Is Ty in Denial Over Livvy?
Artist: Charlie Bowater
I think it's worth noting that what Ty is currently experiencing re: Livvy is not grief but denial. - Cassie Answering Asks on Tumblr
I think this really points to what one of the biggest points of tension in the TWP series is going to be: the denial that Ty might be in over Livvy. This is how Cassie answered a question about why Kit left without saying goodbye to the Blackthorns in QOAAD. But is Ty really in denial? That's what I'm trying to ascertain by analyzing the passages below.
PS. If you do find a ghost, treat it kindly. I don’t think all ghosts mind being ghosts, as long as people are nice to them.
So this is how Ty ended a letter to Emma and Julian in SOBH. I feel like this shows us that to Ty, the real reason that someone may not like being a ghost is that they're ignored and not treated well. So the answer to the issue with Livvy is just to treat her the best he possibly can, to always be there for her. (Also, just to say this, Ty is one of the most sincerely kind characters in the whole TSC universe if you really examine scenes that include him. So, I also just think this quote stems from who Ty is at heart). But is simply treating Livvy well enough? Does that meet her needs? We see Livvy's perspective in GOTSM here:
There was so little to feel. For months now she had been less than a shadow at Ty's heels. Oh, why couldn't Livvy do the same? Why was she the only one who could not return and take up her life again?
While I do think that being kind to ghosts like Livvy or Rupert is important, the primary injustice here is that Livvy gets to be almost human, just without the parts that make life most worth living. Here we see that she continuously feels this sense of unfairness, why does everybody else get to live their lives except for her? Why is there so little for her to feel?
Here's another of Ty's perspectives on Livvy's resurrection:
She said a lot of reassuring things. But it still gave me a cold feeling, which I think is my body telling my brain that I’m afraid. If Julian and Emma found out about Livvy, they wouldn’t just be angry. They’d feel like they had to do something, like lay her to rest. People don’t think ghosts can be happy, but Livvy is happy. She helps me with work and she tells me advice for Anush (he has a crush on Rayan’s sister Nasha) and when we’re alone we play games or I read to her. She can’t do everything but why would being all the way dead be better? Everyone calls it “rest” but no one really knows, do they?
I feel like with Ty we consistently see this idea that Livvy being a ghost is better than nothing. In QOAAD when Kit tells him that he doesn't think Livvy would want to be resurrected Ty tells him that he doesn't think Livvy would want to be dead either. To me, this isn't rooted in Ty selfishly wanting Livvy back. On the contrary, I feel like Ty sees it this way because Livvy has always been there for him, making life better. So, for Ty, what if this is his way of making Livvy's life better? After all, wouldn't being a ghost that can still see be on Earth be better than the nothingness of death? Here's another of Livvy's perspectives to compare it to:
The sun was rising, and she tried to feel its warmth - something other than its brightness. To warm herself. What she would have given to feel that wet velvet crust of the top layer of sand under her feet, to feel the cold grittiness of the sand underneath change in temperature as the warmth of her human feet soaked away. To scream herself hoarse, knowing that no one would hear over the roar of the surf. She squatted and tried with ever particle of herself to pick up a piece of beach glass. But it was a useless endeavor. She had no more effect on the world than a fragment of dream.
I believe this scene really showcases one of the two worst parts about Livvy becoming a ghost: her ability to take action. When looking at Livvy's character in the first two books it is evident that she wants to take care of people and be able to have an effect on people. In Lord of Shadows we see her say this:
"I realized something," she said. "I want to be like you, Jules. Not this second, not right now, but someday. I want to take care of people, other Shadowhunters, people who need me. I want to run an Institute."
And I do realize that Livvy can still help people and have a powerful effect on the world as a ghost, I mean she's already found useful information about the Cohort and TWP isn't even here yet. She's just not able to help people in the way I think she feels called to do. Livvy very much seems like a hands-on, people's person. As a ghost she can't be that. She can't run an Institute, she can't even pick things up. You can very much see that she feels useless in GOTSM. But I think we see the thing she struggles with the most in these excerpts:
You can see ghosts but you cannot see me. Not when I come to sit by you while you sleep. Not when I am in the movements of the shadows across the lawn, or the twitch of a curtain. You cannot hear me, even though I am speaking to you because I have things I need to tell you.
It was wonderful to see how settled in Helen and Aline were, but it was also all extremely unfair, Livvy felt. Everyone else got to come home. Mark. Helen. Even Ty would come home someday. But she would never truly be home again.
Family is the most important thing to all of the Blackthorns, it seems like they base almost all of their actions around each other. I think what tortures Livvy is being able to see this family she loves so much but never being able to interact with them again except for Ty. Never getting to be a big and little sister. It's a vital part of Livvy's life that she has lost for the time being.
I want to say this though, I think it may be easy to look at all of these scenes and immediately say that Ty is in denial about Livvy's true situation and feelings, but I don't think that is true. Look at this scene:
Ty said, "I'm so sorry, Livvy." "For what?" she said. "For doing this to you," he said.
I think Ty realizes what all Livvy is missing, for the most part. I think it also really hurts him. He just feels that what she does have is better than what she could have in death.
All of these scenes also beg this question, would Livvy feel like this if she figures out the ins and outs of being a ghost or if she could show herself to her entire family? Like, when she actually sees the power she has for good in her current state as a ghost? I ask because of this scene:
"Oh, Ty," she said. "I would have done it for you. It isn't a thing that should be done, but I would have done it anyway. And so we would be in just the same mess we're in now. Besides, I think I'm getting the hand of this ghost thing."
Conclusion: I feel like Ty may have been in denial in the beginning but I don't think he is anymore. I also think that Livvy will have an easier time as a ghost as things progress in TWP. I also feel like Livvy has the potential to be a huge force for good, a protector, in TWP and I sincerely hope that happens. However, I do think this will be a major point of tension between Ty and other characters in TWP, especially Kit. I feel that many of them, especially the older Blackthorn siblings, will want to help Livvy be released into the afterlife instead of staying as a ghost. I think the finale of the entire series will reveal the fate of Livvy: whether she can stay as a ghost, has to be released into the afterlife, or gets to come back fully human.
Edit: By not being in denial, I mean that I think Ty understands that he did wrong and regrets resurrecting Livvy. The issue is that he doesn’t regret it enough to talk to Magnus or one of his siblings to try to either release Livvy or bring her back fully. To figure out the best way forward with Livvy, is what I guess I’m trying to say. And also, while I think Livvy could be a force for good and could acclimate to being a ghost, I also think there’s just as good a chance that she could go into one of her more volatile states. This would lead to some really awful stuff happening and could even be the crux of Ty and Kit’s plot in TWP.
Also, sorry for the ridiculously long post, it felt kind of like a really poorly written essay. I hope it was coherent and that you enjoyed it though :) Here's some beautiful Kit and Ty art for the road.

The Reaper's Daughter (PJM)
Summary: The Reaper’s Letter, a chilling call for blood, has been delivered, and who better to answer that call than the Reaper’s Daughter herself?
Pairing: Park Jimin x Reader
Genre: Hitman au, mystery
Word Count: 2.7k
Warnings: Park Jimin. That’s it, that’s the warning.
A/N: Take this random drabble (or possible prologue…?) while I struggle with writing TSC even though I’m only on the third chapter (●_● ).
The first time you met him was on a piece of paper.
It wasn’t just any piece of paper, of course. If that had been the case, his name would have been quickly dispelled into the forgotten depths of your mind. Your world was nothing short of a theatre piece crafted by Shakespeare himself, and anything that strayed from his intricately constructed script swiftly faded into its indifferent backdrops.
No, the paper you met him on was very much a detail of that script. Delicately handcrafted, with sloping black cursive characters and glittering golden borders. It had many names, too. The Reaper’s Letter. Death Note. The Waiting Crow’s Hailing. But, it was not what it was called that mattered.
What mattered was the name printed boldly on its top left corner. Because whoever’s name was unfortunate enough to find itself nestled cosily on this paper, would be found dead by week’s end.
It had always reminded you of a children’s game you could just barely remember from the shattered fragments of your childhood, though there was nothing childish about the work you did. You’re handed the Death Note, you navigate through the mountains of information it supplies, and then the hunt begins. Kind of like Tag, yet nothing like it at all.
But that time the rules had been slightly different. Usually accompanying the name was a picture of your target, alongside a thick file of information covering every miniscule detail of the name’s life. Instead, the paper handed to you held only three words.
Name: Park Jimin.
Beside it was no picture, no age, no location. At first it had annoyed you, because that meant the burden of research now fell heavily on your shoulders. But then again, this was a novel challenge, one that you were not willing to collapse under.
Your interest had piqued even further when you were halted before your exit to be given an ominous warning.
