“i can’t believe you’re doing this.” said your best friend, jisung, while your purple haired best friend prepared his needle to pierce your lip. “it doesn’t make any sense.” he sighed, he couldn’t actually believe you were doing that.

“you really need to take it with a grain of salt.” chenle remarked with a sly smirk painting his face. it’s his first time piercing a friend, so he’s all for it. plus, you’d been planning this before the whole punk crush situation. 

the thing was, you’d been trying to catch someone’s eye. but not just anyone… your crush was the jeno lee, everyone’s dream punk boyfriend. he’s got the most absolutely intimidating and beautiful exterior, but nevertheless a soft and lovable interior. 

professors didn’t understand how he’d succeed every year after ghosting most classes for band practice with his closest mate, haechan. even if he’d been in class, his head would take him somewhere else to ignore all the noise from his back of the room company. 

when he’d walk around campus, always wearing a punk rock band tee, ripped jeans and his old black high converse, chains on his neck; piercings on his ear and left brow, carrying his bass on his back as a cherry on top, people would just absentmindedly make way for him for they’d been so used to his strong presence. 

regardless of it all, one friendly small nod at him would be enough to melt his tough image into a softie with the loveliest and deadliest eye smile in that college. 

“have you finished it yet?” your friend asked, referring to the cold water cup he’d given you to help you in the process. “i’ve got another customer coming soon, so we better hurry.”

“i still think this is not a good idea.” jisung stated with almost pleading eyes. not that he wasn’t into piercings, he thought they were cool and all. he just wasn’t interested in seeing you blue because of jeno again.

“it’s gonna be fine.” you replied, checking the marker’s placement and nodding to chenle. “and this is not to get his attention, i just really like lip piercings now.” you shrugged. 

“if you say so…” the tallest answered. 

you got his big hand into yours for support and he feared you’d crush him. the needle didn’t look so bad, but you couldn’t say it wouldn’t hurt. in a few minutes everything was ready and chenle held a mirror in front of you. 

“see?” you smiled at jisung from bellow him. “just a grain of salt, baby.”

that made both of them laugh as you admired your new piece of jewelry. 

all you needed now was hope for jeno to actually notice it tonight. you kinda lied when you said it wasn’t for his attention, you really wanted him to think you were cool.

as you walked into haechan’s small backyard studio with jisung, the band’s drummer, the tanned skinned boy side hugged you. “i love it when you come to rehearsal, i feel like we can actually make it, groupie.” he mocked, earning a harsh nudge right at his ribs. 

jaemin and jeno got in just minutes after you, with their instruments in their backs. jaemin particularly eager to show his new guitar. he started unpacking everything while jeno only needed to plug the bass, having left everything prepared earlier. 

“it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.” jaemin’s big smile couldn’t hide his sparkly eyes while he expected his friends' reactions.

“it’s amazing and showstopping but let’s hear it, yeah?” haechan said. “not all pretty things make good sounds.”

“that’s what she said, i guess?” jisung remarked before checking his drums, making jeno tick his lips at his bad joke.

“wait!” jaemin looked curiously at you, still smiling. “you’ve got a new piercing?” in seconds, he was just centimeters away from you, staring at your lip. “oohh, you’re so punk.” he emphasized it in a mocking tone. 

“our fans are so punk rock, dude.” haechan laughed getting his guitar on his shoulders. 

“i think it’s cool, actually.” you heard jeno say. following his voice, you looked at him from behind jaemin and found his cute, signature eyesmile. 

“i mean, you always looked cool. but now you’re…” he gulped. “y-you’re cooler, that’s what i mean.” he completed. 

“thanks, jeno.” you reply shyly, blushing and jisung almost throws his drumstick at you.

“dude forgot how to speak, apparently.” haechan chuckled, looking at jaemin, who followed “awkward. let’s give him some flirting lessons.” 

you could feel your blood rushing to your cheeks and jisung counted down to change the subject and start practicing, being cursed at in between “waits” and “what’s wrong with yous?”.

I went to Bishop about a month ago and had a great time! My last trip to Bishop left me feeling burnt out and not so excited to return, but I’m glad I said yes to this opportunity to go again. I tried a lot of new climbs which got me stoked and even wandered around for a bit by myself. I met so many amazing and strong people during that time and it made me realize how inviting and kind the climbing community can be.

This is one climb I revisited called Cueball. I tried it on my very first trip to Bishop in 2022 and made it a goal to get back on this recent trip. I remember being happy with how hard I tried before, so I made sure to try just as hard this time around. The climb was not a “give me” so I still had to dig deep for the last big move to the lip from a left hand pocket and right hand insecure pinch. This beta suit my style better than the previous one I tried, and I’m glad to say it went 🥰
