The Valiant Red Peony : Red Peony Gambler (1968)
Set during the Meiji era, RED PEONY GAMBLER stars Fuji as Ryuko Yano, the daughter of a gambler. When her father is murdered, Ryuko takes on a new name derived from the crimson flower tattooed on her shoulder – “Oryu, the Red Peony” – and sets out for revenge.
One thing I noticed about Japanese films is the use of flower names to reflect their character like in Shogun (2024) and Yae no Sakura (2013). Here, Red Peonies are flowers that can live over 100 years and thrive in cold winters, indicating that she survived the worst.
youtube
As mentioned in my earlier post, Asian films like Japanese films have always featured strong women who are feminine, gentle and caring with those they love and care but fearless, cunning, steadfast and a force to be reckoned with, against enemies.
There are numerous films such as this, Lady Snowblood (1973), Crimson Bat : The Blind Swordswoman (1969), Undercover Geisha (2003) & Ichi (2008), and anime such as Carried by the Wind: Tsukikage Ran (2000), Joran : The Princess of Snow and Blood (2021) & Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku (2023).
They inspire Hollywood shows like Kill Bill (2003), Blue Eye Samurai (2003) and Shogun (2024). Japanese films are underrated, especially the old ones that I feel it's wasted that most of these shows are not available on global mainstream sites for the world to enjoy and appreciate. But it's good to see people becoming aware of them.

Could you give us some examples of tropes that Madoka used that have been done in past?
Gladly. There might be some stuff missing but here's what I could pull out of my brain:
Mentor Mascot that turns out to be evil: Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne. It's later revealed that Finn Fish, Maron's mentor, is an agent of Satan;
Magical Contract: CardCaptor Sakura. Kinomoto Sakura's summoning sequences mention a contractual order: I, Sakura, command you under our contract!;
Magical Girl with a Gun: On the earliest drafts of Sailor Moon, Usagi was supposed to have a gun (but it was later given to Chibiusa), Wedding Peach had a gun, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt had 1/3 of its MCs have a gun;
Magical Girl Jeanne D'Arc: Again, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne. Kusakabe Maron is the reincarnation of Jeanne D'Arc;
Christianity: Fujiwara Zakuro/Mew Zakuro is Protestant, Hino Rei/Sailor Mars attends an all-girls' catholic school (though she's a Shinto Priestess), Kusakabe Maron/K.K.Jeanne is blessed by God, Haneoka Meimi/Saint Tail attends a catholic school and recieves intel from a trainee nun, Yamabuki Inori/Cure Pine implements her faith in her magic attacks and quotes;
Worldwide Magical Girls: Taken up to a galactic scale in Sailor Stars. It is implied that ther are other Sailor Senshi out there in space, and only women can be Sailor Senshi;
Human souls manifested as gemstones: Sailor Moon S had the Pure Heart Crystals, and the series in general had the Silver Crystal that belonged to the titular heroine (and was SHATTERED in Promise of the Rose);
Magical Girl that kills people: Tsukino Usagi/Sailor Moon kills Prof. Tomoe in the manga/Crystal S3, and the Outer Senshi (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) have attempted to murder his daughter, Tomoe Hotaru, to prevent the Apocalypse;
Magical Girl that FUCKING DIES: Minky Momo. Her transformation item is destroyed and she dies by being ran over by a truck. It has even brought up the rumor of an earthquake-related curse;
Lesbian MG willing to sacrifice the entire world for their beloved: Again, Sailor Moon, with Kaioh Michiru/Sailor Neptune once saying that "a world without Haruka isn't one worth saving";
Monsters born out of people's sadness and insecurities: HeartCatch PreCure. The Desertrians are born from a person's wiltering Heart Flower;
Magical Girl Goddess: HeartCatch's Mugen Silhouette has debuted two months or so before Madokami did;
Magical Girl Goddess ascension: Phantasm Soldier Valis. Ahso Yuuko forfeits her humanity in the end of Valis III, and no one remembers her as a result;
Magical Girl with PTSD: Tsukikage Yuri/Cure Moonlight was unable to transform and fight due to the immense grief of losing her fairy Cologne, Tsukino Usagi/Sailor Moon has witnessed her partners dying on multiple occasions and has developed martyrical tendencies as a result where she would sacrifice herself to stop the threat;
Magical Girl that bends the villain's rules to escape the narrative: Princess Tutu. 'Nuff said.

gotta talk about this so spoilers for heartcatch precure
Mrs. Tsukikage never found out what happened to her missing husband. She never knew he was alive and actively helping a bunch of aliens against his own will. That he died as a result, while his daughter watched. But yuri likely never told her, so she'd never know what happened

alrighttt finished the first 4 eps and i have thoughts.
first off ayumaya starting out strong with the whole pantomime scene, ayumi is so whipped i'm cackling.....the way that's contrasted with maya being rlly doubtful of her abilities and comparing herself to ayumi?? girl does not know (also this feels very freylise-coded)
on a more serious note, maya's mom is...ouch. she keeps flipflopping between wanting to support her and being ashamed of her daughter for literally existing. especially with the way she often calls maya useless and whatnot, like your daughter is trying her best not her fault you don't support her!! yeah she gets into her head a lot but that is on you for shaming her instead of trying to understand!! the one time maya gave you a chance to redeem yourself with the school play, you blew it. yikes. tsukikage bless you for taking maya in
speaking of tsukikage, a bit of a negative nitpick so far (don't get me wrong i still like this show overall), i know they explained why tsukikage had to burn maya's old clothes, and technically maya did choose to run away, but i still have mixed feelings on that decision. on one hand, maya's home life with her mom was not good for her so i get why tsukikage wouldn't want maya to be tempted to go back to that environment, but also i think maya's desire to study under tsukikage outweighs her missing home so it still felt a bit "what?" to me
oh god why do they play romantic cue music when maya's with the director guy. nonononononononono please i know this was 2005 but we are not going to go there. are we? are we????? save me ayumaya this is levels of comphet that i never thought were possible. aside from the other obvious elephant in the room ugh
glass mask live thread!
after seeing fanart for it on twt i got sucked into the black hole and now i need to know what the deal is with these theatre sapphics
this'll be for the 2005 glass mask / glass no kamen ova, putting it under gm liveposting
let me just start off by saying that maya kitajima is actually terrifying, she seems airheaded yet has the willpower to swim in actual freezing waters for a ticket. insane behavior i love her already

(see post below)
Meet Tsukikage Fujiyoru!
He’s a dumbass. I love him. (And you should too. /lh)
Tsukikage comes from a rather short line of demon slayers, starting from his great-great grandparents. It’s either the eldest son or daughter who has to carry on the legacy. Tsukikage is the second youngest child. Since the eldest sister of the Fujiyoru family died, he, as the eldest son, had to fill in her role to become a demon slayer.
His name is written Tsuki (月) and Kage (影). His mother named him that because he was born on a lunar eclipse. Coincidentally, he is a night owl and likes watching the stars.
Tsukikage is an emotionally mature person, but can never seem to get how people are feeling until they outright tell him. He has a habit of overthinking past and future social interactions and has a fear that he said something wrong.
He has a huge protective instinct, something he’s gained over the course of time he’s been a demon slayer, and the time he’s spent around the Rengoku siblings.
His family moved out of the place where his sister died (because a local priest came over there and said it was unclean) and moved near the place the Rengoku family lived. (They were able to afford being there because his grandma was a former Hashira, and as we know, Hashiras get paid as much as they want)
The first friend he made when he arrived was Senjuro, and by extent, Kyojuro. Shinjuro and Tsukikage absolutely despise each other and cannot stand being around the other.
Tsukikage’s opinions on the pillars, assuming they have all met.
Tomioka: He’s very quiet. I want to approach him and ask about his swordsmanship, but he’s so intimidating!
Himejima: He’s incredibly tall, and we’re both sensitive. I try not to put him off.
Iguro: He’s so MEAN! But… I can tell… he’s a good person. Kaburamaru scares me.
Uzui: It seems like his vocabulary is limited. He’s very loud, and I like his headband.
Tokito: I was starstruck when I first met him! His presence makes me feel safe for some reason, but at the same time he makes my head spin.
Rengoku: Sen’s big bro! His swordsmanship is a spectacle to behold! He’s so cool!
Shinazugawa: Sh*thead. Dirtbag. What other insults can I throw against him? I don’t like the way he treats his brother.
Kocho: She’s so pretty! She’s polite and has this intimidating air around her.
Kanroji: My master’s “girlfriend”. I love her so much! Master sometimes invites her to train with us!
(did I mention Tsukikage is Obanai’s tsuguko?)

