Night of the Dragon

Ok, where do I even start? This book was a trip. Seriously, I honestly think more happened in this book than in the previous two books COMBINED. I must admit, though, that I started reading this book in February but then My Hero Academia happened and I spent far too much of my time and energy simping over Todoroki, Shinsou, and Amajiki. Oops. Anyways, when I did get around to reading all of the book, I wound up reading most of it in two days. It was SO GOOD and there was always something happening. I would really like to make this post spoiler free, but seeing as half the plot is spoilers…yeah, not gonna happen.

One of the things that I really loved about this book was that the events of the book happened over a course of 2 or 3 days. It meant that the book spent a lot of time on everything that happened in those days which is good because there are so many twists and turns that if it wasn’t that thorough, it would get very confusing.

Honestly, I absolutely loved reading about the night the gang spent at the Tsuki Palace. I’ve always loved reading the scenes where characters are preparing for a battle and the scenes in the Tsuki palace before the start of the battle were all about the main characters mentally preparing for the massive fight ahead. The characters were all more open about their emotions because that very well could be the last time they’d ever get to say what they wanted to say to their friends.

I think my favorite of those scenes was the one where Suki talks with Daisuke. I hated that Suki only wanted to help Daisuke while Daisuke thought she was there to make his life miserable. It made me want to scream “TELL HIM!!!” nearly every time Suki even so much as breathed (well, not-breathed, since she’s dead) in the same room as Daisuke (my autocorrect just tried to turn Daisuke into Aizaw, what the hell?)

The scene with Okame and Daisuke the night before the battle was just as flowery as expected. Naturally, I loved it. Although I do wonder if it’s some sort of running joke that Okame and Daisuke can never get any privacy. I mean first Yumeko invades Okame’s dream, then she walks in on them kissing, and now we’ve got Suki watching them be sappy.

Then the conversation between Yumeko and Kiyomi and the reveal of what happened to Yumeko was amazing. I was afraid that the separation would have formed some sort of unfixable break in their relationship but it doesn’t seem that way. Now, even though the monks are dead, Yumeko still has a family to come back to. If they don’t get killed in the battle, that is.

Then the scene with Yumeko and Tatsumi. Beautiful. I’m not used to ACTUAL real COMMUNICATION in relationships involving stoic bad boys. I guess it’s easier to say fuck it all and talk about your true feelings when you’re, like, 99.9% certain you‘ll be dead in 24 hours. Also, Yumeko using her fox illusion magic to create a forest landscape in her room. Chef’s kiss.

The battle scenes were really exciting though. I don’t know what it was about the writing but it FELT thrilling. Like, the only other time I have felt that enthralled in a battle scene was in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and considering Harry Potter is my favorite series of all time, that’s saying something. It honestly felt like I was there watching this whole thing play out.

All of the twists were crazy too. I knew it wasn’t going to be as simple as just stopping Genno, but good lord there was much more to the plot than I expected. I mean, I thought it’d be stopping Genno from getting his wish and then stopping Seigetsu from using the wish for himself but instead we get corrupted Kami, resurrected dragon spirits, and a crazed Kitsune trynna be a god.

Characters

Yumeko: Ok, since when has Yumeko been this powerful. I mean, she was always badass but this is on the next level. She really made illusions real. Also, can we take a minute to appreciate the fact that she’s so pure of heart she was able to call on the Kirin (without using the Kodoma as middlemen) and she ACTUALLY FUCKING TAMED A GENERAL OF JIGOKU?! I mean, hecking heckety heck, the sheer amount of power this girl holds.

Reika: I didn’t believe it when she died at first. Like, I read that she was hit and I was like “it’s ok, it’s not the real Reika. It’s just one of Yumeko’s illusions.” It was the real Reika. Fml. I don’t know what to think about her death scene. On the one hand, it was so heart-wrenching I literally had to take a break from reading to get through it. On the other hand, she gave a whole ass speech and there came a point where I was thinking “this is getting ridiculous, shouldn’t she be dead already?” I must say, I did love that she was true to her character even through death. She went out making sure the team knew they were idiots but that they were her idiots.

