For @nightsoulvixen's Tsumary Week
Day 1: Childhood
Tumblr media
Headcanon:
Back in elementary school, Mary was a very popular kid.
Her ability to play competitive card games for grown-ups like kuruta and hanafuda made the other children admire her immensely.
Her intelligence was also apparent to them as she was the top student in class.
This resulted in kids sharing their snacks with Mary and inviting her to play games with them during recess.
However, things took a turn when Tsuzura started attending public school.
Mary's attention was abruptly diverted to Tsuzura by the children in class, which led to the blonde growing resentment towards Tsuzura.
Gradually, the other children stopped watching her play cards, sharing their snacks, and inviting her to play games with them during recess.
Mary was left feeling essentially alone because of this.
One day, at recess, while playing a thrilling game of tag with the children from class, Tsuzura noticed Mary reading a book all by herself on the bench.
Her dark-yellow eyes, glued to the pages, held sadness in them as they tried to avoid shedding tears.
Tsuzura continued to look at the girl as she slowly stopped running, feeling sympathy for her fellow classmate.
As she ponders what to do, a small gasp comes out of her lips and a smile begins to curl.
Later in the day, as Mary is walking down the hallway, the blonde feels a light tap on her shoulder.
Turning around, she sees Tsuzura smiling at her with an envelope that had a heart seal in her hand as she holds it out.
The blue-haired girl goes on to inform Mary that her birthday is coming soon and expresses her desire for her to come!
Mary was surprised by the offer and accepted it slowly, which filled Tsuzura with immense joy as she skipped off.
She then expresses her excitement about seeing Mary at the party.
Mary's eyes are fixed on the invitation before looking back at Tsuzura, a hint of blush creeping up on her cheeks.

Generally, I've concluded that when an anime is an adaptation of a manga, it's more enjoyable to watch the anime first, then go back and experience the bonus details from the manga.
But I watched Wind Breaker ep 1 just now, and I thought it really enhanced the story! I loved the music choices, and the choreography of Sakura's solo fight against the gang was so impressive!! Not to mention everything being in color~ To be fair it's been like six months since I read that part of volume 1 (and I only finished volume 1 a couple weeks ago) and I haven't gotten to volume 2 yet, but now I'm debating whether to watch past where I've read or not...
Also, I pulled out a few translations I liked from the subtitles! No time stamps on these because I was watching with my dad so I didn't pause it. (I forget to pay attention to the on-screen/image text but he noticed the Toilet sign in the cafe was written in English.)
These may not be 100% exact, but something like this:
うまっ! (uma-!) Yum!
また来るね (mata kuru ne) I'll swing by again
ボケ (boke) Moron
あいつには言わないでくれ (aitsu ni ha iwanaide kure) Don't tell you-know-who [this is a GENIUS approach to 'aitsu' :0 ]
はあ?! (haa?!) What?!
つまり。(tsumari) I think. [came after another sentence]

e-zuka posted some personal sight-seeing tips for Tokamachi to his blog this week.
Food:  He says anywhere you go, the food’s going to be good, and to be sure to try the goods provided at the event by local vendors
Locations:
1) Hatoya glasses studio (run by his cousin; he once bought a guitar and amp from here, so maybe a bit more than a glasses shop?)
2) Shimada Pharmacy (run by a friend who is in the GR copy band 「牛牛隊」; he appeared on the TBS GR show)
3) Atago kindergarten (where wee e-zuka attended)
4) Tokamachi elementary school (ditto; he says he had asthma as a kid and the climb to the school was hard)
5) Tokamachi gymnasium (where he played tennis) and the Tokamachi Municipal Hall (his last high school concert)
6) Suwa Jinja Shrine (his little sister was married here; and the family went to hatsumode here each year)
7) Tokamachi high school
8) Honjoin Gokoku temple
9) Echigo-Tsumari Cultural Hall (the venue!)

