@steddielovemonth Day 12: Love is... The tea he brings me without prompt when I’m sick (Prompt by anon)
wc: 740 | Rated: G | cw: None
Tags: Sick Fic, Eddie is Being a Total Shit, Wayne Munson, Care Giving Steve Harrington
A Case of the Sniffles
Steve knows that Eddie is sick when he knocks on the Munson’s door, its accompanying flyscreen rattling under his knuckles.
“I’ve grown weak during the night,” Eddie had informed during a too-early-for-the-both-of-them phone call, “Come quickly, my dearest King. For I fear I shan’t make it to sundown.”
But, considering the expression Wayne greets him with, Steve begins to think that Eddie’s dramatics weren’t just a ploy to get him over here.
“You visitin’ Ed?” Wayne asks, throwing his work jacket over his shoulder in haste as he steps over the threshold.
“He called me,” Steve supplies, earning the rarest of laughs from the permanently grumpy elder Munson.
But Wayne quickly stops, clearing his throat and feigning seriousness. And by the look of the hurried glance he gives his truck, Steve suspects the man is happy to be relieved of caring for what sounds like the world’s biggest crybaby.
“Good luck, kid,” Wayne says, patting Steve on the back before quickly ducking his head back in the door, “Eddie! Steve’s here for ya! There’s chicken soup leftover in the fridge!”
There’s an unintelligible whining sound from inside that leaves Wayne wincing as he ventures down the front concrete slab steps.
Steve swears the man dashes to his truck before he can even get out a goodbye.
He heads inside, sighing as he opens the front door.
It creeks away as he steps over the threshold, the sound alerting Eddie to his presence. His boyfriend's dishevelled form lifts slightly from his sick bed on the couch where he is surrounded by tissues and crochet blankets. The coffee table is even more crowded than usual, littered with discarded cups and mugs. Typically Wayne would flip out about this mess but he’s already left the place for dust.
“Steve,” Eddie rasps, raising a limp hand before letting it fall, “Come closer. I fear the light is fading.”
But Steve just snorts a laugh and heads for the kitchen.
“Eds, you have a bad case of the sniffles.”
“I am ill!” Eddie argues, calling after him with complete clarity.
He looks back to find his couch-ridden boyfriend flapping back his blanket, sending a cascade of used tissues flying onto the floor. Eddie pouts, frowning back at him like a disgruntled kitten.
“Just…” Steve begins, reaching for a clean coffee mug on the dish rack, “Give me a minute to fix you something.”
“What is it?”
Again, Eddie’s voice doesn’t have an ounce of sickness behind it.
Steve rolls his eyes, “Just trust me, okay?”
There’s a fussy grunt but Eddie flops back down on the couch without any more protesting, which thankfully gives Steve enough time to locate the teabags, boil the electric kettle and add a dollop of honey to the mug. He makes quick work of fixing a cup of tea, setting it down after making room on the coffee table.
“Drink,” he commands, nodding to the cup.
Eddie grumbles, side-eyeing the mug.
“What is it?” he asks tentatively, folding his arms underneath his readjusted blankets.
“Tea with honey,” Steve explains, lowering onto the edge of the couch.
Eddie falls silent for a long moment, very obviously stifling a smile despite otherwise not looking like he is about to budge an inch to sit up.
“Can you hold the mug for me?” he asks, with a smile that appears just as mischievous as his bright and sunny regular self.
“Fine,” Steve relents.
And honestly? Up close, Eddie does look sick. Though still not enough to warrant the theatrics.
His skin is paler than usual, his nose reddened like he has been out in the snow too long. His hair is a little greasy too as his bangs stick out every which way, making him look like what Steve assumes the townsfolk of Hawkins were thinking of months back when everyone was convinced Eddie was a wild criminal.
They just never got a look at Eddie's impossibly cute dimples...
Steve picks up the mug and gestures for Eddie to sit – surely he can manage it. And his partner does so, even though he grumbles and gripes all the way.
Eddie gulps back god knows what, all gross and throaty before puckering his lips.
“Kisses?” he requests, sniffling.
“Alright,” Steve shrugs.
He leans forward to press a quick kiss to his boyfriend's lips, earning a contented hum as he pulls back.
“Thanks for the tea,” Eddie smiles, taking the mug in his cold hands.

so. a thought captured me the other day. about what kinds of cars the undersiders would drive if they could/did.
taylor - 1990 volvo 740. look at it. it just fits. practical and plain but kinda classy.
brian - i know everyone's thinking minivan or station wagon or sedan but honestly a 2005 ford mustang fits way too well. it's a muscle car that is generally widely regarded by car people as being thoroughly mediocre. brian, of course, would not know this. he would see a relatively inexpensive muscle car, think 'that looks cool' and buy it, not realizing that he is going through a midlife crisis at 17. aisha makes fun of him for it.
lisa - porsche 911 (paint: black with purple pinstriping). do i even need to explain.
rachel: older pickup truck, not sure what model (she doesn't care) with off-road tires and upgraded suspension. rusty, smells like dog food, and is probably pretty messy.