Okame: I hope this man is currently partying it up in Meido with Daisuke and his brother cause he deserves it. “Honorless Ronin Dog” my ass. The dude’s got honor and he‘s a much better person than he thinks he is. He’s also funny. Like, the characters are walking through a literal cave of despair and I’m laughing cause he made some sort of comment about potentially poisonous flowers in moaning caves.

Daisuke: I said in my last review that he reminds me of Jem Carstairs from The Infernal Devices. Well, I have found another similarity. Both Daisuke and Jem don’t just try to avoid death but go running into it head on. I mean we’ve got Jem who needs to take Yin Fen to survive so he throws some of the last of the Yin Fen supply in the fire and then we’ve got Daisuke who fucking VOLUNTEERS to fight a demon general of Jigoku which is pretty much a death sentence. And like, both of those characters spend the whole of their respective trilogies EXPECTING to die. I understand Jem because terminal illness and all that but Daisuke does not have some sort of certain death sentence hanging over him so could he at least TRY to survive? And the whole thing about meeting death completely peacefully as if everything’s ok, like, “oh yeah, I’m just dying. Nothing wrong here.” As if I’m not fucking FALLING APART reading it. I love this man, but I am angry.

Tatsumi: I read somewhere that it really says something about Tatsumi that the Kirin showed himself to Tatsumi even when he had a demon inhabiting his body and I definitely agree. As cold as he sometimes seems, Tatsumi is really a force of pure good. He was also not an emotionless wall in this book. Like, I said in an earlier review, Tatsumi isn’t one of my favorite characters, but his death was so sad. Also kind of makes me angry cause, really, was the only way to defeat the evil foxman to stab him THROUGH YOURSELF?! and why’d the book have to end before we actually see Tatsumi reincarnated and Yumeko ACTUALLY MEET?!

Suki: Man oh man. Ok, so I love this girl, but how did she not see that there was something off about Seigetsu? Like, he’s acting uncharacteristically mad and Taka is missing and you still don’t think something is off? That being said, Suki really is the MVP in this book. Like, Yumeko would be dead a thousand times over if it weren’t for Suki. Seriously, though, she’s also so relatable. I, too, would stick around as a ghost to help Daisuke.

Seigetsu: I CALLED IT!!! I knew there was something off about this man. I mean, no one ever does anything for nothing. Seigetsu had to have had a reason to pull all those strings. I can forgive him for trying to become a god, he’s a villain, that’s what he does. I cannot, however, forgive him for killing Taka.

Hakaimono: I was debating writing about him, mainly because I’m lazy and didn’t want to write that much, but I figured it was pretty important to write about him considering his obvious character development. I was pretty happy with the way his character developed, but I’m sure there are going to be some readers who are not sold on his character development because you never see any obvious signs of it until the end of the book. I wound up kind of loving his character when he was angrily helping Yumeko because “goddamnit, I’ve gone soft.” It was just kind of funny cause it was like, “I will kill you in the future“ *says while saving Yumeko’s life.*

I am entirely displeased by the ending of the Shadow of the Fox series and I love the series so much and there is a tragic lack of fic. Especially Tatsumeko fic. “Yumeko-chan, what have you done now?”

             Yumeko grinned at the slightly disapproving look on the kami’s face and placed her finger against her lips as she tucked herself in the branches of the tree. “Whatever it is Kiyomi-sama is going to hear about it sooner or later.”

             This conversation was interrupted by a wild pig running out of the hall, several gardeners and servants running after it.

             “I’m reasonably sure that Kiyomi-sama already knows about it.” Yumeko said as she climbed further up into the branches of the tree, placing her back flat against the bark. The kodama just climbs up with her, making disapproving noises. At this moment, the Moon daimyo walked out of the hall, tears of laughter still streaming from her eyes.

