Memes and a Redesign, of my Fishman and his househusband ^^ I'm basically drawing non-stop atm, I just post it all to dA because I've been hoplessly enarmoured in an art based RPG. I am getting a good grade in Horse Art game and I couldn't be happier!

Self-addressing of minor male characters in Ace Attorney (Gyakuten Saiban) / Personal pronouns
We've talked about the main male and female characters, but we shouldn't forget about the minor male characters who accompany us throughout at least each part of the Ace Attorney (GKS) series
The first man who accompanies us throughout the first trilogy is Itonokogiri Keisuke (Richard/Dick Gumshoe)
And here's an interesting point. His pronoun is "jibun" (自分)
Tumblr media
自分は、刑事課の イトノコギリという者ッス。
Jibun wa, keiji ka no Itonokogiri to iu mono ~tssu.
I'm from the Criminal Affairs Division. My name is Itonokogiri.
This is a rather rarely used pronoun; it literally translates as "self", although it has the meaning "I/me".
Jibun is used by about only 14% of men and 1% of women. This fact makes the pronoun gender-neutral, but predominantly masculine.
Compared to other first-person pronouns, the nuance of 自分 is introspective, and it's often associated with the military or athletic community, which have strong hierarchies. This suits Itonoko's personality very well, considering that he is a subordinate of the prosecutor and rarely thinks for himself.
Also, "jibun" can be an indicator of the Kansai dialect (Osaka), where it is used to denote both the first and second person. But, since Itonoko's speech was not noted to have any dialect (there are other features), and he was born and raised in the same city (and the city is from the Kanto region), this option is out of the question.
Interestingly, even after Itonoko realized that detectives should do their own investigations rather than rely on directions from prosecutors, and began making decisions on his own, his self-address did not change. Probably a matter of habit.
自分は、何をしたらいいッスか・・・・
Jibun wa, nani o shitara Ī ~tsuu ka...
What should I do...
___________________________________________
Next is our dear friend's father, Mitsurugi Shin (Gregory Edgeworth)
His speech is very formal (like his son's), and he uses the formal personal pronoun "watashi" written in kanji.
Tumblr media
私は弁護士の御剣信と申します。
Watashi wa bengoshi no Mitsurugi Shin to mōshi masu.
My name is Shin Mitsurugi, a lawyer.
___________________________________________
Let's not forget about Mitsurugi assistant - Shigaraki Tateyuki (Eddie Fender, almost wrote Raymond Shields)
Most of his dialogues take place with Mitsurugi and young Yatagarasu, and he stubbornly continues to call himself "uncle". (オジサン - ojisan)
Tumblr media
オジサン、アトでここの館長に 文句言っくから。寒すぎだって。
Ojisan, ato de koko no kanchō ni monku I~tsu toku kara. Samu sugi datte .
Uncle going to complain to the director of this place later. It's too cold.
It was not easy to catch his personal self-addressing with other people, but not impossible.
In dialogues with others, Shigaraki-san uses the polite male pronoun "boku" (like Naruhodō/Wright)
Tumblr media
ぼく、その・・・・! がんばって助けますからッ!
Boku, sono! Ganbatte tasuke masu kara ~Tsu !
I, well...! I'll do my best to help you!
___________________________________________
Let's not forget about our permanent presiding judge (here is someone who, with rare exceptions, is always with us)
Tumblr media
ええ!わ、私がですか?
ē! Wa, watashi gadesu ka?
What? Me?
___________________________________________
The new generation is first represented by rock star and hard-working prosecutor - Garyu Kyoya (Klavier Gavin)
Despite his prominent image as a musician and rock star, Kyouya uses the polite masculine pronoun "boku" (the same one used by Naruhodō/Wright).
Tumblr media
ぼくも楽しみにしているんだ。
boku mo tanoshimini shite iru nda.
I'm looking forward to it too.
His speech is generally polite, and in the original he uses various English phrases in his speech, written either in Latin or Katakana. These phrases, by the way, are often used at concerts of musical groups whose first language is not English. (In the localization, as you know, German was used as a substitute).
Tumblr media
オーケイ、ベイビー!
ōkei, beibī!
Okay, baby!
___________________________________________
Mr. Garyu Kirihito (Kristoph Gavin) uses the personal pronoun "watashi", which is written in kanji, indicating formal speech and an adult character.
Tumblr media
___________________________________________
The second prosecutor from the new generation is a master of psychological manipulation, Yugami Jin (Simon Blackquill)
To be honest, his image as a samurai somewhat clouded my eyes, and I expected some self-addresses inherent in this category (for example, "yo")
But no, Yugami-kun uses the crude male pronoun "ore" (like Odoroki/Apollo)
Tumblr media
それと、俺は検事ってェ立場上、 おめえさんに手は貸さねェからな。
soreto, ore wa kenji tte ~e tachiba-jō, o-me e-san ni te wa kasa nēkara na.
Also, because I'm a prosecutor, I won't help you.
We don't know when he started using this designation (there are no monologues from him before his arrest), but judging by his characterization from other characters, he behaved very noble and politely, so perhaps he could change the personal pronoun to a more rude one to maintain the image of a "cruel criminal".
His manner of speech is, in principle, extremely interesting, and, I think, worthy of a separate post. In short - he speaks in a dialect + uses obsolete words + he has a special way of addressing other characters
___________________________________________
The third prosecutor from the new generation, who is also a monk from the kingdom of Khurain - Sahdmadhi Nahyuta (his name was not localized, thank you)
But this young man has an extremely interesting way of addressing himself.
"Sesso" (拙僧) literally means "inept monk".
This is a VERY modest form of address that was used by Buddhist monks.
Tumblr media
拙僧がこの事件の担当に ふさわしくないと・・・・?
sessō ga kono jiken no tantō ni fusawashikunai to?
Are you saying I'm not fit to take charge of this case...?
But, this is very different from his speech. Canonically, he is a foreigner, so he does not know all the features of the language in which the hearings are held. Therefore, Nahyuta uses, either unknowingly or intentionally, quite rude vocabulary and manner of speech (at the first hearing with him as a prosecutor, the judge, Odoroki and Kizuki were shocked). Even a native speaker, whose walkthrough I watched, was surprised and commented on this moment.
___________________________________________
Well, that's probably it for now on the topic of personal pronouns, but if you're interested in someone specific that I haven't mentioned, give me a sign.