Weird question maybe, but do you think Noda is trying to set up Sugimoto and Asirpa as a couple? I’m RLLY hoping he isn’t, but with Asirpa having a hinted crush, and this last chapter talking about “joined hearts” or something, I’m worried Sugimoto and Asirpa might become a couple :(
Well...
I genuinely don’t know and since I’m STRONGLY AGAINST THIS I fear I’m not really the best person at whom to ask hoping in an objective answer.
As who read my ramblings probably already knows, I’m in the camp of those who hope Sugimoto will go back to Umeko (and I hope for him she’ll take him back, although she’s not obliged to do so) and that believes his bond with Asirpa, due to the respective problems had turned into a toxic relation so it wouldn’t be okay for them to become a couple, not even if Asirpa were of the same age as Sugimoto... and the idea of them getting together is even worse considering Asirpa is actually so young... so that it kind of makes me furious when instead the anime seems to ‘romanticize’ it, or underline it, often at the expenses of Asirpa’s other relations (with her father, Shiraishi, Ogata...) or even her lack of belief in prophecies and dreams.
Still, I can try my best to give my two cents about it in the most objective and respectful of other cultures I can manage. Forgive me if I might fail but this is something I’m really passionate against so it’s not really easy for me to keep distance.
Also warning for adult topics which might make people uncomfortable.
Read at your own risk.
Something I’m confident enough and that I feel is based on an objective enough belief is that, if Noda were to consider planning to make them a couple, it wouldn’t happen right now but the story would just have a timeskip and then we would be told that years has gone by, Asirpa has grown up and they’re a couple now.
Why am I confident it can’t happen right now?
I know there are debates in the net about which is Asirpa’s age (just so you know she’s hinted to be 12/13 but my personal bet is she’s 12 at the start of the story) and if the culture of the time would allow her to get a man and how important is to be historically accurate or how historical accuracy should be tossed away when it involves something we find morally repulsive, or, and this is more important but few mention it, physically and psychologically harmful for the child involved.
Said this, my personal belief is that Noda wanted to be as historically accurate as possible and yet tell us, without any shade of doubt, that Asirpa was currently off limits and Sugimoto (or anyone else) wouldn’t look at her like that through the gold hunt.
How?
Asirpa is drawn as a prepubescent girl, which means when Noda draws her he avoid drawing her with developed secondary sex characteristics (in the specific case breasts and hips).
Tumblr media
The majority of heterosexual men from all around the world and from all around the times are drawn to females who have developed secondary sex characteristics.
Currently the number of men who are instead drawn to prepubescent real life females is estimated to be lower than 5% among adult men and those men are the ones who, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, are considered suffering of the pedophilic disorder.
In the far past, even when it was allowed marrying prepubescent girls because selling off a daughter, no matter her age, was an easy way to make allegiance, in many cultures the marriage wouldn’t be expected to be consumed until the girl was pubescent.
That’s because not only the husbands weren’t turned on by their child brides, but also because, even if in the past they couldn’t work out how psychologically harmful it would be for a child to be forced in a sexual situation, they had, at least, managed to work out it would be physically harmful... so not only you would considered abnormal if you were to do it, but there were cultures in which it was actually forbidden to touch a girl who hadn’t hit puberty even if you were legally married to her.
So really, there’s no way whatsoever Noda drew Asirpa that way, only to have the main character, who’s supposed to be a good guy who cares about her, be attracted to her.
Even a drunk Ushiyama, who normally tries to hit on every female in sight Inkarmat included and can be rather forceful tells Asirpa she has to grow up before picking a man.
Tumblr media
Long story short, there’s no point in searching if in Japan, in that time period, a girl of Asirpa’s age was allowed to get married or not, as long as Asirpa looks prepubescent we know Sugimoto, who’s AGAIN supposed to be what we would call a good guy, is SURELY not meant to do so much as consider to touch her.
That’s why Huci can tell Sugimoto to marry Asirpa without meaning any harm to her, because she expects him not to touch her until she’s physically ready because, as said before, in the past girls got sadly married at way too young ages, often withou people bothering to ask for their consent (or the one of the husband as he too often was ‘married off’ by his family) but husbands weren’t expected nor interested in having their ways with them immediately.
And that’s also why, since Sugimoto just can’t see Asirpa as that kind of partner and they’re not in a situation in which they need to marry for some reasons (marriage was also used as a tool back then, we saw how Svetlana was told to marry so that this would allow her to get out of prison and how Wilk married Riratte and, due to this, got Japanese citizenship, while others would use it to get economical protection or other things), I’m confident there will be no marriage between the two of them in 1908, the year in which we currently are in GK or becoming a couple or whatever.
They’re just partners in the gold hunt, he’s just not meant to be interested in her physically nor in need to tie her to himself legally through marriage so for now I like to think nothing will happen between them.
So, long story short, many of us who’re against Asirpa and Sugimoto becoming a couple, can have a collective breath of relief at least as far as the story remains in this year, as I’m pretty confident Sugimoto isn’t meant to like her like that right now.
Said all this... nothing stops Noda, as I said before, to have a flash forward to when Asirpa will reach puberty and, likely, also adult age and AT THIS POINT have Sugimoto fall for her at that point.
We see how Umeko’s mom is all happy at the prospect of a man of more than 40 marrying her likely around 24 daughter (I assume she’s around Sugimoto’s age) so no one in the story will question if a 24 Asirpa were to marry a 36 Sugimoto and there are various stories in which the story starts with the man in the couple just viewing the female as a mere child to then develop genuine feelings of love for her when she grows up (one of the most famous manga in the genre is “Glass no Kamen” in which Maya is 13 when the story starts and Masumi is 11 years older than her... and an even bigger age gap there was probably between her teacher Tsukikage Chigusa and her lover and mentor Ozaki Ichiren).
So to sum it up... I’m confident that Asirpa and Sugimoto won’t become a couple right now... but I can’t say if Noda is setting them up to become a couple in the far future.
For that we can only wait and see.
Sorry if I’m not really trying to make a prediction on what could happen in a flash forward but I fear I wouldn’t be capable to be objective since I’m currently so against it.
Also sorry if I had to touch pretty uncomfortable topics when answering, or I explained them poorly but I thought they were relevant and I didn’t really know how to put them better.
Thanks for your ask and sorry if my reply came late.

