I have come back with an AU I had in my mind for about a year and a half. This AU has been in the back of my mind for the longest time, but I have finally decided to share it.
It will not be a full story due to my lack of skills in writing. So I will draw some scenes here and there and explain them.
Tumblr media
⚠️TW⚠️: Mention of death & character death
°
°
°
This AU takes place during the event, On the Stage of Dazzling Light, where Tsukasa, out of frustration of not being able to deliver his lines correctly, runs out of the stage that him and the others (Rui, Nene, and Emu) where at. He runs to the road without looking both ways and gets hits by a car (look, I know that's cliche-), which ends his life.
However, he wakes up and is greeted by Hatsune Miku(I imagine Miku is dressed in her Divine Goddess module from Project Diva), and she gives Tsukasa another chance at life but in return he can't go back to the real world and is forced to live in his Sekai. In addition, he also loses his memories, well, most of them. He still remembers his family.
The rushed doodle above shows him in his outfit from the event (which is the outfit he died in). The reason why there is a black transparent circle surrounding him is because once he got to the Sekai, the bright lights hurt his eyes, so at first, he toned the brightness down in the Sekai (he is the owner of it after all, meaning he can do whatever he wants with the Sekai). But later on, he made it so the Sekai looks like it was at the beginning, but made it so that the lights weren't too bright when he was around. This is because he saw the other inhabitants sad that the Sekai wasn't as colorful as it used to be, he felt bad and changed it back to how it was at the beginning.

So Help Me God, Lucky Star Is Actually Good
12 Days of Aniblogging 2024, Day 5
As someone who was hard-filtered by the choco cornet during my first attempt a decade ago, some part of me still finds it hard to accept, but I now believe Lucky Star to be a great anime. Veneration is in order.
Tumblr media
The real miracle is that I was probably watching the same upload both times. For whatever reason, Lucky Star has been on Youtube for as long as I can remember, in perfect HD quality. Unlike other anime uploads, which persist only through a widespread game of DMCA whac-a-mole, uploads of Lucky Star remain untouched, as if divinely blessed. The one caveat being that you will be watching the dub.
Some background is in order, for the archaeologists and the young. This is a “cute girls doing cute things” anime, which aired at the peak of the “moe boom” in "2007". Market forces had shifted away from the hypermasculine gorefest that was the OVA era and the psychodramas of the late 90s to early 2000s. Now the people demanded moe. Anime girls became ever more neotenic and proportionally compressed until their default designs resembled the chibi and super-deformed sketches you’d previously only see in gags and parodies. The cuteness of the characters themselves began taking absolute precedence over plot developments, as more mundane and relatable settings grew in popularity. It was a perfect storm and generated unfathomable profits for the studios willing to cash in on it. Exactly why this all happened is up in the air, and everyone you ask will have their own answer, guided in part by their own emotions. Weebs with old-school taste view the moeboom as a monstrosity that ate the entire industry for a moment there, from which it never truly recovered. Cultural critics and psychoanalysts will be sure to point out how the artists and directors were knowingly pandering to lolicons by accentuating the innocence and purity and youth of the girls through their designs and demeanors. The more business-oriented might point to how the genre lent itself to heavy merchandising through viewers developing attachment and loyalty towards specific characters, and the later success of idol anime being built directly on the backs of CGDCT.
Tumblr media
But watching Lucky Star in 2024, that's not where much of my focus goes. Mostly I’m thinking about whatever the hell is going on with Konata’s gender.
You see, Konata has all the traits of a stereotypical male otaku from this time period, transposed onto a moe girl. That’s it. It’s brilliant in its simplicity. If you’re the type of person to put on Lucky Star in the first place, it’s impossible not to feel a sense of kinship, regardless of your gender. She’s the kwasatz haderach of weebdom.
Tumblr media
Konata is the obvious star of the show, and the whole anime would fall apart pretty quickly without her. Her best friend Kagami can be fun, but her snappy personality only works because of her chemistry with Konata framing them as a comedy duo. The other two girls in the main four are kind of nothing, conceived of as helpless by design to appeal to people who are into female helplessness (I can and will judge). There’s a bit of meta charm to Miyuki because she’s being actively pedestalized as a moeblob by Konata herself, whereas Tsukasa’s whole deal can just feel downright patronizing at times.