aisha: wins award for most terrifying car on the list. heavily modified dodge viper. swapped cams, bored cylinders, forged parts, turbochargers, upgraded exhaust, the works. also has a very cool paint job (something like jet black with neon pink and green accents). the kind of car the main antagonist in a movie about street racing would have.
alec:
#worm#parahumans#undersiders#taylor hebert#brian laborn#lisa wilbourn#rachel lindt#aisha laborn#alec vasil#letting my carbrain peek through a bit#i was honestly thinking 'eh alec doesn't drive at all he just begs the others for rides' (true) but then the moped idea came to me#and i could not pass up the opportunity to both make fun of alec and actually give him something that he would drive

"A new community housing development in the Bronx will feature a cool piece of kit: an on-site aerobic digester that can turn 1,100 pounds of food scraps into 220 pounds of high-quality fertilizer every single day.
Built by Harp Renewables, it’s basically a big stomach filled with bacteria that breaks down food scraps and wasted food into their component parts, and in the future could be a standard part of all apartment units as the amount of food waste in American reaches 30% of the total mass of all trash collection.
The Peninsula, organized by Gilbane Development Company, will feature 740 units of affordable housing, 50,000 square-foot light industrial space and equal sized green space, and 15,000 feet of commercial space, all of which will send their castaway comestibles right into the digester...
Fast Company reports that Christina Grace, founder of a zero-waste food management company, helped plan the design and implementation of the digester into The Peninsula, and helped organize a 40% grant from the city to pay the $50,000 upfront cost.
“The goal is for this material to work its way into the community garden network in the Bronx,” [Christina Grace, who helped plan the design] told the magazine, adding that she expects it to pay for itself over just a few years. “We see this as highly replicable in both commercial and residential venues. We know there’s a need for fertilizer.”
Producing fertilizer right there in the city reduces the need for it to be trucked in from afar, chipping away, even if just a bit, at NYC traffic.
Big problem solver
Perhaps uniquely beneficial to New York City compared to other spots in the U.S. is that the digester will have a significant impact on the Bronx’s share of the city’s rodent problem.
Those who’ve watched the Morgan Spurlock documentary Rats will understand why that’s significant—while those that haven’t will have to imagine what living in a megacity where rats outnumber people by around 8 or 10 to 1 looks like.
Another big problem the bio-digesters could potentially help is pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Fertilizer is a big emitter of all three of the most-targeted GHGs. Fertilizer, like quarry dust and ammonia is, like so many commodities, often imported from countries who specialize in its production, such as Norway, but also Russia and Ukraine, whose conflict has recently highlighted the fragility of the supply chain with sharp increases in prices...
Bio-digesters by design keep the CO2 and methane in the fertilizer produced, rather than it entering the atmosphere.
For these reasons and more, the aerobic bio-digester is slowly making its way into residential and industrial spaces around the country.
GNN reported on an enormous bio-digester at the heart of the D.C. advanced resource (sewage) recovery center outside the capital, and on the use of bio-digesters on Australian pig farms which are helping reduce the environmental and psychological impact of the effluent produced from such operations.
Harp Renewables tweeted how happy they were to have installed their bio-digester in the town of Cashel, Ireland.
Expect to see more stories like this pop up around the globe."
-via Good News Network, March 17, 2022
Note: Obviously gentrification bad and "affordable housing" is sometimes nowhere near as affordable as it should be, etc. etc. That said, this is such a fantastic use case that I felt I had to post it anyway.

MCYT on Ao3, October '24
It's time for fandom stats! What has everyone been up to in the last month?
Some Notes:
A full 3 new fandoms this month, which is Parkour Civilization, Scenario SMP, and Skyblock Kingdoms SMP. That brings it up to 68 fandoms I'd consider MCYT, and also Video Blogging!
Fics are still primarily in english, but we have three exceptions with significant spanish fics. Karmaland (815 of 947 are in spanish, which is up from 801 last month), Tortillaland (123 of 129 are in spanish, from 117 last month), and QSMP (1,167 of 10,889 are in spanish, from 1,139 last month)
QSMP also shows 55 works in French, the same as last month, and 740 works in Brazilian Portuguese, up from 680 las month.
In the small and micro fandoms, everything was blown out of the water by the explosion of Parkour Civilization. Skybound SMP showed an increase of 27 fics, which would be impressive in any other month, but Parkour Civilization showed an increase of 135 fics, which means 95.74% of the current tag got posted in the last month, or an increase of 2250% of last month, so y'know. That fandom went crazy.
In the midsize fandoms, Mystreet is back to being the standout, with an increase of 51 fics. At 975 fics currently I expect to see it having broken over the 1000-fic mark by next month! Yandere High School and Evolution SMP both showed significant gains, at 31 fics and 23 fics respectively.
In the larger fandoms, Hermitcraft is back to being the one with the greatest increase! They showed an increase of 771, which handily beats last month's 593 and the month before's 665. 3rd Life stayed remarkably steady, with 454 new fics to last month's 456 (notably less than the previous month's 493, but with the rumours of a new season on the horizon, that could change pretty fast). QSMP was back to decreasing, showing 239 fics against last month's 328 after the previous month's 318— that fandom hasn't quite found its footing in the post-canon world. Lifesteal was pretty increased, showing 208 fics this month against last month's 141 and the previous month's 155. Empires continued to keep trucking, showing 177 fics against last month's 192 and the previous month's 160. And finally, DSMP showed a still-respectable increase of 600 against last month's 671, still in the window of the previous month's 612.
