Hazard (+ bonus Thalia) and Frill!
Thank you @underlandchronicleszine and @king-of-the-oreo for your suggestions, had a blast painting them!!
Couldn't really decide on the colors for Frill, therefore the two slightly different versions. Love the implication that in addition to the enlarged size of the underland animals another mutation took place (Frill's coloring.. as far as i remember "real" Chlamydosaurus kingii tend to be more earth-toned. Didn't research it further though so i might spill some misinformation)
Definitely want to paint her in full action someday, running on her hind legs and displaying the frill in all it's glory! Would do so in an instant if i had the time and energy to really work out the scales instead of just smashing some texture brush over large areas and leaving it at that.
Also- Hazard got that hobbit hair. :") tried to change it several times but this was the best i could come up with at the moment lol. Am actively trying to get better at drawing children, something i never really worked on until now.
Sorry for rambling. :")
Hope you like it!! Still taking suggestions since i already plan to enlarge this challenge by at least one additional slot (will work on Pandora, Dulcet and Boots as time allows)
EDIT I posted the wrong version with the heading on a layer under thalia's head. Will replace it as soon as i remember and my tablet complies.
#the underland chronicles#twitchtip#tuc lizzie#tuc hazard#tuc thalia#tuc frill#tuc fanart#still thinking about a solution for the size comparison between lizzie and twitchtip since i'm not entirely happy atm

@quohotos is that who i think it is?
In 2017 I got my own pen digitizer tablet thing (what the fuck are these called?). It wasn't until recently that I really got comfortable using it after taking all my notes in onenote with it. Just handwriting (and doodling when I eventually goofed off) did so much to make me feel confident drawing, more than the years and years of using it sporadically up till that point. Just doing silly little doodles is such a good way to train up your art, you don't have to only make masterpieces.
Oh, and here are some of those doodles
And it's not just the doodles that help, taking sketches for notes still helps develop the skills
Even little things help!^
But there's still room for ambitious things as well^
And cute things^
pretty things
ugly things
random things
Anatomically inaccurate things^
Oh yeah I've been posting these in reverse chronological order, so you saw the more practice stuff first and the less practice stuff after

I finished Gregor and the Marks of Secret last night and...um...Suzanne. How did you write that nibbler gas poisoning scene for CHILDREN? Like I thought THG was dark but that scene alone is SO much darker than the book series based on child murder games and the subsequent war around it. A bunch of kids, ranging from three years old to sixteen, watch an actual genocide take place.
I've read/watched so many "hero's story" before. Seen so many heroes take up the mantle of "the chosen one" but at the end of the book when Gregor takes up Sandwich's sword it just hits different. Because of the huge losses with that gas poisoning as well as Thalia's death. Because it isn't his responsibility really. He's an Overlander. The Underland doesn't even affect his world so he truly could walk away from it. And he's so, so broken by it already. He could lose his family, his life, to help them. But he's made bonds with the people in the Underland and he can't walk away, so he stays to fight. Yet it's not triumphant either, it's not the glory of being a hero. It's weary, it's sad, it should be so unnecessary for a twelve-year-old kid to stop a species from being eradicated by violence and hatred.
#tuc#tuc20#the underland chronicles#gregor and the marks of secret#tuc spoilers#i thought the kids would be safe at least#BUT NO you kill off thalia#and hazard has lost practically everyone he's been attached to#i think killing off boots would be too much even for suzanne#but i still get sick every time she is in danger#me volunteering to go down to the underland to give these kids therapy#because they're going to have so many issues