Between calling her friends moe to their faces, dishing out otaku-based insults left and right, and emotionally leading on Kagami, Konata is a bit of a shitlord! She’s got a real dirtbag voice in the dub, which absolutely helps sell her character, especially compared to the universally shrill Japanese voice acting. It is very, very rare that I watch dubs, but I considered Lucky Star’s survival on Youtube for this long to be a sign, and it mostly paid off! It does its best to treat cross-cultural references as totally mundane which goes a long way for the atmosphere, and the casting thankfully predates the Funimation monoculture that got to dubs a few years later.
Tumblr media
Of course, in this day and age, “having the traits of a guy” more often than not means something. It’s impossible for someone like me not to want to poke. And what I propose is that Konata is a lad.
Let’s jump over to some other anime to illustrate my reasoning. One of my favorite games to play while watching CGDCT is “Which girl in this anime's main group is transgender?” It's important that this question cut both ways. Bocchi from Bocchi the Rock is something of a modern classic when it comes from transfeminine headcanons, due to her sublime mixture of hypercompetency and anxious failgirl patheticness. But I've honestly always thought that she makes more sense as a closeted transmasculine character. Hear me out. The boy band sketch, the intimidation around Ryo’s somewhat androgynous demeanor, her insistence on wearing her party outfit with a fake mustache for a liiiitle too long, until someone asks her what’s up with that and she panics…. It’s as if she views herself as a guy on some level, but has no idea how to integrate this into her psyche, and certainly does not have the mental and social acumen right now to work through it sanely. Poor Bocchi.
Tumblr media
Sometimes, you even get series like Hidamari Sketch, where my question actually has a somewhat official answer: Hiro was conceived of as a boy who wanted to be a girl. Though this idea was ultimately shot down by the mangaka's editor, it still seems like fair game to parse Hiro as a trans girl when going into the series.
But I digress. With regards to Konata’s gender, what seemed like simply a tomboy’s gap moe back in 2007 now feels like a signal that Something’s Up. We know she plays the same bishoujo games as her dad and projects onto the male protagonists. She RPs as a boy in MMOs, and in-game-marries a guy playing as a girl. Her anime taste skews heavily towards the male demographic, and she's also familiar enough with shounen ai to tease Kagami about it with specifics. But she also expresses comfort, maybe far too much comfort, with her role as a short and cute high schooler capable of being objectified by the otaku gaze. There’s something going on, and that something makes her a crazy power fantasy for people in pretty much every position of the great web of gender, cis and trans alike. Konata as The Divine Moe Androgyne. Seeing the Macross Frontier crossover figure that fuses her with beautiful girlish boy Alto Saotome only furthered my conviction in this.
Tumblr media
look at them
Anyways, Konata is clearly genre-aware and uses this to torture her tsundere bestie. Kagami, being what she is, will never admit to anything ever regarding romance, but it seems pretty likely that she’s in love with Konata. The OVA practically spells it out by depicting a particularly psychosexual dream of hers. The Lucky Star mangaka is famously against pairing off his characters, but even he admits that Konata and Kagami have a one-sided love. Most importantly, HE DOESN’T SPECIFY WHICH WAY. While definitely the less likely option, it would be extremely funny if it turned out that Kagami’s tsundere mixed signals were actually just genuine confusion and disinterest, and that Konata’s joke-flirting was real and unrequited all along.
Tumblr media
The mangaka may not be interested in shipping, but the staff at Kyoto Animation working on this show were Trve Yuri Warriors. The animation director even drew them married, with Kagami as a butch in a suit and Konata her femme (Maybe I need to re-evaluate my gender takes, but also, dressing as a girl is clearly still a sex thing for Konata). Sakamoto Kazuya, I hereby award you the title of Furtive Himedanshi.