             “Come out, Yumeko.” Kiyomi-sama called out, causing Yumeko to press herself back against the tree further, disguising herself with kitsune magic to blend into the tree. “Or I will tell Kage-san that Yumeko is sadly unavailable and that he should—”

             Yumeko climbed out of the tree so fast that it almost looked like she dropped. “Tatsumi is here?” She asked, head flicking about, fox ears against her head.

             “Got you.” Kiyomi-sama smiled at her daughter, even as she grasped the fabric of Yumeko’s robe tightly so she couldn’t run away. “I thought you would be so distracted by wild pigs that you wouldn’t need to know that Tatsumi-kun is arriving with the Shadow Clan delegation soon.”

             She nodded to herself, a sly smile on her lips even as Yumeko’s head flicked about excitedly and her tail lashed from side to side. “I suppose you won’t be able to see Tatsumi-kun if you’re busy helping the servants clean up the mess you made in the hall.”

             “Kiyomi-sama.” Yumeko whined, even as she bowed her head in apology. Kiyomi-sama just kept smiling, even as she patted her daughter’s fox ears, now pinned back against her head in discontent.

             “If you hurry, I’m sure Hana-san will take pity on you and allow you to perform your punishment later.” Kiyomi-sama waved as her daughter took off in the direction of the hall, tail waving in the air.

              “Tatsumi.” Masao-sama approached out of the shadows. “We are reaching the port soon. You may want to return to the deck.”

             Tatsumi nodded quickly and bowed deferentially to the likely-new daimyo as he lowered himself out of the crow’s nest, feeling a flash of nostalgia as he remembered the last time he was in a crow’s nest.

             Yumeko. Tatsumi looked over at the cliffs of the Moon Clan islands and the surrounding forests.

             Masao-sama had asked him to accompany the delegation to the Moon Islands, and his heart had leapt a little at the thought of seeing Yumeko again after the years of separation immediately after the Night of the Great Dragon.

             Despite no longer being a formal part of the Kage after having joined and having later been separated from Hakaimono, he still bore Kamigoroshi and had been called to return it. Kamigoroshi had been returned to the family vault, hidden and protected by priests. Despite it no longer being inhabited by Kamigoroshi, Masao-sama had declared the curse too great and had it sealed away now that Lady Hanshou was dead.

             It was strangely lonely not to have Kamigoroshi in his hand or Hakaimono in his head, but equally, it was freeing to be able to feel as he wished and not worry about being taken over by Hakaimono. And all because of one little fox.

             The boat rocked as it reached the shore and Tatsumi disembarked, along with the rest of the Shadow Clan delegation. The official reason for the delegation was the sorting out of treaty details after the collaboration during the Night of the Great Dragon as well as a show of appreciation on the part of the Tsuki for the Kage’s sacrifice of many of their strongest warriors in defence against Genno’s forces.

             “Kage-san.” The samurai at the gate was the same one from the last time he had arrived at the islands. He nodded quickly, feeling like it was fate. But then, Yumeko had always been blessed by Tamafuku during their time together.

             “Kiyomi-sama will see you in a moment.” Their guide, a young noble of one of the major families of the Tsuki, said. He flushed slightly. “In the meantime, let the servants lead to your rooms so you can refresh yourselves.”

             The servants looked… hassled and Tatsumi kept his face calm even as he sensed Yumeko’s involvement. What mischief have you got up to now, Yumeko?

             Tatsumi thanked the servant once he reached his room, even as he went to the washbasin to wash his face from the journey. He took a deep breath, only to overhear two servants chatting as they walked past.

             “I’ve never seen Yumeko-chan so eager to apologise for a prank or so willing to accept punishment!” One servant exclaimed.

           “I heard it’s because Kiyomi-sama told her something about the Shadow Clan delegation.” The other servant said, quietly. Tatsumi reached out through the shadows, listening closely.

           “One of the kodama told me Yumeko-chan is in love with one of the Shadow Clan delegation members.” The other servant continued, excitement in her voice. “And Kiyomi-sama told her she wasn’t allowed to see the Shadow Clan delegation until after she helped Hana-san clean the hall.”

