maevelena marriage counseling, #1
hello; one of many scenarios that plagues my mind with these characters is imagining them in couple's therapy together. i have this snippets going in my head often, but they are very talk-y and don't necessarily have the cohesion or narrative drive to comprise a proper Fanfiction story, at least the way I like to write them. but after at least one (1) person expressing interest, I've decided to share some of them here on tumblr, in a very informal format. also as an exercise in sharing things and not overthinking or being a perfectionist. thus, these snippets are solely in dialogue form, and not too deep. technically, these are set in the aftermath of my long post-s3-maeve fic, so there may be slight spoilers for that story. anyways, here you go!
Maeve (hereafter “M”) and Elena (hereafer “E”) sit next to one another on their couch, queueing up a video appointment with Elena’s longtime therapist, Constance Alvarez (better known as “Connie,” herefter “C”).
E: Hi, Connie. Thank you so much for being open to this.
C: It’s my pleasure. I must say, it’s a bit exciting to finally meet your partner…
E: (a little giddy) my wife.
M: Hi there. Maeve, but you knew that. I’ve heard plenty about you too.
C: Oh? Good things I hope…
E: of course. … I’m so excited. This is so great. I’ve wanted to do this for years… and Maeve finallllly agreed… as a wedding gift.
M: Right. So, let’s get this done.
C: You seem a bit uncomfortable.
M: I’m not.
E: she’s a little nervous, because it’s her first time doing therapy.
M: well, I’m not, and also, it’s not. Let’s just get to whatever we’re supposed to talk about.
C: Well, is there anything you’d like to talk about?
(Maeve looks to Elena, expectantly.)
E: Go ahead.
M: what do you mean, go ahead? This was your idea, what did you want to do therapy about? Whatever it is I did that upset you, just get it out there so we can go over it and be done.
E: That’s not what this is about. It’s not a punishment.
M: It’s not?
C: Maeve, it sounds like you’ve had some negative experiences with therapy in the past.
M: not exactly positive, no.
C: would you mind telling me what happened?
E: Yeah, when did you even go to therapy?
M: Every few years, Vought had mandated “wellness checks” with the Seven. Which were basically just a show of how much they cared about the mental health of all their ‘assets’, started after that poor bastard Jetpack offed himself by flying into the stratosphere… Plus, every time I was in rehab, mandatory sessions. Each time some different quack. First guy who promised he was soooo good at keeping secrets from all the celebrity patients he had, proved it by giving examples…
E: you don’t have to worry about that, now. You can trust Connie. She’s been keeping your secrets for almost a decade now.
M: Of course. I appreciate that. You seem nice, and highly qualified, and I appreciate that you’ve helped Elena a lot. I just don’t really see the point.
E: it’s to—
C: Elena, if you wouldn’t mind. … Maeve, I’m curious as to why you came here, if you don’t see any point to it.
M: Elena asked me to.
C: Is that all?
M: I know it’s supposed to be helpful, or something. But I don’t get the point of paying you $150 an hour just to sit here and talk to us or make us talk to each other.
E: maeve!
M: I’m sorry. That sounded rude, and I didn’t mean it that way. The money isn’t an issue and I’m sure you’re worth it… I’ve certainly been paid more money to do stupider things. I mean, stupid things. What you do isn’t...(Connie bemused, unaffected) What I mean is, I don’t get why now, after we’ve already got so good at the honesty thing, why we need some paid referee.
E: she’s not here to be a referee. And this isn’t a band-aid.
M: then why are we here? People do marriage therapy when their marriage is failing.
E: that’s not true. Lots of couples do it on a regular basis, just to keep things smooth and ease any potential sore spots before they get too bad.
M: name one.
E: Isa and Antonio.
M: fuck, they DO have an incredible marriage…
E: It’s not that I wanted therapy because our relationship is doing badly, it’s that… we’re strong lately, and I want to stay that way. So I think it’s good if we talk…
M: but we talk all the time.
E: but having someone else here to offer new perspectives… it’s… you just have to give it a chance and see. I remember I was just as reluctant as you at the start…
C: that’s true.