“Be careful, I heard he’s sharp.”
The statement was not enough to catch you off guard, but it, like the entirety of this task, was new. You were one of the best. If the likes of you had to be cautioned, then who exactly was this man?
You didn’t find out, and maybe that had been your first mistake. His information had been hidden well, too well. Of course, that had sent a few alarms blaring in your head about messing with the wrong people. But you had been given a job, and you couldn’t not see it through.
Thus, by week’s end, you had only managed to collect a measly location and picture. It wasn’t much, but you were out of both options and time. And really, a name and place was all you’ve ever needed anyway.
Killing a person was really not as difficult as films made it out to be.
Take Park Jimin for example. He was completely unaware of your presence on the rooftop of the building standing right next to the enormous banquet hall he was in now. Instead, he laughed with a woman adorning glittering gold jewellery from head to toe, with a velvety navy blue dress that could only be designer. She was not special amongst the sea of identically dressed women, each accompanied by men in posh suits.
Park Jimin didn’t look too bad himself. He was donning a dark magenta suit that hugged him in all the right places, especially the extra piece of cloth that wrapped around his torso to show off his figure. His hair was dyed dirty blonde, but it only added to the intensity that radiated off of him.
If only it could save him from the bullet that was about to make acquaintance with his head.
The one that you were going to release, just from a little pressure on the trigger of the sniper that your finger brushed against now.
Poor Park Jimin. He won’t be getting laid tonight, at least, not in the way he wanted.
Your finger pressed against the trigger, only to still when a head appeared in front of Jimin. It was another woman, this time in a sequined scarlet dress that was pulled taut against her skinny figure.
You readjusted the aim of your sniper, making sure it was once again pointed towards Jimin’s head, only to huff when another opulently dressed individual, this time a man dressed in a dull black suit, gets in the way of your aim.
You wouldn’t have paid it much thought if it wasn’t for the unusual nature of everyone’s movements. The second your aim found its way back to Jimin’s head, another individual would pop up, effectively blocking your aim. It was so ridiculous that, at some point, even Jimin himself had disappeared behind the crowd of people now laughing and chattering with one another.
It only took you a few moments to realise the eeriness of the situation, and then one more to jump to your feet. Something was wrong, you could practically feel it buzzing around you in the air.
As if confirming your suspicion, you heard the safety of a gun being turned off behind you. That made you freeze.
“So, they chose you?”
The voice behind it was soft but low, and although you’ve never heard it before, you can already guess who it belongs to.
You kept your lips sealed, not entirely sure what his words meant. They were too ambiguous, too many meanings that they could branch into.
Instead, you decided to risk turning around.
You were wrong, you realised, about Jimin not looking too bad. Because although he was pointing a simple handgun at your forehead, he was probably the most beautiful man you had ever laid your eyes on.
His magenta suit had darkened into a rich wine shade that seemed to glitter under the soft rays of the moonlight, while a few strands of dirty blonde hair rested delicately on his exposed forehead. This was in contrast with his sharp jawline, that casted a deep shadow on his neck. But his eyes… Though a simple brown, they held an intensity you couldn’t quite decipher. Like creatures swimming to the surface of the vast ocean for only brief moments, you managed to catch only glimpses. Of mischief. Of anguish. You could have sworn you had even caught a tail of compassion.
But a compassionate man wouldn’t be pointing a gun at your head now would he?
In a single, swift movement, your fingers wrapped around the gun at your waist and brought it to his own head, a perfect reflection of him. You waited for the familiar fear to pull at his calm expression, but instead, you watched him smile.
He was pissing you off. Not because of his clearly inciting behaviour, but because he had a chance to kill you and he didn’t. He didn’t seem stupid enough not to be aware of your intentions, and yet, he didn’t seem the slightest bit worried, or even vengeful.
Why?
“It seems we’re at a stalemate,” he stated, eyes searching your expression. For what? You didn’t know. Only now were you wishing that you had collected more research on the man standing before you. Then you at least might’ve had an inkling of his intentions.
“Both of us will be dead the second these guns go off,” he continued nonchalantly, as if he were talking about the weather.
Silence.
It was a very underrated tactic that had quickly become one of your signature skills a long time ago. It was especially useful now, as you were in a bit of a predicament. You could have shot him and left easily if he was inexperienced. A simple disarm, duck and shoot would have been more than enough to secure a safe exit, as well as your paycheque.
But his posture was perfect, his hands gripped the gun without even a quiver of instability, and there was an ease to his movements that lacked any kind of panic.
He was like you, you realised. Gang members were wildcards that acted before they thought and most of their movements were rough around the edges. Police officers were more diplomatic, and Jimin would have stated that he was a cop the first chance he got if he were one.
No, he wasn’t a gang member or police officer. He was more like you.
You allowed yourself a single step backwards, the beginning of your journey to the roof’s edge.
If he was as experienced as you were, he was going to be a slight problem. You had not anticipated this. You needed to do more research, find out who this man truly was because he did not seem normal. His flashy attire, calculating gaze, and eerie amusement in this whole situation had thrown you off, but you’ve never been one to be embarrassed.
Life happened, you were a prime example of that.
“Leaving so soon?” He asked, tilting his head to the side with an unwavering gaze.
“You’re not doing a very good job at- well, your job. So, I’m assuming the party’s over,” you finally said, voice flat.
“Ah, so she can speak,” he said, feigning astonishment, but it didn’t bother you much, “love, if I wanted you dead, you would be it already.”
“Careful. I’ve seen the overconfident crumble faster than the weak.”
You know you shouldn’t have responded if you wanted to maintain your air of silence, but you were also mature enough to admit that winning frivolous verbal spats like these were a guilty pleasure of yours. Before Jimin could continue, to fan the fire you guessed because he seemed like the kind of man that would, you beat him with a question.
“So, tell me why you’ve decided you don’t want me dead.”
He chuckled at that statement.
“Who said I didn’t?”
He readjusted his aim so that instead of your head, the gun was pointed at your heart, “maybe you’re just nice to look at, and I’m just enjoying the view before you’re reduced to nothing but a pool of blood on this rooftop.”
This time it was your turn to chuckle, but you only laughed inwardly. If he was expecting you to be scared he was going to have to do a better job than that.
Despite repressing the laugh, you still felt a smile just barely twitch against your lips, “I would’ve expected trash talking to be beneath you Park Jimin.”
Jimin’s gaze remained steady, a glint of amusement in his eyes, “trash talking, huh? Well, I guess I’m just full of surprises.”
You cocked your head to the side, a silent question, but Jimin only copied the movement. At first you thought he was mocking you, but then he spoke.
“So they finally decided to send you,” Jimin continued, “Reaper’s Daughter.”
You didn’t let yourself tense, or move in any way that would indicate that he had caught you off guard. That nickname was known by many, but the many couldn’t attribute it to a face. Not only did Jimin know you were The Reaper’s Daughter, but he had also revealed it to you that he knew. You still didn’t know what game you had walked into, but it was clear now that there was more to this task than you thought. There was more to Jimin than you thought.
Slowly, you let your eyebrows pull together as you cast him a confused look. Jimin chuckled, seeming to find amusement in your lack of communication.
“I’ve been keeping tabs on you for a while.”
The fact that you’ve had someone tailing you and you didn’t notice didn’t sit right with you. But you pushed the thought to the back of your mind, focusing instead on the fact that Jimin had been collecting information on you and that could only mean there was something he wanted.
Before you could ask what it was, Jimin spoke up again.
“When I first saw you on this rooftop, I wondered what you could be doing here. And then I watched you assemble your sniper,” he said, “I couldn’t understand why you’d agreed to make me one of your targets.”
You almost snorted at his naivety, because if he had been tailing you then he should know what you do for a living, but then paused at his next words.
“I found it odd that this little mouse had agreed to eliminate the only one on her side,” he continued, “unless… she decided to switch sides.”
The atmosphere shifted from light jabs to a fierce hostility as the amusement suddenly drained from his face, leaving behind a sharp pair of eyes that betrayed nothing. You automatically tensed, knowing that the real standoff had just begun, even if you didn’t have a clue as to what Jimin was talking about.
“I must say I’m disappointed. I wouldn’t have expected it from you of all people. I didn’t expect that you’d be here for this reason.”
“Speak plainly, Jimin. What are you talking about?” you said, your curiosity finally reaching a point strong enough to break your silence. Your tone was still flat, but now it was firm, tired of his cryptic words and your mind trying to grasp at straws to understand.
Jimin studied you for a moment. Without the amusement in his gaze, you had to stop yourself from shifting uncomfortably. His eyes could be so… intense.
