𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐞
[October 2022]
It's been already 7 months since the first case of an unknown disease attacked the island of Sodor.
It all started at the Brendam Docks. Carly was the first one who showed symptoms, even though no one knew how or when did she got infected, every engine went crazy when they knew about it.
Knowing that the Brendam Docks are a place where many engines go during their jobs. The collective panic was totally understandable. Everyone could be infected!
And it all went worse when they knew about Cranky and Porter being infected too.
Engines were also vulnerable.
Salty was moved again to the quarry to prevent his own infection. (He hated this)
But this decision only spread the disease more and more. Salty already seemed to be a carrier when he was transferred, but he didn't show symptoms until a couple of months later.
And thanks to Mavis infecting Thomas, who appeared to be asymptomatic, within a few days more than a quarter part of Sodor's engines were infected, the railway had been temporally closed, and no one knew what was going on.
Now, at the Steamworks, Victor and Kevin were trying to take care of Charlie, Rosie, Ben and Belle. They started showing symptoms a month ago, and since then, they stayed at the Steamworks with a daily check.
Charlie, even though he was the less healthy one, was still the one who smiled the most. Probably because Kevin stayed with him all day.
Victor told him many times not to do that, because he could get infected. But Kevin didn't seemed to care much for that. He just wanted to make his friend happy during all his suffering.
But one day. Charlie's health got even worse.
A strange red liquid started coming out of his funnel, eyes, nose and mouth, and the only thing he could do was crying and whimpering of pain.
Kevin felt very helpless when he realized that he couldn't do anything to help him. So he decided just to stay with the young steamie.
It looked like all his effort was making Charlie get better. Because in a week, he started feeling good, the bleeding stopped and he started smiling again.
Victor felt very proud of his apprentice, he had no idea what Kevin did. But he was about to ask him to do it with the rest of the engines to heal them.
Until the next morning...
------------------------------------------------------
Kevin woke up and, as usual, ran towards Charlie to greet him. But something was wrong with him that day. As soon as Kevin approached to him and his wheels touched Charlie's, he felt they were cold.
Innocently, Kevin ran inside his shed, grabbed the blanket he always slept with and covered Charlie with it. But he was still cold.
The sound of Kevin's wheels coming and going woke up Victor.
-What are you doing with those blankets Kevin?- Victor asked with a soft sleepy voice.
The young golden crane turned back to him and smiled.
-Charlie needs to be warmed up. I felt his wheels, they were as cold as snow!- he giggled.
The green-eyed engine smiled proudly.
-Aww, that's so nice from you. Go ahead then- He chuckled while going back into his shed.
Kevin, his crew and some of the workers started covering the young violet engine in blankets. Then, Kevin flatted his wheels, laying down next to his friend.
-Don't worry Charlie. You will be better so soon.- He whispered trying not to wake him up.
------------------------------------------------------
A couple of hours later, one of the workers approached to the violet engine, ready to check him.
-Charlie?- He softly patted his siding. This always woke him up. But this time, nothing but silence came from him.
-Hey! I think something's wrong with this one!- The worker called Kevin's crew, Paul and Gunter.
The golden crane also woke up.
-Is Charlie still asleep?- He yawned as he straightened his wheels.
Paul seemed to be in a complete state of shock.
Charlie's driver and fireman were on the verge of tears.
-L-Let's just go get Victor okay buddy?- Gunter stuttered while he got in Kevin's cabin.
-Is Charlie okay? What's going on? I wanna be with him if something happens!- The small crane asked starting to get more and more worried.
His driver practically ignored his questions and ran to call Victor and his crew, leaving Kevin away from his friend.
-Gunter? Hey!! Please come back! Don't leave me here! Please! i wanna be with Charlie!- His jade eyes sparkled full of tears of desesperation. The only thing he could do was to shake forwards and backwards, but as no one was on his cabin, he couldn't go anywhere. Whichwas probably intentional.
Kevin saw in complete confusion how Paul and Gunter talked to eachother...how Charlie's driver cried on his mate's shoulder... how Victor's crew ant the rest of workers shaked Charlie, trying to wake him up...