The overall Video Blogging RPF increase of 3,010 was comparable to last month's 2,851, though still down from 4,702 at this time last year.

Snow in The Summer ୨୧ 𝓨ang 𝓙ungwon
one. turning point | wc: 740 warnings: none written in third person. not proofread.
Y/N woke up with a splitting headache, a bitter taste lingering in her mouth. She squinted against the sunlight streaming through the window, groaning as she slowly sat up. The familiar surroundings of Jayun's room brought a fleeting sense of comfort, but it was quickly replaced by the weight of regret and shame. She glanced over and saw Jayun asleep in a chair next to the bed, her face etched with worry even in sleep.
Memories from the night before came flooding back, and Y/N cringed at the thought of how much she had embarrassed herself. She let out a heavy sigh, knowing she couldn’t keep living like this. She needed to change, but the pain of her mother’s absence was a wound that never seemed to heal.
Jayun stirred and opened her eyes, immediately alert. "Morning," she said softly, her voice laced with concern. "How are you feeling?"
"Like I got hit by a truck," Y/N muttered, rubbing her temples.
Jayun stood and stretched, then sat on the edge of the bed. "We need to talk," she said gently but firmly. "This can't keep happening. You can't keep drowning your sorrows in alcohol. It's tearing you apart and me apart too, watching you go through this."
Y/N bit her lip, tears welling up in her eyes. "I know, Jayun. I know I need to stop, but I don't know how. Every time I try, I just... I feel so empty."
Jayun reached out and took Y/N's hand, squeezing it reassuringly. "We’re going to help you find a way to cope. Jake and I have been talking, and we think it might be a good idea for you to visit your family in Korea for the summer. Maybe learning more about your mom and her origins will help you find some peace."
Y/N’s eyes widened in surprise. "Korea? But… how? What about my dad? He’d never let me go."
"Jake bought you a ticket," Jayun said, her eyes searching Y/N's face for a reaction. "He’s willing to talk to your dad and help convince him. We both think it could be good for you, a chance to start healing."
Y/N felt a surge of emotion—fear, hope, uncertainty—all mingling together. "I don’t know, Jayun. What if it doesn't help? What if I go all the way there and still feel the same?"
Jayun gave her a reassuring smile. "It’s worth a try, isn't it? You can't keep living like this. And you won’t be alone. Your family there will support you, and Jake and I will always be here for you, no matter what."
Y/N nodded slowly, tears streaming down her face. "Okay. I’ll do it. I'll go."
Jayun hugged her tightly, relief washing over her. "We'll figure this out together, Y/N. One step at a time."
Later that day, Y/N sat with Jake and Jayun at the kitchen table, her father’s stern face across from them. The tension in the air was palpable as Jake explained their plan. Her father listened quietly, his face a mask of concern and hesitation. Finally, he let out a long sigh.
"Y/N," he said, his voice softer than she had heard in a long time. "I’ve been so worried about you. If you think this trip will help you find some peace, then I’ll support it. Just promise me you’ll take care of yourself and come back home to us."
Y/N nodded, fresh tears in her eyes. "I promise, Dad. Thank you."
As the days passed, Y/N prepared for her journey, a mix of anxiety and anticipation building within her. Jayun and Jake helped her pack, offering words of encouragement and support. When the day of her flight arrived, Y/N stood at the airport with her friends, feeling a sense of resolve she hadn’t felt in a long time.
Jayun hugged her tightly. "Take care of yourself, and call us if you need anything. We’ll be here for you, always."
Jake gave her a reassuring smile. "You’ve got this, Y/N. Go find your answers. And remember, you’re not alone. You have our numbers if anything. Seriously, I’ll drop everything if something goes wrong. Just say the word." Y/N smiled and wrapped her arounds around Jake. “Thank you.”
As Y/N boarded the plane, she looked back one last time at her friends, drawing strength from their unwavering support. She knew the journey ahead wouldn’t be easy, but for the first time in a long while, she felt a glimmer of hope. With a deep breath, she took her seat and closed her eyes, ready to face whatever lay ahead in her quest for healing and understanding.

Volvo or Saab?
Volvo makes fun cars and trucks but Saab makes the glorious multirole fighter aircraft JAS 39 Gripen, might of the Swedish Air Force, scourge of Russian airspace violators, champion of the Swedish meatball
But Volvo does make cars that look boxy, and my parents first car was a 1989 Volvo 740 that was boxy as all hell so I'm nostalgic

I can't believe this week is over already. It was so wildly busy and so incredibly full. I feel happy but also so tired. But also so so so excited that we get the day off tomorrow! They canceled camp kick off! Incredible. I am thrilled.
Especially with how busy I was today. I slept fine but not the best. I woke up when James was leaving and I just remember having the biggest smile seeing them. And then immediately fell back asleep until 740.