Hakuoki Drama Shinsengumi Oni-tan Track 2 Translation
well... finally got around to finishing ssl’s harada’s cross short stories... been super sleepy this week... which doesn't help with me being swamped with stuff to study since i finally booked the exam for the aws course im taking... it’ll be a month and half before I can resume my normal pace for all things... that is assuming I’m still stuck at home doing nothing aside from looking for a job. oh well. lol. im in the health>everything category... stay safe people!
anyway, this is my translation of Shinsengumi Oni-tan track 2! according to the drama info page, I believe this is the very first audio drama that either Amagiri’s or Shinaranui’s VA participated in tho i can’t remember who it was... however, this cd is definitely both VAs’ first appearance in a Hakuoki drama.
due to content of this, out of all the dramas i have TL for, i’ve wanted this translated the most... unfortunately since all i got for resources are images and a video of the translation, it’s a serious pain in my ass to translate it since my CH word recognition ability is very bad...
well, no pain no gain as they say... though i think i suffer way more than what i get back in return lol. finals edits will be done later when i get to making my subtitle video (delayed due to me being busy).
anyway, enjoy~!!!!
do not repost elsewhere or else!
Hakuoki Drama CD: Shinsengumi Oni-tan Track 2: A Letter from the Yase
Translation by KumoriYami
Shiranui: Ah~ahah~ really, this is turning out to be a real hassle. hey, Amagiri, have you read this letter?
Amagiri: Yes, I've already checked it. Having received a letter from the Yase princess, I was contemplating on what should be done next.
Shiranui: Then, what's to be done [what do you plan on doing?]. Do you intend to/Should we tell Kazama about this? If it's anything related to that guy, it'll be even more troublesome.
Amagiri: I don't blame your way of thinking, but because he is the leader of the western clans, there's no choice but to inform him of this.
Shiranui: Mah~ na.
Kazama: Amagiri, you've come.
Shiranui: oh, you're finally here.
Kazama: Shiranui. Why are you here?
Amagiri: His presence today is owed to oni relations.
Kazama: What business do you have. If there's nothing, hurry up and go.
Shiranui: mah, mah, quit being so inflexible. Compared to that, what's the matter with you. I just had nothing important to do so I went out. Were you checking on that girl's condition/situation [check for Kazama in audio here]?
Kazama: Of course. My wife has constantly been mistreated by those wild dogs. To check on her situation is my/the duty/obligation as a/of the husband.
Shiranui: I was only joking. However you actually did that./You actually went [check audio for if sounds like a question]?
Amagiri: I'll be asking this just in case, [but] you didn't forcefully touch her/come into contact with her right?
Kazama: Hmph, how could that possibly happen. As long as my wife sees me, she will graciously cheer aloud [roughly says: thankfully cheer for (me). reword later?]. So today I only watched her from a distance.
Shiranui: You should really learn how to distinguish/what the difference between screaming and cheering is.
Amagiri: Observing from a distance, this type of activity is still not appropriate as a leader.
Kazama: The next time I'd like to prepare glasses to watch her from a distance [or maybe: something to watch her from a distance. the version i used for this translation says glasses.... check other tl later since im assuming this to be binoculars/telescope], but I won't be talking about that now. Instead of that, there's something you should know.
Shiranui: Ah? It's not going to be something boring again right?
Kazama: It can be considered boring/simple/ can't be considered complicated, in a sense.  This was something that just happened after I encountered the Shinsengumi recently on my way back. I don't know why, [but] among that pack of dogs, [there seems] to be someone who's inherited the blood of the oni.
Shiranui: Eh... Amagiri: Hmm
Kazama: What's with that response? That reaction, are the two of you thinking that I'm an idiot?
Amagiri: No. We didn't mean to imply that, but how could that be?
Shiranuui: To confirm then, you saw an oni that wasn't Kodo's daughter?
Kazama: They're unrelated to my wife, I saw a young man, it's impossible for me to mistaken the characteristic [not sure if this is more of the 'mistaken in what i saw' sense or unable to be mistaken in this' kind of sense. check other tl after], he must have inherited the blood of the oni.
Shiranui: It turns out it was like that. Indeed, this can be considered simple/not complicated. Actually, this was sent/delivered recently.
Kazama: What is it, that letter.
Amagiri: Nn. This was from the oni living in Kyoto, Princess Yase's envoy delievered it.
Kazama: Huh. Is that woman finally going to bow down before me?
Shiranui: Why do you immediately imagine that.
Kazama: Then, don't be surprised otherwise [roughly says something to the effect of 'don't leave a man's appetite in suspense' so i put down what i thought made more sense. double check both tls later], hurry up and read the letter.
Shiranui:......."To Amagiri, Shiranui, also Kazama" Ah, by the way I added that in because it doesn't make sense [to not do so], [though] this letter was mainly directed towards me and Amagiri [check other tl later].
Kazama:......By the way [check audio and other tl], Shiranui. Are you deliberately adding in details while reading this to make this more interesting [literally: to add oil and vinegar, which figuratively means: 'adding details while telling a story (to make it more interesting)']?
Shiranui: Don't use such unpleasant words, that's basically how it reads.
Kazama: Che, it seems that Kyoto's oni do not know much about manners/etiquette. It seems that oni princess has inherited that lunacy of her ancestor [the translation of "血肿," used here means hematoma/swelling of soft tissue due internal hemorrhage... so I put in what I kinda thought was appropriate given the time period]. How laughable [check other tl. i’d guess ‘amusing’ though].
Amagiri: Can I continue reading this? [continue with this]
Kazama: Ah... Hurry up continue reading. What's wrong with that guy [check tl]?
Amagiri: "then before I get to the main point, I will first say, if you're still coveting Kodo's daughter, you should give up," she said.
Kazama: That's ridiculous.
Amagiri: It seems that the Yase Princess is speculating that, she [that girl] is fond of someone in the Shinsengumi. Perhaps it's he harsh/strict and strong Hijikata... or perhaps it’s Okita or Saito, who are excellent swordsmen/have superior swordsmanship. Of course, it's possible that it's Todou or Harada, since it's hard to guess/determine who it might be [reword later].
Kazama: That's utter nonsense/what a load of nonsense [check audio. the tl is the same where it says 'that's ridiculous']! Get to the point.
Shiranui: Really, you're impulsive as ever. Anyway, it says that a different clan [while i use the word 'clan' here, and most of the other times i see the word '族', it can also mean race/nationality/ethnicity/social group (ex - office workers). may use "group" since it's more ambiguous when I get to making the video] of oni entered Kyoto not so long ago.
Kazama: Oh? there are [other] oni in Kyoto? Where are these oni from?
Amagiri: Based on their whereabouts, they should have come from the west [says 'western part' so i might change this to 'from western lands']. So if we know something, That's why she's saying that if we know something, to please tell her.
Kazama: So it's like that/that is to say, the person I saw recently in the Shinsengumi, is the someone who probably comes from an oni clan fro a different part of the country, as mentioned in this letter.
Amagiri: That is very likely. Although Kyoto has long history, the bloodlines of many oni clans are around here/in the area. [may just omit bloodlines entirely here]
Shiranui: Joining the Shinsengumi, that sounds impossible/Then joining the Shinsengumi is even more impossible [check other tl and audio]. Then as the leader of the Western clans, do you have any idea/know anything about this oni clan?
Kazama: No/I don't know, at least I have never been in contact with them.
Amagiri: Then I'll contact the village to investigate [check tl again since the tl i wrote says 'fight'. probably wrote something down incorrectly]. How do you intend to handle this unidentified oni clan?
Shiranui: The Shinsengumi being involved in this, already makes this a real hassle. If that guy becomes a member of the Shinsengumi, we'll be fighting sooner or later.
Amagiri: Did he know that the Shinsengumi is hostile towards us, or did he know that there's a female oni within the Shinsengumi?
Shiranui: Either way it's a problem.
Kazama: hrn...
Shiranui: I'll first say, that even if it's me, I don't want to fight against another oni. There are a barely any of us to begin with/ There aren't a lot of us to begin with.
Amagiri: Then, what should be done, Kazama.
Kazama: That remains to be seen. let's go. Amagiri. Shiranui. Based on my observations, I'm afraid that the strength of his bloodline is so weak that he doesn't even know that he is an oni. Those who have inherited the noble blood of the oni, even if they don't know it, answering to the call of humans [check other tl], is something that must never be allowed.
----------
ah i wish i could have someone reading a letter from sen about why saito is better than kazama lol....hahaha i can only wish.
unfortunately im still really busy so i don’t when i’ll be able to translate the next track of this... still would like to have it done before end of the year though.
also, the reason why the sanan tsukikage chapter TLs were taken down from that blog i found was apparently because the site itself had problems with the images that were uploaded along with the author’s translations... i think?
Well, regardless of the reason, i was able to save the tl of sanan’s 1st tsukikage chapter since it got re-posted, and guess that means it’s only a matter of time before the tl of chapter 6 gets re-uploaded so i can go save it later....

chapter 6: play date at Kinako's house
so yes, it will be a play date at Kinako's house but not just for Kinako, but for everyone. E v e r y o n e. So enjoy this next chapter while your here! (your basically here for the story anyways why did i say that???)
tw: swearing (1 word), emojis, @buse, yelling, kids/siblings
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kinako just picked up everyone from school (so im now changing the days of school to australian version bc its easier) since it was the last day. The schools weren't far walks from each other. Everyone arrived at home and everyone asked if they could have their friends over tomorrow. Since it was the holidays, Kinako said yes and Kai was going to have a playdate tomorrow as well. Kinako also thought it would be fun to bring Saika, Aori and Jien, too.
The first day of the holidays came and Kinako woke to the sound of a doorbell. She got out of bed and went to the front door. There were 10 people, not including an adult, that were waiting outside.
"Uhhh... What's going on?" Kinako asked.
"Everyone says their here for a playdate." Saika chuckled.
"I'll just leave Wakaba here for you guys." said a woman. It was the mother of Kai's friend.
"Okay. Bye Miss. Chou!" Kinako waved goodbye at Wakaba's mother and picked him up. "Well uh... come inside? I guess?"
Everyone walked in and all of Kinako's siblings came out to meet their friend. Kinako picked up Kai as well and took them both to Kai's room which was also his play room. It was now only Kinako, Saika, Aori and Jien in the living room. They had no idea what to do so they went to Kinako's room. The only room that had no noise was Reiya's because she was practicing her bass guitar in her room with her friend. The other kids were just playing games or talking about things they shared.
The older teens played some truth or dare. They didn't play any other games like spin the bottle because, duh, they all were taken by someone in the circle.
"Aori my beloved, truth or dare?" Jien asked.
"Dare. Haha good luck finding a good dare."
"I dare you to let me go through your phone pictures."
"Fuck!"
Aori handed his boyfriend his phone and Jien went through every picture in every file until he stopped at the last file. It read 'My Beloved' Jien looked at Aori and smirked. He clicked on the file and saw a bunch of saved photos and taken pictures of Jien. There were pictures of Jien shirtless, doing a cute face, him with Aori or Jien with cute filters. Jien chuckled about it and Aori blushed then snatched his phone back. Jien giggled and saw the 2 girls taking pictures.
After a couple of rounds of truth or dare, they all went to the kitchen to make some food. Aori and Jien served the food and Saika and Kinako went to get the kids. Kinako knocked lightly on the twins' door and opened it to see them both hugging their 'friends' arm.
"I-" Kinako was shocked but also confused. "Okay. 1. Come eat food. 2. Is she really your friend or above that? And 3. Why are both of you hugging her?"
"T-this is just a close friend! That's all... hehe." Ichisaki whispered tugging at their friend's shirt.
"And Tsukikage is a boy. He looks like a girl and..." Kisaki continued, he paused for a bit and did some quick little emoji drawings in a notebook.

