Deacon’s station had been temporarily relocated next to yours while their headquarters were being remodeled. A firehouse, EMS station, and police headquarters all on the same block? It kept the banter between your first responder branches alive. You all spent your free time hanging out, training together, and cooking good meals to be eaten in between calls. You and your partner had just sat down with 20-David and the fire crew on for the shift when you were dispatched to a difficulty breathing call.
“Love you, Babe.” Deacon said as he chewed his mouth full of food.
“Love you too.” You responded. You had to be mindful not to kiss him or have any public displays of affection while you were on shift together. That was a BIG no no and would undoubtedly result in one of you two being moved stations. Despite being restricted on affection for 24 hours, you enjoyed sharing a station with your husband.
The rest of the house told you and your partner to be safe as you left to run the call.
You arrived on scene to find a 40 year old male having an anaphylactic reaction to some peanuts he unknowingly ingested while having a severe peanut allergy. He had given himself his epi per a friend on scene, but with no relief.
You immediately administered a second dose of epi, followed by 25 mg of benadryl, as well as a nebulizer breathing treatment. You and your partner were able to get him onto the stretcher and loaded into your ambulance where you got an IV and continued treating him on your way to the hospital. You had to admit, he was a stubborn one - as you would say. You threw the entire anaphylactic protocol at him down to intravenous epi and there still wasn’t a ton of improvement. Regardless, he wasn’t any worse by the time you dropped him off at the hospital.
You returned to service once you made it back to the station to restock. You told Deacon and Luca about the call. You were always excited to get to run good calls where you were able to use your full skill set as a paramedic. Deacon adored listening to you talk about good calls. He loved watching the spark in your eye when you talked about getting to help people and use the skills you trained hard to develop.
Deacon stood at the back doors of your ambulance while you put your supplies away.
“You are so beautiful, you know that, right?”
You looked up from your medication bag and smiled at him.
“You’re not half bad yourself, Kay.”
Your husband chuckled.
“I love getting to see you work and I love hearing you talk about getting to do your job.”
“Well, baby, you know I love what I do.”
A week later, you both were on shift together again. You were checking off your ambulance that morning while the firemen checked off their trucks and SWAT checked their gear.
You and your partner were lost in conversation together about a recent call you ran when you overheard someone asking a fireman for Paramedic Kay - you. The engineer walked the man over to you and you immediately recognized him as the anaphylactic patient you had cared for earlier in the week.
A man walking into the bays carrying an impressive bouquet of flowers caught Deacon’s eye - even more so when he heard the man ask for his wife.
“Who the hell is that?” Luca asked his teammate.
“We’re about to find out.” Deacon said, making a bee-line for your ambulance.
“These are beautiful. Thank you.” You thanked the man, taking the flowers from him as you smiled.
Your husband caught your eye as he approached the side door of your ambulance and stepped inside.
“As a thank you for saving my life, I would love to take you out to dinner one night, that is, if you would please go out with me?” The man asked.
Deacon was standing next to you as you sat in the captain’s seat in the back of the truck. You heard a low growl escape his throat.
“I thank you for your kindness and consideration, but I was simply doing my job. I love what I do, so I’m pretty good at it. However, I am married to a wonderful man.”
Deacon smirked to himself, “And even if I wasn’t married, there is a strict no-no on dating patients.”
Deacon looked at the man and noted he was visibly disappointed.
“There’s nothing I can say to change your mind?” The man asked.
As professional as you were trying to remain, your kindness was quickly wearing thin when the man asked you again after you had revealed to him you were married, but Deacon didn’t leave you time to respond.
“Brother, I believe she told you that she was married.”
Your patient became obviously disgruntled.
“Marriages don’t mean much now-a-days.”
You could tell that struck a nerve with your husband. His posture became more upright and he held his hand out towards the man, expecting a handshake. You kept silent to watch the scene unfold. You noticed Luca had approached the back doors of the ambulance as well.
“My apologies, I forgot to introduce myself to you,” Deacon began, “I’m SWAT Sergeant David Kay. Paramedic Kay is my wife.”
The man stuttered and turned around to leave without responding or shaking your husband’s hand.
“Don’t forget. Keep your epi pen somewhere that’s room temperature and replace them when they expire!” Your partner reminded the man as he walked off.
Once the man was out of earshot, you could no longer contain your laugher.
“Really?” You said, laughing at your partner.
Your partner shrugged.
“Fucker.” You heard Deacon mumble.
When you arrived home the next morning with your husband, you were undressing from your uniforms.
“David Kay,” you said sternly with a slight sensual tone in your voice.
“Yes ma’am?” He turned around after taking his shirt off.
You felt butterflies in your stomach. You always secretly loved when Deacon said ma’am to you, or called you mama, or his ole lady.
“Was that jealousy that I saw in you yesterday?”
You smirked and made your way over to your husband. You wrapped your arms around his neck.
“And if it was?” His voice was low and sensual.
“I’ve never seen that side of you like that before.” You rubbed the back of his neck with your finger tips.
“That’s because no man has openly disrespected you like that in front of me before. You are my wife. That should be respected.”
“You know I have eyes for you…” you traced his pecs and abs down to his belt with your fingers, “and only you.”
You stood up on your tip toes to kiss your husband.
He wrapped his arms around you, groping your ass with his hands, and moaned into the kiss.
You spent the day showing your husband that he was the only one you would ever want.

