When You Show Memes To Your Partner (An Edward x Toby FanFic):

Toby was peacefully sipping his favorite cup of earl gray tea while silently humming to himself. The bright sunlight beamed through the windows while little songbirds softly chirped outside. The Fat Controller had decided to give him and his husband, Edward, a day off. No shunting trucks, no stress, just a relaxing day for the both of them. Toby happily sighed, it seemed like a long time that he was given a break for once. It’s not like he complained about doing work like James or sometimes Gordon, it's just that he didn’t get to spend time with Edward.

“Ahhh~ Such a lovely day… I wonder what should me and Eddie do? Maybe go to the beach? Take care of each others’ kids?” Toby chuckled to himself a little. No, of course not. Edward had Thomas while Toby and his wife, Henrietta, had Percy, Phillip and Pluto. All four of them were really crazy to handle in their own ways. Just as Toby was tentatively wondering to himself, Edward was walking down the staircase, wearing just a light blue shirt with blue jeans, looking very tired as usual. 

“Hello honey, did you have a decent sleep yesterday?” Toby quietly asked the blue tender engine.

Edward grumbled a bit before replying. “Well, I don’t think ‘decent’ is the right word to describe it…. More like, ‘strange’....”

Edward poured a coffee jug into his favorite mug that was written “Fuck Off, I’m Gay and I Have Insomnia” on it before drinking it like it was water. “Anyways, I was thinking I wanted to show you something today.”

“What is it?” asked Toby curiously. Edward then put down his coffee mug on the countertop and went to grab his laptop from the living room. After a few minutes, Edward then placed his laptop on the table and opened it. Toby leaned to see what his partner was doing while Edward was busy punching letters into the keyboard. 

“What are you typing?” questioned Toby with a raised eyebrow.

“My favorite memes.” Edward replied back.

“Memes? What are they?”

“Oh, they’re just amusing or interesting stuff online. They are quite hilarious. If you understand them.” Edward smiled with a cheeky grin on his face.

After Edward was done typing in the word ‘meme” in the search bar, he then went to the images section and started scrolling through the page. Toby had a very confused and judgemental face while his eyes followed on the sidebar. After a few minutes of scrolling through, Edward clicked on an image of the Peter Griffin Death Pose and showed it to Toby.

“What the heck is that?!?” Toby exclaimed in surprise. “Why is this guy on the ground while posing like that?!?!”

Edward started laughing his ass off as Toby continued to question the image in hand with a lot of judgment.

“O-Oh…. That’s the Dead Peter Griffin meme….” Edward snorted as he tried to contain his laughter. “D-Do you like it?....”

“No! Of course I don’t!!!” Toby slapped Edward on his arm with annoyment. “Why do you people think it’s funny to make a joke out of somebody lying on the ground while they’re clearly dying?!!?”

“Well, you can’t blame me!!!! It’s the internet who did all of this!!!” Edward retorted who was definitely trying not to piss himself due to laughter. He then scrolled through the page once more before landing on the Yippee Creature image.

“Well, that's a peculiar-Uhhhhh ...Creature right there….He looks kinda…Goofy? For some reason?” Toby stated as he examined the image. “Although, I think he looks quite cute though! What a nice-looking fella right here!”

“Yeah, he does. People call him the ‘Autism Creature’ for a reason.” Edward replied. “He reminds me like Gordon, doesn’t he?”

“Oh yeah!” Toby chortled. “Especially him sometimes staring into the distance like that! That’s the funniest thing about him.”

For 4 hours, Edward and Toby were scrolling through viral images and memes, commenting and reacting to them. Sometimes, the reactions were funny, sometimes, they weren’t. And some of them had the couple with confused faces just by looking at them. When dusk had finally fallen, the Steam Team were at Tidmouth Sheds, sharing stories with each other in the sheds. 

“Did you guys know that Thomas got into another crash today?” Percy requested.

“Hm! Really?” Gordon asked with a boastful face.

“PERCY!!!!!” Thomas retorted back with frustration. 

“Now, you two. Don’t fight or else we’ll have an argument in our hands.” Toby calmly consoled the two. 

“What did you and Edward do today?” Henry asked Toby with a curious look on his face. 

“Well, I showed Toby my favorite memes on my laptop. The whole experience was pretty interesting to say the least. We even got a few laughs out of it.” Edward answered back.

“Gordon, you remind me of the Yippee Creature image after Edward showed it to me now.” Toby said.

Gordon was utterly baffled, he was utmost embarrassed that his best friend has compared him to a viral meme.

“WHAT?!?!?!” Gordon shouted.