Tumblr media
KyoAni understands the importance and hilarity of leaving those two unfulfilled, and goes all in on the underclassmen instead. Konata’s sickly younger cousin Yutaka is introduced halfway through the show, a plot development which immediately threatens to break everything. The background moe concentration of Lucky Star is already at somewhat dangerous levels by default, and throwing in even more childish designs can quickly make things feel uncomfortable. But they thread the needle and it genuinely turns out fine. Yutaka quickly befriends Minami Iwasaki, a butch kuudere who instantly and silently vows to Always Protect Her. Their dynamic would be just as passive and unaddressed of a crush as Konata x Kagami if it wasn’t for their pervert friend Hiyori, who constantly draws art of them as takarazuka couples. She exists in a state of perpetual agony and self-torture from of the shame of shipping her buddies in secret, even if they probably are gay. Obviously, I think she’s great. She and Konata only get a few scenes together but it’s so funny to see how they’re two sides of the same evil pervert lesbian coin, with shame as the dividing line.
Tumblr media
From a yuri perspective, the underclassmen round out the upperclassmen well. We’ve got unrealized, possibly one-sided love, and some unfulfilled hazy feelings of dependence and warmth being observed through a terminally yuribrained third wheel. I’m very satisfied by their efforts here. I expected the yuribaiting to be fairly half-assed, but it’s incredibly fun for the most part, and my goggles are lily-tinted enough that I simply see it as the truth.
Speaking of characters that threaten to shatter Lucky Star, everything surrounding Konata's dad walks an extremely fine line considering that the punchline is that he's a total creep. Miraculously though, things never goes too far, and he even gets some sad and sweet character moments in a episode towards the end.
I was kind of surprised by the visual quality of this show! This is a late SD-era anime, but the Youtube uploads I watched are all full 1080p. How is that possible?  Basically, they threw it into a late-2000’s upscaling program which generally produced terrible results (the Haruhi BDs are famously rough) but works alarmingly well for Lucky Star’s ultra-simplistic, solid-color designs. You start to see jaggies at the edges of character’s hair, and some background detail is blurry upon examination, but in motion it works really well, and I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary at all for the first few episodes. Also, it was entirely animated at 30 frames per second??? That’s why the footage in the Out of Touch Thursday meme still looks surprisingly smooth even when slowed down like that – most of the Lucky Star OP was animated on the ones, so at half-speed you still get 15 frames of animation, as opposed to a maximum of 12 frames from the customary 24. Neat! Otherwise, the increased framerate is largely unnoticeable. Thank God it doesn’t do the jarring 30fps panning that a handful of productions from the mid-2000s are guilty of. Looking at you, Haibane Renmei.
Tumblr media
Lucky Star showed up in my life at an important time. I first started putting it on as something to watch during lunch, but it ended up serving a far greater purpose. Lucky Star helped me survive a terrible vacation where everyone immediately got covid and we were fully bedridden the whole time. Having a tablet on hand and the show already sitting there dubbed on Youtube genuinely kept me going. The English voice acting was much easier for my covid-addled mind to parse, compared to trying to follow along with subs, as keeping my head up was already a full-time activity. It was also so much more logistically accessible than having to hunt down torrents or DVDs or pirate sites. I suppose that’s the appeal of Netflix and Crunchyroll, eh? Unfortunately for them, I have far too much of a chip on my shoulder to ever pay for streaming anime.
Tumblr media
it was like this minus the stuffed animals because I was away from home ;_;
Lucky Star episodes are typically cozy affairs, but the episode where they visit the KyoAni studio is kind of heartbreaking now. The director of Lucky Star was one of the ones caught in the fire, alongside countless other contributors.
Well, the second Lucky Star director. The first one was unceremoniously fired four episodes into the production after a deluge of complaints and chocolate cornet memes regarding his middling introductory episodes. His current hobby is being racist online.
Tumblr media
Lucky Star ends as it begins, with the whole ensemble cast of girls working out how to perform the hectic opening theme. It’s an act of eternal return, and provides some nice closure to the show. CGDCT anime often struggle with capping off their seasons, so it was very welcome here.