E: but working with Connie has helped so much. And it’s a huge factor in me being able to be in this strong relationship with you… and has made me feel so much better as an individual… and I want that for you too. I know you think this is your wedding present to me, but it’s my wedding present to you, too.
M: So? … I’m here, aren’t I?
C: Yes, you are. … And one thing Elena didn’t mention, about my role here, is that if you aren’t feeling anything in particular you want to bring up, I’m here to get the ball rolling. So let’s start with something nice. How does it feel to be married?
M: Good.
E: Definitely.
(They grab hands, smiling. A bit too long…)
C: Does anything feel different now, than it did before you officially tied the knot?
E: I suppose, technically, no. But the commitment. Even if it’s symbolic, it feels good. Don’t have to worry that she’s gonna end things again. (Laughs)
M: (sarcastic) Okay.
C: What was that?
M: Hm? Nothing, just, I agree. It’s good to be committed.
E: No… You, like, scoffed. (She gives Maeve a look. The look that says, don’t bother saying you didn’t! … and Maeve relents.)
M: I just think it’s funny, you talking about me like I’m gonna ditch out on you, when I wasn’t the one who broke off our engagement…
E: It wasn’t serious, it was just a joke… And that was a mistake, yes. But if you want to get technical, you are far more prone to ending things between us than I am.
M: ‘Far more’? Last I checked, we’re tied!
C: If I might jump in here…
M: Ah, see, now the referee comes in to take your side… I see the point of therapy, now, someone else to say you’re right, when Isa is busy, huh?
C: I’m not here to take sides. In fact, what I was going to suggest is… I think it may help if I meet with Maeve one-on-one.
M: uh, what?
C: It’s true that we’re in a bit of a lopsided scenario, here. Elena and I have been meeting for many years, and we have a mutual trust, while you hardly know me at all, nor I you. I think it would help the couples sessions greatly if we were able to gain some understanding together first.
(Maeve looks to Elena, hoping she’ll veto it…)
E: I think that’s a really good idea.
(Maeve realizes the mess she’s gotten herself into.)

1 – White dust sheets cover the furniture like ghosts of a life left behind. The path forward is hidden underneath layers of insecurity and grief but as he packs up years of work in pre-used cardboard boxes it almost feels as though he cannot see the path at all.
His new office is just down the hall. It is a fast job. Two trips and his desk has become another ghost. One more trip and he has emptied out all personal belongings from the dusty shelves. The rest stays, not useful to him anymore in his new function.
It is an involuntary trust exercise. To give up what he built for half a decade, the legacy he took over, being forced to let it rest in the hands of someone else. Unlike his brothers he had no way to prepare who follows his footsteps and perhaps that is where the ache in his belly comes from – the uncertainty.
He cannot quite bring himself to unpack the boxes in his new office yet. But it is not his office anyway, Copia thinks. No, it is his mother’s office and he feels like an intruder placing his things on her desk. Her smell clings to the old fabrics, clings to him, a strong perfume that Copia has not been able to get out of his nose ever since he covered her body with yet another white sheet.
Yet another ghost.
It has not been long, he tells himself, a weak comfort. As he stands here with an old card she wrote him – Welcome Home, C! – he can hear the clicking of his mother’s shoes on the tiled floors like a faint echo that haunts the hallways of the Ministry. Everyone is busy preparing for this transitional period, mourning their Mother Superior, but now it is Copia who has to guide them, navigate them through this darkness.
He realises that he himself has footsteps to follow and that he is just as unprepared. A new era, for all of them.
“Love?”
He turns and his world lights up for a brief moment. You occupy the doorframe in a black mourning habit, the one all Siblings chose to wear in honour of his mother. Of course he finds that it suits you better than anyone else. But perhaps that is because he has felt the sturdy fabric against his wet cheeks so many times now that it means comfort, home.
“Do you still need help with the boxes?” you ask.
All he can do is shake his head. You approach and he wants to close the card, hide it away, not even sure why. You have seen the fallout, you have held him through the worst of it. Perhaps he is ashamed, in a way, that he cannot move on as fast as his new role demands of him.
“Was this from her?” you ask, nestling up to his side.