An international charity with extensive experience in providing emergency aid in wars, famines and earthquakes throughout the Middle East and in Afghanistan is being forced to pay $5,000 a truck to a company linked to Egypt’s General Intelligence Service (GIS) to get aid into Gaza.
The charity, which does not want to be named to avoid obstruction to its relief efforts in Gaza, spoke to Middle East Eye in outrage at having to pay what it openly describes as a bribe to a state-linked agent.
A spokesman for the charity said: “We have worked around the world in times of war, earthquakes and other disasters, but we have never been treated like this by a state who is profiteering from the dispatch of humanitarian goods. It’s draining a lot of our resources and the bribe being paid is per truck.”
The charity said the money is being paid in the form of a “management fee” to a company affiliated with the Sons of Sinai, a construction and contracting firm owned by the Sinai businessman, Ibrahim al-Organi, and part of his Organi Group. He heads the Tarabin tribe in the Sinai desert bordering Israel and owns a company that is a joint venture with two companies owned by the GIS.
The Organi Group is alleged in media reports to be the ultimate beneficiary of a lucrative sale of “fast-track” permits for Palestinians wishing to escape from Israel's war on the Gaza Strip.
An investigation carried out by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and independent Egyptian website, Saheeh Masr, found that intermediaries were selling exit permits at prices ranging from $4,500 to $10,000 for Palestinians and $650 to $1,200 for Egyptians.
As desperation in Gaza has increased, the price for a passage out of the enclave has gone up to $10,000 per person, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported recently. The price for commercial traffic going into Gaza charged by companies owned by Organi is $9,000 a truck, although the cost of the fare charged by truckers is commonly just $300 a load.
A spokesperson for Unrwa, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees providing vital support in Gaza, told Middle East Eye it is not paying fees to transfer aid into the enclave from Egypt.
Bleak situation
The charity’s statement to MEE is the first concrete evidence of Egypt or Egyptian government-linked parties demanding a cut from the humanitarian aid going into Gaza, which already is subject to weeklong delays incurred by Israel.
Earlier this month, James Heappey, the British minister of state for the armed forces, said that over 150 tonnes of humanitarian aid delivered to Egypt by the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is waiting to be transferred into Gaza.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza is bleak. More than 26,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war broke out in October, and on Sunday, a UN expert said famine in the enclave was “inevitable”.
Last week, Middle East Eye spoke to five families from Gaza who all confirmed that they had paid fees in the thousands, mostly in US dollars or Euros, to mediators who then facilitated their exit from Gaza.
Besan, a Palestinian who arranged for her mother to leave Gaza, said of her Suez-based mediator: “He told us that he works with Egyptian security and that he would pull strings to put our mother’s name on the list.”
Egypt denied it is profiteering from this trade at the Rafah border. In a statement published on 10 January, the head of Egypt’s State Information Service, Diaa Rashwan, rejected the “unfounded allegations” that additional fees are being imposed on Palestinians at the crossing.
A parallel “fast-track” system for getting through Rafah has been in place for years, with Gaza-based agents demanding several thousand dollars for quick passage. But this market has boomed since Israel’s ground attack started and the desperation of internally displaced Palestinians has grown.
One of the companies allegedly involved in the trade is Hala Consulting and Tourism, an Egyptian travel agency. This is one of eight companies operating under Organi’s chief arm, the Organi Group.
Another company in the same group is Misr Sinai, a joint venture with the Egyptian defence ministry’s industrial conglomerate, the National Services Projects Organisation (NSPO)
Organi said in an interview with Youm7 in 2014 that the NSPO owned 51 percent of Misr Sinai’s shares, in partnership with two companies owned by the GIS. “As you can see, all state entities are in this company. This gives us an advantage,” Organi said in the interview.
Denying responsibility
Organi’s companies first surfaced in 2014 when Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi announced an initiative to rebuild houses destroyed in Gaza by Israel’s Operation Protective Edge. The Organi Group was named as one of the beneficiaries.
Hala Company for Consulting and Tourism Services was relaunched in 2021 to “exclusively undertake the transportation of travellers to and from the Gaza Strip”.
At that time, the cross-border traffic managed by Hala was described by Egyptian sources speaking to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed in 2021 as part of a response by Cairo to “a major demand of the Palestinian factions regarding facilitating travel through the Rafah crossing to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinians”.

Egypt has denied profiteering from the crossing at Rafah and from being responsible for the long tailbacks of lorries carrying humanitarian aid at the Egyptian side of the border.
During its defence against charges of committing genocide in Gaza, in a case brought to the International Court of Justice earlier this month, Israel’s defence team accused Cairo of being responsible for preventing the entry of humanitarian aid into the enclave.  
Speaking in Somalia, Sisi accused Israel of holding up the trucks on the Gaza side of the Rafah border.
He said: “If I am the reason for not letting a loaf of bread into Gaza, how could I face God?”
MEE asked Egypt’s State Information Service to comment on the charity’s claim that it had to pay $5,000 a truck to agents linked to the General Intelligence Service, but they failed to reply by the time of publication.
Middle East Eye has also asked the Organi Group and Sons of Sinai for comment.