Everybody started chuckling as Gordon’s turned redder than James’ splendid paint. Toby and Edward were giggling while the others laughed at Gordon hysterically. They both looked at each other endearingly as the moon twinkled in the dark night sky. Today sure has been a good day….

5, 6, 7 - 06/09/2023 : first, some ideas for my human Edward, thought i might as well include these, for the craic i guess x ... then a rare one of Toby (i havent drawn him since.. i should change that) and Diesel, then that one barbie meme with Edward n James, dont get comfy with either of these designs coz they're not sticking x

-How long have you been a part of the fandom?

I've been online and contributing on-and-off since 2009! before that, i was a lurker for a year or two. cars fanfiction on ffnet got me into writing and changed the entire course of my life, which is pretty hilarious. I've only taken 2 breaks from the fandom in my life- from about 2012-2016 (i focused on x-men during this time), and then in mid 2020-mid 2024 (focused on minecraft). my favorite early contribution to the fandom has to be this fanart of doc and lightning. note the date posted ;) and yes, that is oldschool DA-speak <3

-How did you get involved in the fandom?

I was always an artist and writer- i was writing, illustrating, and binding my own little 'books' at age 5. i liked to draw and write, so i did. a few years later, this naturally extended to cars. i got online and started sharing, and i've never stopped. later on, the cars 3 hype period led me to create a discord account in 2017. in the ensuing chaos of discords being deleted repeatedly, i was recruited by someone similarly responsible-minded and set up the carburetor county server, which still stands today. ive met some of the most wonderful people thru that server/thru tumblr and in this fandom.

-Who is your favorite character and why?

HEHEHE. well first of all, i should start by saying ive always loved anthropomorphic machines. i grew up on ttte. for my 3rd birthday they got me an engineer's cap. they used to take me trainspotting to calm me down. now, picture 7 year old me standing in front of the CRT cassette-cabinet, excitedly playing the brand-new Incredibles 2-disc DVD set on our brand-new DVD player in november 2004, and lightning mcqueen appears onscreen. oh i was done for from the start. its been 20 long years of Favorite Character. and seeing Cars finally, after a year and a half of tv commercials? i was lightning mcqueen at recess. i started the fourth grade and introduced myself by saying i'd watched Cars over the summer and that everyone else should, too. the only merch i owned was an empty promotional cereal box because the lightning mcqueen mcdonalds toy was impossible to come by, so if i wanted to see any pictures of the characters i had to look at the cereal box because there was no computer and the movie wasnt on dvd yet. ah but the question is Why. obviously i must have some form of autism or adhd or something, but beyond that there's still plenty reason. (i tried to write it out, but have a List Of Madness instead.) let's start out easy: he's fucking hilarious. he's mean, he speaks his mind, and hes got bite to go with the bark. his relentless bitchy nature makes him a perfect target for slapstick karma. he's clueless, he doesnt know anything. out loud he talks smack but his actions? theyre all sweet. complains about tractor tipping but goes with mater and hangs out anyway. goes 'yeah okay 🙄' to cruz but gives her his racing number. whines about the 'schoolbus of death' but he jumps in front to help without thinking. calls doc selfish and a liar but thinks about him when he gives up his dreams. he says 'light your neon' and they leave it on for 20 years. he takes puns literally. he snores. he drives like he's dancing. he has stress dreams. he cant act. he hallucinates. he's an insomniac. hes secretly a nervous wreck. hes braver than all of us combined. he's a blue-eyed man who punches the walls. everyone hates him. everyone loves him. he refused to sign any racing deals unless mack was his hauler. he has to pave the stupid road and do character-building manual labor but by god hes going to do a good job. he's going to figure out that stupid turn and better himself even if he's up all night because he refuses to give up. when smokey reminds him that people care about him and asks him to find himself again, he lifts his chin and says 'yes sir' like he means it. he's also a really cool vehicle, like on a technical level. and his design kicks ass. incredible mix of 'cute talking cartoon car' and 'holy shit thats an awesome piece of machinery'. (i would show some of my spec notes but theyre at least 20% headcanon). hes detailed, hes lovingly made and developed and cared for as a character. this all doesnt even Begin to cover why i like LMQ honestly, none of this is the type of deeper character analysis i would Like to say. but to me, he is the coolest guy ever, and he makes me very happy.

1 and 2: I've been a fan of Cars since 2006, when I saw it in the theater. Only within the last year have I gone balls-to-the wall with hyperfixating posting WOC art online, writing fanfiction, and generally interacting with the fandom...so I guess I'm pretty new to the things, here. I'm not super active online because of my work schedule (I'm a groundskeepee for a local zoo), but I try the best I can with the time/energy I have at the end of the day.