Niigata, aka, Nii-sama!
Tumblr media
How is everyone doing? This Mari from Team Lari.
We’ve said goodbye to the last of the Kanto region with Gunma. Now we are 15 of 47 and traversing towards the Chubu region. Hmn, let’s start with Niigata, which once more faces the Sea of Japan with little Sado Island tagging along for the prefectural ride. Niigata produces a great amount of rice and rice products. Get your sake ready!
Tumblr media
-Echigo Tsumari
*Home of some very innovative art shows.
* “Every three years, the Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale is held in the region for a few weeks in summer (the next in 2018). During these art festivals, between 100 to 200 new art pieces are created and displayed in addition to the permanent installations.” (https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e7650.html)
*So, yeah, that sound pretty fun. There’s some motivation to attempt and visit Japan in 2018, even though my wallet is telling me no.
*Also, the place ends in “Mari.” It’s like it’s calling me over.
*Unfortunately, though the landscape of Echigo Tsumari is breathe-taking, most of the younger generation have began to move out to escape extreme weather conditions or to find opportunities in larger cities.
*This makes me think of “Wolf Children,” where the mother moves to a rural area to raise half-human and half-wolf children away from the city. There, she discovers the rewards of living off of the land, bonding with her children. If you watch it, I recommend bringing some tissues with you.
Tumblr media
*Heeey, if Laurel and I ever move to Japan, this may be the place to pick from!
-Yuzawa
*Umm, well, yes. This would happen to be another skin resort town. If anything in my life has amounted to something, it would be my intuition. With all of these skier resorts in Japan and me
wanting to go to Japan, I just need to suck it up and get me a pair of skis!
*Apparently, there are around 20 resorts to pick from.
*I didn’t really think about this either. Maybe I can try snow boarding…hmn…
Tumblr media
-Sado Island
Tumblr media
*One of Japan’s largest islands, this little buddy lives off of the coast of Niigata.
*In Sado Island’s history, the area was used as a place for exiles to reside at. Kind of like Australia and England. Or America and England.
*There’s a gold mine that was closed down in the year we were born, 1989, but is still accessible for learning purposes!
*Laurel would like me to remind everyone that we really have to go there to see the Japanese Ibis, the only place in the world where the bird can be found, since it’s extinct in the wild.
*Another must is the Earth Day Celebration! It’s a three day celebration with events and workshops (like dancing and music making!)
Tadaa! 15 of 47 have been completed! I’m so excited that we are moving forward inch by inch. I hope I’ve helped others learn a bit more about Japan. Please, let me know if there’s anything more you’d like to add. I’m just looking up stuff willy nilly and adding anime and personal experiences. If you’ve gone to the real deal, I really really want to know!
With that, Mari out!