And Victor... He saw his mentor how he never had seen him before...
His shocked expression... how he wasn't able to move or do anything... Victor seemed to be dissapointed on himself... Mad at himself... Wanting to scream... But wating to cry at the same time...
A mix of horrible emotions he'd never felt before, and wouldn't ever wanted to feel.
Suddenly, they heard one of the workers who was checking the violet engine saying...
-He... He's gone...-
...
The whole place was silent...
Even the other sick engines turned to look at them.... Some in shock... Some in confusion...
-No... No that's impossible!- Victor protested. -Engines don't die! Only being scrapped can kill us!-
«Kill...? Is... Is Charlie... Is he dead...?» Kevin thought before he started sobbing.
-I'm sorry Victor... But it looks like that's what happened...- Victor's fireman softly said. -Charlie's not with us anymore...-
-No! NO! THAT'S NOT TRUE!!!- Kevin cried. -HE'S ALIVE!!! I KNOW IT!!! HE'S JUST ASLEEP!!-
His crew approached to him and tried to calm him down and confort him.
-Sorry buddy... He will be asleep forever now...- Paul sobbed while hugging the young crane.
-We must tell Sir Topham Hatt about this... After this... Every infected engine is in risk of death...- One of the workers whispered, probably to not scare the other engines.
-How... You were perfectly fine yesterday...- Victor whispered, still unable to believe what happened.
-Let's take you back to your shed Victor...- His driver sighed.
------------------------------------------------------
Later that day, Victor saw many engines arriving at the steamworks.
Edward, Philip, Thomas...
The most close ones to Charlie showed up to see him for the last time.
Victor stayed in his shed, staring at the violet engine's corpse the whole morning. Till an old friend surprised him with a visit.
-Oh, hello Victor. I have heard what happened this morning. I am so sorry for that...-
The jade-eyed engine looked up, seeing anything else than a big dark-blue engine. It was Hiro.
-Hello Hiro...- Victor sighed. He wasn't in the best mood to talk at that moment. But he appreciated Hiro too much to tell him to leave him alone.
Hiro flatted his wheels while trying to find a good way to confort his friend.
-Hey... I know you... And i know you are blaming yourself for this... But it is not your fault at all.- Hiro said with a soft tone.
-That's the problem!- Victor exclaimed. -I've done everything good and he died anyway!-
-You did as much as you could. Victor, you were not ready for this. None of us are.- The grey-eyed engine answered.
The garnet engine leaned against the Japanese's side and sobbed.
-He was fine yesterday Hiro... He was laughing... Just like before the infection... And now... We won't hear that laugh never again...- He started.
-I'm supposed to be the one who heals the engines... Not the one who lets them die...- Hiro leaned his head on the smaller engine's forehead, while this one continued talking.
-I've failed Hiro... I've failed at the only job i had to do...- His cracking voice showed he wasn't able to talk anymore. So he just cried silently.
-You have not failed Vic... You did what you could. And you did it fine...- Hiro said while he closed his eyes. Falling asleep just like the garnet engine did as he calmed down...

[1969]
Sir Topham Hatt had recently come into ownership of a new engine. The general opinion on said new engine was nearly unanimous -- and it wasn’t a positive one.
Henry grunted sleepily as the warmth spread through his boiler. He enjoyed having Vicarstown Shed to himself for once. He cracked open an eye, then was fully awake in an instant. Surrounding him, on all sides, were rows upon rows of tankers, all filled with water.
“For god’s sake!!” He roared.
“Okay,” Percy chuffed, “now that’s just silly. I deliver the post - letters, parcels, that sort of thing. My trucks don’t carry weed - that’s what grows between the ballast on unkempt track! My driver told me!”
Percy’s driver scratched his head, and began to explain. The fireman made wild shushing motions, which the driver - rather fortunately - took heed of.
“Aah, finally. Time for a versatile engine like myself to--”
James froze. His spot in the shed was covered from rails to ceiling in bright blue paint. It dripped from the ceiling, coated the walls, and even ran down the window on the one side.