3. Doc Hudson, hands-down. When I first saw the movie, I liked Doc...but thought he was being rude and unfair to Lightning. Fast forward a while to when I got my dream job, teaching college geology. After three years, I realized that the admins didn't give a shit about education and that they seemed to be doing everything in their power to shut down anything that myself, or other professors, tried to do for the student body. I quickly became disillusioned by the apathy and lack of support...and I had to resign because the stress was literally killing me. I know now that this is a common theme in higher ed...but all I wanted to do was teach. To see that flame of understanding kindled in the eyes of my students...

To lose that, was like having my soul pureed in a blender, and I...havent been able to teach since.

Every time I hear Doc's line "there was a lot left in me, and I never got the chance to show 'em"...I tear up. He's still reeling from an apathy that ended his career ..and I understand how hard that feeling can be to rebound from, how you can lock everything in a garage and hide behind a new personality... because your old life is too painful to think about.

8 - 25/11/2023 : was thinking about book covers, forgot why, but also on the name of my story for Ru, Toni, those fellows, usually i just call it Violet, but i feel maybe its a bit, nothing, idk, like its not catchy enough, so i have another idea of expanding it into You, me, & Violet, and heres a quick mockup of what a book cover for it could look like.. u can tell i got graphic design qualifications from the late 2010s x (shut up i luv this doodle)

9-11 - 25/11/2023 : Robin redesigns.. again.. just some concept doodles, mostly just a change to his hair and his top, i thought adding more colour was essential, so, he'd usually wear like minty green colour trainers, i made those and, by extension, his jumper, the same blue colour, which isn't Too blue, it's still a little bit greeny, very slightly, just for some harmony in his design.. will need to draw more of this concept to really get a concrete final design

2 - 04/10/2023 : got a new puter! one of the first things i set to doing after getting set up was to draw a Ru, of course, it was also just me trying to get used to the new MS paint..... it feels very odd

9 - 08/10/2023 : something stupid i thought of and couldn't get out of my head for days so had to draw it..... little johnny from oingo boingo's only a lad, doing what he does best, fantasising about radios he wants oh so bad and running people down with a boyish craving for blood.. based on that 1 meme of the guy driving and thinking of a thing then making that insane face

10 - 09/10/2023 : based on that 1 silly vargskelethor song (that could not be less specific), had Shed 17 on the brain and was reminded of the milk song where the skeleton comes out.. thomarse dank 2 much milk and died..

11, 12 - 10/10/2023 : chooshada again :333 first a little doodle on my phone bc i was wondering about her livery, i do think she'd have originally been NER apple green but then painted NWR colours, butttt with a twist... coz i can do whatever i like... the twist is just that she's painted dark blue rather than a sky blue, coz its more her colour x

ALSO MS paint shada, wanted to draw her more uh, idk, detailed ig, idk i love this one, it also served as more train practice

13 - 13/10/2023 : previous one, but with COLOUR!! not much 2 say other than that shes very cute

14 - 18/10/2023 : saw a tweet abt old photos of engine crews posing with their crashed locos and how the NWR crews would do that, made me think of how, if Toni was (choo)shada's driver, she'd do that.. probably x .. very like her to slay in the midst of a terrible accident

15 - 22/10/2023 : predictably, i have some playlists for the ttte engines, one for Diesel which is notable here, so uhh, i have the scrapped song from the lorax "biggering" in there, bc i see it as like a Duck vs Diesel song, ik im surpassing several layers of cringe here but hear me out ok... i drew this at 2am coz i couldn't stop thinking of Duck lecturing Diesel

16, 17, 18 - 25/10/2023 : speaking of playlists, think i was listening to my Robin one here, and felt like drawing him, i have "the land of make believe" in there, which ive always found to be an oddly haunting song, so this is semi based on that, though that wouldn't be apparent if i hadn't just told u x .. this looks like vent art but tis not i was just having fun

also tiny chooshada, i was in the middle of writing something which i have literally Just remembered now and i was writing a scene where Ru is stuck between some characters who shes not looking forward to working with bc they're about to bicker the whole fuckin time and one of them thinks shes a dick, so i drew her being sad that shes forced to work with morons..... and speak of the devil, 3rd drawing is here with 2 of the aforementioned morons :D i think D+D take a liking to her, they're just a little obnoxious (love them for that)

19 - 27/10/2023 : a quick(ish) digital thing of Chooshada again that i did on the side of another project, more engine drawing practice he he, she'll be out of proportion and lacking detail but really it was just to not be too hard on myself about that, it did help i think to understand how to draw her more, plus just look at her lil face... also she has a number here, doesn't mean much other than 8 being her lucky number, other than 11, like those are just her numbers, suppose i could have it be 1188 to ref her bday, idfk x