“Mhm.”
His hand is trembling lightly as you lay yours to rest on top of his. The swipe of your thumb against his bare wrist sends goosebumps down his spine and when you wrap the other arm around his waist his eyes are watering.
“Perhaps you can frame it, together with some photos,” you suggest.
He nods, leaning into your embrace as a solid rock forms in his throat. You hold him and he lets the silent tears run down his cheeks, gathering at the dip of his chin. Your thumb continues to draw slow crescents over his pulse. He can’t speak. He does not have to.

2 – He is glued to the mirror.
You try not to fuss, he is nervous as is. It is first official day, after all.
“I didn’t know you had a new uniform,” you say with a lint roller in hand, joining him in the bedroom. The jacket is brand new, all black but unusual in its ornamentation, satin lapels that run from his neck towards his armpits. A clerical collar underneath sparkles against his Adam’s apple.
“I eh… splurged,” he says, cheeks dusted a bashful red.
He says it like he is wasteful, does it whenever he treats himself to something, but you also know he is wearing the same black winklepickers he wore as a Cardinal ten years ago, never replaces any pieces of clothing until he finds holes in the fabric, that he only bought new jackets when he could use them on stage to look his best for the audience. The suit is no different, it is as much a boost to his confidence as it is a display of his new status. A performance.
“It is a rather nice suit,” you note, running the lint roller down his back.
“Mhm.” He pauses, looks down at himself and tugs at the sleeves. “It is… unfamiliar.”
“You wear it well, Copia.”
He smiles and his confidence resurfaces. You find that he looks handsome in a completely new way. You have seen so many facets of him that you can tell he is beginning to mold himself into this role, even if he might not see it himself yet. In the mirror, a stranger is looking back at him through black-rimmed eyes but in time he will see himself again, a grown version.
“It is not all,” he says. “I… found something. In the desk drawer.”
He points to a velvety black box on the dresser. Inside, you find a beautiful ornament, two ruby brooches holding a bejewelled black grucifix, another ruby at the bottom. It is one of the most beautiful, elaborate pieces you have ever seen.
“A gift, I think.”
He looks uncertain when you glance up. But you have no doubt that it was meant for him, meant for today. You carefully take it out of the box, delicate as it looks it feels sturdy and well-crafted. One brooch to each lapel and the grucifix dangles over his heart. Light from the window catches in the gemstones, a prism splitting the ray into sparkles that reflect in the mirror, a spectacle of multicoloured beams flickering across the walls.
Copia watches the dancing lights, mesmerised, until the sun hides behind a cloud and the room is gloomy yet again. When you focus back on him a tear pearls from his left eye, running down his cheek and leaving a black streak in its wake. The piece is more than jewels – it is a memory, a promise, a token of trust.
“It is beautiful,” you say. “As are you, Copia. So beautiful.”
His smile is tinged with sadness but there is hope, now, too. You smooth out his jacket, admiring him for a moment, unconcealed, and he must see it in your eyes because the smile shifts until one corner of his mouth pulls into a lighthearted smirk.
“Do I get a kiss?” he asks.
You grab the satin and pull him close. One day you are going to peel him out of this jacket and it won’t feel heavy anymore.

3 – You gently wipe at his under-eye. The black smudge is persistent and you stop when the skin turns red. Copia’s eyes are closed even as he holds you. Wrapped around you he feels hot to the touch, almost feverish. He has gone non-verbal since he came home and you give him the space he needs, soft touches, rest and quiet.
The tension of the day still sits in his muscles, you can feel the knots when you run your hands over his back. The hot shower did not help, nor did the pasta he barely touched for dinner. He did well, everyone said this to you today. Whether he feels it you are not so certain.
You lean in and press a kiss to the round tip of his freckled nose. He blinks at you through tired, reddened eyes, lips curving into a lazy half-smile. His hand tightens at your waist, slides underneath your shirt to feel your skin. He’s your whole world molded into the shape of a man. Love, stored in the crinkles of his crow’s feet, every line on his face, in the brushstrokes of grey at his temples, an endless supply.
“I’m so proud of you,” you whisper, trailing the curve of his spine.