When I got up I felt a little crazy. I made the bed and got dressed and would decide to wash my hair tonight.
I gave Sweetp a kiss. Checked in the tanks. And was off.
I had a good drive to hunt valley. And it was another good conversation! This time about homes and living in Baltimore. How we came into money for the house. How lucky we have been and privileged to have the help. Plus James getting hit by a truck. We have been lucky in a lot of ways.
Once we got to camp I was overwhelmed. There was still so much to do. I went up to arts to go over all the other programs and made lists of what needed to be collected. I was getting more and more worried. After an hour I texted Heather to ask for help.
She would send me three girls and they were wonderful. I gave them the lists and sent them off to find things. Rocks and paint and identification cards. Pitri dishes and compasses and almost everything I needed. I was just so happy to have them doing that. Because then I could go to the office to work on printing all the examples and guides.
It was a lot of work though. I had to edit so many things so they didn't say "Indian". Just out of date terminology. But things were getting done.
I handed off the prints to get laminated. I appreciate the people who helped with that so much. They wouldn't get everything laminated but they did get everything in the sleeves and I would finish the laminating later on.
I went back to art and did some more organizing of supplies and materials. I can ot wait until our boxes are in so things can be actually organized. But it's something.
I would come back to the office and Callie said we could take the camp truck and go get the deck furniture her parents were giving to camp, and then go to a deli she likes. Excellent.
While we were waiting for the truck to be available I continued my printing tasks. But it didn't take long for us to be able to head off.
It was fun taking the truck. I used to drive a truck and it was fun. It took about a half hour to get out there and it was fun talking with Callie and being silly and the sky was beautiful. It was such a nice little drive.
When we got to her parents' I got to meet her mom a bit more formally. I've said hi before but this was a real introduction. I also got to meet their very sweet dog. Who is a very nervous baby but I liked her apple shaped head.
It would take us a bit to get all of the furniture into the back of the truck. First problem was that there was a second hitch in the middle of the bed that we didn't know about. But I'm very smart and I was able to figure out how to take it out and later on would be able to tell Laney over the phone how to put it back in and I was very proud of myself.
Then it was just a lot of figuring out how to Tetris all of the things into the back of the truck. There were eight chairs and two tables. And I think we did a great job. It was a lot of teamwork and effort. Callie was in the back of the truck while me and her mom were handing her things and trying to help figure out how things should go together. And it was just I think a really good time. We only had four bungee cords but we made it work and everything was pretty secure.
We would do a 2 minute drive down the road to the deli / grocery store. And that was like our test run to see if the things were all going to fall out and they seemed pretty good besides a little bit of rattling from one of the tables. So after I got out of the truck to help Callie park because the truck is very big. We went and got some food.
. It was nicer than growls and kind of reminded me of the grocery store I used to go to in Minneapolis that was really nice. And she would get I think she said chicken salad. And I got a grilled cheese. I also will pick up edamame for later and a cannoli flavored chocolate bar to share with James. We had to wait a pretty long time but honestly food was really good and I think it was worth it in the end.
We had about a half an hour drive back to camp. The new girl who's teaching EAC was at camp and she wanted to know if we can meet up and I told her I would be available in the office in one half hour. And then I just enjoyed my drive with Kelly. We shared Western fries and worried about the table sliding around and possibly breaking the back window. But we did a really good job and so it was not a problem in the end.
Right before we got back to camp I called Elizabeth to make sure that we were good to take the stuff directly to the pool. And we were so we pulled up and I walked to the office to grab the boys so they could help her bring them in and I could go eat my sandwich and wait for Corrina to come find me.
She would come about 10 minutes later which was totally fine. Gave me enough time to eat my sandwich. And then we sat down and went over and just kind of talked through things that might be a problem and figured out some solutions and some alternatives. And I think she's going to do a really good job. There are quite a few times that she's going to be gone this summer but she's not the first one that's done that so I'm not that worried about it. As long as we have someone to cover and whatever project she picks for that week not being too difficult for them to handle.
I would spend the rest of the afternoon finishing the lamination. Tony helped me punch holes in the corner so that we could binder ring them and then Alexis daughter Josephine helped me put the hand talk flashcards into alphabetical order. And that took a really long time. And I appreciate how hard she works because that was not a super fun task. But it got done and then we labeled them with numbers so that we cannot have them fall out of order again and it will not take as long to put back together. But that was like an hour long task.
A whole bunch of materials for the hands on History and some of the other program projects had come and some people had taken the boxes after arts and crafts so I was like sweet I'm going to go up there and unpack them. But some very thoughtful but misguided counselors had unpacked everything already. Each one of those boxes had been labeled for which program they were going to and now I didn't know what program they were for. So I was a little frazzled. So once I was able to get a couple people to come inside and help me we sorted everything out and then I had them carry it to the different locations. I would follow along to the Adirondacks so that I could put things in the correct piles for the boxes for when the boxes come. And it was a little stressful and it was a little sweaty but we handled it and it was all good.