They all used emoji drawings to communicate when they had a secret or something. Kinako knew that the twins' friend Tsukikage was forced to become a girl by his mother.
"They have known me for a while and both like to hug me and stay close to me, that's all!" Tsukikage chuckled.
"I'm sorry, by the way for assuming you were a girl." Kinako apologized in humiliation.
"Hehe it's fine!"
"Well come eat because we're all waiting for you. And you 2, I will speak to later.", she pointed 2 fingers at her eyes and turned them to the twins' eyes as a warning, but not so much as a warning.
The whole table was crowded. There were 15 people. 2 toddlers, 2 pre-teens, 5 who just turned teens, 2 teens, and 4 young adults. The kids ate at the table and the older teens ate in the lounge room. There was so much dishes to wash.
"Why didn't you tell me about your relationship with Tsukikage? Are you guys dating him or-?" Kinako asked as she warned before.
"Well not exactly dating." , Ichisaki corrected, "We're just... friends."
"Hehe... Not exactly dating? What does that mean?" Tsukikage came out of the boys' room with a smile on his face.
Tsukikage was pretty popular at his school with the boys. He specifically chose to become friends with the twins for a reason. He may be a tall kid that looks 16 who are friends with 2 short twins who look 8 but they all get along so well they all practically know each other fully.
"Nothing!" Both twins spoke fast at the same time and turned their heads blushing.
'Soooooo... they're bisexual? I guess? Best not to think because I accidentally assumed a gender...' Kinako thought. She assumed they were bisexual because they were talking about a girl they met who was pretty a couple weeks ago when school started.
"Just next time tell me that you guys have a crush, doesn't matter what, gender or no gender." Kinako said calmly.
Both of the boys started to yell at her for saying that Tsukikage was their crush. She just walked back to her room and sat with her beloved Saika on her bed.
"What happened?" Saika asked because of the yelling outside.
"Just sorted out a few things with the twins. Kai and Wakaba should be going to bed now. You wanna help?"
Saika nodded and went with Kinako to a room where Kai and Wakaba played and looking a bit tired. The 2 girls put both toddlers to bed reading stories narrated by Kinako and lullabies sung by Saika. Kinako was also caught up in Saika's beautiful singing that even he fell asleep.
Thankfully, Kinako was very light. So Saika carried Kinako to her room and placed her on her bed again. Aori and Jien saw and left the room to watch some T.V on the couch. Saika laid down next to her girlfriend and had a small nap.
(here is what all the kids are doing btw:
Arisu and their friend, Kimu, studied in their room and then talked about some people at school. (not talking anything bad in case ur wondering, the 2 r just saying about some nice things about others)
Reiya and her friend, Hibina were, as mentioned before, practicing their music.
The twins and Tsukikage were playing some Mario Kart.
Kai and Wakaba were sleeping.
Tsubaki and her friend, Reiju, were working on a school project about animals.)
Saika and Kinako woke up to a small ringtone coming from a phone. Saika's mother, Rimi, called to come over for dinner and said to bring her as many friends as she wants, if she wishes. Aori and Jien were invited by her mother so they would be going. Ms. Rimi knew about Aori and Jien's relationship and was a bit disgusted but invited them anyways so she could be seen as a nice person. Saika decided she'd invite Kinako.
"B-but I can't!" Kinako exclaimed, "I need someone to look after my siblings..."
"Don't worry!" Saika touched Kinako's upper arm and rubbed it, "I know a very good friend who is very good with kids because she owns one of the best babysitter companies here."
"Really? Thank you!" Kinako was glad because her girlfriend just saved her life.
The rest of the day finished and everyone went home. Wakaba's mum picked him up from the playdate and left. That was such a long day. Now everyone was cleaning their rooms from their playdate.

Carried by the Wind: Tsukikage Ran Fan Cast
If they decide to do a live action anime, I’d love to see Haruka Ayase as the female ronin, Tsukikage Ran and Mei Nagano as her goofy side-kick. 😀
Haruka Ayase was awesome in Taiga Drama Yae No Sakura, playing a musket-woman and as Ichi, the daughter of the blind swordsman, Zatoichi.
Mei Nagano was hilarious in police drama, Hakozume: Tatakau! Koban Joshi and she’s the first person that comes to mind watching this anime.

Naruto OCS???? Do tell us about them
oh now youve got me started!
i made a post about their history (very general) in this post so ill talk more about their personalities and things that stand out about them cuz i love them
so the tldr is that they’re an off shoot of the uchiha clan from the first great ninja war when yokumo fucked straight off from konoha due to 75% paranoia that turned to 99% paranoia when he left but cant go back now! hed be a rogue nin! so he settles down in the land of grass with Asaro the most best girl character ive ever made. She’s a tailor/seamstress/weaver in this tiny village and she just radiates chill, shes been your mom friend since grade 2 and will continue to be your mom friend until death
yokumo is Stressed and Strict because my dude has the sharingan so when they have three kids (not at the same time hot damn) he decides like any good parent to just refuse to let them use their eye powers at all (note: this is probably not a good parenting tecnique)
tenjo is the oldest daughter and she idolizes her dad so fucking much dude and shes fighty, boy pulls her hair and gets an ass whopping , shes the queen of the village kids but with different leading skills than her mom. she legit saw yokumo use jutsu ONCE and went “oh hell yeah time to be ninja”
yokumo said no
jiyuro is the middle kid and he just vibes dude, hes a normal easy going kid that reaps the reward of being the sibling of the queen of kids, hes also the kind of bastard that can and will use his sharingan to cheat in exams, something he can only pull of thanks to the babiest brother 30 under 30 ninja luminary chiban who cant use the sharingan but damn is that boy neck deep in genjutsu training
chiban put like all his dnd leveling towards genjutsu and some taijutsu so he wouldnt mcfucking die in the middle of a fight in the event that his genjutsu fails. his illusions are amazing tho and real specialised, he can make you believe that those eyes? those red eyes with weird dots in em? yeah totally normal, you didnt see shit. the same with cuts and bruises, dude specialices in detailed genjutsu instead of haha you got caught in a plant or some of the other ridiculus shit naruto characters do
now tenjo gets married not once, not thrice but two times, first time to your local imported bitch boy hatsunaio ha’ame whos playing the longest con in existance aka he “falls in love” with tenjo and gets married, has a kid, all so he can confirm that the clan has the sharingan to report back to konoha cuz that aint right, sharingan outside of konoha and even more sharingan outside a hidden village
fear not tought! imported asshoe gets killed by tenjo with the sweet loot of the mangekyou sharingan and Trauma!
her second marrage is 4-5 years later with drinker of respecting woman juice Tsumashin Aishika who had been a family friend since a bit after ha’ame got what was coming to him. Aishika is super patient and just Kind Man, if only he was stupid and buff he would be a himbo but he’s average and kinda smart so Good Dad will have to do. He likes to read and is a wood worker.
Tenjos kids are a fucking story too, btw hope you wanted a long long post cuz youve really gotten me started now
Renge, the kid she had with Ha’ame, is the oldest and she doesnt remember her dad at all, shes been called a clone of her mom with the fightyness and the “wow cool! need to learn that!” reaction to jutsu. Shes impulsive if shes on her own and the worlds biggest glass canon in a fight because she has trash chakra stores and the impatience to skip on learning to distrobute it properly, she also has the vibration style kekkei genkai (lightning + wind) which just eats up her chakra
first kid with Aishika is Hotoki whos like her mom but EXTREME, shes the naruto of the kadzuki fam, impatient, a brat and ready to throw down instantly, shes stubborn as fuck and she wants to be the Tsukikage, a position that doesnt exist for a village that doesnt exist in a land that already has a hidden village. her family is supportive tho
last kid is Makuto whos one of only three kids in this clan thats youngler than naruto. his life starts of great by killing his mom with complications during birth giving him absolutly no problems down the road, nope, haha. Hes pretty reserved and likes his grandmas craft better than his grand dads so he takes up tailoring and later pottery, hes a fast learner 100% because of the sharingan
then we have jiyuros wife Pantama Hoshi, shes friend shaped and radiates chill like asaro. they met while team one (aka tenjo, jiyuro and chiban) was out at another town for a mission. shes a gardener and grows medicinal herbs along with real good flowers. theyre by far the most calm parents in the family and basically became foster parents for Tenjos kids once she died so yes, they have two dads. Hoshi can and will support you in anything thats not plain out stupid
Jiyuros first kid is Nishi whos good and cautious, shes the single kid in the budding team 2 that thinks things through properly before doing something, but too much, shes a pesemist, and probably has anxiety, on the upside all of the plans shes involved with goes without a hitch because she provides endless “what if bad thing happens” scenarios, in the downside plans take so much longer because of said what ifs, she specialises in sealing and summoning but really really wants to be a medical ninja because you see what if someone gets hirt! what if renge becomes dumb bitch during a mission and gets hurt because shes a glass canon
the second kid is Takuhi whos the mediating voice of reason that pushes Renge to listen to what ifs and makes Nishi remember that sometimes improv is whats needed during a mission, hes on the cautious until proover otherwise side. He hangs out with Yokumo a lot and is slowly inhereting his paranoia and or world waryness
TIME FOR MY FAVE BRANCH
Chibans family is amazing because i love them, his wife Yamatora Seiho, usually called by her last name, is an ex shinobi from the land of grass (she freaked Tenjo out a bunch after the Ha’ame bullshit went down) thats just so fucking done with the kage and government so she went to do that good good farming cottage core life but shes really not suited for it. shes ready to throw the fuck down at any time but shes also kind to her kids and real serious
she also had a previous marrage that ended in good ol murder (not her killing her husband for once in this clans history) but basically she took her at the time 5 y/o son Usagi with her and Chiban said fuck it join the family instantly
Usagi feels so fucking left out tho cuz he wants to be included in the playing the other kids do but he cant manage to care about that whole ninja thing plus he doesnt have eye powers and just why bother, so instead he goes to Asaro and asks her to be his teacher, he also becomes a barber in the town because my god did Jiyuro really just almost cut his sons ear off???
THEN THE TWINS!!
Hikame and Yorukoi are twin girls and the other two that’re younger than naruto in the clan, theyre 9 when hes 12. They spend their time usually together or with Hotoki and Makoto since Usagi is 13 years older than them and Renge, Nishi and Takuhi are team 2 on missions a lot. Yorukoi really loves animals and looks up to Nishi because holy shit mom she can summon animals with only a lil blood holy fuck meanwhile Hikame likes art and drawing the aimals Yurokoi comes sprinting home to tell everyone she found
The twins and Hotoki will make up Team 3 just as soon as Yokumo lets them because oops a few years ago the whole konoha branch of the uchiha got fucking annihilated and we might be next.com