A famous ski area easily accessed from Tokyo, Yuzawa is clearly a favorite spot with tourists.
The winter season for November to May brings most of its visitors, so be sure to swing by the area then. Here’s a tip: book a resort combination ticket to ski down the most slopes at the most economic price possible!
1. An alcohol enthusiast's dream, where one can sample over a few hundred kinds of sake, salt and miso!
With Japan’s varying climate, its nationwide production of sake (a type of strong Japanese liquor), differs greatly from prefecture to prefecture. In that sense, sake has become a medium for the locality to express its unique culture, climate and ingredients. What an artful blend indeed! In Ponshukan, visitors can learn more about the different kinds of sake produced, in say Okinawa versus Niigata, as well as sample them.
The location of Ponshukan in Niigata is also highly apt, with locals in Niigata being the craziest over sake and sake consumption levels being the highest in the country. Prepare to wreak havoc. Then, go forth and sample over 115 kinds of sake in the museum! For those who want some quick side dishes with their sake, fresh cucumber, miso and salt are also great pairings.
Be sure to taste the local speciality, Echigo Tsurukame Junmaiginjo Yamahai, which evokes a creamy taste brought about by longer brewing compared to regular sake.
2. Ski the forgiving slopes at the Naspa Ski Garden if you are a beginner, or with children
A self-professed skiers only resort, Naspa Ski Garden sells like hotcakes in the winter with families and children. In the winter, you can easily spot the many children receiving basic skiing lessons from instructors on site, as well as the adults going a few rounds on the basic slopes. The ski garden is one of the rare few in Japan with a ‘Pingu’ theme, a popular Japanese penguin cartoon. Local children often fawn over its adorableness, and crowd around the figurines for pictures. You might even catch a life-sized Pingu plushie walking around the resort if you are lucky enough!
The exciting white slopes and snowy wonderland is no doubt the main inspiration for the setting of famous Nobel prize-winning novel, Yukiguni (Snow Country). Niigata, with its multiple resorts like Naspa Ski Garden, can certainly earn its proud name of ‘Snow Country’.
3. Admire local and international art installations set as naturally as possible in the beautiful snowy landscape
The Echigo-Tsumari Art Field is a beautiful contradiction–the rural countryside of Echigo Tsumari juxtaposed against modern art is undeniably pleasing. Its location is certainly most apt in complementing the Art Field’s general message: to revitalize the dying past with exciting novelty, to sustain the aging community by bringing back youths and jobs. The background of abandoned buildings, schools and ubiquitous rice fields are incorporated as space for the artwork, making the latter very much alive.
For those visiting next year in 2018, you are in luck! Every three years, the Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale is held in the region for a few weeks in summer. During these art festivals, between 100 to 200 new art pieces are created and displayed in addition to the permanent installations. The ongoing expansion of the art field certainly allows you a unique experience every time one visits.
4. Hike the Kiyotsu Gorge on a cool summer day for the beautiful nature of Echigo Yuzawa
One of the top three gorges in Japan, Kiyotsu Gorge is a majestic geographical beauty nestled away in the mountains between Shiozawa and Tokamachi. The combined landscape of the flowing Kiyotsu River and mountains overhead is simply a stunning sight. For those who are physically fit, the 7 hour hike along the river that takes you to the back side of Yuzawa is highly recommended for the views along the way. Once you have finally reached the gorge, a tunnel awaits. It is a simple stroll after the strenuous hike, featuring four viewing stations offering spectacular views of the cliffs and rivers. Art pieces of the gorge, a short video projected onto the tunnel wall showing the changing of the seasons, and stuffed wildlife are also dispersed throughout, allowing you to admire and learn about the gorge.
Outside the gorge, there is a rustic little community of restaurants, a ryokan and an onsen, so definitely stay a night there for the gorgeous sunrise and an experience of living right next to such natural majesty.
5. Play in the flower gardens and feed some goats in the backdrop of the lovely Yuzawa Valley
With a serene background of the Yuzawa Valley, children and adults alike are often seen frolicking in the gorgeous flower gardens. This is especially picturesque in the spring and summer when the flowers are in full bloom. There are even clusters of wild goats you can feed! Although, be sure to buy the feed from local vendors there in order not to endanger the goats’ diets or the natural ecosystem of the alpine garden.
Check out the go-kart area where you can spin a few rounds with the children in juvenile fun, before heading for some gelato available in the shops nearby. A short stopover in the Yuzawa Highland Alpine Garden can indeed be the perfect breather away from the hustle and bustle of Niigata city or Tokyo.
6. Try out your hand at the best slopes near Tokyo for advanced skiers and snowboarders in the Kagura Ski Resort
The Kagura Ski Resort offers not only exceptionally heavy snowfall which is perfect for skiing, but also a picturesque view of Niigata’s boundary mountains. This sure acts as an amazing backdrop to pictures! Furthermore, Kagura’s wide variety of slopes is clearly demonstrated by how it incorporates three areas, Kagura, Mitsumata and Tashiro. The extended space reduces the overcrowding during peak seasons, giving visitors more space to do as they wish. The Kagura Ski Resort is also interconnected with Naeba Ski Resort via the Dragondola, to form one large ski area referred to as Mt Naeba. Those who do not fear the height and would love an adrenaline adventure, be sure to take this gondola for the views of Mt Naeba!
Despite more beginner terrain, Kagura attracts lots of experienced skiers and snowboarders due to the off-piste and backcountry opportunities. So regardless of your skill level, you can certainly find a slope to your liking in the resort. Ski patrol also has an incredibly relaxed approach to tree skiing, so for those who are interested, knock yourself out, as long as you do it at your own risk.
7. Soak in the many onsens Yuzawa is famous for in the icy winter!
The onsens in Yuzawa have had an extensive history of nearly 800 years. Blessed with natural hot springs, many resorts have developed around them, and offer a unique experience for those who desire to stay overnight and soak in one. There are even supposed healing abilities, such as the soothing of nerve pain, rheumatism, stomach disease, gout and even chronic women’s diseases. Regardless of whether these medical benefits exist or not, the hot springs are an amazing way to warm up in the icy winters of Yuzawa.
One particular onsen is Kannakuri, a foot-spa whose spring waters are renowned to be great for the skin! Many are dressed in traditional yukatas for rent while enjoying their foot bath–a beautiful shot indeed! Otherwise, you can opt to visit the Yama-no-yu, which is popular with Yuzawa townsfolk due to its natural volcanic spring water. The waft of mineral water is strong within the onsen. The Kaidou-no-yu is also highly recommended as it boasts a beautiful ‘rotemburo’, or heated outdoor bath. The contrast of the warm bath with the winter wind is certainly an experience!
8. Feast on a warm and hearty bowl of buckwheat soba and mountain mushrooms when arriving at the train station
Catch an outstanding last meal in Yuzawa as you wait at the train station in Kikushin. The restaurant is just across the road from the East Exit of Echigo Yuzawa Station and serves up one of the meanest tempuras you will ever try. Kikushin is a traditional family owned store with a basic English menu, so you can be sure of the authenticity of meals offered! The sets are incredibly worth it. Do pair them with a local sake or umeshu (plum wine) for the best palate experience ever!
9. Learn about the life of Kawabata Yasunari, the first Japanese recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature
Yuzawa is the inspiration for a Nobel-prize winning literary work, Snow Country. The area’s luscious snow fall and pristine icy weather mirror that in Snow Country. The Yuzawa Town History Museum was set up to commemorate both Yasunari, the fictional wonderland of Snow Country and Yuzawa’s climate. The museum features memorabilia from the life of Kawabata Yasunari, as well as recreations about life in the book. It is indeed brought to life in the most apt location. The World of Japanese Paintings gallery located on the first floor is highly recommended. This exhibit features fourteen works depicting various scenes from Snow Country including Yukiguni no Tsuki. Be sure to visit to get an immersive experience of the famed novel, Snow Country!

