Durand Jones & The Indications Share 5 Tips for Spreading Love in ‘American Love Call’ Album

With our current nationwide tensions, it’s about time America figures out how to spread love and avoid hate, and Durand Jones & The Indications is doing just that with their outstanding new album, American Love Call. Durand Jones & The Indications is a soul/R&B group from Bloomington, Indiana, but their profound sounds are adored by listeners worldwide. Recorded at Brooklyn’s Studio G, Durand Jones & The Indications’ sophomore LP draws attention to their developed songwriting and intricate instrumentals reminiscent of ‘70s soul. With melodic songs about all types of love (“What I Know About You” focuses on platonic love and “Sea Gets Hotter” hones in on undying passion), American Love Call is Durand Jones & The Indications’ call to action for human beings to embody love in every aspect of life.
Speaking on American Love Call, drummer Aaron Frazer shared:
“We’re in a time when so many in this country romanticize the past -- wishing to return to a place of simplicity and former glory. But the reality of our history can be disillusioning. For so many in America, the past represents violence, oppression, fear, and colonialism. As America grows more diverse, we have the opportunity to form the strong, interwoven tapestry that we’ve long claimed. When we find a way to unite across our various movements and see the commonalities of our struggles, we can begin to push forward together. We can begin to see the threads connecting our goals as disparate rallying cries blend into a single song. An ‘American Love Call.’”

Below, you’ll find Durand Jones & The Indications’ five tips for spreading love in modern-day America:
Life isn’t always fair, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t love.
Addressing stark contrasts between the living conditions across America, “Morning in America” channels Durand Jones & The Indications’ relentlessness and brutal honesty when it comes to pressing matters. Touching on the luxurious upper class through playful lyrics, “Congressmen in Washington / Receive their brief n’ brew,” and immediately toning it down to, “While lead it fills the pipe lines / In a Detroit county school,” Durand Jones & The Indications is endlessly blunt with their opinions. Although they truly call out modern day America’s bullshit, Durand Jones & The Indications also suggests that we have the ability to rally together if we ignore our seemingly irrelevant differences: “And in towns across the country / It’s color that divides / When in working men and ladies / We could find our common side.” With Durand Jones & The Indications’ optimistic mindset, our divided world just might have a likely shot at growth and progression amongst all of the tragedies we face.
youtube
Love is so worth the pain.
Have your ever been so consumed by someone’s pure beauty and found yourself in a constant cycle of overwhelming emotions? The talented guys of Durand Jones & The Indications definitely have, so they devoted a captivating song to this unexplainable feeling. “Circles” is a proclamation of unrequited love, interestingly opening with the enchanting chorus: “Got me goin’ in circles / Got me goin’ in circles around you.” After a stage of desperation and complete lust, a simple lyric in second verse speaks volumes: “It drives me crazy that / You treat my love like a game.” Many of us have dealt with unreciprocated feelings, but we continue to pursue romantic relationships with certain people, knowing that they may end up breaking our hearts.
youtube
Love is patient, love is kind.
Another strings-infused track on American Love Call, “True Love” rewards those who are willing to be patient when it comes to love. Durand Jones & The Indications demonstrates incredible vulnerability in the sweet lyric, “Can’t sugarcoat it / I’m devoted to the notion of me and you,” as they discuss the questionable potential of a nonexistent connection. They’re persistent with this concept of patience throughout the entire song, as they sing, “So I’m waiting on you girl / Come and find me.”
youtube
Trust people with your heart and ask that they do the same.
Durand Jones & The Indications understands that human beings are naturally curious creatures and we’re bound to seek the unknown possibilities. In regards to the relationship narrative of “How Can I Be Sure,” they assure us that at one point a strong love connection existed, but now that distance is thrown into the mix, things have gotten fairly complicated. A moment of realization is showcased by the candid lyric, “I used to think our love was reason enough to stay / That was all before,” during which a serious reevaluation of commitment is explored. “How Can I Be Sure” desperately begs us to be honest with ourselves and our partners about our changing emotions to avoid hurting one another.
youtube
Know when your heart deserves better.
The clever chorus of “Too Many Tears” says it all: “One lonely heartbreak / Too many tears / Three makes a heart ache / For all these years.” This witty wordplay makes the liberating message of this song that much more memorable as Durand Jones & The Indications stresses the importance of knowing our self-worth. Dealing with someone who apparently can’t treat their significant other with the respect they deserve, they hit us with the straightforward lyric, “Just look in the mirror and love yourself / So goodbye.” Trailing off with “too many tears” and calming acoustics, Durand Jones & The Indications refuses to admit defeat by leaving the toxic situation on their own terms.