Somehow, Lucky Star might go on a list of my ten favorite anime??? Even months after finishing it, this is still hard for me to accept, being a weirdo elitist with antiquated weeb prejudices. But I think it’s true. It’s been fun to observe how Lucky Star’s second life in the 2020s has been split cleanly between “webcore” aesthetic collages with nostalgiabait revisionist memes, and a general critical reappraisal of the moe-boom now that we’re so far away from it. I’m obviously in the latter camp, but I’m here for it. This show was a dive into the deep end for me (I avoid shows from the SD era 2000s like the plague, and CGDCT isn’t my thing unless it's explicitly yuri), and it paid off splendidly. One could even say that it saved me.

ᵀᴼᴰᴬʸ'ˢ ᴬᴿᵀ : New Year's Divine Beasts - Tsukasa Tenma
Tumblr media
﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌
Today was New Year's holiday, meaning all shrine's were opened for everyone to give gifts to their gods and thank them for this year while also asking for the next one to be even better!
Your family was busy preparing the party or couldn't go due to health problems... so you were the one who was sent to deliver a gift to the shrine of dragon god, also known as god of harvest.
You entered the shrine at late evening, there wasn't anyone in there, so you found it weird to see someone laying on the shrine and eating the offerings!! You couldn't really watch someone destroy the offering place just like that, so before you even took a closer look at that person, your words already left your mouth.
"Uh... excuse me, I don't think you should sit there. It's an offering place..."
"Huh? Oh are you worried? Hahaha! Don't you recognize me from the stories?"
He finally turned to you. And that's when you noticed it... horns... dragon tail... fancy clothing... confident smile... all traits that most definitely weren't human and perfectly matched description of dragon god, Tsukasa Tenma.
"Y-You are-!!"
You felt so ashamed by scolding literal god!!! And yet, he still had this carefree smile as if nothing happened. With small moment of you not knowing what to do, he layed on his stomach and leaned his head on his hand.
"Is that little gift you're holding for me~? How generous! And you have a chance to hand it to me directly! What a day, isn't it?"
"Well yes, but..."
"Ah-Ah! I know what you're about to say. 'You bet I received many better gifts already', right? You mortals... Eh... Don't you know I appreciate the gesture? Not the value?"
He happily took the gift from you once you got close enough, and moved to inspect it.
"Ah, fruits and mask! Absolutely divine deisgn! I can tell there was a lot of work put into it!"
He even tried on the mask, showing just how much he likes it. And instead of putting it down, he attached it to his head with the ribbon on it, letting it sit on the side, as he reached to try one of the fruits.
"Mhh~ So sweet~ Please pass best thanks to the farmer! Their gift, as well as hard work won't go unnoticed, I'll make sure of that myself!"
"I-I definitely will... I-"
"Oh right! You must feel intimidated... I can't blame you of course. You ARE talking to a god like myself! How about you just call me by my name? Would that make you more comfortable?"
"Wouldn't that be a bit... impolite since you're..."
"A god? Maybe to some, but not for me! So please do! In exchange I'll call you by your first name too! Would that be alright with you, Y/N?"
"Of course- How do you know my name...?"
"Oh I know every mortal's name! It's what good god should know after all! What should we talk about now... It's been so long since I had interaction with a mortal... especially one this kind!"
He was considering his options here now, leaving you to adapt to current situation. It was obvious he was craving for some conversation with a human, so who you were to reject that?
"Oh, I know! I could share my sweets with you! That's a nice human tradition!"
"But those are for you alone!!"
"I'm allowed to treat my guests! You're already doing me a favor by talking to me, so I'd like to repay you somehow! Here, try those! I have a feeling you might like it!"
He handed you candies of your favorite flavor, which you gladly took! But before you could even say thank you, one of the shrine maidens entered, seemingly just as stunned as you when you entered, once she saw dragon god. You didn't really wanted to deal with all that... it was already enough of surprises for today!! So you quickly excused yourself.
"I will go now!! Thank you so much for talking to me!!!"
"Likewise, my dear! Untill the next year!"
You rushed out of the shrine, leaving the god and maiden to talk between themselves, you were so stressed that Tenma's words reached you only after few minutes...
"(Wait... what did he meant by 'next year'...?)"