You had a feeling that your words had surprised him, as the hostile environment seemed to dampen for a moment. Jimin looked like he was at a crossroad, unsure if he wanted to share what was truly on his mind or simply take his chances and kill you on the spot. You waited patiently, curious to have the hurricane of questions in your mind answered.
But when the silence continued to stretch, you realised that Jimin had decided to adopt your preferred method of communication. It was clear now that he had opted to leave you in the dark instead, refusing to reveal any kind of information to you. You felt a pang of annoyance hit your chest as you realised the burden of research would, once again, fall on your shoulders.
You took another step towards the edge of the roof, Jimin’s eyes still focused on you. It’s not like you were trying to hide it, because Jimin’s calculating gaze would not allow such a thing. The two of you knew there would be no deaths tonight. You were caught in a stalemate, one you would have left a while ago under normal circumstances, but nothing about Jimin was normal and maybe that was why you had stayed a lot longer than you should have.
But even though he looked almost devilish under the moonlight in those sinfully sultry clothes, holding tempting answers to questions he would never answer, you knew you couldn’t stay any longer. This night was over. There was nothing left here for you.
The roof’s edge brushed against your backside as you continued to aim your gun at Jimin’s chest, your gaze just as focused as his. You watched his expression soften for a moment before he spoke.
“When you figure it out, you’ll know where to find me, Y/N L/N.”
You didn’t know how he knew your name. You didn’t know what he wanted you to figure out. You didn’t know where you would find him, or if you would even want to find him after you figured out whatever you needed to. But you didn’t question it. A gut feeling told you that once you started searching, you’d be able to figure things out easy enough. All you had to do was get out of here so that you could let your curiosity do its thing.
So when you were finally balancing on the edge of the roof, taking Jimin’s gaze into your own, it wasn’t at all abnormal when you felt the drop of the fall in your stomach.
What was abnormal was the butterflies that continued to flutter even after you had landed on the pavement of the street.
The butterflies that continued to flutter even after you had made it safely back to your home.

Theories about AVA's new teaser
Well as we have all seen and for those who do not leave the link here https://youtube.com/shorts/t_E6pHNfyB4?feature=share
Spoiler alert, if you haven't seen the teaser yet I recommend that you go watch it before reading this and beforehand I mention that English is not my mother language.
At the beginning, he gives us a brief summary of everything that has happened in the previous AvA, and since this was perhaps months ago, then we are given the integration of a character we know.
victim.
(screenshot by @chorda-tendinea this person also talks about the victim theory in the teaser)
I have read several speculations about this and how he can be absolutely a victim but we must remember this. Victim cannot be the bad guy, since when Alan eliminated him in the first AvA and since it was the same computer that was broken/destroyed by The Dark Lord and The Chosen One, we also don't know if this same character can recover his memory, Because practically as much as Chosen and Victim are of the same design and both have different retrospectives, so the victim is a character with a blank memory or maybe he does have memory and will remember what Alan did before.
In the second scene we have chosen in the OUTERNET for those who don't know what the OUTERNET is (I think it's official? It appears in Wikipedia about AvA and AvM and others.) is a subspace in the Internet, where Internet stick figures come from and their home. This was the same location where the events of The Flashback and The Showdown happened. The Outernet and the Internet are separated by a grid-like barrier, with each cell leading to a specific device connected to the Internet through its IP address. This is where the real place outside the internet is revealed, and it takes place completely outside of Minecraft. We can see how Chosen looks lost and running from something or rather from someone since bullet casings or shots can be seen towards him.
Trying to run away from who is chasing him or rather who. Since it seems an association for the CherryBlossoms short that is given.
Also in the next part we can realize how TSC (The second coming) grabs a pencil and draws a line between them as if they were dividing them or had different opinions on a certain topic, maybe second didn't like something and I drew that line giving it a 'warning' I feel like it is.
In addition, as Chosen, he draws fire from his mouth as if he wanted to scare away something that is not there (here it is in the sense that the victim theory is more valid due to the spectral powers that people place on the victim) or incinerating projectiles that go towards he.
we can see how second appears, looking for chosen but in the first fragment he looks lying on the ground and then goes to another stage and is in the sights of one of the hunters who shoots. Could second also be another objective of that corporation? Let's also take into account that all the adventures of the color gang all the OUTERNET has seen it (it occurs in a flashback of AvM episode 30) that they are known and it may also be that to get to that place the video of The shoutdown was presented, where the brief fight between The Dark Lord and The Chosen is shown One where they travel through the internet and among them is YouTube with the already published video of them fighting.
Finally, we are even given The chosen one glitched, we are given to understand that he goes to Alan for help, as a theory that is mentioned that the chosen one goes to where Alan to fix his code due to the thorns of the virabot that did not affect him before and that now affects him which would be something strange, it should also affect second but somehow he has an antivirus for his powers that heal him even so maybe this is because of the hunters.
Maybe these hunters have certain bullets that can affect the Hollow stickman because let's remember that they are different from the OUTERNET ones since in the past, they were basically tyrants of the entire internet, they could have some prevention for any type of super powerful Hollow who wants to attack OUTERNET or stickcity again.
There are theories that The Dark Lord is not dead, it may be a yes and no, in the final chapter of AvA practically The second coming destroys TDL, dragging him with his green laser beam towards a mountain that explodes. We have no evidence that one Hollow can kill another and only the creator of said Hollow can eliminate it. If the chance is that he is not dead, THE DARK LORD would not forgive THE CHOSEN ONE, why?
Basically he betrayed him, TDL is evil and was created to destroy TCO are impregnated in his code to destroy TCO or everything good, in theory TDL is a villain and TCO can be an antihero because he was willing to kill TDL so that not continue with his plans, they are both good and bad by their code, so if he were alive, it would practically be for revenge against TCO for betraying him and joining (what he believes) their common enemy, Alan Becker.
Another theory that I want to give is that, it would be obvious that Purple and King (mango) would appear since both are mainly in stickcity, that is, OUTERNET, it could be that both are important in the margin that they know the city, being of help to chosen or the color gang .
Although the crazy theories they have in the Bingo Card make me laugh, some of them may be true without us realizing it.
There are many more deeper theories and variety but I wanted to give a bit of my theory on all of this.
bye-bye!!

tbh... I think that after I finished and disliked chain of thorns, my obsession with tlh just rapidly dissipated??? I don't know if sole the reason I maintained so much interest in the first palce was because I needed a conclusion to it or if I simply lost interest when it wasn't up to my standards whatsoever? But I'm glad that that isn't the case for most of the fandom regardless of whether they liked it or not judging by all the posts!
I am now ready for twp... which won't be out for years.... and I am definitely okay with that....not really..
I mean I think it was the lack of disclosure that made you so excited about chot and now that you have it... Welp. I personally loved chot because it was more fragmented in its treatment of the page time of the other characters --whereas I think that's what made you so disappointed. You wanted to see more herondaisy lol.
I'm excited for twp too! But tbh I'm not the biggest fan of faeries as cc writes them. All this 'mysterious beautiful and cruel people who can't lie and are oh so mystic and oh so blablabla' isn't my thing. So yeah, I really hope twp doesn't dwell on faeries *too much* because then it's going to be right there at the bottom of my tsc list of favourites along with tda

I think people just use it to refer to how Neil has a very focused POV. Like, they aren't wrong, but also, that's not what an unreliable narrator is. An unreliable narrator isn't one who strictly lies to the reader per se (or can be, but that's not the only definition). Usually, an unreliable narration is in first POV but considering AFTG's third POV narration is not by any means omnipotent and omnipresent, it's safe to say that it reads like first POV sometimes since it focuses on what the protagonist makes of the world around him.
It's unreliable sometimes in the way Neil unintentionally hides things from the reader. That can arguably be considered a portrayal of a prominent personality trait, or one could have argued it's just Nora's writing, but if you have read her other book, or if you've read TSC, you know that's not the case. Neil deliberately does not focus on things he deems irrelevant; we never find out physical characteristics of a lot of characters, we seldom get background details, scenes are very focused on details Neil deems relevant. Neil is always more focused on the things that matter the most at the moment; in the opening scene, we get a description of the exy court in great detail. We get a description of Kevin because it's who Neil dreaded he would see ever since Wymack mentioned him, and who is a fragment of the past he is running away from. In TKM, we get a lot more descriptions and focus on Andrew etc etc.
Also, there are many times when Neil doesn't give the reader the objective truth, mostly because he is a fully fleshed character who has biases. He isn't meant to be objective, but also the writing kind of convinces the reader that some things are unchanging constants. I've seen a lot of people go around using certain adjectives (e.g., Kevin is a coward) because Neil believes it to be true and a lot of people take it at face value. It's not his 'fault' per se, that's more on the writing in general, but it still is a trait that aligns with one of the traits of an unreliable narrator.