I was ready to go though. I was hot and I was tired. And I went to the office to check in with Heather because she made a comment about next week with me being with the camp all in for the whole time. I thought I was only leading programs not acting as a counselor so I was very surprised. And she was like yeah you're probably right so I'm just going to be jumping in a few times to leave programs not be there from 9:00 to 2:00. So I'll actually have time to continue finishing setting up all the programs. And I hopefully will be able to pull away a couple other people to help me because I still feel slightly overwhelmed by all of it.
I headed out of there and I had a much shorter drive home than yesterday. I would arrive back here at 5:30 and I was thrilled to see James and our dear friend Brooks sitting at the kitchen island.
James and Brooks are going to a baseball game tonight and meeting up with some of our other friends. And it was just really nice to have people over. Brooke's let me braid his hair and he was very surprised that I was able to braid it with just one hair tie. He grew his hair out in the last year or so and he still learning how to do things with his hair so I think he was surprised I was able to make him a very pretty Elsa braid with only one hair tie and not a bunch of barrettes and clips and things. He's learning he's trying. I thought he looked really nice with the braid. And he would leave the house for the baseball game with James with the braids still in.
Once they left I would set myself up outside on the porch swing. Cost per use I'm going to make this swing so worth it in the end. I love the swing. It gives me the same nice feeling that my hammock does but it's more structured so I'm not as squeezed. And I laid out there with my book and my edamame and I had an excellent evening. I had brought crab cake out to soak in a bowl for a bit and then put him in his outdoor enclosure. And I have some plans for how I'm going to build out the bigger outdoor enclosure once we have a fence. And just kind of thought about that and enjoyed sweet peace company and I was out there for a really long time. Couple hours. Just hanging out and enjoying being in my backyard that I own. I was getting eaten alive by mosquitoes and that is something I'm going to have to figure out going forward. But I really love our little space and I'm just really happy that it's coming together so well.
As the sun started to set I brought crab cake inside and put him in his enclosure. I changed out the water in there and he started burying himself as he does. And I would sit outside and write the first half of this post until sweet pea walked himself in and then I came in to close the door. And now I'm running a bath and I'm going to soak and wash my hair and wait for my husband to come home.
It has been a really nice week but man was it a lot. I am so excited to not have to go anywhere tomorrow. My plan is to do nothing. I am going to hopefully have some projects left to do here and work on some art things. Pack my little bag for next week because I'm going to be sleeping over at camp all 5 days. And then on Sunday I'm going to go visit my parents and I'm really excited about that. And I just think that this is going to be a beautiful summer and I'm really excited. And I'm really excited to continue to share my stories with you. I hope you guys all have a great night and you sleep well. Until next time. Good night

The strikes have put most films and television shows on hold, though some productions have received waivers. Taylor Swift's Eras Tour was allowed to film during the strikes because the singer adhered to all the required terms. So far, the movie has grossed $26 million in advance ticket sales (Forbes), and this is great news for the union members on strike.
...
The success of Taylor Swift's Era's Tour proves big studios aren't as powerful and necessary as they think they are. It's important to note that Swift is a massive celebrity with a cult following who will show up to support any of her endeavors. However, there are plenty of present-day and past films – Marvel and Harry Potter, to name a few – with massive fanbases that would fill theaters whether these movies had major companies backing them or were independently produced. Needless to say, Swift's tour movie is further evidence that the creative teams behind films are the ones who draw fans in, not studio executives. Taylor Swift was given a waiver to film during the strikes because she was fairly compensating the team involved. According to Insider, Swift is currently worth over $740 million dollars, and as her tour continues, it's predicted she may soon be joining the billionaires club. However, she has never been stingy with her money, whether she's helping fans pay off college loans or making sure her workers are being paid livable wages. Recently, Swift paid over $55 million dollars to her tour workers, including $100,000 bonuses to her tour truck drivers (via People.) When it came to making Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, she continued her generosity, proving to studios that if they want the strikes to end, they need to step up and pay the WGA and SAG-AFTRA union members fair wages. Perhaps if Taylor Swift had been in charge, the strikes would have ended a long time ago.
everyone's talking about how successful pre-sales are for Swift's movie, but breaking records is just something she does lol. it's 2023, move on.
what's more interesting/important is what it means for the writers' strikes. studios are seething over Swift's decision to bypass them to produce this movie while paying workers fair wages

vacay asking anon here again lmao, i'm great actually thanks for asking!
thats a lot of noteworthy crazy, but i'm glad you still had a good vacation
one question however. . . someone stole money and made the business go BANKRUPT?!
hi again, that's good to hear!
yeah, i mean, it was just a food truck with ice cream, waffles, slushies and shit like that so, yk, small thing, but when our daily earnings barely went over 180 USD (converting from polish) money) on a good day, and the guy stole over 740 USD (could be more, police is still counting), it made a huge difference and it may have been the thing that caused the bankruptcy lmao

After a year’s delay I’m finally posting my retrospective on my first 20 years in Reno. Here’s hoping the next ten year retrospective doesn’t take another to write.
Special thank you to @creative-writing92 for proofreading this.