Emiko and I had a “drive date” a few weeks ago to see the Tsumari Art Festival with exhibits spread out outdoors in the eastern part of the prefecture. Though our hunt for exhibits was only partially successful, we did stop by the Aozora Market in Oshima ward. Fresh local 🌽 🌶veggies, friendly staff, soba (buckwheat) noodles. Pretty good for a riverside pit stop! #joetsu #oshima #veggies #farmersmarket #aozora (at 大島青空市場) https://www.instagram.com/p/BoKufsngrh3/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=152ad69t2p2vp

Update 22 (Kanojo reveal and Anniversaries)
How is everybody doing?
I know it’s been a while. I’ve gotten a bit behind in school, and I have two exams this week. I finished the three sections of Linear Algebra homework that due be midnight tonight, and that was most of my weekend. Fortunately, I took off today, so I didn’t work. I still feel a little stressed with everything I have to do, but I’m just trying to somewhat steadily cut through it.
Tsumari, I’ve been very busy with school and haven’t managed my time as effectively as I should. But these are learning moments. So I’m just gonna do my best. Linda: Riveting pep talk, Kanchou.
Haha, Linda. Thanks.
So, announcement time. Who is my Kanojo? It gets a little confusing, but we were in the pre bf/gf phase, and won’t official be going out until we meet in person. That is still the case, so we’re still unofficially going out, but we’re past the bf/gf phase. And that’s because I actually asked her out (after she made me realize that neither of us had actually done that yet XD). So, now it’s unofficial in the “don’t want everyone to know yet” way. I told you it’s confusing. XD And I asked her out in the most cheesy way. I wrote her a letter of confession by hand, and I filled the whole page. And then I put the letter in an envelope and wrote “水無月へ” on the back of the envelope.
And then I turned our Discord DM into a visual novel. “Do you want to open the envelope?” etc. Anyway, by this time, some of you probably figured out who she is from “水無月へ”. So, the big reveal, my girlfriend is Minazuki-san, as in Minazuki Kaiari (KAiARI). Yeah, her. And the fanboy in me is still having trouble processing this. Like, I’m going out with Minazuki-san! You guys should know who she is with how much I’ve talk about her. I’ve mentioned her in 20 of my posts. I always thought she was nice and cool, and I wanted to be her friend. I’ve gotten to know her so much better now, and I don’t just call her Minazuki-san anymore (if you were worried XD).
She is super loving and supportive, and I love her. And we’ve now been together (as bf/gf) over a month. I asked her out September 23rd. And the other thing is that we past September 30th.
I posted Week 0 on September 23rd, 2013. (I’m a computer programmer. We usually start at 0, ok? XD).
So, it’s the 4-year anniversary of my blog. I feel like I didn’t make mention of the 3-year last year. Linda, please check my posts and updates around this time last year to see if I mentioned it. Linda: You’re not the boss of me. Well, I mean you are, but I don’t listen to you. *eats more rocky road while pogo sticking down a water slide (that can’t be safe)* Ok, then. Um.. never mind, it’s fine, Linda, the strange child that you are.
Anyway, the main thing is that I have now been doing this 4 years. I know it’s not like I consistently pump out a post each week, and lately every other week hasn’t been feasible. Linda: Haha, Weekly.. BUT I am so much less stressed and I’ve been getting more from school, so it’s a good thing. AND I’ve shared so much J-pop with you guys, and I LOVE it! I really love sharing something that I really care about with you guys. And I look forward to sharing more with you guys. So, until next time.
Ongaku wa saikou! Minna, gokitai kudasai! (which means “Everyone, please stay tuned!” I adapted it from Rurouni Kenshin) Ja ne!