The red engine made a scream not unlike the sound of locked wheels skating on solid rails, and hurtled backwards, quickly deciding to sleep somewhere else - and nearly mowing Edward down in the process.
Gordon stared in baffled fury. His express coaches - his pride and joy - had been defiled. No longer did they bear the iconic red and white; they stood coated in the livery of the railway he despised the most.
“Who… in the name of Sir Nigel Gresley did this?!” He seethed.

Untitled fic number 66?
This one also goes out to @weirdowithaquill!
So, this is for a fic that was meant to be a "day in the life" sort of deal, a sort of spiritual prequel to Ex Condor, but this time it is Edward in 1947.
Although it's an "ordinary day" (at least—it starts as one) there are mounting clues (and Thomas coming right out and saying it) that the engines are anxious about what nationlisation is going to mean for them. (There are rumours that the Fat Director will move to Manchester to become controller of the entire Midland region! Which is actually their best-case scenario, but still a daunting prospect.) It is also helpful to know that this is in the same universe where Topham Hatt and Charlie Sand have some mutual tension that everyone tries to shove under the rug in order to carry on with things.
This scene is technically at/right after the climax of the plot. I still plan to finish and publish the whole fic one of these days but it might be years. In the meantime, we all already knew that FC1 would retain control of the North Western even under nationalisation so how much of a "spoiler" is this? I ask you.
I also ask you to consider that early RWS!Edward — eager, childlike, and wholehearted — is really freakin' cute, and you do not want to wait years to read this.
NO ANGST. ALL CLOVER. GOOD VIBES ONLY.
---
The return had to be the best run of Edward’s life. Clarence hushed him a good few times, when Edward absent-mindedly began to sing; the engine had no idea how the saloon could keep so calm but he did appreciate it, for without being checked he should have shouted the news from the hilltops. The joy throughout the whole train was palpable, and he felt it in his very heat-pipes. At first he didn’t have much steam to spare for self-control or rational thought… though a good eighty or ninety miles in and it all the sudden became easy. His wheels went numb and seemed to pound along of their own accord, his heart was somewhere up in the stars, and he was simply at one with the night.
The journey seemed to merge into eternity, and yet it was all too soon that they approached old Furness territory, came to the bridge, went through the tunnel, encountered the gradual side of their own hill. When they pulled into their own station at quarter to two, Edward felt both exhausted and sure that he could have gone twice as long. It was a wonderful heady rush. Little wonder, that it had taken Gordon two decades to stop regaling them all with reminisces of when he had been run-in on the East Coast Main Line. Edward whistled for first one triumph, and then again for the other. And then again because he was laughing and couldn’t help it.
There had never been such a night as this. It must be a dream. It was all too good to be true.
But controller, assistants, and crew all disembarked, and they were in just as high spirits. The small party in Clarence had evidently had a drink or three to celebrate, and Mr Hatt was remarkably light on his feet.
On the platform, he and Mr Sand accidentally made eye contact, and Mr Sand cracked, ducking his head to partially hide a slow grin. “Well done, sir,” he said, sounding as though the words were being pulled out of him against his will, “congratulations.” And then Mr Hatt smiled too, and somehow everyone collectively burst into deep belly laughs. They all clasped hands and shoulders yet again, as if they needed the touch to be sure everyone else was real. Edward whistled again, sheerly for seeing them so happy, and even Clarence went so far as to eye the noisy little gathering with a certain benevolence.
“Good news, sir?” enquired the stationmaster, emerging from the house, in full uniform and looking harried.
“Does it look bad?” retorted the Fat Controller, all booming merriment. “I cannot announce it tonight. But conjecture, man; conjecture!”
“Very good, sir.” The stationmaster flashed a sincere if baffled smile of his own, but went on soberly: “I beg your pardon, sir, but we need Edward down the branch line; the harbor train still hasn’t been taken; and there’s a gentleman on the phone for you, he’s been calling every hour—”
Every other man present gave a good-natured, even rather chucklesome groan.