His eyes open and you feel guilty for disrupting his peace. But then he pulls you ever closer, squishing, the softness of your bodies mingling with a comforting warmth.
“I don’t…” He stops, brows pulled together. “I don’t know if I can do it.”
“I have no doubt that you can.” You study his features, move your hand to trace the lines of tension and smooth them out. He lets you, eyelids fluttering at the soft touch. “Every day from now on will be easier, Copia. My baby, I have such confidence in you. Unshakable.”
The words stir something in him. Some wetness gathers in his odd eyes but he blinks it away. You have to fight your own tears, good tears, for how far he has come. Then Copia nods, nods again but with more conviction. A deep exhale through his nose and he swallows the doubts away.
“You are right, always,” he says. “I was Papa Emeritus IV, eh? I did that.”
“You did.” A smile, proud and amused. “And now you are Frater Imperator.”
“Mhm, I am.”
“You are the head of this church, they are still your flock, adoring you, admiring you, trusting you. None of this has changed.” You cradle his face in both hands, a firm press of your thumbs to his cheekbones. “And you are still the man I love.”
“I am?”
“Forever.”
He closes the gap himself, a grateful kiss, seeking. You try to give him what he needs, firm and soft kisses, hands roaming, legs entangles. His tongue swipes over your bottom lip, deeper still until all air escapes you and a dizzy fog fills your head. He is all you know, all you want for the rest of this life you live together.
The kisses slow down, not any less deep, and he cradles your head, keeping you pressed together. There is some need building, a languid wave that fades out in ripples. You feel him stir against your leg but he is not quite here with you, not entirely, and it subsides after a moment.
He breaks away with a heavy sigh, keeps his eyes closed.
“Perhaps not tonight,” you say, stroking his hair.
He nods and rests his forehead against yours. His breath tickles your nose, the embrace tighter than before. It feels easier now, somehow, and you can picture it so clearly. The future, him, and even in your head the world is quiet as you hold him close.

Been wanting to do this one for a bit. This is one of my favorite things to write & TBH I’m surprised I went this long without doing it…let’s get it 😏
What Type of Kisser is Each LoTR Character?
Aragorn
So passionate in his every motion, lips sliding tenderly against yours like they belong there. Tends to cup your cheek or trace the curves of your cheekbone as he pulls you in. While he is the one guiding the kiss, he adapts easily to your pace, happy to take his time and savor you or devour you at your unspoken choosing. Also uses more tongue than he looks like he would…
Legolas
You barely remember how it happens sometimes, a sudden embrace turning into a kiss as Legolas’s arms hold you fast, sliding up and down your sides as his dark eyes glance hesitantly into yours for just a moment. A moment quickly passed as one of his hands breaks free only to brush your face as his lips meet yours sweetly. His hands remain upon your waist as he presses a long, warm kiss to your lips. Surprise him with a little bite, he loves it far more than he would ever admit!
Boromir
His hands always end up in your hair, tangling in it if it’s long or simply running his hands gently over it. Somehow knows exactly what you like, your favored pace, just where to run his hands next. A bit of a tease, pulling away just to see if you chase him or frown, only to return and give you what you wanted and more. Sometimes his grip slides lower to your waist or your back as his nails run down, almost always he ends up giving you at least one little nip between kisses…
Gimli
Pulls you in with both hands guiding your cheek or beneath your chin, crashing his lips to yours with reckless abandon. You can feel the pleasant surprise bloom across his pursing lips when you meet him with the same fire, his tongue darting out to the edge of your mouth looking for invitation. Kissing him is like exercise, bold, breathless, and invigorating all at once- with Gimli, both of you will be left feeling indomitable.
Frodo
Kisses with Frodo usually start with his lips upon your head or cheek before he pulls away, blue eyes gazing into yours. His lashes flutter tentatively before he leans in and his lips caress yours. Not one for messy kisses, but his soft motions pour every word of love he is too shy to speak straight to your rapidly beating heart. Frodo adores resting his forehead against yours after you separate, holding you against him as he wishes for the bliss to last forever.