It isn't unreliable narration, but it does have *some* elements of it, enough that people just use it as a placeholder title for Neil. I still wouldn't refer to him as such, but I can see where the confusion originates from.
can anyone explain to me why neil is considered an unreliable narrator

Queen Of Air And Darkness Moodboard 💔
What if damnation is the price of true love? Innocent blood has been spilled on the steps of the Council Hall, the sacred stronghold of the Shadowhunters. In the wake of the tragic death of Livvy Blackthorn, the Clave teeters on the brink of civil war. One fragment of the Blackthorn family flees to Los Angeles, seeking to discover the source of the "blight" that is destroying the race of warlocks. Meanwhile, Julian and Emma take desperate measures to put their forbidden love aside and undertake a perilous mission to Faerie to retrieve the Black Volume of the Dead. What they find in the Courts is a secret that may tear the Shadow World asunder and open a dark path into a future they could never have imagined. Caught in a race against time, Emma and Julian must save the world of Shadowhunters before the deadly power of the parabatai curse destroys them and everyone they love.
The title, Queen Of Air And Darkness, refers both to the poem Her Strong Enchantments Failing by A.E. Houseman and Mab, the Queen of the Faeries in Romeo and Juliet.

Reflections: The Story of Tessa
This isn't an objective or even fair assessment of TSC, but because of how much Clockwork Angel and herongraystairs mean to me given that I read TID back when I was twelve, I sort of visualize the whole of TSC as the story of Tessa, with the different trilogies being punctuations, in the overarching scheme of things, in the Tessa Herongraystairs story.
I once said that Tessa marks the chronological inception of the story of the five families: the Herondales, Carstairs, Fairchilds, Blackthorns and Lightwoods. No family would have a lineage in the present day in its current state if not for Tessa and the Clockwork War and the way herongraystairs' played out chronologically. So, sometimes I just map out the whole TSC as the story of Tessa with the different books in TSC as linear checkpoints in the narrative of The Bestest Girl Ever aka Tessa Gray. It sort of looks like this when I break it down in my head:
Phase 1: Inception - This is TID (and the literal equivalent of the Big Bang for me from a linear perspective) yunno like the passion the love the power the sacrifices the desperation the growth of the characters in this series. I think the choices made in this trilogy set the course for everything.
Phase 2: Wessa - this is TLH. It's Wessa's Happily Ever After that we get to glimpse, ie, their follow-up to TID and the lifetime that Wessa got to have together: the ever-important Love Story No. 1 come to life. The end of this lifetime is marked by Learn About Loss and A Deeper Love from GOTSM for me, another punctuation. Lifetime No. 1 includes the Tessa Herondale story and that of a lineage she will produce that will reappear in her life in a century's time: it’s her family and experiences with Will, the story of her children, James and Lucie, and a Shadowhunter life in Edwardian London.
Phase 3: Impetus - This is City of Heavenly Fire aka, the book that changed the trajectory of Tessa and Jem's lives completely and the figure that shifted everything for them: Jace Herondale. Jem gets freed from the yin fen and his strife, and a whole new door gets opened because of this "other story of Fairchilds and Lightwoods and Herondales" and whatnot. In this way, you can picture the whole of TMI as the story of Jem's inevitable freedom from Brother Zachariah. From this angle, the epilogue of Clockwork Princess (*cries*) and the epilogue of City of Heavenly Fire are not just an ending or a beginning. It is sinply the midpoint in the narrative of Tessa Gray.
Phase 4: The Search for the Lost Herondale - This is both TDA and GOTSM. The Carstairs owe the Herondales. Tessa and Jem don't get to have their Happily Ever After just yet, because they need to find Kit. We know they love Kit with the pureness that parents just possess, but we also know that they see Kit as a little piece of Will that Jessa can still have in their lives (which mirrors the way Brother Zachariah in TLH was a means of having a little piece of the old Jem in Wessa's life). Cassie made Jessa work for their happily ever after here. The punctuation mark for me here is Through Blood, Through Fire and Forever Fallen from GOTSM.
Phase 5: Jessa - this is TWP. We haven't gotten much of it yet, but it's basically the Happily Ever After of Jessa that we've been waiting for since our Phase 1. This is the second follow-up to TID and the life that Jessa now get to have. This is Love Story No. 2 come to life, and it likely will be punctuated by the end of TWP. This is the story of Tessa Carstairs, one of a warlock's life in Devon with a family in Jem, Kit and Mina.
So to conclude, I'm a huge-ass Tessa stan okay, so sometimes I just see the whole of TSC as the story of Tessa with her two relationships and lifetimes - it's her love and family-building with Will and Jem just stretched across different epochs, each as milestones in a singular but linear character arc. I see Tessa Gray stepping onto the docks of London in TID as the inception of TSC from a narrative perspective and her relationships with Will and Jem as complements to each other.
James and Lucie are to Wessa what Kit and Mina are to Jessa. Shadowhunter Tessa is to Wessa what Warlock Tessa is to Jessa. Rescuing Kit (to have a bit on Herondale in their relationship) is to Jessa what having Brother Zachariah visit the London Institute every two minutes was to Wessa (what I mean here is that it was never possible to fully have both Jem and Will with her at once - Brother Zachariah was a fragment of the Jem Carstairs that Wessa loved, while Kit Herondale is a pretty souvenir of Will and the Herondale bloodline that Jessa so love).
Hence, Tessa's character arc is the spine of TSC when it comes to *major emotional stuff* for me. Amidst each individual book, the sheer size of herongraystairs is a penumbra always living in my peripherals. Tessa is an ever-lurking constant in the narrative of TSC itself, and I guess I sometimes just imagine TSC as a giant hallway: the paintings that hang at the sides are the individual TSC books, and Tessa Gray is the granite upon which they sit.

Fuck’s sake.
I’ve been formatting this story like it’s a book (and even tried to stay as true as possible to the published ones in the series it is a fanfiction of) and now it hits me like a truck that Ao3 works use a very different formatting style :(
Ah well. Problems for another time.

Idk if you really do meta so no worries if not but I’ve been studying loads of Arab history recently and I keep thinking about the magisterium and how it would interact with other world religions. Like the Arab world and Islam must still exist, and be close by. In the secret commonwealth there is a little bit of this but not loads. Just wondering what your thoughts are?
Oh, yes I absolutely do meta! lmao That’s basically all I do in this fandom! Thank you for the ask, I’ve given this theme some thought before, but never wrote it down.
First, I just want to say that my understanding of Islam is not extensive at all - we do not have a big muslim community in Brasil, especially not in my city which is super small - and despite all my research, it’s not enough to go super in-depth in the nuances of it. So, if you or anyone wants to add to this post, please feel free and encouraged to do so. I’m gonna offer you simply a very broad cultural take on the Magisterium and how it reacts to most religions.
I’m fairly certain Islam exists in Lyra’s world, tho. It’s not openly said so, but there are many instances in TSC that suggests so; what we don’t know is to which extent it exists. There is a direct mention to a niqab and there is a mention of a woman in Smyrna also wearing a headscarf (probably a hijab, maybe? there’s not a lot to tell), and as far as my knowledge goes, these are Arabic cultural/religious items. So, we know at least this part of the culture is there.
Something to keep in mind about Lyra’s world is that it’s a full-on globe, much like ours; that seems dumb when I say it lol but my point is, it’s too big for the Magisterium to reign alone as the sole master of religion with Christianity. Even in our world, the Catholic Church struggled in endless crusades against several different religions, including their own infighting over different variations of Christianity, and despite their best efforts, many religions still exist - some of them small, yes, and damaged by their influence.
There are far too many different cultures in the entire world for a single religion to successfully overtake the entire population. Human beings are so ridiculous random that some of us don’t even partake in religion, so it’s hard to see Christianity as almighty. It is, however, in Lyra’s world, a lot more powerful (think the Mighty Age of the Church in the past, when they consorted with entire kingdoms and their kings and controlled most aspects of life) and therefore it creates this idea of ‘they are alone in their power’. They’re definitely not, the Witches alone prove that; they have their own religion and gods. So do the bears. Their fantasy vibes conceal their cultural variation, but they are part of the world regardless, some of the witches even being pro-Magisterium. Again, random people being random.
Aside from these cultural groups, the general human population has the atheists, which are a divergent religious opinion as well and obviously, the Magisterium tries to suppress them hard - as they offer a lot of resistance to the dogma by improving science. By being more politically involved, the Church succeeds in controlling scientific progress, but still encounters resistance everywhere, no matter how feeble it is (yay, Oakley Street!). And the gyptians with their own secret commonwealth associations also suffer censorship and persecution, so the same probably happened with most religions.