           Oh Yumeko, I’ve missed you too.

           “What did they do with the pig anyway?” The first servant asked. “Last I heard, Genma-san and Shoto-san were still chasing after it.”

           “They roped in Yumeko-chan to get it back.” The other servant said. “She was more than willing to help, apparently.”

           Tatsumi smiled as he returned to the shadows to his room.

             “Tatsumi-kun?” A servant knocked on his door. Two young women entered. “Ran-chan and I are here to help you dress to see Kiyomi-sama.”

             He looked at the haori jacket in their hands and the shining grey pants. “Can I dress myself?”

           The servant girls looked embarrassed as they exchanged glances. “Hana-san said to help you.”

           “I’m not a noble.” Tatsumi pointed out.

           “Hai.” The other servant said. “But Hana-san said that Kiyomi-sama wanted a private audience with you after…”

           “Hana-san also said not to tell him that!” The first servant elbowed the other before bowing apologetically. “I apologise for the inconvenience, my lord, but we were given our orders.”

           Tatsumi acceded, disrobing quickly, mind moving quickly. If the Moon Clan daimyo wanted to see him privately, that was either something very good or very bad for him, but he could not refuse without it being an insult.

             “Kage-san, we’re done.” The servants had been efficient in their work and bowed again as they left the room.

              Yumeko knew she looked like a mess even as she frantically apologised to the unamused head-servant, Hana-san. She had gotten the scolding of her life and then sentenced to scrubbing the hall and the pavilions outside and helping the gardeners.

             Hana-san reminds of Denga-san, she thought, even as she scrubbed the floors as quickly as she could, trying to ensure that she wasn’t going to be caught up in chores for the entire time the Shadow Clan delegation was here. A pang of sorrow filled her heart at the reminder, wondering what Master Isao would think of her now.

             Denga-san would be sharing tales with Hana-san about me, she thought wryly, as she heard sounds from afar.

             “Yumeko-chan.” Yumeko began scrubbing faster as she heard Hana-san approach. “The Shadow Clan delegation has arrived, and the hall is still not ready.”

             “Sumimasen, Hana-san.” She bowed her head apologetically, even as she kept scrubbing.

             Hana-san sighed. “Kiyomi-sama said you can finish the rest of your punishment later. She wants you dressed to greet the Shadow Clan delegation.”

             “Arigatou!” Yumeko sprang to her feet, sponge still in hand. “I promise I will finish the rest later.”

           “Just. Try not to let any more wildlife in while the Shadow Clan is here.” Hana-san said with a sigh, waving Yumeko off.

             The Shadow Clan delegation being here means that Tatsumi is here! Yumeko sprinted to her chambers, heart in her mouth. She pictured Tatsumi as she last saw him, leaving with the rest of the Kage.

             “I don’t want you to leave.” Yumeko said, face buried in the collar of Tatsumi’s haori as he held her close. In the aftermath of the Night of the Dragon, as bearer of Kamigoroshi, the Kage wanted Tatsumi to return with them, despite him relinquishing ties after being possessed by Hakaimono.

           “It’s going to be okay, Yumeko.” Tatsumi said, rubbing Yumeko’s back. He was still new to comforting others but this seemed like the right move to make. “Genno couldn’t separate us. Seigetsu couldn’t separate us. I am your sword, remember?”

           “Baka. I don’t care about strength. I just want you with me.” Yumeko cried.

           Tatsumi pulled her away briefly to kiss her. “I will return.”

           They stayed like that until sunrise, where the Kage began to make preparations to return to their own territories.

             Taking Tatsumi with them.

             Yumeko quickly let herself be bathed as she reached her quarters. She still wasn’t used to the disrobing and dressing of nobles but a year later, she was more used than she had been after she first left the Silent Winds temple.

             She was dressed in an elaborate black kimono with silver butterflies and her hair pulled up and back by combs and hairpins until she was presentable as a member of the Moon Clan court.

