Earlier this month, we detoured to #pasorobles specifically to visit @sensoriopaso. R was determined to see this ginormous light installation. We arrived early, during daylight & slowly as the sunset the lights glowed brighter & brighter. It was magical, powerful & photos do not give this space justice. Thousands of solar powered lights that just blanketing the small valley. #Pizza, what brings friends together. Our meal at @pizzeriamozza was a true act of friendship. @stroupinsurance & I became amigas over pizza, even having a #pizzaversary 🍕 date. So when in #losangeles, I sought out the best I could find. We had a front row view of the action, watching the #pizzas get assembled then baked in the #woodfireoven. Slight #sourdough, proper chew, I wished for tiny bit more char but it was so good! We went for the "meaty" #mushroom & the cheeseless #myerlemon #pies. Perfect #tomatosauce, not too sweet or acidic. Rounded out with #meatballs with great texture, a mound of #salad with fresh #anchovydressing. Ended with a seasonal berry #pavlova & I dare say, a #butterscotchbudino that rivals (& beat) an Oakland favorite. Oh, we also made friends with our countermates, trading a slice so I could try the squash blossom topped with burrata. Oh @portosbakery, I don't know why it took me so long to discover you! I appreciate the legacy & heritage of your #cuban roots but what really got me was the actual business. I've only been to the #BuenaPark location a couple of times. The sheer volume of delicious, well made, quality ingredient sweet and savory goods at the value prices is honestly, astounding. I'm not easily impressed, I have so much respect for how you get it all done! Now for the food, I already dream about the Parisian #chocolatecake made w Belgium #chocolate, light & airy, the #medianoche #porksandwich on a slightly sweet brioche like bun with pickles, the #potatoball filled w seasoned ground beef & fried to a crisp plus flaky #meatpies. The #cheeserolls are a given. Now add #mangomoussecake cuz y'all know how I'm a sucker for good #cake. I totally get why folks check luggage to bring ginormous bags of tasty treats onboard as a carryons. Shoot, I've been a vehicle for my visits but I'll be joining y'all next I fly in. Headed to #DTLA, this time with #chicharron on my mind. This was not the #porkrinds of my youth, this was extra meaty, unctous and garlicky too. #Souvide #porkbelly w skin, then thick sliced and fried to a glorious state. We added flavorful whipped lentils, tender #bluecorntortillas and some tangy #esquite too. Old friends are a treasure. Pursuing a passion is beautiful. Combine the two, we found ourselves at @colburnschool for the first concert of the #losangeles #brassband. R's amigo since they were 15 yrs old, when she played the bassoon and he continues to play the tuba to this day. Now a music professor, D and his graduate student now conductor put together this amazing group of musicians. The inclusion was wonderful; young, old, professional, novice, including a young son who asked to include his trumpet playing papa who generally plays Mexican banda, and players barely big enough to hold a French horn. Seeing the pure joy and giddiness in D's eyes while the notes soared in the concert hall made it all that much more special. For the love of #tacos, I eat many. These at @tacomaria in #costamesa will remain as one of my most memorable #foodmemories overall. From the crisp #littlegem #cesarsalad, the almost gooey #oystermushroom #quesadilla, #margarita w #blacksalt, leading into the #tacos. Some deeply nostalgic #taquitos de papa that took me back to Lenten meals of my youth to a rich #porkbelly w slightly sweet #pilloncio glaze & ripe peaches then ultimately #hangersteak with #bacon & roasted #chiles. #Farmtotable done right, approachable not precious. I spoke to chef's wife, mention that I eat in Mexico. That this, not just for the ingredients but also the technique & overall flavors was the best #elevatedmexican food I have had stateside. We gave each other gracias on my way out.