was thinking today abt how luxa and ripred somehow BOND at the end of code of claw and somehow no one,,,, ever,,,, questions it? cause it just creates more questions that literally never ever get answered within the book?
isnt luxa already bonded to aurora? can you bond with more than one person then? what even is the significance of a bond then?
aurora is apparently okay with this but,,, it does not make that much sense really. also, "if you think so, then i can survive it" (luxa to aurora, a little after the bond is made),,, that's. not very,,,,, bondlike or any good prospects for luxa and ripred's bond unless luxa is being sarcastic but i doubt that?
all throughout the series, bonds have always been between humans and fliers. this does make sense because a human and flier duo is pretty great for fighting and survival + travel within the underland, they complement each other. i don't think a human could have that with any other species. (idk how to articulate but like, fliers provide the Flight and humans provide the Attack yk, there's not much a gnawer can provide to a human in that regard if you get what i mean)
also, bonds are sought with someone who have a connection or understanding with. someone whose loss you would actively grieve. luxa and aurora, howard and pandora, hazard and thalia (😭), and so on. i mean,,, a bond is clearly a significant concept within the underland, the breaking of which is literally disastrous (ares being punished with exile before gregor saves the day). if i'm not forgetting anything, the only time a bond breaks is either a betrayal (henry and ares!!! they are a great example of how bond ≠ peace), or your bond dying (howard and pandora).
observing luxa and ripred's dynamic, they do not quite have the understanding that creates a successful bond (Luxa Was Literally Ready To Send Ripred And The Gnawers To The Uncharted Lands, HOW DID THEY BOND™️ LIKE 2 SECONDS LATER??? I reread that part just now and I lost several braincells, just to confirm if I was right. Anyway). i just. don't see how luxa could say that treaties have failed,,,, a bond can fail too?
especially considering how badly henry's betrayal affected luxa throughout the series, it just feels,,,, Not Right to see luxa doing this when henry's bond with ares failed? like, would she not have considered this before placing so much faith in a bond between her and ripred?
unless there is actual magic involved, nothing really guarantees that luxa and ripred's bond will preserve peace or anything. bonds in tuc seem to be more of a cultural/interpersonal tradition of high significance as opposed to an actual magical construct with any weight that ISN'T assigned by cultural/personal association.
i read more of that part just to check and this quote? "I need one human to genuinely approve of what I just did." (said by luxa)
THE WAY THIS LOOKS,,, THIS SOUNDS LIKE A VERY BAD MOVE FOR UM. YOUR "image"???? How could you make such a huge move without even consulting anyone properly, right ? Luxa, bonding with A GNAWER who you Threatened with Exile/Banishment does NOT bode well for your reputation, which you need if you are going to actually want to preserve any peace? Bro you could've just signed a treaty,,,,,,,
and i mean, if you CAN bond (bonds are one of the most,, iconic? idk what other word to use, features of tuc, just to put that here) with other species instead of just humans and fliers, i feel like that's not something you would ever just put at the end of the book and never really explore in depth,,,
anyway i feel like i missed something but like,,,, THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE QUESTIONING ON THE LUXA AND RIPRED BOND BECAUSE IT'S SO OUT OF NOWHERE,, and detracts from a proper understanding of what a bond even is
im pretty sure this is my first proper uh essay??? post on here so um lmk what u think, id love to hear all ur thoughts in general and stuff. i will prolly reblog this post if i have more thoughts on this, let's see haha. anyway, have an awesome day/night!

I reread tuc books 3, 4, and half of 5 yesterday on my flights and I don't know what's different thise time around but god the imagery seems so much more vivid. Even after having reread the books dozens of times. Especially in Mark's of Secret cause holy shit. The scenes of the nibbles at the base of the cliff and the volcanoes. Little Thalia. I can see it all so clearly and its so fucked up

aaaaaah I love this concept, just... everything about this. Especially since big'ol'bat'bro ought to have had even just *one* night topside.
On the other wing, however, the process of even getting Ares to the Overland... it's complicated. More so than with most canonically-known fliers, given Ares' above-average size. Ares even outright states he won't fit up the staircase leading to the concealed stone (and even if he could, getting a giant bat up all those stairs... well, it's doable, but there's gonna be a lot of cursin' involved), and if he can't fit there, then the laundry grate is similarly an unlikely surface access point. And that's without factoring in the possibility of others intending to use the laundry room during this process... and then the duo would have to scramble back down lest they're still in the building when Animal Control inevitably arrives on scene.
And then there's the decision of how to go about 'bring your pet cottonball companion bond to school'. > Bring Ares into the building? > Ask him to stay up on the roof and somehow convince the teacher to allow the class out to the yard so Ares can do some kind of dynamic entrance? (Assuming there's even an outdoor space on the complex...) > Open the window to let Ares stick his big fluffy head in?
But, aside from all the above... I still very much love everything about this hypothetical scenario.
imagine it’s bring your pet to school day and gregor shows up with ares.

I’m re-reading my favourite books and survived the tragic scene with that little bat here (still crying by the way). Her names Thalia.

I know I just read the books but what does Thalia look like? I have my tuc week posts queued but I’m not as big a fan of my day 5 post as I could be and I might try to do something with Thalia and her enjoying jokes a lot

“my heart is so crowded already,” whispered hazard. “but i’m sure the others will make room for thalia. she is not a very big bat.” for day 5: marks/secret, i bring you thalia, who had arguably one of the emotionally worst deaths of the series. she was just a kid this thalia is even smaller than the other bats i’ve posted: aurora, euripedies, etc, etc