             And then, she was ready.

             “Kiyomi-sama will see you now.” A servant led the assembled Shadow Clan delegation to a cleaned hall, where the Moon Clan daimyo was seated.

             The Moon Clan daimyo was as regal as Tatsumi remembered. The full court was assembled around them, as the daimyo herself stood and walked down towards the delegation, bowing her head.

             “The Moon Clan cannot express our gratitude for the help the Shadow Clan provided on the Night of the Great Dragon.” The daimyo said. “The sacrifices made on that night will be remembered.”

             Masao-san stepped forward. “The Shadow Clan looks forward to its dealings with the Moon Clan.”

             Kiyomi-sama inclined her head. “As a mark of our appreciation, any reasonable request made of the Moon Clan will be granted as far as possible. Please, you must be tired from the journey to the Tsuki Islands. Take your rest and enjoy a dinner with us. We can talk about treaties in the morning.”

             “The great Tsuki daimyo’s beauty is only exceeded by her generosity.” Masao-sama said. “We would be glad to partake dinner with our gracious hosts.”

             Tatsumi figured that there would be no danger and reached through the shadows to look for Yumeko. She couldn’t be far away. Even now, he sensed light kitsune magic along the ground.

             “Honourable guests, before we begin, I must introduce my long-lost daughter, though I’m sure you will already know of her better than others might. Yumeko, come forward.”

             Tatsumi’s breath caught as his fox girl stepped forward. The light glimmered off her dark kimono and her shining eyes. The silver butterflies lining the kimono seemed to dance as she bowed to the Shadow Clan delegation.

             “I am honoured that we should meet again.” Yumeko said, in a clear, steady voice. “As the Shadow Clan was responsible for reuniting my mother and I, they have my eternal gratitude.”

             She raised her head as the greetings ensued and their eyes caught.

             For a moment, it seemed as if it was just the two of them under the moonlight, like that last night that they spent together beneath the illusory sakura trees before the battle. All he could see was his kitsune, finally within his reach again.

              Yumeko looked into Tatsumi’s bright purple eyes as she vaguely remembered the correct greetings to the Shadow Clan delegation.

             The dinner itself was elaborate and delicious, as state dinners went but for once, Yumeko was distracted from her food. Tatsumi looked every inch the lovely noble in the delegation and he was more beautiful than she remembered.

             At long last, the dinner came to a close and Yumeko was given leave to ‘go admire the moonlight in the pavilion’. She smiled up at her mother gratefully and disappeared as quickly as a fox could to the pavilion.

             “Yumeko.” She turned, a smile already on her lips, and pulled Tatsumi into a kiss. He kissed her back, just as fiercely.

             For a moment, they gazed at each other’s eyes. Tatsumi’s hand came up to brush against her cheekbone as he brushed a stray strand from her face.

             “You’re real.” She said quietly. “You’re here.”

           His mouth quirks into a smile. “I heard you’ve been getting into mischief, before suddenly becoming very repentant and volunteering to help scrub the floors.”

           She pouted. “Your sense of humour has developed.”

           “It had the chance to now that I can feel things without worry.” He kept Yumeko in his embrace, even as his smile widened. “I hear there’s a member of the Shadow Clan delegation that you’re in love with.”

             She leaned against his chest, letting his warmth surround her. “I do care for a member of the Shadow Clan delegation dearly. He’s no noble but he is… he is my strength.”

           Tatsumi kissed her again, first fiercely and then gently.

             “Kamigoroshi is being sealed in a temple, guarded by priests and supernatural guardians.” He said, when they finally stopped for breath. “I am no longer its bearer. Masao-san decided that the curse should be kept away to fade into legend.”

             “Is Masao-san now the new daimyo of the Kage?” Yumeko asked curiously, tilting her head. “I heard Lady Hanshou didn’t have any living descendants.”

             “Probably.” He shrugged. “Lord Ieseda and some of the other lords are contesting but Masao-san has the best claim.”