Islam is not a small religion, and it’s also very old in terms of how long its been known to exist, so for it to seem so watered down to a simple cultural lifestyle (at least from what we see in TSC, with the dress ‘code’, I’m not sure if that’s the exact term for the niqab use, sorry if it’s not) probably means that the Magisterium succeeded in fighting its influence very strongly (probably the Crusades, I’m not super familiar with that subject either). That’s either before or after it became the Magisterium, since we can assume the Church was vaguely similar to our world’s version of it, up until John Calvin’s papacy and the Magisterium’s foundation. And because they succeeded, they managed to contain the strength of Islam and keep it mostly isolated from the Magisterium’s power region which is the entire Europe, pretty much. (we have little information on Africa, and we know next to nothing about the Americas and Oceania, so I assume the Church had different degrees of influence in these areas).
But as we move through the Levant in TSC, it’s possible to see how fragmented their influence seems to be depending on the country. They have the Patriarch’s group in Constantinople, but that is still very, very close to Europe, in a way (I mean it is Europe but also Asia, geography is not my strongest trait lmao). But as Lyra goes deeper and deeper, the less we see official ‘civilised’ Magisterium groups (like La Maison Juste or any types of priories or anything dogmatic) - we mostly see military forces spread thin (mostly and more likely CCD), which to me just seems like their way of trying to enforce the idea of their might to muslim people in the region. However, they don’t seem to have a strong hold on the region and the further you go to Asia, I believe you’d find a very widespread community of people who follow the Islam and not Christianity.
One thing though, is that I think that these major religions (according to wikipedia lol): Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism; they are all confined somewhat to specific areas instead of being spread like they are in our world. You wouldn’t find nowhere near as many muslins and buddhists in Central Europe, Western Europe as you would in the Middle East, for example. And this is because Lyra’s world is yet to suffer from a globalization process, (easier transport, communication system, culture assimilation) they are outdated, including the fact that the world seems to be set somewhere between end of Victorian period (late 1800s) up to the 50s, and according to estimates, the world population in 1950 was around 2.5 billion people as opposed to our 7 billion in 2020. So, it’s a lot less people, most of them very spread across the globe, these are all things to consider when thinking about how the Magisterium would handle these things.
China (The Celestial Empire of Cathay and Manchuria in Lyra’s world) is said to be a huuuuuuuuge empire, and they are also implied to be very lethargic politically, which means they probably isolated themselves keeping their own religion and culture very tightly away from the Magisterium. There is a passage about how it is believed the Emperor wouldn’t care much, because he was old and/or sick, if and when the Magisterium invaded the Karamakan desert, which is a Chinese territory, with several different nationalities of armies. So there is a lot to consider, but I think this gives room for us to see that the Magisterium is not entirely as almighty as it seems or as it tries to look like it is. Its reach has flaws and it mostly seems to operate in Europe and Europe-close regions, such as Northern Africa and parts of Asia.
So, I do think other religions still exist in Lyra’s world - despite not many being mentioned at all - and smaller religions like Judaism and Sikhism, for example, were probably persecuted a lot more due to their status, but in general I don’t believe any of them were entirely erradicated, despite, of course, being oppressed by the Magisterium.

blackstairs fanfiction!
read on archive of our own : https://archiveofourown.org/works/25244527
soooo i’m very new to tumblr and fanfiction but i decided to write a short story about emma and julian since they are my favorite ship in tsc. it’s just a little feel-good story where julian comforts emma as she deals with her fear of the ocean and the death of her parents...i hope you enjoy!!
The fear had been ingrained in her since the day she found her parents’ mutilated bodies washed up on the sand in Los Angeles. It didn’t matter that they didn’t actually die thrashing around in the waves, scrambling towards the surface, begging for air. It didn’t matter that they had been killed by a warlock on dry land and left lying around for someone to stumble upon. The fear was born that day, and the fear still lived on.
Staring out at the endless deep blue abyss, all she could feel was the fear — the tightening in her chest that made it hard to breathe, the beating of her heart steadily growing faster and faster and faster, so fast that she thought it was going to break through her chest but she couldn’t breathe or speak or —
“Emma. Emma, look at me.”
Emma tore her gaze from the sea and turned towards the voice. It was that voice, his voice, that had always been able to reach her when no one else’s could. It was his words that brought her comfort — they always had and they always would. From the secrets whispered in her ear when they were just children to the vow of loyalty and friendship that he proclaimed to her in their parabatai ceremony to the promises he breathed against her skin every morning when they woke up in each other’s arms — that he would never leave her, that he would always protect her, and that she was his happiness, his refuge, his universe, his Emma. Even now, years and years later, it was his voice that she loved to hear the most.
“Emma, love, it’s okay. I’m here, I’m here, I’m here.”
Over and over he whispered those two words against her as he held her close, his breath stirring the blond strands of her hair.
“Jules,” was all she could manage to say.
Responding to her voice, he began to pull away from their embrace, but Emma tightened her hold on him so that they were pressed up against each other even closer than before. She wasn’t ready to talk — she just needed him to hold her. Her skin tingled as he ran his hands up her arms that were wrapped tightly around his waist. He started at her elbow, tracing soothing lines up to her shoulder before wrapping his arms around her fully, letting one hand rest in the center of her back while the other found its way into her hair. She heard him softly telling her that she was safe, that everything was alright, that he loved her and would always protect her, but she felt so far away. All she could hear was the crash of the waves banging against the shore again and again and again. She felt like she was drowning and it didn’t matter that she was on dry land, up on the porch of their little house that sat quite a ways from the water. She had to get away from it all or she was going to drown.
“Can we go inside?” she whispered against Julian’s shirt. He smelled like he always did — cloves, soap, and salt — and she knotted her hands in the fabric as he lifted her up from the waist to carry her inside. She brought her legs around his torso and crossed her feet so that they rested against the small of his back. She squeezed her thighs so that she was wrapped so tightly around him that she worried for a second that he might not be able to breathe. It wasn’t that she feared that he would drop her — Julian was strong and she trusted him more than anyone in the world — but her ears still rang with the beat of the ocean waves and he was the only thing that kept her from falling under their dark cover.
Julian sat down on the edge of the bed and scooted back so that he was leaning against the pillows layered in front of the headboard. Emma was now seated in his lap with her knees on either side of his waist. Despite the change in position, her arms were still locked around his neck and her forehead rested against his shoulder. He traced circles on her back and whispered soothingly into her hair. Everything about him — every word, every touch — was soft and gentle.
Emma could hear Kieran’s voice in her mind telling Julian that he had a ruthless heart. She could see herself standing in front of him when they were still parabatai telling him that he had scared her, the way he crafted lies with ease and delivered them without batting an eye. But this Julian, the one who held her now, he was gentle. Because Julian was gentle with the things that he loved.
Emma knew that his heart wasn’t ruthless, it was simply broken — just as hers was. They both had lost so much and endured pain that no one should have to endure. It left them shattered, simply fragments of who they could have been if their parents were alive, if there had never been a war, and if they had been normal parabatai — parabatai that had never fallen in love. But their parents had died, and they had fought in a war, and they had fallen in love, but together they picked up the broken pieces and they each served as the glue that held the other together. It was love that turned Julian from an innocent boy into a man — a man who killed his own father to protect his siblings, who raised four kids when he was only twelve years old, who watched as his sister died in his arms, who started wars and won them no matter the cost. It was love that made Julian ruthless. But it was love that made him gentle too.
Eventually Emma’s heart rate slowed and her grip on Julian loosened. Sensing this change, Julian spoke.
“Em?” he whispered.
The years they had spent together allowed them to hear the words left unspoken between them. Emma knew that he was doing more than simply asking if she was ready to talk. In just that one syllable, there were hidden promises: that if she was ready to talk then he was ready to listen and that if she wasn’t, then he would hold her close until the time came. All she wanted was to stay wrapped up in Julian’s arms and let him tell her over and over that she was safe and that he loved her until her fears faded away, replaced by his soft voice and his strong hands. But she was a warrior. This was simply another battle that she had to fight.
Emma took a deep breath to ground herself and squeezed her eyes shut as she lifted her forehead from the safety of Julian’s shoulder. She kept her eyes closed as she straightened her spine so that she sat upright in Julian’s lap. Even when she felt him push a lock of hair behind her ear and even when he kissed the tops of her eyelids with a tenderness that made Emma’s heart squeeze in her chest because she didn’t deserve this boy or the love and patience that he showed her; she didn’t deserve someone as good as Julian; she was broken beyond repair and she didn’t deserve someone who was so willing to break himself apart to put her back together — even then, she kept her eyes closed. It was not until she heard his voice that she let herself see his face.
“Emma, look at me,” he breathed.