I hope you all enjoy
A look back at 20 years in Reno, Part 1– The first 10 2002-2012
September 3, 2022 was the 20th Anniversary of my move from Phoenix, Arizona to Reno, Nevada. I’ve wanted to write this retrospective for a while but for some reason, I put it off. I had the time, I just didn’t do it. I played games on my iPad or took naps. So here it goes. I’m not doing a year-by-year breakdown because some years would be boring. This is just a word dump with some trimming to keep it shortish.
September 3, 2002, it was the day after Labor Day. That weekend was hard at church. Word had spread among my group of friends that I was moving. I remember the specific reaction of one older friend and his wife. He interrupted his wife’s conversation with another person to not only tell her that I was leaving but to have the three of them pray for me after I explained why I was leaving. I spent the holiday morning at a church baptism basically saying goodbye to all the friends I made at the church I had attended for the entire time I lived in Phoenix from 1997-2002, Vineyard Christian Fellowship North Phoenix. Thankfully, I’m still in contact with many of them via Facebook. Many times I wish I had gone back for more visits, but that never happened and probably won’t because of health issues.
So you may be asking why did I move 740 miles if I was happy where I was? That can basically be summed up in two words; No Job! After being let go from one job for having flu-like symptoms for more than a week, Since I was having difficulty finding a job, one that would allow me to pay my bills, my mom eventually suggested that I move to Reno and live with her while I looked for a job and got settled. After some discussion with one of my pastors and prayer with friends, I took my mom up on her offer of a place to live. I spent the holiday weekend loading up my stuff into a U-Haul truck and early Tuesday morning I hopped into my tightly-packed truck and drove all day and night through the Arizona and Nevada deserts finally arriving in Reno early Wednesday morning. After sleeping a few hours at my new residence, my dad came and helped me unload the truck and put the majority of my stuff in my mom’s garage. We took the truck to the nearest U-Haul rental location. The next several weeks I was out looking for a job and found one that allowed me to use the electronics degree that I got in Phoenix.
**
Let me tell you a story about how lucky I was during my trip. When I say tightly-packed, I mean I could barely pull down the door, I needed my roommate to push on the pieces that were blocking the door so I could close the latch. I fortunately ran into a kind Arizona Highway Patrolman who let me go through a security checkpoint at the Hoover Dam. Since it was almost the one year Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, there was concern that other locations would be targets for attacks, Hoover Dam being one of them. Since we couldn’t open the back of the truck so he could inspect it. He decided my story was credible enough that I wasn’t going to blow up the dam and let me through to cross over the dam. If he didn’t let me over, I would have had to take a major detour and probably wouldn’t have had the gas money to make it to Reno that night, nor money for a hotel room.
**
Those first seven years were dominated primarily by two things; my Line Tech job at International Game Technology (IGT,) and volunteer work at the church I was going to, first known as Mtn Springs Church, later on it became Reno Vineyard. I have always been active in my churches, whether it was being a part of the sound crew from an early age at my home church in South Lake Tahoe, or being an adult leader in the Youth group in Phoenix to overseeing the Audio/Video Team in Reno, volunteering had been a big part of my church experience. It didn’t take me long to get plugged into the church once I found the right one. I quickly made close friends, both in my age group and some who are older, many of those people have remained in my life.
I started working for IGT at the end of September, 2002. During my tenure there i started on the Day Shift Crew until the need arose for someone to move to the Swing Shift Crew, until the Swing Shift schedule was closed and we all joined the DayShift Crew. I eventually got to a point where I was the tech that was called for the tougher jobs. At the end of my tenure I was part of a focus group to try to find causes of repetitive repair issues that usually resulted in damage to expensive parts. In this group I worked closely with management and engineers. I would put together spreadsheets based on repair calls and the specific tech’s repairs performed.
One significant event that happened in April of 2008 was the sudden death of my younger brother Philip. Phil had been living with our grandmother in Yuba City helping her out as well as going to college and trying to make the college baseball team. When that didn’t work out he began studying to to obtain a real estate license, which he obtained. Unfortunately this was in the middle of the recession and he wasn’t able to sign on with an agent at the time so he was helping my uncle flip a property nearby. Phil’s sudden passing had a profound impact on my life. Even now 15 years later and after a traumatic brain injury, I still remember that day very vividly. I was at work when I got the 9am call from my mom telling me that my brother had passed during the night. I’m not going to describe that morning because the details take up too much space. The support I got from coworkers as well as my Star Wars friends was an immense comfort to me.
One other major event that I got to be a part of was during Memorial Day weekend of 2007 to celebrate my 30th birthday I joined a few thousand fellow Star Wars fans in Los Angeles at Celebration IV (CIV) to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Original Star Wars movie. During this weekend I meet up with a bunch of fellow bloggers on the old Fan Club, Hyperspace blog site. Sadly the blogs are no longer in existence. But we still keep in touch via Social Media. After the first day a Bloggers’ Meet & Greet was organized since most of us had never met in person. This gave us the chance to put a face to the Username and avatar.
(Picture of the convention logo. This was taken from the large screen at the opening ceremonies.)