(Magic Show Assistant Saki and Divine Beast/Pandemonium Kasa because they're my favorite <3)
*The siblings are powerful enough to retain a human for, which is how they're able to blend in with humans (ft. Mizusaki & Akikasa)
*They're transfem and transmasc bc I said so
*Samsa Mizuki and Darkfes Akito are exorcists and their main targets are obv the Tenma siblings
*Saki is a mermaid/siren and Tucaca is a dragon (very original)
*they end up accidentally adopting a child Toya
*Akito has a big fat crush on his senpai
*Said senpai is the yokai he's been trying to exorcise for 2 years
*Mizuki does not realize she's dating a yokai
*Pandemonium Rui is a former exorcist who gave up and started dating Divine Beast Nene (serpent yokai) who happens to be dating Wonderland Emu (Bunny yokai)
*Saki isn't able to hold her human form all day bc it's not Saki without some kind of illness holding her back /hj
*it's easily managed with Tsukasa using his own powers to help Saki keep up the form
*They're much prettier in their yokai forms
*Maiden's Hope Haruka and Divine Beast Rin are their mentors
*The Tenmas are well-known within the yokai community
*Saki is a waterbender and Tsukasa is a firebender /j

The Cult of the Fox: Power, Gender, and Popular Religion in Late Imperial and Modern China by Xiaofei Kang (2006)
This book was originally recommended to me by my friend 9 while I was working on the Tsukasa post last year, and initially I only planned to take a cursory glance to perhaps find some fun trivia. However, it ended up unexpectedly engaging - much more than I expected from a dense monograph on a topic I actually didn’t have much interest in prior. I can safely say it deserves all the praise it got. The title honestly undersells what this study is - Kang covers earlier material too. A lot of space is devoted to the Tang period in particular due to its formative role. Despite its value as a scholarly source, it’s also not inaccessible - you probably could pretty much read it as if it was a collection of anecdotes with particularly dense introductions. Foxes were evidently seen as incredibly versatile literary characters. Divine splendor of foxes acting as attendants of deities or pursuing immortality intersects with anecdotes about beleaguered officials meeting with them in abandoned buildings to drink and discuss “historical beauties” (a subject foxes are experts in, as it turns out). Literary fiction isn't all, though. While distinct from gods, ancestors, ghosts and so on, foxes remained a fixture of religious life, especially on the folk level. Kang actually conducted a field study to showcase modern examples in addition to historical ones. However, she makes sure to highlight official attitudes were often ambivalent - the republican and communist governments’ perception of local fox customs as superstition was not without earlier historical precedent. What I found particularly interesting is that it would appear that the study of the perception of foxes tells us as much, if not more, about humans as it does about these animals themselves. Through history, foxes could be used to metaphorically represent virtually every possible group at the margins of society: immigrants (especially Sogdians), courtesans, officials with humble backgrounds trying to trick their way into marriage with daughters of noble families (some of them wrote stories where their fox self inserts fail at it), and more. They were the quintessential image of every type of The Other at once. 10 out of 10 stars or whatever.

The green eyes of perdition
Tumblr media
It seems like we haven't talked about this little princess, right?
Sweet and kind, but secretive and apathetic Sakura.
Let's not be so mean to her, let's be fair. Her face always seems to be sunk in sorrow and sadness over something she has no control over.
Sakura is the human who has a bond with a supernatural, in this case Tsukasa, ok, we know that. She is his assistant, which means there is a contract between them. Sakura is not dead since Hanako said that "the traitor" is a human linked to a supernatural and that he is spreading rumors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another indication that she is not dead is that students can see and interact with her. But then you ask, if she's not dead, how does she have a bond with Tsukasa if he only grants wishes to the dead?
There are some possibilities, let's list them
She died and came back to life
She has special blood just like minamotos
She is a type of deity
She works directly for a greater deity
In the first possibility, she may have died in the red house or school and asked Tsukasa if she could come back to life in addition to another complementary request to this one, which would make her have a very long bond with him. So we have our first counterargument, if that were the case, she couldn't have been alive for so long. Even if she suddenly came back to life, would she live more than 100 years?
Tumblr media
The second possibility would be a plausible explanation, but we have another counterargument, if that were the case she wouldn't be able to make a wish to Tsukasa, since he only grants wishes to dead people.