Sam
The sweetest actually. Never not smiling at you lovestruck before and after any kisses you share. Sam peers at you like you raise the morning sun before tugging you closer by your joined hands, lips meeting yours with soft, loving awe. Slow, sensual kisses are his favorite as he takes time to savor every part, every motion, of your beautiful lips. If he feels you smile into the kiss, though, he’s lost, probably picking up the pace much faster than he realizes!
Merry
So playful and joyful whenever he gets the privilege of claiming your lips. You’ll be able to feel Merry smiling into the kiss as he presses just a bit deeper with each go. He likes to hold the small of your back as you meet. Casually slides his tongue in there as if he’s teasing you, and how can you deny him? Be warned: the more you try to keep up, though, the more he goes at it! Kissing Merry is like a game, one that leaves you without breath.
Pippin
It’s never just one kiss; Pippin is too addicted to your lips. Even if you just lean in for a peck, Pippin is pulling you in to deepen the kiss and taste your lips again and again. Whether he realizes how madly eager you get because of his little habit you don’t know, but you see no need to correct him. Prefers the simple feeling of connection to exploring your mouth, but every kiss you share is full of plenty of love and passion.
Faramir
Takes both of your hands in his as his means of pulling you close before his lips ghost tentatively over yours. They quickly pick up confidence as he feels you against him, the way you squeeze his hands gently. No little pecks here, Faramir’s kisses are long, long enough for him to tell you again and again what you mean to him and how he relishes in the soft glow of your warmth. He is happy to lead or let you lead so long as you indulge his love for you.
Eomer
Rough would probably be the best way to describe Eomer’s kisses. His lips crashing into yours, the scattered nips you feel, moving fast as you’ll let them, but still loving, almost reverent, somehow. You can feel him taking control, but can you truly complain beneath such a head-spinning kiss or the way his hands softly roam? For all that and all the lines about tongues battling, his kisses never feel like war, but like the cry beforehand, a declaration of will to fight for all one loves.
Haldir
Tends to start with a gentlemanly kiss to your hand before slowly meeting your eyes, seeing the shine therein and falling into your gravity. Hesitant as the first press of his lips upon yours is, the rush sets in and Haldir is soon holding you flush against him, enjoying the feeling of your hands upon his chest as he claims your lips. Private kisses are his favorite, taking in your ravishing beauty away form prying eyes or any distractions from relishing the feeling of you, exploring every inch of your mouth if the mood so takes him.
Eowyn
Her kisses are so sweet and joy-filled, you just know she’s experiencing sweet relief every time. Might even giggle a bit in between as she loves to peck your lips again and again before you finally grab her face and hold her there, kissing her hard enough to make her swoon. She loves to take your hand or wrap it around your back, some way to feel in complete connection as your lips move in their passionate harmony.
Arwen
Enjoys sneaking up on you from behind, lips pressing first to your neck or cheek until you turn around, instantly connecting with her. She loves to throw her arms around you in full surrender, time seemingly stopped as you enjoy the glide of her lips over yours and little more. Long kisses are her favorite, the ones where you forget about the world and live in the feeling of your synchronized pauses of breath, the way her arms trace up and down yours, perhaps a playful flick of her tongue…
Elrond
So incredibly gentle, pressing his lips to yours as if they could break. His grip on your back is just as gentle, the faintest of contact tethering your unity. The look he gives you afterward is enough to melt you, shocking him with the way you yank him back in, but his quick response shows no complaint. The second kiss is always more passionate, the one where you can feel the corners of Elrond’s mouth arch in amusement and his hand wrap around your shoulder.
Lindir
Shy at first, always seemingly wondering where to put his hands as they hover. The moment you deepen the kiss, though, they’re glued to your waist like they’re meant to be there. His motions are soft, delicate, intentional as if you were his latest artwork. Goes absolutely weak in the knees if you wrap your legs around him, his hands moving like they have minds of their own to hold you up even though his has completely blanked, knowing only this feeling of you fully his. Happier than anything to let you lead, moving in total surrender to your wonderful will.

Hey there, Tumblr fam! I wanted to share something that's been on my mind lately: mindfulness meditation.