The Tale of The Gallant Jiraiya

A long time ago, there existed an evil giant snake spirit that preyed on humans. This demonic snake spirit had ambitions to gain power over all of Japan.
For that to happen, it decided to take control of the influential Tsukikage clan, whose feudal domain was Echigo province. Their leader – Tsukikage Gunryo Miyukinosuke – was also the regent of the Shogunate (feudal government of Japan) and crucial to the evil snake’s plan.
The Giant Snake Spirit takes over the Tsukikage Clan
On that fateful day, the snake spirit attacked Lord Tsukikage Miyukinosuke. Had it not been for Orochimaru who came out of nowhere to intervene, the lord of Echigo and regent would have died.
Therefore, out of indebtedness, Lord Miyukinosuke adopted Orochimaru as a son. This was a huge mistake for it sealed the fate of the Tsukikage, Ogata and Matsuura clans.
Unbeknownst to Lord Miyukinosuke, the demonic snake spirit had possessed Orochimaru and he was merely a puppet from the start. The snake spirit and Orochimaru had staged the attack and rescue. And the lord of Echigo effectively adopted the evil snake into his clan.
Over time, the snake manipulated the lord into murdering all of his offspring, leaving Orochimaru as his sole successor.
Massacre of the Ogata & Matsuura clans
The Ogata and Matsuura clans held two powerful seals (i.e. insignia stamps) in trust for the feudal government. Documents marked by these seals were proof of the Shogun’s support to raise an army and navy fleet.
The giant snake spirit wanted the power afforded by those seals, and needed the two powerful clans out of the way.
As a result, Lord Miyukinosuke first led the shogunate into believing that their allies were staging a coup. He then tricked the two clans into giving up their seals before obliterating them. His forces then threw the infants Jiraiya and Tsunade down the cliff, thereby eliminating the two respective successors of the Ogata and Matsura.
Luckily, a hermit by the name of Senso Dojin saved and raised them.
Training Jiraiya & Tsunade to defeat Orochimaru
Determined to avenge their clans and restore the tarnished honour, Senso Dojin began to train Jiraiya and Tsunade respectively in shape-shifting magic of the toad and slug.
However, the three-way deadlock was a problem. Snake magic surpassed toad magic; toad magic surpassed slug magic; slug magic could defeat snake magic. The key to defeating Orochimaru, was to use the Nakirimaru sword (wave-cutting sword).
First Battle against Orochimaru
In their first battle, Orochimaru fought and severely wounded Jiraiya. Fortunately, Tsunade arrived in time and saved Jiraiya with her prodigious used of slug magic. While he escaped death, the wounds were serious enough to disable Jiraiya.
The only antidote was the blood of a maiden who was born in the year, day and hour of the snake.
A Sister’s Sacrifice to Save Her Brother
Jiraiya and Tsunade continued their search for the sword. As they entered the Echigo province, they met Ayame of all people, the adoptive daughter of the Tsukikage clan.
Jiraiya then made a surprising discovery that Ayame was his sister (spared during the clan’s massacre).
Realising that she was the maiden born in the year of the snake, she stabbed herself as a sacrifice to save her brother. Her blood was the antidote. And with her sacrifice, she ensured that Jiraiya and Tsunade could take revenge and reinstate the two clans.
Jiraiya was fully healed.
Defeating Orochimaru
Years pass when both Jiraiya and Tsunade finally found the Nakimaru (wave-cutting sword) at Hell Valley.
Together they cornered Orochimaru with the sword and exorcised the demonic spirit. The misunderstanding over the Ogata and Matsura clan was cleared. And the Shogunate reinstated their clans.
Since the demonic snake was exorcised, Orochimaru was no longer possessed. He was pardoned for his crimes at Jiraiya’s request to the Shogun.

My OC, Mitsubachi Kurokami, from my Pokemon Conquest fic: Birth of a Warlord! I've been meaning to upload a picture of her for a while, and this is the best one of her I've done! Hand-drawn, and colored in with a combination of marker and colored pencil, with some slight digital editing in photoshop. Here's some basic info about her: Name: Mitsubachi Kurokami Age: 18 Kingdom: Yaksha Family: Koroko Kurokami (mother); Mako Kurokami (father); Kiku Kurokami (little sister) Friends: Rin Kurenai; Keitatsuo; Yuuki Rengu Warrior: ? Power: ? Wisdom: ? Charisma: ? Pokemon: None Type Specialty: None Description: Eldest daughter of the infamous Kurokami family. Due to her family's ill-gotten reputation, she is rarely seen. When she makes an appearance in Yaksha's capital city, she is always hidden under long hooded cloaks. Mitsubachi is a very quiet and introverted young woman, who rarely speaks with other people outside of a small group of friends in the city. She has some artistic talent, often journeying to the surrounding forests and swamps to sketch the Pokemon that live there. Curiously, she always seems to show up just before the famous singer Tsukikage gives a show...
I’ve also posted this picture to my DeviantArt. Eventually I might post some art exclusively there, so feel free to check me out over there as well!

HeartCatch!: Greek Pantheon
More Greek gods! Honestly, I think I did these girls first before everyone else because their one of my favorites (and the easiest) but anyway.
Today we have Hanasaki Tsubomi/Cure Blossom, Kurumi Erika/Cure Marine, Myoudouin Itsuki/Cure Sunshine, Tsukikage Yuri/Cure Moonlight, Hanasaki Kaoruko/Cure Flower and Dark Pretty Cure.
(Note: I’m adding Cure Flower and Dark Pretty Cure too because I love them so much. I don’t think I matched Cure Flower’s parentage too well, but I’m sticking with it anyway.)
Tsubomi was a child of Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, fertility, and the harvest. She named her Anthos (Ανθος) [Blossom] and witnessed Persephone’s kidnapping by Hades, her future brother-in-law.
Erika was one of Poseidon’s children and lived in the sea alongside her immortal siblings. She was named Thalássia (θαλάσσια) [Marine].
Itsuki was called Liakáda (Λιακάδα) [Sunshine] and was the daughter of Apollo, the god of the sun and music. In my headcanon, she lived in Troy during the time of its fall (the Trojan War). Her father gave her her tambourine.
Yuri was one of the 50 children of Selene and Endymion. Her name was  Selinófoto (Σεληνόφωτο) [Moonlight].
Kaoruko was one of Tsubomi’s friends in their past lives and was close to her. As the daughter of Thea, the titan of light, she was called Louloúdi (Λουλούδι) [Flower]. She wished to live with Tsubomi in her next life so she could watch over her.
Dark Pretty Cure was the daughter of Nyx, the goddess of the night and was called Skotádi (Σκοτάδι) [Dark].
Happy Holidays! Up next: Suite! (And more Greek demigoddesses!)