Being a deity still has a foundation. We don't know what her abilities are and if she has them, but would a deity be considered a dead person? And if she really was some kind of God, why would she need to bond with Tsukasa to fulfill her own desire? He is clearly superior to her and she is uncomfortable with having to live with him and obey him. He is her "master" as she said. But there is an interesting fact about it, Sumire asks Hakubo if he was working for her.
Tumblr media
We don't know if this is true, he neither denied nor confirmed it. She asks if Sakura put him to be one of the seven mysteries, that's very curious. But we can't completely trust what Sumire said because she was imagining that was the case, that is, it was her deduction that Hakubo worked for Sakura. Maybe she thought of this because of the way Sakura spoke to her, we don't know, Sumire is naive, she didn't know much about the world, since she spent a good part of her life and post-death (?) in that village.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, she relayed what Sakura said to Hakubo, reminding him of his duty. And he says this
Tumblr media
It seems like he recognizes who Sumire is talking about?
If Sakura had the power to appoint or remove the mysteries from their positions, then why would she be going to all this trouble to remove the yorishiro?
The last possibility, she works for a greater divinity. It's an interesting argument, let's assume she made more than one request to Tsukasa and in addition to the bond she had to do some things he wanted. Or, Sakura made a request that only a God could grant, and in order for her to have that wish fulfilled she would have to obey that God in some way.
So let's suppose, Sakura died and asked Tsukasa to come back to life, ok, then she made a complex request (that everything cease to exist, something she left between the lines) so Tsukasa asked God to fulfill it and in exchange for that she would have to help Tsukasa remove all the seals from the yorishiros, as she is actually doing. Then, when she did as he asked, her wish would finally be fulfilled. That makes sense, doesn't it?
Tumblr media
She would be working for a deity, a deity that would be linked to Tsukasa, the boy with whom she has a bond and whose wish can only be fulfilled after God's wish ends. Makes sense, doesn't it? But what about Natsuhiko, where does he fit in here? A human but immortal guy who is there to "take care" of Tsukasa. That was the only reason that was explained as to why he is among them.
He himself says he is responsible for taking care of Tsukasa and the boy never went against him even when Natsuhiko interrupts him (we know that Tsukasa doesn't like being interrupted and he gets aggressive) this never happened, even when Natsuhiko tried to stop Tsukasa from playing Katanuki , something that Amane makes clear that makes Tsukasa angry.
Tumblr media
Don't you think it would be funny if Natsuhiko was that God? hahaha it would be a really big plot, but I don't know if I believe in that hypothesis because he's a human, but it would be funny. Natsuhiko is strangely similar to the Kannagi who was trapped in the red house, maybe they have some family connection? And if they did, how would that change Natsuhiko's life? That Kanagi didn't appear for nothing, he must have some greater importance in the future (perhaps). I still don't have much to say about this flirt, we have almost no clues about him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So to finish, we have one last hypothesis, Sakura being the former or the next number 7. I saw some people talking about this because of her name, but that doesn't seem to make much sense. It doesn't seem like Sakura wants to be tied to a bathroom fulfilling other people's wishes, she doesn't care about anyone, and she wants all the mystery seats to disappear. So how does this hypothesis fit in?
Tumblr media
She and Tsukasa want all mysteries to cease to exist. Tsukasa wants humans, both living and supernatural, to be able to do whatever they want, and Sakura wants everything to cease to exist, and she went after this desire even though she had to put up with Tsukasa and wait for so long, in addition to remorselessly using other people to do so. .
Tumblr media
Despite this, Sakura doesn't really seem satisfied, even though she is so close to getting her wish. As always, JSHK being contradictory.
Does it seem to you that she is happy?
Tumblr media
He says "you don't know that for sure" and she reacts that way. We can even see the little stars next to her, showing that she was happy to hear this. Was she happy when he said she's not sure it will all disappear?
But, as I don't like to rule out possibilities, let's imagine that she also reacted that way because even if everything ends he wants to go out with her.
This story always comes down to a "wish" what is Sakura's real wish?
