Lessons in Fear

Rated E • Published 2021 • Completed 2021 • Word count 49k
Yugi Muto hasn't stepped foot in Camp Crawford - a well loved local summer camp nestled amongst the spruce trees - in almost fourteen years, following an accident he's done his best to forget, and he was content to keep it that way. But after the retirement of his grandfather, who helped run the camp for almost forty years, Yugi reluctantly agrees to go and help set it up for the upcoming summer against his own better judgement. But childhood memories, ghost stories and camp legends aren't the only things waiting for him in the woods. And something is itching to finish what was left undone fourteen years ago.

admin's notes: i have a type okay, and it's haunted-cabin-in-the-woods horror/mystery. a really clever intertwining of Yugi's mysterious traumatic past, and the suspense of his current-day interactions with the stranger at the camp that kept me guessing until the end.
@saijspellhart says: A delightful story about Yugi taking on a job to clean up a campground before summer break. He’s supposed to be alone in the woods, but he isn’t. And this camp hides something far more sinister.
Basically this story checks off a lot of my favorite things. Horror, romance, spookiness, great atmosphere and setting. Excellent writing. I was enthralled the entire read.

It wasn’t fair. It wasn’t right. Billy sat in the dark, eyes closed, listening to the clock on the mantle tick and the refrigerator hum. Steve Harrington was nothing to him, a regret, maybe, a bitter taste in his mouth, but not a friend. If Billy was resentful, he thought maybe he’d see the logic in the afterlife pinning them together, but he didn’t feel a sense of longing or torment, didn’t feel like he was being pulled between life and death, or between realms. He just was, painless, lead in his belly as he sat on the floor by Steve’s feet.
If he was meant to be trying to get somewhere, he didn’t know where. Was he supposed to pass on? He curled his knees up to his chest and watched Steve sleep, Steve’s lips shiny with spit and hair hanging over his forehead.
Or, how to find love as a ghost.

Yugi doesn't believe in ghosts. He never has and, up until now, he thought he never would. But when he moves into his new apartment, things start disappearing, doors start slamming, and an ancient crown has it out for him. He's forced to face reality: he's living in a haunted house. But will he be "living," there for long?

Admin's notes: This was the first fic that gobbled my brain whole when I came back to yugioh after a very long break. It is such a fun, wild ride with the best mix of modern life dashed with historical fiction, supernatural shenanigans, and domestic fluff.

Admin's notes: "Reconfiguration" is perhaps the authors most well-known fic (and is amazing), but this is hands down my favourite work by them. haunted cabin in the woods amirite. it's so eerie and suspenseful and the angst with an angsty ending FUELS me. i've re-read it like eight times.
