The talented Mr Ripley has recently become one of my favourite movies, and every time I re-watch it I just feel worse and worse for Peter. He deserved so much better :’)

Unpopular opinion - saltburn is a lesser version of the talented Mr Ripley.
I watched the latter in October 2023 absolutely adoring it, and seeing saltburn now is... Disappointing. A bit. It's a good film! Just clearly had TTMR in mind when shot and written.

I’m starting a new fic!!
Anyone who knows about The Talented Mr. Ripley can draw a lot of similarities between it and Saltburn!! I love the idea of interchanging the characters and I just thought It would be fun to interpret TTMR in a new way!
This fic will mostly follow the canon events of the movie with things from the book added here and there, there will also be original scenes!
Please ignore any inconsistencies, I had to tweak a few things to fit some characters!

Tom Ripley singing the My Funny Valentine lyric of stay, little valentine while looking over at Dickie like he’s silently asking to keep his presence, his friendship. If Dickie would allow Tom the luxury of his unwavering child-like attention for longer. I will never shut up abt it

Highsmith brings out the lit student in me so here’s a quick (but not short) analysis of this extract
“The only thing that really interested him was whether the police had found anything that actually incriminated Dickie in the murder of Freddie Miles. And he could hardly say that that really interested him, personally.”
There’s an overuse of filler words, partially to indicate Tom’s jumbled mind and partially to give the reader a look into how he is trying to rationalise these thoughts by acting like the “Tom” in his mind — unassuming, dumb, and bumbling. Because Dickie would never use such boring filler words, he’d be concise, or at least pretty about it.
“And he could hardly…” being a separate sentence to the first because Tom is acting out to himself what he will say to the police, as he identifies himself to them a few paragraphs later. Also to switch back into his “Tom” persona after delving ever so slightly into a tangent.
The “personally” again indicating how much he’s trying to take on this role of Tom now, because whilst he himself is very bothered by this whole ordeal, Tom wouldn’t be. And he is Tom. So he has to make a real point of personally.
Also, after this sentence, the paragraph delves into straight mundane narration of his next actions. Tom trying to distract himself. Tom trying to play his role by doing things Tom would do, and doing them deliberately, to focus his attention on everything but Dickie because he cannot merge the two or allow himself to dwell too long on what he has done.

Ooh I would die of happiness if you wrote a book!Tom/Peter fic. “Tommie boy” agrees to go to the UK with Peter, exchanges his Dickie obsession for a Peter obsession…chaos ensues.
Honestly, while I was very confused by the tangent the film took, Tom/Peter is not without textual basis. Peter DOES invite Tom to his home in Ireland and Tom DOES think about how easy it would be for the same thing to happen with Peter that had happened with Dickie. And the fact that he rejects Peter's invite because he's afraid of what he might do to Peter?? Talk about a moment of clarity. Tommie in Ireland would be a natural sequel to TTMR.
I'll need to find some 20th century Gothic books set in remote Ireland to get the vibe down, so if anyone has a rec please share

i agree, i was saying that "ttmr wasnt disturbing" because so many people have classified it as a "disturbing" movie when it really isn't. if we had to go with what is "disturbing" between the two, I'd say saltburn, which has shock content for the sake of shock content (oliver fucking himself on felix's grave & everything you mentioned) . there's no reason behind it. you don't sympathize with the main character that you do tom ripley, and it's never explained why he (oliver) pretends to be lower middle class when he's really upper middle class. you could argue that the grave scene was to show oliver's obsession with felix, but there were many other ways to do that (grave fucking is just not my thing, sorry)
there's a motive behind tom, even if you go with the narrative that he's a "psychopath"/"sociopath" (which i don't believe at all, personally). he lived in such poverty that after tasting what dickie offered him (life in luxury), he realized that after Dickie's death he wouldn't get that again. it's portrayed as a class struggle, showing how far someone might go just to escape their poverty & squalor.
for oliver? i actually have no idea why he did what he did other than he just. wanted to??? i guess you could argue that his upper middle class life is different than felix's upper class life, but. the gap is better shown between lower class/upper class. or hell, even lower/middle class.
tl;dr you're right it's literally just the talented mr ripley but with random shock scenes thrown in for fun. people are allowed to like movies, this isn't an attack on anyone for that, but personally i see saltburn as some wattpad writer's fantasy put into a film
So I read through what happened in Saltburn and I fail to see what everyone was freaking out about. That shit was literally just The Talented Mr Ripley with some masturbation and like what, oh wow he drank some nasty bath water and gave cunnilingus to a girl on her period. I thought it was way worse and was gonna be some fucked up rich people incest cult plot or something.
If I watch it it watch it but it isn’t the most disturbing movie ever made like people make it out to be.