“Ahh,” said one of the assistants. “Right back into it.”
“Our carriage is about to turn back into a pumpkin,” sighed the other, amused.
“If it’s Manchester,” the Fat Controller told the stationmaster, “then never mind. I’ve taken care of it. Tell them to read the papers tomorrow.”
“I’m afraid it’s Ulfstead, sir.”
The Fat Controller, still smiling broadly, sighed and ground the palms of his hands against his eyes. “And to think I fought to keep this job. Very well, stationmaster. I will be just a moment. But I must overrule your arrangements for the harbor train. This engine and his crew have earned a rest.”
“We have a relief crew at the ready. But the loaner is still laid up, and Myron was re-routed to the mainland. There are no engines in steam to be had. If not Edward, we’ll have to ask the L.M.S. to take it—”
“Give them a last hurrah,” said Mr Sand flatly. “Makes no odds now. This engine is off-duty.”
“No, indeed,” protested Edward, only a little breathless. “I’m up for it! That train’s none too heavy nor fast. The L.M.S., indeed!”
Mr Sand chuckled a bit, but shook his head and sounded firm. “I know you’re flying high now. But you’re going to feel this, tomorrow.”
“I’m sorry to contradict, driver, but that just is what it is. We can’t pass off that train, tonight of all nights.” Edward whistled without even realizing it. “The L.M.S.! To-night!”
Everyone except the stationmaster, knowing well the source of this indignation, simply had to laugh for sheer pride all over again.
“Ahem!” the Fat Controller coughed pointedly, “I believe I am the one who makes these decisions. In fact I have a little piece of paper here that says so…”
This time even the stationmaster genuinely smiled. The outcome of Mr Hatt’s emergency meeting was becoming more and more obvious each passing minute.
The Fat Controller, chuckling at his own joke and his own victory, held his watch up to the lamplight, and then carefully pocketed it. “Stationmaster, tell his lordship I have just arrived and will call him back on the hour. I trust I may use your phone, and, in the meantime, my men will fill you in. We won’t say no to a little hospitality, either. Driver, Edward will take the harbor train. I assure you that I shall have his morning timetable covered so that he may have a lie-in. If you insist that only you can prepare him properly I am sure the relief won’t argue with you. And Edward—” He turned around, and added with great seriousness. “Thank you.”
Edward blushed. It was plain that his controller was referring to more than taking on the harbor job. It was even a great deal more than simply the ride he had been given that evening.
It encompassed all the thirty-odd years of reasons that the Fat Controller had not wanted Myron to be the engine to take him, not on this occasion, and Edward was warmed through, deeply touched. “My pleasure, sir.”
After the Fat Controller spoke another few low words to Clarence, Edward took him away to the carriage shed. Clarence yawned a little, once they were out of sight and earshot of the lit station. Perhaps the strange comment about turning into a pumpkin had shaken him out of his usual reserve.
“That was probably the last important turn of duty I shall I ever have,” he mused aloud, as he was shunted into place under shelter.
“Nonsense,” said Edward. “You’re wanted quite often, and there’s no new saloon coming.”
“I said important turn of duty. I know I shall take the directors and their wives to many another picnic or club, and you will never hear me murmur a word against it. But that was the last of the backroom deals where history is written that I shall ever host.”
“The last, and the greatest, I suppose?”
“I did not say that.” Clarence sighed his eyes closed, but he was smiling a little too, well-satisfied with himself. “But this much I suppose I may say. It has been a fine life, collecting secrets.”
“And never telling them,” Edward said… a little too gravely.
Clarence, being no fool, opened one sleepy eye.
“You’re just a locomotive. You wouldn’t understand.”

Billy and his brother Charlie are widely considered to be "two of the worst characters in RWS/T&F history.", so do they appear in this universe? If so, how are they written to make them more likeable and sympathetic?