             He finally released Yumeko reluctantly from his embrace before following Yumeko to a tree at the edge of a pond. In the reflection, he saw gold eyes and fox ears and a bushy tail twitching back and forth.

             Yumeko leaned against him, entwining her hand in his. Slowly, her breath evened out as he watched.

             They were finally together again.

The Moon is Very Beautiful Tonight - The Love Language of the Tower of Doors

Natsume Soseki (1867 - 1916) was a Meiji era novelist and is widely regarded as one of, if not the most important and influential novelist in modern Japanese history. So prominent is Natsume’s place in Japanese history and culture that Natsume’s portrait was featured on the 1000 yen note for twenty years, from 1984 to 2004. 

Prior to becoming a writer, Natsume was a teacher, first at Matsuyama MIddle School, which would serve as inspiration for one of his most famous novels, 坊っちゃん (Botchan), and then Fifth High School in Kumamoto. 

In 1900, he was sent by the Japanese Government to study English literature in Great Britain. By all accounts, he did not enjoy his time studying abroad. Of his time spent at University Collect London, Natsume wrote; “The two years I spent in London were the most unpleasant years in my life. Among English gentlemen I lived in misery, like a poor dog that had strayed among a pack of wolves.”

However much he may have disdained it, his time in Britain was hugely influential to Natsume and his works. It engendered in him a great deal of skepticism towards the rapid Westernization of Japan. The tensions between modern Western culture and traditional Japanese sensibilities would become a recurring theme in his writings.

                                    Natsume Soseki (1867 - 1916)

After returning to Japan in 1903 but before resigning to become a full time writer in 1907, Natsume was a professor of English literature at Tokyo Imperial University. While teaching one day, Natsume overheard some of his students struggling to translate the phrase “I love you” from English into Japanese. The students settled on 我君を愛す (I love you), but Natsume took issue with the use of 愛す (aisu - love), as he felt that stating one’s feelings that openly and directly was too Western and wasn’t in keeping with Japanese culture, or what he thought Japanese culture should be. 

Instead, he suggested that “I love you” should be translated as 月が綺麗ですね (the moon is beautiful, isn’t it?). He felt that this phrase preserved the indirect, stoic nature of Japanese, as the the word for “moon” (月 - tsuki) and “like” (好き - suki) both sound the same when spoken out loud. This creates a double meaning for the phrase, stating one’s affection by hiding it in plain sight. 

Or so the story goes. Records corroborating this tale are sparse, with some of them popping up one hundred years or more after Natsume’s death. The exact phrasing of the translation also changes depending on the telling, with some versions saying that Natsume translated “I love you” to 今夜は月がとても青い (The moon is very blue tonight). 

Regardless of the veracity, the story of Natsume’s translation became part of the cultural consciousness of Japan. In 1955, enka singer Tsuzuko Sugawara released the song 月がとっても青いから (“Since the Moon is so Blue”) and 2017 saw the release of the romance anime 月がきれい (As the Moon, So Beautiful). 

“If French is the language of love, then Japanese is the language of awkward, and roundabout expressions like this one are common throughout.” Translator and editor Rei Miyasaka told me in a brief correspondence we had on the subject. Among other things, Miyasaka worked as a translator on the aforementioned As the Moon, So Beautiful anime series. “The story of Natsume’s translation, whether factual or not, is passed down essentially as a useful parable. It demonstrates a difference between Western and Japanese mannerisms.”

The Tower of Doors gamble is the apotheosis of Sayaka’s character arc and the arc of her and Kirari’s relationship. It comes when both are at their most uncertain about the other and the relationship they have, and the moon plays a pivotal role in the outcome of the gamble. 

Despite moving though the tower in a way that she thought was perfect, Sayaka still loses the gamble. When Yumeko begins to explain to a shellshocked Sayaka how she managed to beat her, she says this:

今夜は月がとっても綺麗ですね。 The moon is very beautiful tonight, isn't it?