Idol Precure Series: A Gratuitous Costume Parade
Because that is literally what this is. An excuse to dress everyone up in cute clothes.
Not complaining, though. The girls look fabulous~
Anyways, y’all aware they were grouped together because of what their civilian identities have in common, right?
Well, that’s how I see it so I typed this up so I can use it for reference later.
Initially, it was just a companion (?) piece to this StarPre prediction post (therefore, the StarPre girls haven’t been included yet so go check out that post until they are) but now I’ll come back to edit/update it again when more new stuff is released or I find better quality pictures.
I also have some ideas for possible new groups if they ever add or mix-and-switch the current ones but that’ll be on another post altogether to avoid confusing myself, ahaha~
Tumblr media
Anata no kokoro o mitoshi-tai (Team “I see through your heart”)
Members: Yukishiro Honoka, Hanasaki Tsubomi, Tsukikage Yuri, Shirabe Ako, Yakushiji Saaya
At a glance, it seems like they put all the smart ones together but it’s really because these girls all wear glasses.
Yep, the meganekko group.
I mean, they are smart but the key point here is clearly the glasses. Which is a tad bit of a shame because I feel like that (moe aspect) takes away from recognizing them for their intelligence first.
On another note, interestingly enough, I believe there’s a play on words with their unit name. If you say it out loud without knowing the context, it really sounds like “I want to look into your heart”. Can someone confirm this? My amateur Japanese isn’t enough to explain it eloquently.
Others who can fit into this group: Hishikawa Rikka
Tumblr media
Bunbu Ranbu (”Martial Dance”)
Members: Myoudouin Itsuki, Aoki Reika, Yotsuba Alice, Hikawa Iona
Martial arts practitioners.
Also, I’m pretty sure Reika knows some kendo along with kyūdō since we’ve seen her wielding a giant ice sword as Cure Beauty multiple times throughout the franchise. We just didn’t see her do it in civilian form. Hmm. :/
Others who can fit into this group: ...
Tumblr media
Eternal Moment
Members: Higashi Setsuna (Eas), Akagi Towa (Twilight)
Former villainesses who turned good and became a main heroine.
I’m so glad they didn’t forget about their evil alter-egos cuz Eas and Twilight (or perhaps just Twilight) can be considered separate characters in their own rights so it’s nice to see them show up in advertisement again every once in a while.
Hmmm, their name though... it looks like this unit might only be intended for two people (”Eternal” for Towa and “Moment” for “Setsuna”).
That is, unless they add onto it like HNMH (see below) if they plan to include more girls into this category. If so, then...
Others who can fit into this group: Kurokawa Ellen, Lulu Amour
Tumblr media
Mystic Diva
Members: Kurokawa Ellen, Kenzaki Makoto
Haresora Concerto (”Clear Sky Concerto”)
Members: Minazuki Karen, Hojo Hibiki
Haresora Concerto with Mystic Diva (collab?)
Additional members: Tategami Aoi
Girls with strong affiliation to music...I think?
We saw Karen playing the violin in Yes!5 Precure’s OP and her parents are famous musicians themselves (just like Hibiki’s) but I can’t recall if she ever played any instrument during any particular episode in Yes! 5 or Gogo(?). Anyways...
Mystic Diva contains those who are renowned singers from another world (I don’t think Ellen sang much after she sorta permanently remained in human form but as Siren, she was one of the top contenders next to Hummy to sing the Melody of Happiness so there’s that).
Haresora Concerto obviously are for those who practice classical instruments.
Finally, the collaboration...is it a collaboration or did they really merge the two units together? If not, then Aoi will still need to be assigned to a group and if we’re going by the above criteria, she doesn’t fit into either one (Mystic Diva isn’t really her style anyway and she’s long given up the violin to play the guitar).
Maybe they’ll come up with another unit specifically focused on the rock genre in the future cuz we have Emiru and Lulu now so that’ll be enough to start one.
Others who can fit into Mystic Diva: Lulu Amour (+ guitar) [??]
Granted, Lulu didn’t sing before she arrived in present day Hugtto but she did say she’s going to bring music back to the future so...why not count that and the future as “another world”, hmm?
Others who can fit into Haresora Concerto: Yotsuba Alice (piano), Haruno Haruka (violin), Akagi Towa (violin), Kaidou Minami (violin) [??]
I don’t really associate Minami with music even though she is skilled at playing the violin. It’s just that compared to Towa and Haruka where the violin played a significant part in their story arcs, Minami and the violin is more secondary (pfft, not even) to her connection with the sea. But then again...Karen is in this group so I dunno :S
Did I forget anyone else who plays a classical instrument? I feel like I’m missing someone...
Others who can join the collab: Everyone listed above + Kasugano Urara (singing), Aisaki Emiru (singing, piano, violin and guitar)
Tumblr media
Haruka Nozomu Mirai no Hana (”Wishing for the Flower of the Far Off Future”)
Members: Yumehara Nozomi, Haruno Haruka, Asahina Mirai, Nono Hana
The dream chasers.
And by far, the unit I find the most aesthetically pleasing. ^^
Also, I feel like some people would try to argue that Mirai “didn’t have a goal and therefore, she doesn’t belong in this group” so as she is my beloved daughter, I need to make them eat the dirt of their WRONGNESS.
Because MahoPre’s epilogue obviously showed her trying to find a way to reunite with Riko and Ha-chan, aka bring their two worlds together again, so that definitely counts as her dream (not to mention, the most ambitious one out of everybody else’s in this group). Furthermore, if you actually watched MahoPre more closely, you would know her dream of the two worlds coming together came to her gradually rather than happening at a particular moment and was solidified after she had to separate from her team after the Big Boss fight in the finale.
And you know what? Her wish was fulfilled in the end so y’all can suck it. :P
Others who can fit into this group: ...
Tumblr media
Home Maid
Members: Kujo Hikari, Minamino Kanade, Madoka Aguri, Omori Yuko, Usami Ichika, Arisugawa Himari
Cooking or maybe, more accurately, sweets enthusiasts? *makes side eye at Aguri*
Well, besides that, they also either helped out at a restaurant or provided a service that had something to do with food (tea ceremony in Aguri’s case).
Hence, the “maid” part, I guess...
...but if so, then this is a poster for a maid cafe, not an idol unit! :P
Others who can fit into this group: Hyuuga Saki (family runs a bakery) [?], Akimoto Komachi (family runs a Japanese confectionery shop) [?], Hino Akane (family runs an okonomiyaki restaurant) [?], Haruno Haruka (family runs a Japanese confectionery restaurant) [?], Kotozume Yukari (learned from her grandmother how to perform tea ceremonies) [?], Kirahoshi Ciel (owns her own sweets restaurant), Nono Hana (grandparents ran a Japanese confectionery shop)
With the exception of Ciel, a lot of “?” cases here because similar to the Karen/Minami in Haresora Concerto, their main interests don’t particularly lie in cuisine and most of them never stated any intention of carrying on their family business. So it’s really up to whether you want them in this unit or not. Personally, I think Home Maid has enough members already so...
Oh and Hana was crossed off the list since she became the president of her own company at the end of Hugtto.
Tumblr media
M.V.P.
Members: Misumi Nagisa, Hyuuga Saki, Natsuki Rin, Hino Akane, Midorikawa Nao
This one’s self-explanatory. Athletes. Sporty types.
Not much else to say.
Others who can fit into this group: Hojo Hibiki, Kagayaki Homare (?)
Yes, while Homare does participate in a sport, singles figure skating is mostly an individual event so the MVP title can’t really be applied to her. I guess that was the reasoning behind why she wasn’t placed in this group even though that’s what she’s most known for.
Tumblr media
Osha-Revolution
Members: Kurumi Erika, Shirayuki Hime, Kagayaki Homare
The fashionistas!
This is my most favorite idol unit name out of all the others not only because it sounds like the most cleverly thought out but also because just hearing the word “revolution” gets the legendary Utena Revolution OP playing in my head again. *jams to the beat*
Thankfully, it’s got no connection to this idol series cuz *GAAASP*......*whispers* no.
Anyways, I’m glad it’s universally agreed upon that Erika and Hime would get along like five runways crisscrossing simultaneously at Fashion Week. Adding Homare to this lineup is appropriate because she’s always being complimented for dressing so stylishly.
Also, having someone as tall as her stand in between Erika and Hime like a giraffe hanging between two Hyacinth Macaws, lol is really...picture perfect.
Others who can fit into this group: ...
Tumblr media
Secret Lives
Members: Mimino Kurumi, Hanami Kotoha, Kirahoshi Ciel
Mascots who can transform and became one of the main heroines in their respective seasons.
I like their aesthetic, too. Even though they give off cute vibes as much as any of the other idol groups, there’s still a “mystery” air about them.
Others who can fit into this group: Kurokawa Ellen (?)
Ermmm...Ellen was a mascot but she wasn’t aligned with the good side in the beginning. And after she became a Cure, she didn’t revert back to cat form again... *shrug*
Tumblr media
Soushi⇄Souai (”Mutual Love with Creativity”)
Members: Mishou Mai, Akimoto Komachi, Hoshizora Miyuki, Kise Yayoi
Those whose strongest weapon is the pen (or brush) in their hand. Or something like that? I was trying to go for something more artful but I guess not. :P
This group’s name gave me a little trouble in translating but I think what I settled for in the end gets the idea across well enough. They love creating so much that they’ll be rewarded in kind with lots of inspiration.
...which sounds a bit unfair for everyone else suffering creative blocks but okay.
Others who can fit into this group: Nono Hana
Tumblr media
Triple Heart
Members: Momozono Love, Aida Mana, Aino Megumi
The love-obsessed.
Not much else to say here either.
Others who can fit into this group: ...
Tumblr media
Up to Me
Members: Aono Miki, Izayoi Riko, Kotozume Yukari
The Ladies.
At least that’s what I like to think them as. “Up to Me” gives off the impression of a very decisive person. Along with how mature they act, these girls fit that description to their own special degrees.
Like, Miki is very focused on her modeling career and confident she’ll go far, Riko has good work ethic and always aims for her goals and Yukari is, well, good at almost everything and is also a very “my pace” kind of woman.
...they all have purple hair, too, so I’m wondering if that’s another prerequisite for being added to this unit.
Others who can fit into this group: Tsukikage Yuri, Kenzaki Makoto (?)
Yuri would fit in no problem but Makoto I’m still teetering back and forth on...
Tumblr media
Urara*Kirara
Members: Kasugano Urara, Amanogawa Kirara
Ra♪Raa♪Raaa♪Raaaa♪Raaaaa♪ Suīto Suīto Puri-Kyu=AH♪
Girls who aspire for the stage (acting and signing for Urara and modeling for Kirara) and have “-rara” in their names.
If that’s the case here, guess this is another unit meant for anyone who fits those limited criteria. Otherwise...
Others who can fit into this group: Aono Miki (modeling), Kenzaki Makoto (singing)
Tumblr media
White Coat Angels