Hi! Of course, I basically have all the characters from the rws,tv series and magazines and that includes Billy and Charlie. I’ve basically rewritten their entire characters like since there were two of their class basis used in the Wellsworth & Suddery Railway so they used to be part of the line. (Key word: used, they barely stayed there for like, a year before they bounced around and gone their separate ways.) They also both girls now cause we need more girl locomotives, Charlie short for Charlotte (Charlie is trans feminine 🏳️⚧️ ) while Billie is short for Sybil, after the death of their eldest sister, Wilhelmina “Wilma” both decided to leave as Billie was lashing out of grief.
Charlie (short for Charlotte) is now the circus private engine (from Henry and the elephant) and the ringmaster is Derek “Lowham” Hatt, she/her Charlie y’all, she wasn’t in the railway for long so she has trouble trying to get into regular service whenever she visits as she lived in the mainland now, often preferring to crack jokes to the trucks or chat with the performers who took excellent care of her. Charlie isn’t great at problem solving but what she is good at making others smile with jokes or witty comments when they’re stressed or down especially to Lowham who always appreciated her trying to make others happy and laugh.
Charlotte “Charlie” prefers the company of humans to engines of she’s secretly being honestly she does have more human friends than sentient machine friends (Mr. Giggles was her driver after all) After all she was raised in a circus and she does performances at local comedy clubs she often joins in the games like poker and giving out funny banter So far the closest sentient machines she gets along with and calls her friends are tiger moth and ace, they’re all co-owned by Lowham Hatt and his husband Mr. Harry Topper.
They all get along swell much to everyone’s else horror. Charlie and Ace love placing bets on one another Charlie encourages her brothers rather daredevil behavior (she and Tiger Moth are workshopping a theme song) and she’s a delight to be another the life of a party granted she can be super talkative and hasn’t been on a railway for long and tends to have troubling focusing and concentration forgetfulness as well (adhd go go brr)
Meanwhile Billie (yes it’s from Billie speaks the talking cat) she’s like izutsumi from dungeon mesho she scares people. Billy was originally the #1 of the W&S but that number was immediately given to Colin thanks to her “feline” attitude she tends to dump the jobs she doesn’t want on Colin taking advantage of Colin’s naivety and biting off more than he can chew. She didn’t care of loosing her number despite her tuberculous relationship with a majority of the W&S she cares for marcille (an W&S Oc) she’s sees her as a mom.
Cause wow the amount of fights she got with the farmhand’s dogs are ridiculous Then seagulls after she was moved (she left by herself) to fight over fish in the harbors Henry fears her. Heck Billy terrifies the strike trio poor Henry fears her watching him as she shunts the kipper she stares at the vans a bit too closely much to their fear that they begged someone else to shunt. Though she befriended every stray cat,she tends to invite them into her shed and just chills with them often seen having conversations with them. She basically now works at Mr. Jolly’s Chocolate Factory with Pug/Pidge.

[1968]
Most engines on the Fat Controller’s railway get along fairly well in spite of their differences. Most times, they’re able to put any issues they may have with one another aside and work towards a common goal. “Most engines” does not, unfortunately, include Murdoch and Bear.
“FIFTEEN MINUTES!!” Bear roared. “You held me up for fifteen minutes! And who do you suppose caught the blame for those seven milk tankers having gone off?”
“And what would you have had me do?” Murdoch retorted. “There were live sheep on the line, I couldn’t just move forward, I might have run some over!”
“Perhaps blown your whistle? What do you have it for, if not to make your presence known - as you seem to love to do."
“If I had blown my whistle,” Murdoch seethed through clenched teeth, “it would have only made them panic. Believe me, I would have loved to have blown smoke and forced them to move, but that simply wasn’t an option!”
A small group of engines watched the shouting match unfold, with mostly unanimous responses.
“What’re they arguing about tonight?” Charlie asked as she pulled in.
“Bear’s blaming Murdoch for delaying his train, and Murdoch’s blaming sheep.” Molly sighed, bedraggled as though she hadn’t slept for weeks. “Or… something.”
“And just last week, Murdoch was accusing Bear of leaving oil on the main line. And you know Bear took that one personally.” Almond added. He knew Charlie was keeping score of these things.