The first thing she saw was the pair of blue-green eyes that she knew so well starting back at her. She remembered the night on the beach when she had looked in his eyes and seen pure fear and desperation. In some ways it had been terrifying to see him so out of control — Julian was supposed to be the level-headed one who kept her grounded and tempered her blazing fire. But that night the walls he had built so carefully around himself fell apart in front of her.
“We are bound together Emma,” he had said. “Bound together — I breathe when you breathe, I bleed when you bleed, I’m yours and you’re mine, you’ve always been mine, and I have always, always belonged to you!”
Now when she looked at him his eyes were clear — the wall had been gone for so long now — and his gaze upon her was steady. There was overwhelming gentleness in those blue-green windows mixed with a tinge of sadness at seeing Emma in pain. Without thinking, she ran her thumbs under his eyes and down his cheeks as though she were wiping away his tears. She was the one with wet cheeks, however, not him.
He smiled softly and his eyes fluttered shut at her touch for just a second before he was looking at her again.
“Ems, talk to me,” he pleaded and the softness of his voice broke whatever wall was holding her together.
“It terrifies me,” she cried, choking on her tears. “I can’t think or breathe or move and I just imagine them dying over and over again and I never got to say goodbye and I —”
A sob escaping from her throat interrupted her spill of words and she quickly clasped her hand over her mouth to cut it off. Julian tightened his arms around her and pulled her closer to him so that she was curled up against his body. He kissed her temple and spoke to her softly promising once again that she was safe, that he was there and he wasn’t going to leave, that above all else he loved her and everything was going to be okay. When the sobs that racked her body subsided, Julian spoke again.
“Your parents loved you, Emma. And I wish they were here.” He planted a kiss on her shoulder before continuing. “God, I wish they were here. I wish they all were here, that we could have all made it out in one piece.” He took a shuddering breath and Emma knew that he was thinking about Livvy and remembering her sweet smile and bright eyes that lost their light when she died in Julian’s arms. She knew that there would always be a hole in Julian’s heart where Livvy should be and that there was a part of him that would always be broken. No matter how hard she tried, that piece could only be healed by his sister’s touch — a touch that he would never experience again.
It was her turn to comfort him now, to save him from the thoughts that ran through his mind each night; the thoughts that drove him into a spiral of guilt and grief so deep that it left him frenzied and lost whenever he resurfaced. She pushed herself up onto her knees so that he had to crane his neck back slightly to look at her face. She pressed her lips to his forehead and wrapped her arms around him, resting one hand at the back of his neck and the other in the curls of his hair. They were both so broken; scarred by their trauma so deeply that it woke them up in the middle of the night sweating and screaming and breathing heavily, but they were always there to comfort one another. Sometimes it was Julian holding Emma in his lap while the nightmare subsided and other nights it was Emma shaking Julian awake, pulling him out of the dark places that his mind took him, grabbing his face in her hands and waiting until his eyes cleared with the realization that the nightmare wasn’t real but Emma who sat in the bed beside him was.
They were broken yes, but they were also strong. Even after losing so many, they still chose to love, and it was the love they had for one another that soared above it all. They were strong in that they still found joy and laughter despite the sadness they had endured and they still saw hope for a better future even with the darkness of their past casting a shadow over them. They were strong. It was what they whispered to each other on the nights when the nightmares came — they were strong, they were okay, they had each other and they would make it through.
Julian pulled away and looked up at Emma, twirling a lock of her hair around his finger. He looked her in the eyes and spoke, no longer allowing himself to be comforted when he knew that Emma needed it more.
“I know that it scares you.” His voice was steady and his gaze upon her never wavered. “But we fear things because we value them. For so many years you believed that it was the ocean that took your parents, that they died hidden underneath the surface in endless darkness. And so you feared the ocean because it took the two people you loved most in the world. And it may take years before that fear subsides, but you are strong, Emma Carstairs. You are the strongest and the bravest person I know and when the day comes that you want to dip your feet in the water, I will stand with you.”
He leaned up to brush his lips against her jaw and then her neck before settling back down again. He took her face in his hands so that she was looking straight into his eyes. “But until then,” he whispered, “we will stay on dry land and I will stand with you here, too.”
With a small tilt of his head he brought his lips to hers. He let his hands travel down her back until they found a place to rest on her hips while Emma brought her hands up to cup his face as she deepened the kiss. She ran her thumbs across his cheeks and allowed herself to get lost in the taste of his lips. She opened her mouth over his, breaking the kiss for just a second before connecting with him again. It was slow and gentle — exactly what both of them needed. They loved each other with a passion that burned inside of them like fire, but sometimes a brush of lips and a whispered “I love you” was all they needed to keep themselves from falling apart.
Emma pulled away, at last, still holding Julian’s face in her hands. Their foreheads were pressed together and Emma looked down upon Julian’s closed eyes, his dark eyelashes resting on his cheekbones. He looked so young, so innocent — there was no ruthlessness in this boy. But no matter how he looked, Emma knew that he had grown up too quickly in order to take care of his siblings and that his innocence had been stolen long ago, replaced by blood on his hands. Julian Blackthorn was ruthless, but only to those who threatened what he loved. And Emma was the one he loved the most.
“Julian,” Emma whispered into the space between them.
He mumbled a soft “Hm?” and opened his eyes in response to her voice, a small smile playing at the corner of his lips.
“I love you,” Emma said quietly.
He brought his hand up to push her hair out of her face and allowed a single golden strand to flow across his palm as his fingers traveled down to the frayed ends. “I love you too, Emma,” he whispered back.
They sat in the silence for a while, arms wrapped around each other as the sound of waves crashing against the shore seeped into their little house. Finally, Emma spoke.
“Jules?”
“ Yeah?”
“Can we go put our feet in the water?”
He slowly moved his forehead away from hers and looked at her closely for a long time, running his finger across her face, tracing the shape of her lips. He couldn’t help but smile. This was his Emma — a warrior who faced her fears head-on and never considered even for a second that they would get the final say.
“Are you sure?” was all he said.
“Yeah,” she replied and her mouth slowly grew into the shape of a smile. It was that smile that brought Julian a feeling of happiness so strong and so deep that sometimes he thought that it would kill him. But no, he would survive it, he would survive all of it — all the wars, all the battles, all the demons in the world. You could turn a thousand soldiers against him and he would come away victorious just for the chance to see that smile one more time.
“Yeah, I’m ready. All I need is you,” she said.
“You have me,” he promised her. “Always and forever, you have me.”

After browsing the TSC rp community tags, I noticed that finding fellow TSC rpers who are active and indie ( as opposed to group members ) isn't as easy as it once was. So, I'm making this post to try to see how many of us there actually are these days. If your muse is from the THE SECRET CIRCLE universe ( regardless of whether your blog is a single muse account or a multi ), could you please like this? REBLOGS are even better since I'd really like to find as many as possible.

TOKYO GHOUL ENDED AND I AM EMOTIONAL
Like, it legitimately ended. That’s it. No Part 3. I mean there IS material for potential Part 3 but this is the definitive closure to the story.
AND GUESS WHAT? IT AIN’T A TRAGEDY?!
I know people are always gonna be divided on this, like I’m seeing actual hate in the tag, and I guess that’s to be expected, this always happens when a popular series is ending. But I don’t think this particular ending deserves so much hate, and hopefully there are more people who are happy with it. Personally, I will FOREVER be thankful for this chapter! It’s not perfect, but then again, no ending is. Yes, it could’ve wrapped up more loose ends, but I think it did enough. What’s more important is that it’s not bad (in MY opinion ok chill thanks). No, it’s SO far from bad! For me, it’s an overall GREAT ending, more or less along the lines of how I always imagined TG ending. I just never really believed it WOULD end this way, like I was legit afraid Ishida would go for the tragedy thing instead, but hey, thanks anime gods!
I think most people expected a tragic ending with Kaneki dying and everything being hopeless or bittersweet at most, but we actually got an extremely pure and happy chapter, with a neat bow on top, and I for one am LOVING it! Because I’ve been following TG since 2014, and I’ve wanted a happy ending for Kaneki and all of these characters for so long, and now I’m finally getting the payoff for all those years of suffering, don’t TOUCH ME I AM FRAGILE!
It still feels kinda weird though, seeing genuinely happy things happen in this manga, it’s like a dream I never thought would come true, but it did! Obviously, you can’t please everyone, and there will always be people who will hate this ending because they envisioned it differently, but I think at the very least the ending shouldn’t ruin the rest of the story, for anyone! Of course, people will have to take some time to recover before they decide exactly how they feel about the series after its ending, but I mean, we all stayed for the ride, didn’t we? And although this final arc - for whatever reason - felt rushed toward the end and stuff, I think Ishida made the most out of the final chapter, considering where the previous chapter left off!