Those with a future in medicine.
But Minami...hmm, well, though it was never clearly stated what her profession was (I don’t think?) when she grew up, she could’ve gone on to become a wildlife veterinarian after she achieved her degree in marine biology so yea, she counts.

Twin Love

Pretty damn sure the first one was made specially just for KiraPre. No other girls sport blatant animal imagery on them. Plus, there’s no point in including anymore members than how many this group already has.
As for Twin Love, it’s a canon idol pair unit in Hugtto. Adding anyone else in it would not make it “Twin” Love anymore.
So that leaves the question of where Emiru and Lulu will go in the next series, I guess. Though I’m sure they’ll stick together wherever they’re assigned.

Did anyone else think that “Side B” also stood for “Side Boys” before Dark Party was released? (And yes, I know what a B-side track is so you don’t have to tell me)
Anyways, Royal Road is obviously for the prince characters (though I don’t think they really needed to add Ouji-senpai since he’s just a minor recurring character, not supporting but whatever) and Fairy Five is for the younger male mascots who can transform.
Others who can fit into Royal Road: Prince Zeke, Wakamiya Henri, Aisaki Masato (?)
If Dark Dream can join an idol unit despite being a movie-only character, then I don’t see why they can’t integrate Prince Zeke into this unit as well. All that matters is how popular or memorable he was in HaCha’s movie because everyone who was picked out for Side B had to have had an impact on the audience one way or another. But at least Zeke makes more sense than Ouji-senpai.
Henri needs no explanation as he is the “Prince of the Ice” but if you want a prince to accompany his occasional “princess” role, including Masato wouldn’t be a bad idea. Though I still think Masato’s more of a knight than a prince.
Others who can fit into Fairy Five: Kuroro (?)
Granted, Kuroro only got a human form by combining powers with Lock in the final battle of Go!Pri and hasn’t technically earned it yet since he only begun fairy training when the season ended...but if he can, why not?

“The Enemy Boys” ...more like “School Infiltrators” since they were the few among villains to pose as students in order to get closer to the Cures.
Off-White consists of bishounen villains who eventually came around to understanding and siding with the good side. Which explains the “off white” part, I guess, since it wasn’t an immediate reform for them but a more gradual one that needed a lot of persuasion and thinking.

Dark Party

Legendary Heroes is clearly a parody of the Precure franchise itself but since we already grew out of those jokes thanks to Hugtto, I’m hoping I won’t see any updates for this group ever again. And I will be absolutely livid if they dare to put Cure Infini in this unit because that is not funny.
Dark Party needs no extensive explanation as they were former nemesis/rivals to the Cures who never really got a “good” form even after their Heel-Face Turn (Dark Precure didn’t even get one of these). Which is fine because that’s essentially their charm. What makes dark magical girls so appealing is how awesome they are even when they’re “evil”.
Also gotta love the gothic lolita clothes that a number of them usually wear. If they didn’t keep Side B separate from Side A, I totally would’ve liked to put Eas and Twilight in this group as well.

