downsides. Like getting extra responsibilities without any extra pay. “Said ‘e wanted ya to check on the new cargo. Thinks we might ‘ave stowaways-”

The hairs on Grant’s neck stood up. ‘Please don’t say it.’

“-Malcolm says ‘e ‘eard voices from insi’e the crates.” Swallowing, Grant just nodded and left.

He cursed all the way to the hold. Oddly, there was a gas mask hanging outside the door. Apparently, the crates held some kind of dangerous something-or-other. The mask was in case it leaked. Or, that’s what the kid had told them. The kid had also said the crates were haunted.

Grant put the mask on anyway. Better safe than sorry, right?

Huh. Looked like Ol’ Middle-Aged was right. He could hear voices coming from inside. Looking in the window, he thought he could see a figure standing above each crate. They were blurry -- someone hadn’t cleaned the window properly, huh? He’d find out who it was and chew them out later. Bracing himself -- ‘Just some drunk teenager’s story!’ -- and with a few last curses for good measure, he slammed the door open.

“Oy! What do you lot think you’re doing, huh?!” They turned their heads in his direction. There was something off… They were still blurry?

‘... Must be the mask, then.’ Cursing the gas mask for not letting him see their faces clearly, he stomped over. “Stowaways ain’t… t-tolerated… on…”

He’d gotten close enough that they weren’t blurry anymore. He could see their faces. Or rather, face. For some reason, they looked familiar. And- they all looked the same. The same height. The same clothes. The only difference between them -- was one didn’t have hands, one didn’t have a nose… and one didn’t have a mouth.

And… They were all children. They hadn’t been standing above the crates. They were standing ON them.

That was that, then. He was drunk. He had to be.

Then one of them -- the one without hands -- spoke. “Father…?” His voice sent chills down Grant’s spine. For some reason, the way it echoed emptily -- it reminded him of a hospital.

He and the three strange boys stared at each other for a few seconds. In which time, Grant couldn’t make himself move. But he noticed something he definitely should have sooner. The boys were see-through.

Then- the expressions on the boys’ faces changed. Their eyes glowed red, their fingers became clawlike, and- -was the room shaking?!

A drawn-out howl broke Grant out of his shock. “FAAATHEEERRR!!!”

He ran.

Where had everyone else gone? No one stopped him from sprinting for the outside. For some reason, he felt like that was the only way to be free of them. But they blocked every attempt he made. He ran down every hallway, up every staircase, but every time was met by a pair of red eyes.

He was cornered. No options left, he ran inside the barracks. He tried to hide under the closest bed -- his bed -- but too late. They were already here. Walking toward him, blocking any escape. No weapons near him -- what would even work against a ghost?!

“WHY?!” They spoke in unison. Gone was the empty echo. They sounded like thunder. “WHY?! FATHER! WHY?!”

He couldn’t breath. They were getting closer, trapping him.

And he couldn’t breath! He ripped off the mask.

The boys froze. Everything froze. Nothing moved -- not him, not the ghosts (ghosts!), not the air. There was no sound of dripping or creaking. Even the waves were silent.

Then-

“Hang on,” the boy with no hands -- the leader? He was in the middle -- turned to the one with no nose, “Does he look different to you?” No Nose nodded. No Mouth was squinting at Grant.

No Hands walked up to where Grant was crouched. He stared at him a bit longer -- then started laughing. “Ha! Oh my -- I’m so sorry, Mister Grant!” He turned to the other two, “It’s okay, it’s not him!”

No Hands crouched and held out an arm -- was he trying to help him up? -- and said cheerfully, “Sorry! We thought you were someone else, heh!”

Grant didn’t grab it.

After a few seconds, No Hands stood up straight. He glanced around awkwardly, then paused. And smiled.

“Cool!” No Hands pointed an arm at something. “Hey, do you mind if we borrow that?” Grant cautiously turned his head to see what he was pointing at. It was the baseball on Grant’s pillow.

Grant looked back at the boys. All three of them no longer looked like they were going to kill him and devour his corpse. They just… looked like three excited little boys. Three excited, see-through little boys. Slowly, Grant nodded.

“Awesome!” No Nose shouted. No Hands ran over to the bed -- and lifted the ball. With no hands. It just- floated in front of his arm. Where his hand would be. But wasn’t.

“We’ll bring it back before we leave! Promise!” And like that, they ran out of the room.

Through the wall.

… Yep. He was definitely drunk. Had to be.

After all, he’d just realized why they looked familiar. All three of those boys… They looked just like that teenager- -who’d told them the ghost story to begin with… And who’d told them to wear that gas mask…

… Oh.

So that was why he’d been so jumpy.
