Have you ever thought about the faith Achilles had in Patroclus? Achilles always waits for Patroclus.

Achilles waited for Patroclus to come to his palace. He waited for Patroclus to come closer to him to be his friend and right hand man. He waited for him to sleep together. He waited for their first kiss. He waited for Patroclus to reach him, for he was not going to leave with Chiron without him. He waited for him on the island of Skyros in order to be reunited one day. He waited for "his husband". Achilles waited to see Patroclus every evening or morning after the battle because he was his life breath. He hoped to be reunited with him because he was his home and safe place.

He waited for his return after Patroclus left in his armor for Troy. He waited for a sign or a message from his spirit. He wished that his wait would be short and that the gods would finally give his soul a rest so that he could be with Patroclus again.

He waited for Patroclus in the Underworld.

Achilles always hoped that Patroclus would find a way to be reunited with him. They are the eternal reunion.

“I’m with Patroclus,” Eddie says, interrupting Buck’s meandering thoughts. “No matter what happens, I would know it was you.”

Buck sets his book down and reaches for Eddie’s hand, threading their fingers together. “Oh, yeah? What if I like, get splashed by acid and become horribly disfigured?”

“Is that going to be your villain origin story?”

“Maybe.” Buck shrugs playfully.

“Even then,” Eddie insists, kissing their linked hands. “We’ve been through too much shit for me to not know you.”

“It would be the same for me, too, Eds. I’d recognize you anywhere. In any condition, in any universe.”

“You better. I’ll haunt you for eternity.”

Buck pinches Eddie’s side. “Thought you didn’t believe in that stuff.”

“For you, mi amor, I’ll make an exception. I, Eddie Diaz, do hereby promise to haunt one Evan Buckley for eternity should he fail to recognize me anywhere, in any condition, in any universe.” He pulls Buck down for a kiss, managing as best they can with the awkward angle. “Deal?”

Buck rolls his eyes fondly and brushes their lips together again. “Deal.”

“Buck?”

He startles awake at the sound of Bobby’s voice, wincing at the crick in his neck. When did he fall asleep?

“How long have you been here, kid?”

“I, uh, haven’t been home yet,” Buck answers sheepishly. He scrubs a hand through his hair, then down his cheek and over the bristly stubble starting to fill in already.

Bobby sends him a knowing look instead of giving him a lecture on how he promised to get some proper rest.

“How is he?” Bobby asks softly, his gaze drifting towards the hospital bed.

I have already written about Achilles' waiting, but what about Patroclus' willpower?

He continued to meet Achilles even though he knew he was the prince and he was an exile. He continued to stand by Achilles despite Thetis' threats. He ran after Achilles when he went with Chiron to train, determined not to stop running until he caught up with them. He begged Peleus to reveal Achilles' location and then sailed to Skyros to meet him. He followed him and the rest of the Myrmidons to the Trojan War. He followed him onto the battlefield and through the years there. He continued to wait for him every day in his tent to see him return from battle. He stood by his side after the conflict with Agamemnon. He stood by his side until he saw how Achilles was consumed by his self-centredness. Only then did he abandon him and beg him to fight for them again, as Patroclus had done since he met him.

Although he is not the "fighting" part (apparently), since that is what Achilles is supposed to be, Patroclus fights in another way. He never has things easy, unlike Achilles who is loved, respected and accepted by everyone; Patroclus has to fight against everything and everyone to be by the side of the one he loves. Patroclus is the tireless willpower that moves the soul to fight for what it believes in or loves. Likewise, Patroclus represents the part of the soul that is always searching for its other half.

That is why Patroclus, as he claimed, followed Achilles until after his death.