(Our group at lunch on the first day. I’m the tall curly-haired dude in the center of the picture. I ran into these guys by chance. I was getting dog-tired. We spent the rest of the weekend going from place to place. We waited in line together
After I left my job, I had planned on getting some rest for a few days and then do stuff around my mom’s house. I had been renting it from her since just after I had moved back to Reno, after she had moved to Gardnerville for her own job. But I ended up just staying in bed most of the time. I did plan a trip to the east coast to see some friends I had met a few years earlier at a Star Wars convention in Los Angeles, but prior to that East Coast trip, over Mother’s Day weekend, my mom, grandmother and I were going to go to Chicago to see family that lived there and we hadn’t seen in more than a decade. I had also planned on catching up with other Star Wars friends who lived in the Chicago area. The week prior to our trip to Chicago, I went down to visit my grandmother and my mom had suggested that instead of her going to get Grandma, I bring her to Mom’s house and they would come get me the next day at my house and we would go to the airport.
Looking back now, I shouldn’t have even gone to visit my grandma, let alone driven us back. For a good portion of the week that I was there, if I was in the living room, I was nodding off or falling asleep even while I was on the computer, writing an essay for an American history college course. I also took a drive out to a park and was nodding off on that drive too. I’m lucky I didn’t drive off a cliff while driving grandma and myself back to Gardnerville. Sing Grandma hadn’t seen my Uncle Bob in a while, we took a detour to visit him and his then wife Jenny in South Lake Tahoe. The routes I took to their house and to my mom’s house in Gardnerville from Tahoe weren’t exactly the safest ways to go for someone who kept nodding off. After eventually making it to Gardnerville, I could have stayed at mom’s house but I didn’t. I said I had to pack and also had to finish my history essay that was due that night at midnight. Mom and Grandma would come get me the next morning and go to the airport for our flight to Chicago. I left my grandma and made my way back. I stopped at both a grocery store to get a Starbucks coffee AND a 7-Eleven to get a Coke Slurpee to keep me awake for the 30 minute drive home.
This is one of the instances where God kept me from dying. In between Carson City and Reno there is a five mile straightaway that goes through Washoe Valley that I would take and was regularly able to get my car up between 85-90 miles per hour and if there wasn’t any traffic or cops visible I could hit 100 mph. Sometimes I would take one of the truck routes that would bypass that straightaway. This trip was one of those times. I exited the highway and it wasn’t more than a mile into that route when I either nodded off or actually fell asleep and drove up the hill on the right side of the road and rolled my car down the hill. I’m pretty sure I actually fell asleep because I distinctly remember waking up and seeing the inside of my car spinning and stuff flying around inside. By some miracle my car landed on all four tires. I wasn’t injured. The roof on my side wasn’t damaged, the roof on the passenger side, however was CRUSHED, the same side that grandma had been in less than an hour before!
Another thing that God provided was the driver in the car behind me that saw the accident was a nurse who had just gotten off work at Carson Tahoe Medical Center and was on her way home. She was able to give me a brief check to make sure I didn’t suffer a concussion, she also called 911 and was able to give a statement to the police and paramedics about my condition. I was able to walk away from the accident and sit on the side of the road to call my mom and leave her a message. Another cool thing that helped calm me down was one of the paramedics in the ambulance was the daughter of a couple I knew from church and while I was strapped to the gurney on a backboard for the trip back to Reno, standard procedure for people in rollover accidents, my mom called me back and the paramedic was able to tell her my condition and where they were taking me. When we got to the ER i saw another friend who was also a paramedic.
Once I was taken to the trauma area I had blood drawn and it was after they got the results that the doctor came in and said it looked like I had kidney failure and that a nephrologist would be coming to see me.
It was now in May 2009 that I was diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney failure or End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD.) For probably the six months prior, I was beginning to experience the symptoms of kidney failure, things like fatigue, nausea and vomiting, but I never went to the doctor even after my friends would tell me to go. I would just attribute the symptoms to my lifestyle, at the time, I was in my early 30s and would eat primarily fast food, and other junk food. I wasn’t sleeping well, I was still drinking, though not as heavily as I had been. I started kidney dialysis, which I have been doing for fourteen years. The kidney failure was an inevitable result of my longtime kidney problems that I had since I was a child. I don’t believe it could have been stopped by going to a doctor. It would have been discovered sooner it could have been delayed by better self care and proper medical treatment. After my diagnosis my family member started checking into the transplant possibilities. It was found out mid 2010 that my father was a match, not only in blood type but also with certain proteins. We started the bigger process of testing. My dad had to get special approval from the transplant nephrologist on the transplant team for the hospital in Sacramento due to Dad’s age. Eventually dad was approved and the surgery was scheduled for June of that year, but the night before I was having stomach issues, probably due to nervousness, the surgery was canceled and postponed to mid- September (the week that I’m posting this is the anniversary of the transplant surgery.) After the cancellation I had to stay in the hospital for a week because there was concern about my blood pressure. The doctors and nurses wouldn’t let me walk around and didn’t give me any leg massaging boots, which I believe cause a clot to develop in my leg and resulted in a Pulmonary Embolism to develop in my lung in a few weeks after I was discharged. I believe the mistake made by not giving me boots nor letting me walk around would ultimately lead to the stroke that would occur five years later. Stay tuned for that fun story.