There are still other hypotheses and possibilities that I want to develop about this trio, perhaps in the next opportunity, for now I am satisfied with what we have.

-Shinmyoumaru (Has her own palace but nostalgia for when she lived with Reimu so visits sometimes).
-Aunn (goes between shrine and the Myouren Temple)
-Reimu's 3 pets (Live in the pet corners)
-Genji the Turtle (Pond out back)
And Lis Muses in unusual places

Good Day to you! In the last part of Chapter 115, Kou mentioned in detail to Mitsuba the many different spirit-summoning incantations, including the "Tsukasa-Kun" incantation that they were dealing with. In that explanation, Kou compared the Tsukasa-Kun incantation to the likes of the "Kokkuri-San" and Angel-San incantations. While the Kokkuri incantation is obviously based from the Kokkuri boards that the Japanese often used to perform divinations during the Meiji Era, what exactly are the "Angel-San" incantations supposed to refer to? I presume that they may refer to the use of the names of Angels as a form of spirit summoning or divination but I suspect that to be something Western-inspired and too far for any Japanese person to utilize. Note: This is based from the Drunk Bath Salt Scanations version that I read, maybe there is a more accurate version, especially in the offical English versions out there.
And good day to you as well!
Since you already seem well-informed on Kokkuri-san I'll just skip to Angel-san. Note that I'm not talking from personal experience, just reading from multiple sources on google. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Angel-san (エンジェルさん) is just a variation of Kokkuri-san, as was made clear in the chapter itself. It seems to be one of the more popular variations.
Tumblr media
From what the wikipedia page is telling me, instead of drawing a torii gate on the piece of paper, you draw a cupid to summon Angel-san. But the result is generally the same.
As far as I can tell the ritual is 100% Japanese too! And Angel-san is an extremely literal translation of the name, so it's not invoking a specific angel...less you count cupid, I suppose.
If I had to speculate on why they use that name, I think Angel-san just sounds cool and catchy. Angels are also renowned for having mystical powers so it makes sense that they'd be able to answer your questions like Kokkuri-san, a kitsune, does.
Hopefully that's not an underwhelming answer, I just don't think there's much more to it!
Tumblr media
And to cap off here is a screencap from the Japanese version. As opposed to the above screencap, I'd say this is a more literal translation: "it goes by a different name but it's the same as stuff like kokkuri-san or angel-san".
From my perspective, Kou is only listing these names to give Mitsuba (and the reader) a point of reference. Doesn't work as well for a western audience unfortunately, but luckily we have chapter 4 of after-school hanako-kun for that...

TBHK #116 Thoughts
I am still kind of 'why? how?' that whatever this is is in the school and not the red house.
I initially thought this might just be the 'pure' ghost of Tsukasa - in which case, him choosing to be near where his twin spends most of his time makes sense. Buuuut...
Right now, I'm thinking the Clock Keepers did not - and maybe could not - destroy the Red House Entity. So they did the next best thing. Right now, I'm thinking that they waited until after 4 year old Tsukasa (possessed by the RHE) returned to the living world - you know, after Nene and Kou met him - and then killed him. The dual entity (Tsukasa+RHE) is still a dual entity, but severely weakened. It may have taken decades for it to be even strong enough to do what it's doing right now. I think this makes sense - I doubt the Clock Keepers would have quit with the job only partially completed, so the entity they're dealing with now probably just looked like a dead boy at the time.
Look....I'm having a hard time with the idea that Amane knows what's going on here. I'm just...not getting that vibe. He may be aware that the divination rumors are about a spirit with the same name as his lost twin, but...all signs are pointing to Tsukasa having been killed when he was four. If Hanako's words to Nene were true, then Amane in this timeline has forgotten (or never even learned) that the spirit world is real. He might not even remember his twin at all, if Hanako was so sure Nene'd forget his entire existence. Amane seems very much to be a kind sort of adult, the kind of person kids have no problem being comfortable around.
That's not so say I can't come up with an interpretation of events-thus-far that not only makes Amane aware of what's happening, but complicit in them. I'd just rather not believe that to be the case.