Prof. Amyn Sajoo was supposed to be teaching a class at Simon Fraser University about political resistance.
Instead, he was on a picket line.
Sajoo is one of 1,600 SFU teaching staff who have been on strike for more than a week after negotiations between the school and the Teaching Support Staff Union, or TSSU, broke down.
Teaching assistants and professors marched in a circle outside the school’s downtown Vancouver campus, yelling slogans and banging drumsticks against orange plastic Home Depot buckets.
Some on the picket line are graduate students struggling to make rent. Others are English teachers who have never had pensions. And some, like Sajoo, are nationally recognized scholars who have taught at SFU for years but have never had a permanent job. [...]

February is Turner Syndrome Awareness Month!
So, I rarely talk about this on here, but February definitely feels like the right time to do it. I was born with a condition called Turner Syndrome (TS), and since February is both my birth month and Turner Syndrome Awareness Month, I thought it would be a good time to spread some information about this condition that a lot of people don’t know much about!
Turner Syndrome is a condition where a person is born with only a single X chromosome in each cell, and the second sex chromosome partially or completely missing.
There is also a “mosaic” form where the second sex chromosome is only missing in some cells. TS can take a lot of different forms!
It’s more common than you might think! Approximately 1 in 2500 AFAB individuals in the US have TS according to Cleveland Clinic.
One common symptom is short stature (which is why TS Awareness Month is the shortest month!)
Heart issues are more common in people with TS than in the general population, as are thyroid and kidney problems. There is also an increased risk of scoliosis, osteoporosis, nearsightedness or farsightedness, and hearing loss.
TS can affect cognitive function as well, especially in the areas of executive function, attention, and social skills. It’s not uncommon for people with TS to also be diagnosed with ADHD or autism.
Kind of a funny note on the social skills thing: my experience has been that in social situations people with TS are usually kinda quiet, but if you get a bunch of us together we WILL NOT STOP TALKING.
You often see a LOT of different symptoms of TS listed, but the reality is that it presents differently for pretty much everyone, so it’s important for people with TS and their doctors to know their own personal concerns.
While most people with TS that I know (myself included) identify as female, there are people with TS all across the gender spectrum!
That being said, you may see TS referred to as a “female condition” in a lot of places, including medical sources. Just keep in mind that a lot of people no longer consider that to be universally true, and there has definitely been pushback against that language in recent years.
TS is typically diagnosed either at birth with genetic testing or at the normal age of puberty due to a lack of typical physical development.
Treatments often include growth hormone replacement during childhood and other hormone replacement therapies later in life. Care is usually managed by an endocrinologist, and most people will be followed by a cardiologist as well.
Butterflies are used as symbol for TS! The idea of going through hardship and coming out stronger (like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly) is something that resonates with a lot of people with TS. I actually have a butterfly tattoo!
If you want to learn more…
Here’s the Cleveland Clinic’s page on Turner Syndrome
And here’s Mayo Clinic’s
Here’s the homepage of the Turner Syndrome Society of the US! They have a lot of good information, although their website is a little confusing and probably needs updating.
If you’re on Facebook, here’s a post with some general information from the TSSUS page you can read and share!
These are definitely not the only sources out there, so feel free to do your own research.
Since I live in the US, I’m not really familiar with resources in other countries, but if anyone knows of some non-US based sources feel free to add them in a reblog!

