It’s been canonly shown that Holt has depression and that his parents disreguard him. Honestly, given that Holt was somewhat of a surprise once the two turned four, and Jackson having a Hyde form wasn’t exactly what Sydney wished for her son, to the point where she kept him a secret, it’s fair to say he has some trust issues. In his diary he can’t even identify a monster or two he would call his best friend, not even Heath, Deuce, Frankie, Operetta, or anyone else he canonly has a relationship with.  On top of that, Holt’s acting out and issues with anger is very common with AMAB adolescents with depression. He has always engaged in risky behaviors since he was very young, and it can be assumed he never recieved any sort of treatment or achknowledgement and it was blame on him being Jackson’s Hyde. Even after his failed date with Operetta, he walked away with a “That’s just how it is attitude” and moved on, and the same thing happened when Sydney learned about the failed date and scolded him. Holt has never been taught that he can change and be better, and his idea of improving is to become a completely different person which he views as impossible.  Specifically, he states that he can’t just become some nerdy boy. This is well before he learns of Jackson, thought may be linked to the switching. Later on he meets Jackson who is the picture of what Holt thinks Sydney wants him to be (perhaps: minus the normie part). I can’t imagine what damage it would do to his self esteem to feel like he was a failure his entire life and that was unchangable, only to find out his other half was, by his own definition, “the better half” that his mother wanted.  Holt does arguably have some outbursts in the show, but they are all mild and more linked to the actual confusion that comes with learning he has a Jekyll form. We don’t get to see his actual emotions behind this entire situation, and Sanders admitted to wanting to dive into this more. But, given his past, and what we know already about Edward, we would assume Holt would act out again. Instead he does seemingly the opposite and even stands up to Manny to protect Jackson (And, in part, himself).  Holt was set up to be an extremely complex character. There is a lot of trauma here, most of it stemming from childhood. Jackson makes a comment in his diary that he was glad he was old enough that this news wouldn’t have a negative impact on him psychologically, while Holt never makes a comment. Jackson was always able to live out his life (somewhat) normally, while Holt is just now catching up on creating relationships, addressing trauma, and finding his own identity. On top of that, he is dealing with this new information alone. No one should blame Frankie for wanting to step out of that situation, that is way too much for a 16 year day old monster to handle. However, as discussed before, Holt was never taught how to problem solve. He most likely got placed into the same loop Sydney has placed him in so many times before.

It’s ironic when he mentions “16... I think” in his profiles. Mentally and physically, he is a 16 year old boy, however he is years behind on emotional and social development.
