My opinion of the manga 'Sweetness and Lightning' by Gido Amagakure

Because I finished the final volume yesterday.

I thought it was really sweet. Although sometimes, I feel like we could have known more about Kohei Inuzuka's wife and more about the grief felt by both him and Tsumugi. I thought the flashbacks were quite short when it came to the wife.

But the characters are quite memorable. My favourite character is Kotori. Honestly, I would really love seeing more of her. I also wish I got to see Tsumugi growing up. She's quite cute and such a great daughter. And Kohei is one of the best fathers I've seen in a long time.

(in my humble opinion, his manga version is hotter than the anime version lol)

I also like how they treated the romantic feelings Kotori had for Kohei. The manga writer established immediately that it was wrong for them to date while she's in high school simply because he's a teacher and she's a student. He doesn't even give any indication of Kohei's own romantic feeling until the end of the manga, when he starts to return them when Kotori is like 29 and she's wayy more mature.

Did I mention Tsumugi was great? Yeah I did. Tsumugi is amazing, period.

And all the food they made looked delicious.

Most of the kids in this bracket are exceptional in some way. They’re dragons, or magical girls, or robots, or they were ordinary kids until they ran into a magical fairy or an apocalypse or a middle-aged con artist or something. Most truly ordinary children here are children in extraordinary circumstances. Tsumugi is four, and she likes cooking with Daddy.

Tsumugi is, in many ways, a normal preschooler. She wants to be good, within the limits of her understanding and attention span. She wants to do fun stuff, and avoid boring stuff, and eat good food. She doesn’t quite understand where Mommy went. She has a vivid imagination, unhindered by what she doesn’t know about the world and fueled by what she does.

Tsumugi is in this bracket not because of her concept, but because of her execution. If you’ve watched (or read) Sweetness and Lightning, you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, I’m not sure what I can tell you to convey the way she’s written, animated, acted. Maybe you’ll get some idea if I show you what Tumblr thinks? (You'd get a better idea if I showed you the gifs, but I'm not doing that. For reasons.)

Props to Sweetness and Lightning for being one of the few anime where the child characters are played by actual children. I feel like if they'd taken the easier route and cast adult seiyuu to do squeaky voices, it'd have a lot less charm and the cute or more emotional moments wouldn't hit as well as they do with child VAs

So I made a post a while ago that has become relatively popular. Which was of Unasaka Miri from "Buddy Daddies", Anya Forger from Spy X Family, and Eri from My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia) would be friends if they met and I'm glad so many people agree! Then I thought of Inuzuka Tsumugi from "Sweetness and Lightning", and thought of making it a quartet but then someone brought up Kotaro from "Kotaro Lives Alone", and then I thought of Kotoshi Naru from "Barakamon" and then I thought of Sakuragi Yaeka from "Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting".

You know what? LET'S MAKE IT A CLUB!

(I would also like to point out that the first three girls that would've made a trio, all had either parental issues or major life issues that resulted in a change in lifestyle)