So we have TSC instead of CCG now, and good riddance, I hated that organization lol, although I loved a lot of the characters who were a part of it. I really like how it’s emphasized in this chapter that nothing is really over yet, the fight still continues. The difference is that there’s a new enemy of both humans and ghouls now. As expected, for the two species to finally coexist, a mutual enemy was necessary. But even though a lot of ghouls are now living peacefully with humans, thanks to the two races’ joint effort, it’s not like everyone is willing to make peace. Speaking of peace, I like how we have the title “peacekeepers” now instead of investigators (it reminds me of one of the home worlds from the Spyro the Dragon game, but that’s just my own nostalgia speaking), although it’s just in Tokyo, because apparently, other branches of CCG are still active and fighting the ghouls that are disrupting the peace. Hopefully the investigators have a new policy now, and they don’t attack friendly ghouls nowadays. Of course, there are always gonna be bad feelings from both sides, but hopefully the hostility isn’t as strong anymore. I actually wish the chapter had gone into a bit more depth and explained the nature of an investigator’s job in this new world, since some of the characters we know stayed investigators, but oh well.
Basically, both species have obviously made incredible progress in the past six years, but it’s not all flowers and rainbows, not EVERYONE is happy with this new world. And that’s so very like real life. What I think is great about this chapter is how it builds this new society as broadly as possible, and tries to explain as much as possible from different angles, because so many things have changed, it’s practically entirely new worldbuilding. It’s surely only a glimpse of what this new world looks like, but I believe it’s as detailed as the 30-page format allows. And I actually LIKE how we aren’t given everything, I feel like that’s very much Ishida’s style, leaving some things open. Because, nothing is really concluded, this fictional world didn’t just magically reach Nirvana, nor did it completely crumble down; it’s just transformed, it’s still transforming, PANTA RHEI MY DUDES! The overall theme of this chapter goes perfectly with the message of Kaneki’s speeches about the world and the never-ending change. I just really, REALLY like how the chapter emphasizes that constant change. And I like how you get this sense of cause & consequence from the chapter, as it’s made very clear that, while the Dragon war was definitely horrible, it actually allowed for new technologies to develop, which ultimately led to a better world, a changed world. We’re definitely meant to see this chapter as a closure, or actually more of an afterword, but we’re also urged to realize this is not the end of the story; the story goes on, and we were only shown a fragment of it. Like, that’s real poetic stuff right there my man.
Now, I also have a few things to say about some of the characters featured in the chapter. There are so many, I can’t even remember half of what was said about most of them, although I reread the chapter three times. It’s just extremely text-heavy. So I’ll just list the things that were important to me personally, mostly the things concerning the main characters. Otherwise, this post would get waaaay too long.
We actually got these little notes about pretty much every character I can think of (man this manga has so many CHARACTERS), telling us what all of them have been up to during the six-year timeskip. My only real complaint is that there was no mention of Eto, even though the previous chapter didn’t really bother to explain what exactly happened to her. It would’ve been fine if she’d never even come back at all, but this way, it kinda feels like the author just forgot to mention her lol. Maybe I’m just reading too much into it, it’s probably just that when the Dragon died, so did she. I was also hoping for a Rize mention, since she was such an important figure in Kaneki’s life, but at least we got a mention of the Washuu clan. And that was actually really sad, but it’s a fitting outcome, the main branch going extinct. Because first Furuta died, and then Rize shortly after, although her destiny had already been sealed much earlier. The fate of these two, and especially Rize, foreshadowed this outcome; Rize & Furuta equals Washuu inside the narrative, and when they disappeared, the Washuu they symbolized had to disappear as well.
Ok, I lied, I have another real complaint, and it actually bugged me much more than the lack of Eto mention. And that is, we only got a cameo of Akira and Amon, and no textual explanation of what was going on with them. We actually didn’t even see their faces, when literally 384576 other minor characters made an appearance. Like, they’re super major characters, what’s up with that? I guess we’re just supposed to assume they got married and lived happily ever after, but other than that, what else? Like what do they even do these days? Even just one sentence for both of them would’ve sufficed, and I really hope it’s included in the volume version of the chapter. Like, it didn’t really ruin the chapter for me, but I kinda felt like I was left hanging. And they deserved to have their faces shown one last time for closure, why all the mystery? They were both pretty important in the final arc too. Maybe we’ll get an omake about them in the final volume, who knows, but they still should’ve been shown in the last chapter. Well, I’ll admit it IS kinda poetic how we only see their backs and how it’s implied they live peacefully nowadays, and this closure IS kinda fitting for them, but still, I’m a little salty. Another thing I felt was missing was a note about Touka. I was really looking forward to learning where she ended up, other than being a mother and a wife. I mean, it’s still amazing that she was blessed enough to be able to have a normal life with her family, but the girl also wanted to do things. So yeah, it’s another thing that I hope will be added in the volume version.
Other than that.... I think pretty much everyone else was mentioned, but then again, I am not a machine and I’m pretty sure I’m forgetting a lot of characters already, so I’ll just talk about what really made me happy personally. I really liked how the narrator of this chapter was Hide, it allowed for a kind of outside look at the very end of the story. It wouldn’t be the same if it were Kaneki who was narrating, and anyway, having slept for weeks, he wouldn’t even be able to tell us the full story of the events that took place right after the Dragon war. Hide was the perfect choice for the narrator, because he’s so involved with everyone and everything. We even got Hide’s very summarized backstory, and although I believe he deserved to be exposed more thoroughly much earlier, I’m thankful Ishida didn’t completely forget about it, and that he told us basically all we needed to know. It would’ve been nice to know more, since Hide is one of the main characters, he could’ve been given a more meaningful backstory, but as it stands now, it seems that his story isn’t really crucial to his character or the series overall, so I guess I’ll take it. One thing that made me extremely happy about Hide’s ending is that he’s literally travelling and changing the world, he’s like some kind of hero history books will talk about. That’s the ending Hide deserved! And DAMN, he deserved to stay Kaneki’s friend for the rest of his life! They’re finally together, and together they’ll stay, and my heart is so full right now! Oh and another thing. I’m pretty sure the part of the translation where it says Hide was adopted by fatherS was just a typo or a mistranslation, since there is no plural form of nouns in the Japanese language (so you can’t always tell if it’s father or fathers), but it was nice believing Hide had gay dads for a while, even if it was a short while lol rip.
I like what Tsukiyama ended up doing, he’s helping rebuild the society and his family, basically being super important and leading the entire ghoulkind, more or less. The boy will go down in history! I knew he had it in him, his character growth has been incredible, and he’s finally getting the recognition he deserves! But I still think wedding planning would’ve been the ideal career choice for him.... Also, the way he spoils Touken’s daughter later in the chapter is ADORABLE! And he has different hairstyles in these two scenes, I like the second one better. And there’s Banjou, awww he’s also a really important figure now, I’m happy for him! Old man Marude got a new hairstyle too, and a beard, why am I not surprised? And he’s still the boss, so that’s cool. Ah, Kiyoko being such a forever single mood lmao. Ui boy’s doing his best and I am proud of him, but he’s missing his girlfriend rip... As for Hirako, damn, the boy looks so distant, I hope he’s doing ok. Well, he’s finally living a normal life, even if he’s detaching himself from his comrades. And wow Yusa really out here at the top of his game, both his career and his looks, damn.
The Qs also got their own satisfactory endings, I believe. I nearly sobbed at Urie searching for Shirazu’s body, this boy’s amazing development and how he constantly goes back to Shirazu in his mind has seriously cost me a few years of life. And then him visiting Shirazu’s grave, with Shirazu’s sister there! I was hoping to see her, we finally know what her condition is, and can sleep peacefully knowing Shirazu would be so incredibly happy that she’s all up and healthy again! It’s kinda sad how Mutsuki seems to not be around as much, but at least he chose his own path that hopefully fulfills him. And it’s super sweet how he sends Touka apples, like I was totally not expecting that, but I am so glad they are on good terms now and Mutsuki is doing much better emotionally and mentally. Also, I was totally expecting like a Moment™ between Mutsuki and Urie but I guess not lol... I don’t really like actively ship it, but I like their relationship, they could have gotten more of a wrap-up, so there’s that I guess... And then there’s Saiko, who has just... become so beautiful? Like what the hell, she’s just so gosh darn pretty? And is apparently living her best life, so you go Saiko! And she’s such a CUTIE when they’re visiting Touken family, calling Touka “mama-wife” and everything, baby you are my ANGEL!