🎸 New music video is up! First live concert footage since before COVID. This new song, inspired and inflected by #ElliottSmith & @reginaspektor, and the book by James C. Scott, tells the story of my middle school #bully, now in prison for murder, as a lens through which to understand the conflict between institutions and individuals and the inevitable tragedy of value capture (as discussed in #FutureFossils episode 175). 🎸 It's the first ever live performance so it's super rough, but still worth sharing. Check my stories for the link. Enjoy! 🎸 #LYRICS: I dug your nails in your arm No blood but they left a mark You came to no harm But I still have the scars You hit me first but complained And landed me in suspension Because illegible pains Rarely merit attention And now the lessons endure Although the song doesn't change You're measured or you're ignored An indefensible claim And everyone in between Invisible or unseen We optimize our machines With only what we perceive These #metaphors hide crucial depth But it's our lot to live with it Our #egregores cannot protect The small and large they can't detect When they're #seeinglikeastate They say they squeaky wheel's greased Campaigns get people released But when they're no one around Then that tree don't hit the ground And #history's written by victors And evidence is suppressed Unless it registers Richters Expect it lost like the rest The integers rule common math But reals are far the larger set Your algebra cannot contain The #novelty we generate When you're seeing like a state 🎸 #songwriter #santafemusic #meowwolf #acousticguitar #folksongs #folkmusic #protestsong (at Tumbleroot Brewery and Distillery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CYmS6BprdUy/?utm_medium=tumblr

Well this was an adventure weekend! We tried to go to Kasha-Katuwe but the wait was crazy long so we decided to skip it (and hopefully hit it next weekend). We went to La Cieneguilla and ended up doing a short little hike ... the wrong direction, but finding a sweet cave, and then finally ended up finding the petroglyphs. We went to Tumbleroot and drank an awesome raspberry sour, made a new friend, and played Phase 10. We went to Leaf and Hive and tried their four honeybrews which were delicious. Hit up Camel Rock and Embudo Station, then Blue Heron brewing to round out Saturday. Sunday, we drove to Cabresto Lake and did a short walk around some of it. Drove the LONG way to Red River which was filled with beautiful views. Finished the day off with the Questa Harvest Festival where you write your worries down and then watch them burn. It was fun to be part of the local culture. https://www.instagram.com/p/B3TOgFiAQdt/?igshid=1j4vvgc39kkfs

HOWLING GIANT SPINS TALES OF METAPHYSICAL DREAM WARS ON EPIC STONER-ROCK SAGA, THE SPACE BETWEEN WORLDS
Hailing from a far distant planet, not our own, stoner-rock space lords HOWLING GIANT will make their awaited return to Earth for an epic tale of metaphysical dream worlds and a crucial battle that could unravel space and time as we know it. The trio of outsiders will release the next chapter of their celebrated career, The Space Between Worlds, on September 27thwith Blues Funeral Recordings. Today, the adventure begins with the debut of “Comet Rider” at DecibelMagazine.com. Fans can pre-order the record now and catch the band on tour this month, including a performance at Psycho Las Vegas on Thursday, August 15th.
Commenting on the new song, guitarist/vocalist Tom Polzine says, “” Comet Rider” was the first song we wrote for this album. The overarching concept of The Space Between Worlds explores the idea that when we dream, we are in fact creating worlds that are just as tangible and legitimate as the waking world we live in. “Comet Rider” focuses on the main character of our concept, who has the ability to access and manipulate all dreams via a nexus point within her own dream world.”
HOWLING GIANT blast forth a cosmic convergence of pulpy sci-fi themes and blistering psych-metal. Across numerous tours and festival appearances, three EPs and their first full album, the trio harness heavily nuanced progressive riff-rock complemented by otherworldly storytelling and the enduring message that the universe in which we live could stand to loosen up. They deliver this message from stages far and wide as often as possible.
The Space Between Worlds is a concept album that follows the story of a huntress who travels the infinite metaphysical worlds brought into being by the dreams of humankind. In these realms, she encounters a dream eater which threatens to unravel the fabric of reality by devouring dreamers and destroying the dimensional gateways.
Made up of Tom Polzine (guitar/vocals) and Zach Wheeler (drums/vocals) with the recent addition of Sebastian Baltes (bass/vocals), the band has expanded their already impressive vocal harmony approach with the addition of a third voice. Friend of the band Drew Harakal adds extra sonic textures to the album with his organ and synth skills. And Jason Shi of ASG appears with a guest vocal cameo on the track “Ice Castle.”
Highlighting the band’s tremendous musical prowess and versatility, The Space Between Worlds is a warp trail of heavy rock and roll so weird it can only be called progressive, giving space to every sonic weapon in the band’s arsenal, and all bound by the album’s central concept and the members’ towering musicianship.