The rescheduled transplant surgery did actually occur in September of 2010, but that was not without its own complications. There was issues with blood flow in the transplanted renal artery that required the surgeon to clear out. After a roughly 12 hour surgery, longer than normal, I was taken to the recovery room where I would wait to be taken to my room. I don’t remember much about the first few days of my recovery except the surgeon wasn’t sure if the surgery was successful. I do remember the amount of urine that was being emptied from my catheter bag and thinking that it went well. I won’t bore you with the rest of my recovery except to say that the two months that I had that kidney (yes, you read that right, I only had the kidney for 2 months) were the worst two months of my life. One cool thing was one day I saw one of my friends from my dialysis clinic walking by my room and after yelling for her to come by my door, I asked her what she was doing there. She said her partner, who was also a fellow dialysis patient, was in the room next door because he had gotten a transplant soon after I did. I called my nurse in to see if I could walk next door and say hi to my friend. I stood at the door and we talked for a little bit. I think his partner eventually got a kidney transplant as well.
Once I was discharged I went to stay with my mom at my grandmother’s house which was half an hour away from where the hospital was at since I needed to be close for regular clinical visits. I was nearly always sick because of the anti rejection medication that I had to take along with a bunch of other daily medications. (
I even had to go back to the hospital after a week because I was so sick. I think after a month I got the clearance to come back to Reno. And stayed with my mom and stepdad. Deter a month with them I got the clearance from one of the hospital nephrologists that I could drive and even start looking for work. There was a drawback to this proclamation however. The dr didn’t have access to my recent lab values.
(Bottle on the Right in the dark are the pills that I took at night. Bottle in the Middle with the label is used for comparison. Bottle on the Left are the pills I took in the Morning. I think I took 17 total pills a day!)
I received a call from the clinical staff that there was a problem and I needed to come back to the hospital the next morning for some tests. I had planned on driving down to my grandmother’s house that night and stay at her house then drive to the hospital in the morning. My mom suggested that I stay in town and she and I would leave early the next morning. When we got to the hospital and checked in, I was taken back to get ready for the test. Long story short, the tech couldn’t see any blood flow through the new kidney. I was admitted and after further testing it was found that pseudo aneurysms had been found in the renal artery and veins where they had been attached to my arteries during the initial transplant surgery. I was told this on a Friday. The doctors took the weekend to figure out what to do. They wouldn’t let me leave for fears that the aneurysms could rupture. So here I was stuck in a hospital bed AGAIN, while doctors figured out what to do. I couldn’t walk around because I had been put on a heparin drip, why I’m still not clear. Finally after 5pm Sunday night I was told that they “hoped” I could get in the operating room early Monday morning, but since it was after 5 on a Sunday the was no one available to schedule the surgery. I didn’t get the surgery until 3pm! By that time the new kidney hadn’t had blood flow for almost a week! So the end result is that the transplanted kidney had to be removed. I ended up spending nearly the whole month of November in the hospital before being released the Monday before Thanksgiving. My dad and I had to beat a winter storm that was coming in. I’ve been on dialysis ever since.
The last thing I’m going to tell you about is spending Christmas in the hospital. For the month of December I was having my normal dialysis treatments at my old clinic. I honestly don’t remember if I was home now or at my mom’s. Probably at Mom’s. Well I was eventually at their house for Christmas Eve and stayed there overnight. But Christmas morning I was really sick and couldn’t keep even simple things like buttered toast down. I stayed up in their guest room pretty much all day. I did make it downstairs in the evening but was still really sick we decided to go to the ER. We were told that part of the renal artery was still in my body. This was supposedly standard for my type of situation and was the reason I still had to take the anti rejection meds. I was admitted and had a surgery to remove the artery. I spent a week in the hospital recovering. I was taken off the rejection med. As seemed appropriate for a year that say me spend a good portion of 2009 in a hospital, I ended 2009 sitting in a hospital bed and in the hospital hearing the fireworks in downtown Reno as we rang in 2010.
The first ten years ended on with two good things that I’m happy to mention, I was best man at both my parents’ weddings, my mom married my stepdad in 2010 and my dad married my stepmom in 2013. And through those marriages, I’ve gained two sets of step siblings and their spouses as well as a number of nieces and nephews who I’ve gotten to watch grow older mostly through their parents’ social media accounts.
I want to be VERY CLEAR. My transplant experience is not the norm. I’ve known people who have had kidney transplants and are doing great. One friend is now a social worker for a dialysis clinic in Ohio. I believe a patient who was at my current clinic when I first started way back in 2009 and was still there when I went back to the same clinic in 2020 got a transplant and to my knowledge is doing well. So don’t let my experience influence your decision or a loved one’s decision in a negative way. In fact I am totally open to sharing my dialysis journey if someone is interested. Just have them get in contact with me or you get in touch with me.
Looking back now, I can admit that I made many mistakes. I started drinking heavily, both at home and at bars and inevitably drove home impaired. I’m convinced that the drinking was a major contributing factor to the health issues that would define 2009-2012.
I’m ending this recollection here. I could give A LOT MORE details on a few things but it would double the length of this blog

10 Stunden unterwegs