Valentine’s Chocolates and Glass Masks
Tumblr media
The romance genre in anime is a little weird, and honestly on the whole the majority of the genre in anime is probably a bit too slow for its own good. “Will they or won’t they” is something most romantic fiction is guilty of, but I think you’d be hard press to come across 150 episode TV series dedicated solely to that premise anywhere else. And this has nothing on the pure silliness that can come with the genre; hand holding, indirect kisses, masked secret admirers, all that good stuff. Really, I’m not here to trash talk romantic anime though, but as I sat down and tried to think about writing a Valentine's Day blog post I just couldn't help but think to myself how romance anime might be the hardest to explain to anyone not in the fandom. I mean, I think I’d have an easier time explaining the plot of any given saga in DBZ than I would explaining “Notice me, senpai” to somebody.
You know what though, I kind of ironically enjoy all of this. Yeah, pure romance anime can be cheesy, but it’s just the right amount cheese that it’s like, c’mon, how can you not enjoy this? Perhaps the worst (or best!) offender of this are older shoujo titles where they can seem almost downright like a soap opera at times. Shows like these are just so full of bizarre, off-the-walls, and over-the-top melodrama that they manage to suck me completely in. They’re heartbreaking, they’re engaging, and the times when they fail at being those things they are hilarious.
My most recent experience with an older shoujo title like this would have to be studio Eiken’s 1984 adaptation of Glass Mask. Now Glass Mask (or Glass no Kamen as it is known by some) is a manga that started life in 1976 and to this day has yet to be finished, with the manga creator Suzue Miuchi stating she would like to finish it soon, but hasn't quite figured out when that will be (move over Hunter x Hunter fans). Having been one of the earlier shoujo titles starting back in the mid-70’s the series is full to the brim with pretty much every cliche and trope you can think of for shoujo anime, and to a modern audience it can often be almost hilarious at times to sit through. It is important to remember that for its time Glass Mask was a trend-setter and arguably if not the creator than certainly the reason why a lot of these cliches became cliches in the first place. Over the years Glass Mask has received its fair share of adaptations and even parodies, and currently has 3 different animes as well as a live action drama series and real life stage plays based on it. I heard the most recent anime, the 2005 TMS adaptation of Glass Mask, does a pretty great job at modernizing several aspects of the series, but unfortunately I have yet to watch that to weigh in so all I can say is that I was inundated with more cliches than I could count and laughed a ton while watching the 1984 series and I loved every minute of it.
Tumblr media
Glass Mask is the story of a young 13 year old girl Maya Kitajima, who has a dream to be a great theatre actress. Unfortunately for Maya she’s from a very poor family, and even more unfortunately for her, she is incredibly average looking with no flair--and don’t worry, the anime will remind you of that fact countless times every episode. Despite her damnable curse of “just looking kind of average” Maya will stop at nothing to pursue her dream and eventually runs away from home after getting a scholarship for an acting school. There, the enigmatic Chigusa Tsukikage notices Maya’s talents and takes her on as her protege. Soon, Maya learns that her mentor Tsukikage was once a legendary actress thought to be truly one of the all time greats who due to a tragic Phantom of the Opera style accident had her face hideously scarred and retreated out of the spotlight.
Tsukikage is looking to pass on her talents to the future generation and eventually pass on her greatest possession, the rights to the elusive Crimson Goddess play--a supposed legendary masterpiece that has not been seen by anyone in decades; not since Tsukikage’s career ruining accident. For some reason the director and creator of the the Crimson Goddess play saw it fit to beseech all the rights to his masterpiece to Tsukikage and thus nobody else has been able to produce this elusive phantom play since. It won’t be easy for Maya and the Tsukikage acting school, as media conglomerate and mega corporation Daito Entertainment will stop at nothing to get the rights to the Crimson Goddess, and isn't afraid to sabotage them at every step of the way. Perhaps Maya’s greatest rival however is the young Ayumi Himekawa, the daughter of an already famous actress who is said to be the favorite to inherit the Crimson Goddess role, and is everything Maya isn't; beautiful, rich, famous and well loved by all, and while not a student of Tsukikage she is more than willing to pass on the rights to Himekawa if Maya fails to prove herself.
It’s easy to already see the cheesiness just from me trying my best to summarize the basic plot, and we haven’t even gotten into the romances yet. Maya’s relationship with the young Yu Sakurakoji is fairly simple at first, as he helped rescue her from a feral dog and despite being in rival acting schools--one affiliated under Daito no less, he’s a pretty chill guy that enjoys spending time with her and doesn't care about all that stuff. It’s only after Maya starts to take off in her career that Sakurakoji starts to spiral into this insane inferiority complex centered around her, where he thinks she has become too good an actress for him to be around anymore and starts to give her the cold shoulder all because of his own make-believe shortcomings. It’s very odd and sudden, and the entire thing is blown out of proportions as Maya clearly does not think that and Sakurakoji eventually has to be lectured by bad boy Masumi of all people to come around and start spending time with Maya again. Even after this however it isn't like the old days anymore and the gap that was created from his own complex still lingers.
Tumblr media
And oh boy, don’t get me started on Masumi, he’s quite the character. Masumi Hayami is the 24 year old son of the president of Daito Entertainment and is currently running the corporation in his father’s stead. Masumi serves as both an antagonist and love interest (because of course he can be both) in the early parts of the story and is often behind some (but not all) the sabotage done to Tsukikage’s acting school. Masumi will eventually take a more reasonable approach when it comes to trying to yank the rights of the Crimson Goddess away from Tsukikage’s hands as the anime progresses, often just by having his acting school beating Tsukikage’s students in contest and the like, and it’s here where we usually see Masumi’s employees that work under him being the more underhanded characters instead of Masumi directly engaging in the conflict.
Despite being on different sides, so to speak, Masumi catches one of Maya’s earliest performances, her role as Beth in Little Women, and falls in love with the young girl, impressed by both her potential as an actress and her fortitude for going on with the show despite suffering from a dangerously high fever and immediately being rushed to the doctors after the curtains fall. From this point on her takes the role of “Mr Purple Rose” named for the bouquet of purple roses he sends to her at every show. As her secret admirer and the first fan Maya has ever had he means a lot to her yet as his true identity of Masumi he’s an enemy that Maya cannot stand to breathe the same air as. So in short, Masumi is just your average 24 year old CEO of a mega corporation crushing on a 13 year old girl from a small acting school he is trying to ruin and also her secret admirer. Somehow Masumi is one of the best characters in the series, and is my best boy. Only in shoujo!

So far I've been having some cheap laughs at the expense of the 1984 Glass Mask anime but it’s not all like this. The over-the-top bombardment of old school shoujo cliches and the laughs I got from them may be one of the most memorable component of my viewing but there’s actually a lot more to this anime than that. When you get beyond the silly age gap romances and the flowery melodrama of young teenage love, Glass Mask is a story of artists trying to pursue their passions and dedicating their everything to them. Maya may be cursed to forever be “only average looking” but I really respect her drive to dedicate her entire life to theatre.
Well, that is to say, the times when she isn't acting like punching bag to the rest of the cast (Glass Mask has a tendency to make Maya into a Cinderella surrounded by tons of wicked stepsisters). When Maya is written not as a Cinderella she’s fiercely determined, and never backs down despite some straight-up abusive behavior she is put through. At times her mentor Tsukikage is absolutely savage, regularly beating Maya and putting her through some training that is definitely highly illegal, at least for today’s standards. For instance she once threw Maya in a shed and locked the door refusing to let her out until she finally understood her character she was assigned. Did I mention it was in the middle of the freezing cold winter and snowing out and Maya only had the clothes on her back for warmth? She was out there for days with no food, water, or even warmth. But don’t worry, she had her script to read and that made it all okay. Like goddamn, somebody call child protective services on this lady.

Speaking about “the art” and everyone’s passions, the more you watch the series the more it becomes obvious that the creator, Suzue Miuchi, really cares for theatre and isn't just using it as a vehicle to propel her own story. There are countless renditions of classic plays shown in Glass Mask, such as the mentioned already Little Women, The Miracle Worker, and Wuthering Heights, just to name a few. Some of these plays are presented without any changes while others may have reinterpretations made to them by the characters who are trying to give their roles a life of their own away from the original source material. Miuchi very much understands theatre and does a great job converting many famous plays into a more compressed and easily digestible form of entertainment that can be viewed on a week by week bases. The analysis characters give about the plays and other characters’ performances, the ways characters interpret their parts, and how the plays that we are privy to see in the series end up all show a deeper understanding of the medium. Watching Glass Mask is almost like taking a beginning course in theatre that covers all the classics, only with way more melodrama and over-the-top romance than you will find in your local theatre group. I hope.
What’s the most impressive however goes beyond just Miuchi’s renditions of other classic works and instead are her own plays that she creates herself. As not only does Glass Mask use pre-existing plays it also has its own original productions that will spring up in-between the real world plays. A lot of these self created plays are very enjoyable too, and some feel way more fleshed out than they have any right to be and you often find yourself regretting that you are only privy to a small part of the performance and not able to just sit there and watch the entire play like the characters in the anime do. Maybe that’s why it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that some of the plays Miuchi has created for her manga have later been adapted into real life plays in Japanese theatres. This is probably the greatest testament to the series’ popularity right there, where its own fictional works are turned real. I can’t think of many examples of something like that happening before.
Tumblr media
I’d be remiss not to mention the visual aspect of this series before wrapping up my thoughts on it too. While certainly no powerhouse in animation, Glass Mask 1984 goes for a more picturesque route, and does a great job with tons of beautiful still shots and intricately detailed background images. It’s a humble production but with the right use of lighting a lot of scenes can really shine (pardon the terrible pun it was an accident), especially the night shots which can be pure art. Hang it in a museum, I say. I’m almost surprised we don’t see more “aesthetic” anime blogs mining images from this series. Veteran director Gisaburo Sugii (Dororo, Touch, Osamu Tezuka’s Phoenix) leads the production with skilled marksmanship you would expect from his previous (and future) pedigree, and along with legendary animator the late Shingo Araki (Ashita no Joe, Galaxy Express 999, Saint Seiya) the series has a wonderful 80’s flair to it that just fills any retro anime fan full of nostalgia whether or not they have seen the show before.
Tumblr media
Studio Eiken’s 1984 Glass Mask adaptation is a short, briskly paced 22 episode series that is easy on the eyes and not hard at all to still sit through for modern audiences. It’s full of tons of laughs (both ironic and sincere) as well as tons of melodrama and over-the-top romance. Most importantly though, it’s a full of passion; lots and lots of passion. During its short episode count the series watches Maya progress as an actress and grow older, with her finishing middle school and beginning high school while also balancing full time acting jobs on the side. The ending is left open--and let’s face it the manga hasn't even ended some 35 years later still--but there’s enough forward momentum in the series to really feel like your time with the characters wasn't wasted and that they were able to accomplish something--not to mention the ending spot is a pretty decent one leaving the viewer wanting more but enjoying a satisfying conclusion to one of the more interesting story arcs adapted. Overall I think anyone who enjoys cheesy anime romance can sit down with this series and have a fun Valentine’s.