Ginger Root’s Aggressive Elevator Soul Makes for Great “Weather” [PREMIERE + Q&A]

Have you ever heard of a musical sound dubbed “aggressive elevator soul?” Well, Ginger Root is exactly that. Cameron Lew, the multitalented mastermind behind the alternative soul project, prides himself on being fully hands-on with all aspects of Ginger Root, as he does everything from writing the music to editing the music videos. Blending together the charismatic nature of Toro y Moi and the intricate instrumentals of Vulfpeck, Ginger Root is breaking into the music world one irresistible single at a time.
A cheery tune drenched with upbeat electronics, “Weather” takes us back to the sonic soundscapes of America’s 70s disco scene while introducing a modern take to the growing bedroom pop genre. The upbeat song’s refreshingly organic sound complements its lyricism, which has Lew acknowledging both his good and bad moments. Recognizing that there’s a similarity between day to day weather and ever changing situations, “Weather” is message for all of us to not be so critical of ourselves and appreciate the circumstances we’re given.
The accompanying music video for “Weather” has a vintage vibe that pays homage to Ed Sullivan’s iconic television personality as the visual incorporates a retro television with Lew as the lively host of every channel. Family ties are so important to Lew that even his adorable grandparents star in this entertaining project that sees them channel surfing until they settle on a Ginger Root performance that features their grandson as the handsome front man.
On “Weather,” Ginger Root exclusively shared with us,
“The song comes from a place of me accepting the fact that I go through mental fogs and blockades from time to time. And acknowledging that these times come and go just like the day to day ‘Weather.’”
Ones To Watch has your first look at the “Weather” music video below:
youtube
To celebrate Ginger Root’s new music, we recently chatted with Cameron Lew about his self-dubbed “aggressive elevator soul,” his upcoming US tour, and of course, “Weather.”
OTW: You’ve labeled your music as “aggressive elevator soul,” which is absolutely hilarious. What inspires your DIY sound?
CL: Ginger Root’s sound definitely has one foot in what’s going on in the ever-evolving bedroom pop scene, but also another foot in the days of 60s/70s soul. And maybe one more foot in 80s Japanese City Pop? A friend described the music as also being “Nü Motown” to me, which I loved and see fitting. I also am a fan of power pop and French 60s pop, which might slip into the music from time to time. I record and mix everything in my room so I’ve embraced cranking up the “home studio vibe” dial in the production of the music.
OTW: Something that makes Ginger Root especially unique is that you're the mastermind behind literally everything -- from writing the music to editing the music videos. Why is this so important to you?
CL: I think the variety that comes with fronting so many different aspects, keeps me thinking on my feet about new ideas and new approaches to what makes Ginger Root Ginger Root. I feel like I always need to be making something too, so if I’m stuck on a song, I’ll make a video! If I forget to charge the camera, I’ll finish a t-shirt design! But all in all, I find something fun about all the different hats I get to wear.

OTW: The "Weather" music video has such a fun, vintage vibe to it. What was the process like for this entertaining project?
CL: Like previous Ginger Root music videos, everything came together like a week before we shot it, haha. The first iteration of the idea was solely supposed to be the band performance/Ed Sullivan-esque scene with a huge studio audience. Almost soul train-like. But to find a place to let us shoot something like that was tough. So then I thought of scaling it down and including channel surfing with different shows starring different people. But being that would be a logistical nightmare with the little time we had to shoot it, I thought, “Why don’t I just be in all the shows?” So I went shopping at flea markets and thrift stores for all the outfits. Ashley Kron (friend and hot glue master) and I cut an obscene amount of cardboard for the band performance scene. Seriously, you should see what she can do with a box cutter and a hot glue gun. Tehillah De Castro (friend and camera wizard) has shot three music videos with me previously so no need for a shot list. She can read my mind about that. This new reworked idea also allowed me to feature my grandparents in the video. I’m glad they were good sports about it.
OTW: Another one of your upcoming songs, "Slump" warns us of the dangers of complacency. What made you want to write this song?
CL: In the past, I’ve known people that would always dwell on theoretical failures. Chances they never took because they were too caught up with having it backfire or not work out. And being around those people would often make me second guess some of the roads I wanted to try and take (career wise, music wise, life wise, etc.). And so “Slump” is a letter of sorts telling them, “It’s fine for you to be scared of those hypothetical situations, but that’s not going to stop me from moving forward.”

OTW: Who came up with the idea of exclusive Ginger Root air fresheners and sticker sheets with pre-orders of “Weather?”
CL: The sticker sheet was a stolen idea/nod to Japanese Breakfast. She had them for sale when she toured Psychopomp and I thought it was so cool and fun. I came up with the air fresheners half as a joke to Dan at Acrophase Records and he actually came back and found a website that made custom ones. Sadly, no one does a ginger scented air freshener, so we settled on pine, haha.
OTW: What are you most excited for in regards to your upcoming US tour?
CL: I’m most excited for what we have in store for our set. As an opener, it’s hard/almost impossible to try new things out on stage because you feel like, or at least I feel like, I’m trying to get people to not head back to the bar or look at their phones the entirety of our set. It’ll be interesting to see if anyone shows up to these shows. But playing to ten people who came to see Ginger Root would be a lot more fun than playing to 100 people who talk over you and spill beer on your merch.

OTW: If you could collaborate with anyone in the music industry, who would it be?
CL: Oh man, hmm… I’d love to work on something with Feist, James Petralli from White Denim, Joseph Mount from Metronomy, Ben Folds, or Chaz from Toro y Moi.
OTW: Who are your Ones To Watch?
CL: Stella Donnelly, Steady Holiday, CHAI, XinXin, and Mamalarky (who’s touring with us)!
