===
The woman was pouring milk into a bowl of sugary cereal, long before the sun was predicted to rise, when the phone rang on the countertop. Tipping the carton back and fastening the cap, she then checked the caller ID and swallowed her burning heart back into her throat. That surge of heat urged her to let the phone ring, but her empathy reluctantly picked up the phone.
“Hi,” the caller's voice shook, “Would it be alright if I came over?
The woman pulled the phone from her ear to bang her fist against the counter.
“I know it’s late.”
“It’s very late.”
The caller sighed and the woman grabbed the milk to place it back into the fridge, waiting for a reply. Though, she had a pretty good guess as to what led the caller to ring her so late at night, explaining why the other side had stayed dead.
“Is he working late this time or just hanging out with some work friends this time?”
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean?”
“He didn’t tell me this time.”
The woman huffed, “Well, at least he isn’t lying to your face.”
“That isn’t helpful.”
“And seeing me would be helpful?”
The woman was aware of the secret wish that the caller would say “yes.” This is why she steeled her resolve, “You can’t keep playing with me.”
“You know it’s not like that.”
“You of all people should know why it doesn’t feel like that.”
The woman stared at her pathetic bowl of cereal, listening to the sniffles on the other line.
“I just need someone to be here for me. I feel so alone.”
“Isn’t that what he’s for?”
“Can’t you at least see that this isn’t a simple situation?”
“But it could end so easily if you just chose me!”
Grasshoppers and owls faintly filled the silence from outside her window.
“I know.”
“You don’t.”
“I can show you I do.”
“You said that last time.”
“He at least let me know he was coming home late last time. I can’t take this anymore.”
“I’m going to hang up.”
“Please don’t! I swear it’s you. I’ll tell him tomorrow, and if I don’t, I’ll never call you again.”
She shook her head and felt her strength deflate in her chest.
“I promise it. I love you.”
“I’ll see you in a bit,” and she hung up the phone then threw away the bowl.