“So that’s five arguments incited by Murdoch, and three incited by Bear this month.” Charlie murmured.
“…”
“We’re a little over halfway through the month.” Molly sighed.
“I need a drink.” Almond groaned.
Rebecca pulled in a moment later. She made to take on water just outside the shed, but when she heard the raised voices, and Murdoch caught her glance and sent a glare her way, the big yellow engine quickly decided that the tower near Tidmouth Sheds would be a far better choice.

So, one of the W&S engines bit the dust when James arrived? What else can we know about them? Are any still kicking?
(houseboat sent in another ask apologizing for forgetting my W&S gang, but that's okay, because I don't necessarily consider characters I made up for storytelling purposes "canon"! this ask was in response to that post about early RWS headcanons, where I call it "headcanons" but honestly I'm really trying to wrestle with actual canon and make it "make sense")
So even in my most self-indulgent, escapist headcanon, the W. & S. four in my fics are all now scrapped. It was a their-choice, death-with-dignity sort of thing. They had never been super-impressed with the future (also, this was before the N.W.R.'s maintenance budget became the massive financial marvel that it would later become, and being alive—much less steaming up and working!—had come to bloody hurt). #4 went on quite some while, reluctant to make a decision; she was still in storage even when BoCo first arrived (Edward would shunt her outside for sunlight and company every fine day because you know he did). But, frankly, she was very lonely by then. James's brief tenure on the line offered her and her dirty-old-lady instincts a welcome second wind, but even if he had stayed, she would have drooped again; she never could get over missing the other three. She was finally serene on the day she "departed." (She roped Myron into being with her to watch the sun set over the harbor. Yes, if you're wondering, he was indeed always pretty terrified of her.)
However, my OCs kind of blew by that whole perscription of they were all 0-6-0Ts, which is almost the only thing the Awdrys ever gave us about them. And, unlike you ;) I rather enjoy trying to stay within the parameters of canon.
So I treat my own OCs as non-canonical.
But 0-6-0Ts, huh. The oft-kicked-about idea of Billy and Charlie having been W. & S. engines is so cursed and I can't get rid of it, fml. In fact, in that HC post, I had been this close to putting in that the "early" stories that Thomas and Edward contributed to the Thin Clergyman's collection (which he never published, due to the board thinking they were Not Very On Brand) were later adapted by the TVS writers into "Don't Be Silly, Billy" and "Charlie and Eddie."
Well, not adapted. Loosely inspired by.
William had been the old station pilot at Wellsworth; at one point (one point—never again!) he was sent to Vicarstown teach Thomas the ropes, and ol' Billy just wouldn't admit that he didn't know the first damn thing without having the old stationmaster around to micromanage him. Thomas soon sort of... figured it out, though. It became... obvious. Thomas did ignore the warning signs, however, when they were given a chance to double-head a goods train. It was Thomas's dream in life! He kept his mouth shut and got on that train! Even when William scoffed at the idea that they had to top off first! Whatever! Let's gggooooo!
They had to be rescued by the Midland 2511 loaner, and Thomas didn't get another chance to take a train for six years. By that point William had been scrapped and, I'm sorry to say, the only response from Thomas (whom, you must recall, had till then never known anything but the rather dysfunctional atmosphere at early Vicarstown) was "good riddance."
Charles was by far the friendliest and happy-go-luckiest of the W. & S. lot, and he had good fun hazing the new young recruit from the mainland. Edward had never before done any work besides taking passengers, and, very earnest about following all advice to the letter, he fell for every single practical joke going. It was pretty funny, until Charlie hid the then young-railway's only saloon coach so that Edward wouldn't be able to find it for an important directors' shindig, but then Charlie got mixed up and couldn't find the damned thing either.
The subsequent double chewing-out by then-C.M.E. Hatt probably single-handedly explains why his doctor then ordered him to not exert himself again. Ever. He nearly keeled over right in the middle of this bawling-out.
The poor saloon remained lost for the next eleven months. She was recovered from an overgrown old spur with substantial water damage, cursing Charlie's name.