Mirror Talk
I was chasing green onions. At a small ramen (noodle) shop having only an L-shaped counter, I was trying to catch with a china spoon the last green onions floating in the soup. As I looked up, two women in the left-rear of the shop found me and said “Hi, Mr. Watanabe.” They were the serving ladies of an inn. On business, I was staying at an old-fashioned inn called “Taiyo Ryokan” located in an arcade in Yamaguchi City. It had been almost three weeks since I checked in. After work, I always went to a little Japanese style pub, and sometimes stopped at this ramen shop afterwards. “Mr. Watanabe,” One of the ladies began, “Do you remember last night...?” “You came back very late at night and went directly up to your second floor room. After a while, I heard a few people talking and laughing. Since I thought you might have brought guests, I came up to serve tea. You seem to have enjoyed your conversation so much that you didn’t respond to my call. So, I opened the shoji screen a little bit.” “Then...” “You were talking all alone with a mirror.”

Day 4: Autumn
Tumblr media
Both Mary and Tsuzura are fond of the season of autumn! 🍁 🍂
They find the cool temperatures, crisp air, and colorful leaves that cover Japan in red, orange, and yellow to be refreshing and wonderful.
The two visit nature spots, attend food events to savor sweet potatos and mochi, take numerous day trips, warm up with hot pot dishes, shop for cute sweaters and scarves, and gaze up at the harvest moon at night.

Day 5: Departure
Tumblr media
Mary and Tsuzura once embarked on a train journey around Japan together.
As soon as the train left the station, their trip began.
While riding, they saw the countryside, viewed city sites, and observed landscapes, attractions, capitals, and nature.
...
Mary's yellow eyes glowed with ease as she looked out the train window while resting her elbow on the ledge as she and Tsuzura made their way home at sunset.
Suddenly, the blonde feels something bump against her shoulder and turns to see Tsuzuru sleeping next to her.
A soft smile forms on her lips as her gaze returns outside.

Day 2: Dates
Tumblr media
Tsumary (Tsuzura x Mary) dates are always cute and wholesome!
They frequent cafes, cake shops, arcades, hot springs, and love shrines.
Wherever they go, the girls always have a great time together, and Mary always ensures that they both take selfies at every location they visit, so that the world can see just how happy Mary is to have a super cute girlfriend like Tsuzura in her life.

Day 6: Halloween
Tumblr media
For Halloween, Mary would dress up as a vampire while Tsuzura would dress up as a witch.
I can imagine them wearing those costumes in two official art pieces.
In the first official art piece, Mary and Tsuzura are both smiling at the camera while holding trick-or-treat buckets that are filled with candy and gambling cards (Mary's treat bag is shaped like a bat while Tsuzura's is shaped like a witch's cauldron).
In the second official art piece, Mary is holding Tsuzura in a dip and seductively licking her lips while looking down at her with the intent of suckling her blood, while Tsuzura is blushing like crazy as she returns the gaze.

Day 3: Fairytale / Animal Au
Tumblr media
Tsuzura has a habit of visualizing herself as a princess and Mary as her charming prince in her mind.
Princess Tsuzura is always given love and affection by Prince Mary, who takes her to the ball where they share a sweet dance, rescues her from monsters and dragons, and protects her from any harm.
One time, at the academy (in the real world), Tsuzura had dropped her pencil by accident.
When Mary went to retrieve it, Tsuzura had a vision of Prince Mary getting down on one knee with a ring, which caused her to nearly faint.
For an au involving animals, I can see Mary and Tsuzura getting after-school jobs at a pet store where they bond with the animals there and share adorable moments with them.
The entire au is later revealed to be a shipping fic being written by Yukimi on her laptop while she's sick in bed.