And then comes the Suzuya squad, and they’re all doing fantastic, bless. And then Suzuya and Shinohara and I jUST! I’ve been waiting for this scene for so long, and I am SO glad it didn’t just happen off-panel during the timeskip! We actually got to see it, got to experience it first-hand, the full emotional impact of it! And let me tell you, this is the scene that FINALLY made me sob! Wtf so many years of suffering paid off, and Suzuya crying at the top of his lungs, but out of happiness, paralleling that panel where he was crying out of despair in Part 1 of the manga? I’M CRYING! AND THEN! Suzuya’s also like the literal star of this whole TSC project, YOU GO LITTLE MAN! AND THEN! And then Naki and Miza, and just... WOW! Miza, how much D can you even take?? NINE KIDS??? I mean good for you, I love you both, but DAMN! Man, I’m just so happy they’re both alive, I seriously thought Naki was a goner until a few weeks ago, so seeing him and Miza happily together like this is so surreal. And then we have another very important ship, Nishiki and Kimi, and damn Nishiki is either having a bad hair day or that’s simply a bad haircut lol. Like dude seriously, go back to the fantastic hairstyle you were rocking before. But anyway, I’m so happy seeing him and Kimi together and MARRIED? BLESS! Been waiting for that for literal years! Kimi is doing such an amazing job, helping create a more peaceful society, even though she’s using her boyfriend as test subject in the process lol. LOOK AT MY GIRL CHIE YO! She be going PLACES! SEIDOU! DUDE! Why you gotta be an Edgelord like that, please come back! Well, he’s probably too broken to fit into this new society, so he’s working out ways to live his life the best he can, helping in his own way. But don’t make such a sad face Seidou! I was hoping to see a bit more of him, but I guess we’re not meant to know much. He’s a loner, a mystery even for the readers.
And now... AYAHINA IS CANON MY DUDES! THAT IS ALL! Listen, I don’t even like... hardcore ship it, but it’s just plain obvious, it’s just right THERE! Hinami is playful, Ayato is tsundere, and love is in the air! PEACE! Also, Ayato sure saved his brother-in-law’s ass back there, just like we’d hoped he would, he really does care! Hinami is a teacher *sobs* Kaneki you taught her well, and Ayato’s this cool Main guy, look how far he’s come! I’m just so happy for both of them, I’ve been rooting for these kids for so long, Hinami is finally free from all her burdens and is genuinely Happy, and being Ayato is no longer suffering, can y’all believe??? And then we have Yoriko and Takeomi and a new addition to their family, how precious is that! Now, I would’ve liked for those notes about each character to say something about Yoriko’s relationship with Touka, I mean they were best girlfriends! And their friendship was kinda huge, I think it deserved at least a mention. Just something like “She visits Touka regularly” would’ve been enough. Ishida probably just forgot lol, the poor man, having to think about so many characters and their entire lives, I don’t blame him for just randomly forgetting to include some things. I just think this is one of those things that are kinda hard to forget, considering how meaningful this friendship was for Touka, and how it even played a big role in the final arc of the manga. But hey, maybe there’s hope that it’ll be included in the volume version lol. Or maybe in the omake! Ishida you have the opportunity to give us such pure, domestic omake, you’ve never failed us before, do your magic!
YOMO!!! RIBBONS! YOMO WITH RIBBONS IN HIS HAIR!!!!!! This transcends all the levels of adorable of anything ever! We were right, Yomo is the most doting uncle in existence, and it’s all I ever wanted! And damn, he still bangable af. AND THE SMOL TOUKEN BABY! Well, she’s actually like six now, BUT BABY! THE TOUKEN BABY IS A GIRL is this Ishida spoiling the shippers again? And she looks like a tiny Haise, can y’all believe?! Even Haise practically made a cameo, through this precious child. Amazing. I guess she has no name, so we’ll just keep calling her Pleasure-chan, sorry baby, it’s your parents’ fault. And I guess the Clowns are just doing their thing as usual. Clowns always have the last laugh, so of course this new society has nothing on them, they’re just laughing at everything and gathering for drinking games on Friday nights. Uta is still the Sasuke to Yomo’s Naruto, I guess some things never change.
AND THEN TOUKA MY LOVE! She looks so pretty, so beautiful, so dazzling, so fresh! I am so happy for her and so proud! She finally has a peaceful home and a happy family she’s always dreamed of having, IT’S WHAT SHE DESERVES! And on top of that, she has all these amazing friends who come to visit her! So many good things for my favorite character, thank you Ishida for my live! Again, I would’ve liked to know more about what she’s doing in life, but I can still hope the omake will tell me that lol. I’m just satisfied knowing she’s living her absolute best life, after struggling so much through life, suffering from such an early age, having to deal with abandonment issues her entire life, and then selflessly waiting, AND IT PAID OFF MY GIRL IT ALL PAID OFF!
AND THEN COMES OUR BOY! OUR BOY! The lonely boy who has gone through so much pain, lived his own tragedy for most of his life, never even imagining he would ever find joy or fulfillment or that he would ever heal. YET HERE HE IS! HERE IS THAT BOY WHO ONLY WANTED TO GO ON A DATE BUT GOT HIS LIFE TURNED UPSIDE DOWN INSTEAD! And now his life is finally, FINALLY fixed and things are OKAY and he is so LOVED and has a FAMILY! And yes, he’s definitely not 100% ok, and he never will be, but he has matured so much and come so far in life, he’s able to at least be at peace with himself and live a somewhat normal life. IT’S WHAT HE DESERVES! Like, I know we were all expecting Kaneki to face the consequences of his actions. From the narrative point of view, it seemed logical. But looking at it now, it wasn’t really necessary. Kaneki’s already learned his lesson. And he’s not living a life free of burdens either. He’s still an active part of the collective effort to recreate the world, and the chapter gave us a glimpse into his mind and his feelings. He is still unsure and conflicted, and it’s frustrating not being able to do anything, but he has to live with it. Finally, Kaneki has to settle for “there are things I cannot do”. He has to settle for a new and different life, and learn to live with himself and everything his actions caused. The consequences follow him every day, in the form of this new conflict. He has already suffered enough, is torturing him more really that necessary, just because he’s “the tragic protagonists”? Characters have gotten away with worse things, just saying. Also, judging from the marks on his face and neck, it seems he’s still having some trouble with his RC levels and healing and stuff, I just hope it doesn’t affect his body in bad ways. I mean he’s damaged his body so many times, it would be unrealistic not to expect consequences, but at least it’s not serious. Otherwise it would’ve been addressed. I mean, judging from Touka’s round tummy, it appears he managed to fill her up yet again, so yeah, he fine. (All the condom jokes can end now, Touka and Kaneki are nothing compared to Naki and Miza.)
In the end, Kaneki’s story ends on a positive, hopeful note, although still somewhat bittersweet. And it pulls the whole narrative, with all the other characters’ individual stories, along with it. The cycle of tragedy is finally broken. And personally, I just couldn’t be happier! I’ve been hoping for this kind of ending for so long, I literally never really wanted a tragic ending! And don’t give me that “Happy ending = Bad ending” NAH! You can’t deny that happy endings can be good if written right! It’s true that the general profile of Tokyo Ghoul screams “TRAGEDY” but that’s exactly why I think this ending is a beautiful twist! You might have expected it, you might have not, but it’s certainly a neat contrast to the rest of the story, but instead of ruining the “vibe” imo it worked unexpectedly well! Now, if your problem doesn’t lie with the type of ending we got, but the execution of it, then I guess we’re just not on the same page lol...
Now, this ending certainly wasn’t 100% happy, which is GREAT, but it’s still very hopeful and kind of bittersweet. All in all, I’d say it’s a beautifully positive closure to an incredibly sad story. It gives a positive message, that things can sometimes work out even if life seems hopeless. We may not always have control over it, but we can damn well do our very best! And it’s not unrealistic, it’s just real life! And it’s not your typical “happily ever after “ type of ending either, because, as I said earlier, the story isn’t actually over! The author simply decided to stop telling it at this particular point. And by teasing some future events, he made this chapter feel not just like an ending, but also a new beginning, a very hopeful one at that. And one that leaves infinite possibilities for potential Part 3, if Ishida ever feels like writing one, though right now I doubt it. I think he’s done with this series, and what an amazing job he’s done, for seven years!
Well, I think that’s probably all I wanted to say lol. My emotions are all over the place and Im practically slamming my keyboard in excitement right now, so I’m probably forgetting a lot of other thoughts that were going through my mind as I was reading the chapter. But this encapsulates most of it, probably.
Tokyo Ghoul has been one of my main fandoms for four years now, and I’m so thankful for all the time and effort Ishida put into this work! It’s so unique and means a lot to me! It has helped me through some tough times in life (which is probably hard to believe since the story itself is sad but yeah...), so seeing that all the suffering wasn’t in vain, and that it all led to THIS, is just so amazingly fulfilling and satisfying!
Thank you for everything Ishida-sensei, get some rest now!