Let Me Scream This From The Roof Tops
It's came to my attention that the TSSUS made a post on FB about males having TS and they even made a group for them. I am going to say this again if a person is born biologically male they cannot have TS. All of the information says TS only affects females. People who try to argue that the research is outdated are only trying twist thngs to fit their narrative and don't want to look foolish for spreading false information. People who claim that males can have TS probably heard some rumor and ran wild with it. There is absolutely no way a male can have TS, Noonan Syndrome or Klinefelter Syndrome maybe, but not TS. For males who claim to have TS and moms who claim their son has been diagnosed with TS really should get more tests done and a second or even third opinion. There could be something going on, but it isn't TS.

Interesting to read some of the logistical details of your position. At my school, Crim MA students are limited to two classes per term, which is still considered full time. People might take one course a semester, but it seems rare. MA’s have four mandatory research and theory courses, and then two electives or Directed Readings, before research and writing. Crim PhD students *may* take three classes per term, but two are recommended. They have six mandatory courses and then three electives or DRs, then a term of Comp prep and papers, and a public research proposal defence, before research and writing. None of those six-hour in vivo comp oral exams anymore.
(Will you have Comps after PhD coursework / before PhD Candidacy?)
An MA in Crim generally takes two years, through to thesis defence, and a PhD three years, though you can take up to three years for an MA, and up to two semesters of leave. I know a couple sixth-years and a fifth-year PhDs. COVID put a massive wrinkle in field research, conferences and publications, which in turn impacted their competitiveness in getting funding.
We do get TAships, but we don’t get tuition waivers for teaching. TA’ing is ironically considered part of your funding package, although it’s really just guaranteed work on behalf of the school, anyway. I usually teach about ten hours a week and do student meetings, marking and lesson prep for another three or four (much more during marking weeks). As a TA who ALSO has a regular day job on campus, though, I can pay for tuition in instalments off of my paycheque. Up until last July, my employee category *did* get tuition waivers. Then two months before I was set to start Grad School, they rolled that back so that only Permanent employees get waivers, and not long-term indefinite Temps like me. (I suspect it’s pushback against the Teaching and Support Staff Union, which has been embroiled in a ground war with the Admin for a few years. The TSSU has won some major arbitrations and the Admin doesn’t like it.)
So yeah, it’s full time school plus full time work, plus volunteering and lab outreach event planning. I’m pushing 48, not 25 as are most of my cohort, and while I’m grateful for the extra decades of learning Extreme Time Budgeting and how to stay balanced, I have no idea how long I can keep it up. I am crossing all my digits for a decent research funding grant for MA2, which would let me leave my office job.
How long do you anticipate being in grad school for and do you have a full course load? I have found it difficult to find programs that will take part time students.
The average time for someone to complete my program (both a Master's and a PhD) at my university is 9 years. I am hoping to do it in 8.
There are unfortunately very few programs who even offer part time options. In general, the expectation is that going to grad school will be your primary endeavor. That's not fair, but that's the way it is. There can be more flexibility after you get into a program. If you needed to take time off after you'd already been accepted, that could probably be arranged.
For me, a full course load (which I need to take in order to qualify for certain benefits) is 9 credits, or approximately 3 classes. On top of that, I am also a teaching assistant for an undergraduate class, which means that my tuition payments are waived. My TAship is for 20hours/week, but sometimes it's more and sometimes it's less depending on when students submit assignments.

Diagnosis and Finding Out
I was diagnosed with Turner Syndrome in utero (meaning my mom was still pregnant with me when she found out). A process known as amniocentesis was used, which means a sample of amniotic fluid containing fetal cells is taken from the sac surrounding the fetus and is then tested for genetic “abnormalities” (actually just variations). Turner Syndrome is one of the variations most commonly found via amniocentesis.
After the diagnosis, Mom found out as much as she could about TS with what information was available in 1994. That way, she knew what was coming when I arrived and could make sure she was mentally prepared to raise a kid who would need extra medical care.
She also made sure I knew fairly early on (at least, I don’t remember a point where I didn’t know about my diagnosis). I’m grateful for that; I doubt I’d be able to trust her at all if she had waited to tell me.
Having known from an early age also helped me be okay with it; I’ve never really had a period where I’ve grieved the fact that I can’t get pregnant (though that’s not to say it won’t happen; I imagine if I were to end up meeting someone I could see myself building a family with, I’d probably go through some tough emotions regarding that, even if I hate the notion of pregnancy).
It’s important to find out if your kid has Turner Syndrome as early as possible (though if you’re concerned about the 0.5% potential for miscarriage, at birth is a good point). And I can’t stress enough how vital at is that your child knows what’s going on from the beginning.

Teaching assistants at Simon Fraser University are launching a full strike today that could disrupt classes for the school’s 37,000 students.
The Teaching Support Staff Union, or TSSU, says its approximately 1,600 members will stop reporting for work, and tutorials, labs and lectures led by those students will be suspended.
It also says it plans to begin rotating pickets of the university’s three campuses in the Lower Mainland.
Unions representing administrative and custodial staff have said previously they will not cross the TSSU picket lines.
The SFU Faculty Association executive says it is leaving it up to professors whether they work during the strike. [...]
