@antique-symbolism​ OKAY I’m gonna try for brevity cause I’m inclined to ramble and there’s A Lot going on in this campaign but BASICALLY--

Melliwyk’s campaign setting is an isolated cluster of floating islands, and our party was exploring the lost mainland below, a journey from which no one in history had ever returned before. When we eventually DID return we were ambushed by guards and declared insurrectionists and just barely escaped being arrested; long story short it turns out the government had been covering up or lying about a lot of fucked up stuff that we've been uncovering and working to fix, so, now we’re Public Enemy Number One on the islands under propaganda’d false charges and definitely on the top of the govt’s shit list

Anyway, pretty shortly after just barely defeating an archmage sent to capture and/or murder all of us, our bard cast sending to just say hi and check in with his mom and got back a bunch of gibberish, having been Feebleminded-- when he sent an angry message to our BBEG demanding she fix his mom Or Else, the response was something like ‘if you keep acting out my hands are tied. Tell Melliwyk her parents say hello’ WHICH UM. YOU KNOW. NOT GREAT,,,

Melliwyk doesn’t know Sending (to her INCREASING frustration) and our bard has never met her parents, so, that was the only context we had about what was going on with them for quite awhile. Aside from Quinton’s mom getting magically lobotomized, we also found out not very long afterwards that Zhartook’s entire home island had been set on fire. Frankly, the fact that Mel’s family were the only ones who hadn’t been hurt yet was incredibly stressful for her; for the others the damage had already been done, but for her, there was just this looming threat that her parents could be hurt or killed to punish her for the party’s actions.

The whole situation has been complicated by the fact that, since our attempted arrest, Mel had intentionally avoided any and all contact with her parents, hoping this would protect them-- so not only were her parents being held by the bad guys as a not-so-subtle threat to Melliwyk, they were also completely unaware that those even were the bad guys because they were, like everyone else in the country, completely in the dark about all the conspiracies and stuff we’d uncovered. Without being able to contact them, Mel had no way of knowing what they were being led to believe about her and the party while at the palace, and no way of warning them that they were actually in danger. We’d already called in a favor to launch a rescue by the time we found out that her mom had been given a legitimate job helping hunt down resistance members, but at the time we didn’t know yet whether the rescue had been successful, so learning that they had some actual Use to the bad guys that didn’t involve terrible things happening to them was an incredible relief ^^;;