1 - 02/08/2023 : Trixie :) i think this is the first traditional thing i drew of her? i like it but im still ironing out the kinks a bit with her

2 - 04/08/2023 : one of my more ambitious-ish pieces of the year, i wanted to draw a fullbody of Ru in a unique pose surrounded by all her things, think of it like a fun eye spy i guess x theres obvs some bits i could have done better but overall im happy with the pose

3 - 05/08/2023 : found a silly pic and it reminded me of Alice so i drew her over it... on her weekly aldi shop in her jarmas x

4, 5, 6 - 16/08/2023 : think i was testing out a new sketchbook, paper is a bit funny and not something ive drawn on for awhile, since i usually buy the same kind of sketchbook every time, but these 3 doodles are from a new one, a lil Ru and some silly ones

7, 8, 9 - 17/08/2023 : some silly phone doodles of Trixie, mostly, Richie is there too...... she is a diesel engine, and also smells, naturally.. a lil lineless thing of her in there too, think i was figuring out some colours

10 - 20/08/2023 : felt like doing some inked traditional art again, so did a lil Ru doodle x

11 - 21/08/2023 : a very random fanart for a mobile game!! i wanted to draw the mains from Text Express, which is a really good mobile game actually... i kno they gay

12 - 24/08/2023 : now commencing train derangement.... heres a pen doodle of Edward from TTTE <3 i did say there would be more pen doodles soon

13, 14 - 26/08/2023 : little face doodles, decided to turn Ru into a choochoo (i like to call her chooshada), so theres also some initial pen doodles of her as her basis, the NER 398 Class, the class had a history of boiler explosions and had many rebuilds, so i think its happened to her... at least once x

5 - 15/06/2023 : MEAT!!!!!!! im mad i didnt finish this, i was considering not posting this since its a WIP, but...... its been long enough, i think its worth posting just for clarity ig x

coming off the tails of the colour wheel trend, i wanted to try it with my OCs, luckily i have more than enough to fill it lmao, it meant i got to draw some OCs that don't get drawn enough, and try out some interesting dynamics and all, sticking characters together who usually wouldn't be seen together.... bummer i didn't finish it, but maybe one day! love toni with terry like same girl... tho if both of them were in a room together with me it would be the end of me fr.. i mean wut..... who said dat

1 - 03/07/2023 : one of my fave drawings of this year! Sage and Buttercup hangin out, Sage is.. not good at taking photos, meanwhile Butters is defo a bit of a shutterbug, just brothers who are total opposites of one another

2 - 07/07/2023 : twas thinking of Kubo again at this point and wanted to doodle him, hes a bit emo but thats ok x

3, 4 - 18/07/2022 : 2 pen doodles (spooky!) of Ru n Toni, i wanted to doodle them semi realistic, mostly exploring their facial features, Toni is my fave of these 2 coz honestly thats exactly how id imagine she'd look, with her rounder features and a bit of a pronounced chin, her smaller (height wise) nose, generally smaller and rounder features than Ru... Ru's eyes are quite pretty here tho... u will see more pen doodles soon

5 - 19/07/2023 : saw a post (think its on my OC tag blog actually) about hard lad bisexual men walking into poles and busting their noses and walking away pretending like nothing happened, and it immediately made me think of Caspian, so i drew him having a nose sploot and trying to act cool, he'd promptly walk away snorting with his hands in his pockets and spitting

6, 7 - 20/07/2023 : back 2 basics Ru! one of my fave Rushada drawings, dressed a lil differently and proposing a life where she was a worm... would u still love her? be honest x

2nd one, i think im funny he he.. Surge in the sonic OVA meme pose calling Kit Wails (like wa tails. like wario. so surge is probably wonic.) i had a lot of fun drawing this tbh and im happy with the execution

8 - 25/07/2023 : no way.. Ru and her weird cat (Luisa)....... i said somethin like that and it made me think of them as the Spirit Phone cover art, so i drew this, another of my faves, this was a good month for art despite not drawing much

9 - 26/07/2023 : another of Ru n Luisa, i think Ru's hair is long enough for Luisa to hide in if she wants, probably when she's upset, Ru doesn't quite know how to react, which is a common thing with her and Luisa coz thats not her kid she just happens to get stuck babysitting her.. i luv Ru here shes adorable

10, 11 - 30/07/2023 : phone doodles! tried planning out what Trixie's fullbody would look like, im pleased with this but will have to do a fully detailed drawing at some point. last one is a silly TTTE reference, i think Trixie likes to honk at Richie bc she is very rude x
