Katya knew a thing or two about bitter winters; could still feel the deep chill down to his bones after hours spent making snow forts and mazes in the middle of a Nor’easter in his youth — the kind of cold that was barely touched by endless cups of hot cocoa or bowls of hearty stew.

He had packed what seemed like every pair of socks he owned along with the winter hats from the back of his dresser drawer. But nothing could have prepared him for the absolutely arctic temperatures of Wisconsin in the dead of winter.

Ice clung to everything, weighing down the power lines and plunging the town into darkness.

Pulling another wool blanket up to his chin, he turned on his side and rubbed his legs together. “Think we need to combine our body heat, Tritzie.”

There’s something familiar about her. For a moment, her skin seems to shine like the inside of a seashell, pearlescent and almost glowing, and Katya thinks it might just be the sunset, but she knows it isn’t. Her eyes are large and dark, framed with thick lashes, and with a jolt, Katya remembers looking into those same eyes, on this same beach, almost twenty-five years ago.

“You,” she breathes. Her heart is thumping wildly against her ribcage, and she feels a peculiar sensation creeping over her body. She knows this woman.

Berlin

Trixie's brow furrowed, not really knowing how to interpret this mood. The last time Katya had been this coy was on Trixie's birthday, when they stood outside in an alley after Katya said he wanted to smoke. A few of Trixie's close friends sat inside the restaurant for a late dinner, and as the two stepped outside Katya leaned against the brick wall, not making any moves to pull out a cigarette or lighter. When Trixie had asked what was going on, Katya just looked at him, deep eyes and shallow breaths, then traced a finger along Trixie's collarbone, longing for something he couldn't say out loud.

Summary: Trixie makes a joke onstage that causes Katya to leave the second the show is over. Left with a thousand racing thoughts, Trixie goes to figure out why Katya is so upset, and finds that it isn't so much about hurt feelings, but about other feelings entirely.

Katya’s lit cigarette almost served as a flare, Trixie thought as he walked toward the smoldering tip and the smell of smoke.

His bus had been ahead of Katya’s, everyone blissfully unaware of what was happening until the music overhead stopped and their bus driver’s voice came over the speakers. They got off the highway, taking main roads to circle back to the interstate entrance. Trixie’s eyes were already scanning the side of the road as they pulled ahead of the broken down bus on the shoulder.

“Katya!” Trixie yelled as he approached, unable to wait until he reached his friend’s side.