If one assumes Amane is well aware that the school spirit is in fact his twin's, then I can easily figure he got that awareness from Tsuchigomori and his own cross-timeline dreams (much like Mitsuba has cross-timeline dreams). If one works from that premise, it's entirely possible Amane summoned his brother's spirit (or otherwise drew it in) and may regard the disappearance of the students as...well. Necessary sacrifices to strengthen that spirit.
I don't like that interpretation. I'd rather be wrong. However, I can't disregard the possibility. The one area where Amane and Tsukasa have always seemed to have the same vibe is that when it comes to what they love, the entire rest of the universe can get fucked. And we already know that Amane can and will kill. That is, after all, how "Hanako" got started.
*sigh* Honestly, more than anything, I really just want the scoobies to just TALK TO TSUCHIGOMORI ALREADY. Or at least visit the library! Out of all the entire cast of this entire manga, Tsuchigomori is the most likely to have accurate answers to all their questions. I get that it's not the most exciting approach plotwise, but for gods' sakes, if they're not going to do it at least there should be a reason WHY. For Nene to forget is understandable, but Teru and Akane are supposed to be smarter than this!

Being a conceptkin of Tsukasa is like… no, I’m not Tsukasa the person. I’m tsukasa the entire being. I am the existence of Tsujasa, the embodiment of his inner struggles and feelings. But I was never the boy. I was the boy’s confidence, ego, and I especially have an affinity with the Tsukasas who were overcame by thier own desires, who let it corrupt them. I feel a lik distant cause I was never him himself, I was merely the power, the energy in his existence. The energy that is so powerful yet fragile. I am pretty much the higher self of Tsukasa. The divine holder of all that passion, all that love, all those dreams.

I just realized what happens once Rui dies in the dragonkasa au-
does a trauma cycle start over again? or does he jut kinda move on like nothing happened-
This is a good ask to talk about how dragonkasa's trauma has been haunting him for years till present time.
For starters, Tsukasa has always been aware that his relationship with Rui (Past) was going to end at some point because they are from two different worlds, he is an immortal god which job is to fulfill human's wishes and grant fortune, while Rui is a merely counselor. Their paths get crossed because wants to archive a dream, Rui wants war to end and people from his town and the whole country to feel safe and smile everyday because he's grown seeing people being scared and suffering on their own. Obtain happiness through working hard for it was what firstly caught Tsukasa's attention on Rui, eventually he falls in love after spending more time with him and understanding what a human life means. He has already got attached to other humans (Saki and Touya) but the attachment he had with them and Rui is totally different. I didn't fully show how detached Tsukasa is from humans in the past and how now, present time, he is totally different but that's what ends up being his downfall and provoked his trauma in the end.
Tsukasa has never really socialized enough with humans, never developed feelings for them besides the "I need to protect them" "it's my duty, I was created to this purpose." but always putting a distance because humans and god shouldn't be allowed to get together, that's rule that never allowed Tsukasa to actually get close to humans. Saki and Touya break a bit this rule, Tsukasa starts to get a glimpse of what a human life is and after he meets Rui, he realizes how different they are and how fragile is a human life.
Now in present, Tsukasa is a bit lost like he isn't totally sure why he can't move on, it happened a long ago already and he meets Rui's reincarnation. At first he thinks this is a punishment, because all the people that has been in touch with him previously, forgot about him (he isn't a god anymore, literally speaking, just a divine creature) so seeing the love of his life being reincarnated and not being able to remember him, it's painful.
But it's painful not being able to move on from all those sweet memories he has with him. Tsukasa is fully aware that Rui isn't the one he fell in love but there's a lot of factors that make him believe, there's something in there and he still can't move on. The whole au is about that, how Tsukasa is going to move on from this state of perpetual "grief" he ignored over the years and just "lived" to a one where he can truly find his own answer and happiness.
There's a lot of things I want to show but I want to focus specially where Tsukasa struggles with how to stop feeling bad for being "happy" with this Rui instead of the one he swore to love for the rest of his days.
As for dying, I can't and won't spoil the end of the au but I believe there's a very simple solution to end this cycle. Tsukasa will come to think about this and find an answer about it as well, hope you guys enjoy what i have prepare for that moment.