A video showing military police dragging away two Russian soldiers circulated on social media on November 20, appearing on both Ukrainian and Russian Telegram channels. The pro-war channel Veteran’s Notes (Zapiski Veterana), which was among the first to publish the footage, indicated that it had been recorded in the Belgorod region. Legal experts told Meduza that this demonstration was designed to intimidate Russian soldiers who might resist being sent to the frontlines in Ukraine.

The video shows a commander summoning two soldiers before an entire unit, one at a time. With each soldier, a police investigator informs him that, as of November 16, he is charged with disobeying military orders (Article 332 of Russia’s Criminal Code). An armed escort then arrests the soldier and drags him to a waiting police vehicle. The first arrest is said to take place at 1:30 p.m., the second at 2:17 p.m.
The military police twist the arms of one of these soldiers, rifling through his pockets. At the end of the video, the commander mentions that the unit will be lined up again at 3 p.m. It isn’t clear if anyone else was arrested then.
According to administrators at Veteran’s Notes (one of the first Telegram channels to circulate the video), the two arrested soldiers belong to different units, and the criminal case against them is connected to their refusal to serve in Ukraine. “First verbally, and then in written form,” the two of them “refused to follow the unit commander’s orders to go to the combat zone,” reported the channel.
The two arrested soldiers’ full names are still unverified. Only their surnames, Selivanov and Degtyaryov, are clearly audible in the video. It’s also unconfirmed whether they were contract soldiers or new draftees.
Maxim Grebenyuk, the military attorney behind the Military Ombudsman (Voyenny Ombudsmen) Telegram channel, points out that “it’s completely unnecessary to arrest a soldier on the military unit’s grounds.” The only reason to take someone into custody like this, he explains, is to send a message and “teach everyone else a lesson.” If the arrested soldiers are not under contract, the case against them will probably “fall apart,” Grebenyuk expects.
Tatiana Degtyaryova, the wife of one of the arrested soldiers, told the news outlet Poligon.Media that her husband Yuri Degtyaryov had recently returned from Ukraine and now refuses to go back. She says her husband was arrested on November 17 and awaits trial in Voronezh. Here’s how Degtyaryova described her husband’s situation:
He was mobilized on September 22 without any prior combat experience. His mandatory term of service was 10 years ago. After receiving his draft letter, he was moved to the town of Boguchar in the Voronezh region. He spent two weeks there, without any training as such.
Later, she explains, the draftees were brought to the Luhansk region. They arrived at night and immediately found themselves under fire. Without any commanders to lead them, the soldiers decided to retreat, she says. The men were later sent to an army unit stationed outside Belgorod, where senior officials tried again to intimidate them into returning to the frontlines. Degtyaryova says her husband and his comrades nevertheless refused to be treated like “cannon fodder.”
Citing other conscripts’ relatives, Degtyaryova said her husband wasn’t the only soldier to reject orders to return to the combat zone:
The next day, they loaded them into Kamaz trucks and drove in an unknown direction. There are rumors that those who agreed were taken back to the frontline, and the others — to basements somewhere.
This is not the first criminal case in Russia against soldiers accused of disobeying wartime orders. In late October, human rights lawyer Pavel Chikov described another case where the defendant allegedly defied a combat dispatch order, “thereby refusing to participate in combat.”
Moscow-based analyst Mikhail Pozharsky explains that refusing to fight on the pretext of insufficient training or inadequate equipment is the best legal defense for any Russian soldier trying to avoid deployment to Ukraine (whether his actual motives are conscientious or otherwise). “If you’re against the war, and you have been drafted, and you’re not a political activist, your most rational position is to talk about the absence of gear and preparation,” Pozharsky wrote on Telegram. Since the Russian army is unlikely to solve its supply and personnel problems anytime soon, this is the safest legal strategy, as it avoids the criminal risks of pleading objections to the invasion on the grounds of freedom of thought, conscience, or religion.

More than a decade ago, the logistics industry was still in the port-to-port era, which we called Logistics 1.0. Later, it evolved to door-to-door services, which we termed Logistics 2.0. Nowadays, our company has developed into a one-stop logistics solution provider offering procurement + door-to-door services. Take last year's case of transporting electronics worth 40 million yuan for Huawei to South America. We took charge of the entire process and planned the voyage route ourselves. Ultimately, the goods departed from Shenzhen and, instead of taking the conventional route through Miami in North America, were transported through Europe to their South American destination. Saudi client Mariam has been importing daily necessities from China, including kitchenware, decorations, and party supplies, mainly sourced from Yiwu. In the beginning, every time Mariam prepared a purchasing list, she had to come to China specially to inspect the factories and goods herself and monitored the loading and unloading of the containers at our warehouse before she felt assured.