“The phrase is definitely well-known in Japan. “ Miyasaka says. “...when this particular phrase is referenced in literature or pop culture, it’s usually with either a tacit or explicit nod to the Natsume Soseki story, usually in a discussion of Japanese people’s awkwardness and/or aesthetic sensibilities.” 

Yumeko doesn’t quite say the famous line exactly here. She adds とっても (very) and 今夜 (tonight) to it. I believe this was an intentional deviation, for two reasons. One, this is not Yumeko’s confession, she is instead calling attention to the Tower of Doors and Kirari’s intentions. And two, changing the line draws attention to what remains the same. The kanji used to describe the moon, 綺麗 (beautiful), shares the same first character as is used in Kirari’s name (綺羅莉), drawing a connection to Kirari and the moon. 

Later in her explanation, Yumeko drops any pretense of subtlety, saying:

このギャンブルのためだけに「扉の塔」は回転する！ The "Tower of Doors" rotates just for this gamble!) なんて馬鹿らしくて。 How silly/absurd/ridiculous! なんて愛らしくて。 How charming/adorable/lovely! なんてロマンテックなんでしょう！ How romantic!

The precise word Yumeko uses to describe the romanticism of the Tower of Doors is ロマンテック, which is the katakana for the english word “romantic.” Katakana is a sort of phonetic way of writing in Japanese that’s used in several different ways, including foreign loan words and emphasis, similar to italics in English. Yumeko is stressing heavily and unambiguously the romantic nature of the Tower of Doors.

When a furious and dumbstruck Sayaka retorts that Yumeko’s logic makes no sense and that the Kirari may have made the Tower rotate for no reason, both Yumeko and Kirari rebuff her:

Yumeko: まさか No way! そんなこと考えもしませんでしたよ。ここまで大掛かりな仕掛けを作っておいてギャンブルに使わないなんて。 I didn't even think about that. You can't make such a large-scale device/mechanism/gadget and not use it for gambling.

Kirari: 買い被りよ、清華。私もそこまで酔狂ではないわ。 You give me too much credit. I'm not that capricious/eccentric.

Here, Yumeko asserts, and Kirari confirms, the intentionality of the design behind the Tower of Doors. Kirari designed the Tower with the intent that the moon would reveal its secret. 

Yumeko won the Tower of Doors because she figured out the Tower’s secret. But that secret wasn’t that it rotated and that you could move from the bottom to top floor in one move. The key to the Tower was understanding Kirari’s intent when she designed it. That the Tower of Doors is a love letter to Sayaka, designed to capitalize on all of her strength in logic and reasoning, but with it’s own illogical twist layered on to. 

Sayaka failed to understand this for the same reason everyone loses to Yumeko; they become so absorbed in beating Yumeko and losing themselves in the gamble that they lose sight of the bigger picture. Sayaka was so focused on Yumeko that she failed to see the key to understanding the Tower and the symbol of Kirari’s affection for her; the moon. But it doesn’t matter in the end. Even though Sayaka lost the gamble, Kirari and Sayaka accept one another, and are brought closer, because, as Yumeko puts it, “You can’t prohibit someone from having feelings for someone else.” 

“...Japanese people love to euphemize and beat around the bush.” Miyasaka says. “...people tend not to like saying ‘I love you’ because people find it to be too forward...So quotes like this one [the moon is beautiful, isn’t it?]  might come up naturally when two people are sharing a moment...one should go no further than to express that, despite the stoicism expected of them by the other people around them, they feel safe exposing their sentimentality to this person, and that hence they love them.” 

Translation is more of an art than a science. There’s no equation that you can plug words and phrases into and have them converted cleanly into any other language because words are more than dictionary definitions. 

To translate something from one language to another while still preserving meaning requires a firm grasp not only of the mechanics of both languages, but also the cultural vocabularies of the languages as well. But even then, meaning can still be lost because the cultural contexts and codes that inform language exist outside of the words. 

The language of love that permeates the Tower of Doors is something that sadly gets, not just lost, but abandoned in translation from Japanese to English, and ends up going unnoticed, like Sayaka and the moon.
