Japan is often called “the land of the rising sun”. Many people from around the world wonder why Japan is called the land of the rising sun. Is this because Japan is the first country to see the sun? In Japanese, the country is called Nihon (Nippon). Both Nihon and Japan originate from the same words; they literally mean “where the sun rises”. The English term for Japan's national flag is "the rising sun flag." The Japanese flag with the sun in the middle was first flown at the start of the seventh century. It is said, nevertheless, that the flag's color scheme was altered from what it is today. A red background with a golden sun was the initial color scheme. It is the focus of the vast metropolitan area often called Greater Tokyo, the largest urban and industrial agglomeration in Japan (The editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica ,2023).

In Japan, a Buddhist temple serves as the site of funeral rites for deceased people and a Shinto shrine serves as the location for birth ceremonies. In Japan, individuals take off their shoes when they enter a house and bathe nearly every day because they are so concerned about hygiene. The fact that there are no garbage cans in public spaces and everything is still clean surprises a lot of visitors (Acar, 2023).

Compared to other countries, Japan has relatively more festivals because Japanese religions are related to the harvest and the change of the seasons. Each of Japan's 47 prefectures has a different festival, usually held in the summer. Locals usually wear yukata and sandals to participate in the festival. One of the biggest parade in Japan is the Gion Festival in Kyoto that started in the 8th century when there was an epidemic like the corona virus (Acar, 2023).

In Japan you should know some of the rules before visiting the place. Some of the rules are when taking public transportation in Japan, it is important to know a couple of things. Talking loudly to friends on the train, chatting on the phone and blasting music through headphones are all very much frowned upon in Japan. Using chopsticks properly is very important in Japan, it is not expected of you to be able to use chopsticks as a tourist in Japan but the Japanese will be super impressed if you do. Most restaurants will have forks on hand if you need one (Ciara, 2023).

Sa paglalakbay sa maraming lugar, hindi lamang ang ating mga paa ang naglalakbay, kundi pati na rin ang ating mga puso't isipan. Ang bawat paglalakbay ay isang pagkakataon upang tuklasin ang mga bagong tanawin, kultura, at karanasan na maaaring magpabago sa ating pananaw sa buhay. Ang bayan ng Mariveles, na matatagpuan sa pinakatimog na bahagi ng Bataan, ay kilala bilang "tahanan ng unang export processing zone" sa Pilipinas na itinatag noong 1970. Sa aking karanasan sa Mariveles, Bataan, natuklasan ko ang kahanga-hangang kagandahan ng kalikasan at kasaysayan nito. Sa paglalakbay sa lugar, nakita ko ang mga magagandang tanawin ng bundok at dagat na nagbibigay inspirasyon at kapayapaan sa aking puso. Sa bawat hakbang na aking ginawa sa Mariveles, Bataan, tila ba ang kalikasan mismo ang sumasalubong sa akin, handang ipamalas ang kanyang kahanga-hangang ganda at kasaysayan. Hong Kong Air Cargo Renews IOSA Registration

Hong Kong Air Cargo has successfully renewed its IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) registration for the next two years. Effective 9 February 2020 through to 8 February 2022. The IATA IOSA is internationally recognised and accepted as an evaluation programme designed to assess the operational management and control systems of an airline. Hong Kong Air Cargo was first awarded full IATA membership in January 2019. As a member of IATA, Hong Kong Air Cargo is required to pass the IOSA audit every two years. During the past year, the airline continued to improve its services and provide outstanding cargo services to its customers and to Hong Kong. Jevey ZHANG, Chairman and President of Hong Kong Air Cargo said, “We are honoured to once again renew our IATA IOSA registration. We have been working hard to ensure our daily operation processes meet global standards and we have an outstanding team who take pride in the fact that we are recognised both by our customers and IATA as a global player.” Hong Kong Air Cargo currently operates a fleet of five Airbus A330-200 freighters. The Sanchaya resort in Bintan, Indonesia, has appointed Elena Nazarovici as Director of Sales.

Elena, who has over 15 years of hospitality industry experience, joins The Sanchaya from the Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, Maldives where she worked most recently as Director of Sales & Marketing. Originally from Romania, Elena's first role in hospitality took her to Sharm el Sheikh, where she spent over seven years at the Domina Coral Bay Hotel, Resort, Spa and Casino. From there, Elena joined the sales team at the InterContinental Doha. Elena is fluent in English and Italian, and is also able to speak Egyptian Arabic. Cebu Pacific Cancels All Flights to Hong Kong and Macau

Cebu Pacific has cancelled all flights between Philippines and Hong Kong, as well as Macau, until 29 February 2020. Flights to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Xiamen in mainland China have been cancelled until 29 March 2020. Foreigners, except those who have PR in Philippines, who've visited those cities, or elsewhere in China, within the past 14 days won't be allowed to check-in for their flight.

Filipinos and PR holders arriving in back Philippines on international flights who have been to mainland China, HK and/or Macau with 14 days of the date of arrival will be required to undergo a home quarantine process. Travellers who are concerned whether they are affected by these Cebu Pacific decisions should contact the airline directly. Cebu Pacific has said that passengers will be able to rebook their flights or get a refund. Terms and conditions apply. Vietnam Airlines Makes Changes to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Flights

Vietnam Airlines has temporarily resumed flights connecting Vietnam to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau in an effort to ferry stranded passengers back home. Flights between Vietnam and Taiwan reverted to normal operational status on Sunday, 2 February. Vietnam Airlines' flights connecting Hanoi and Saigon to Hong Kong will be in operation until 5 February, after which the Hanoi – Hong Kong route will again be suspended.

The Saigon - Hong Kong route will remain in operation after 5 February, but the airline has said that it will closely monitor demand and potentially adjust the flight frequency as needed. Flights between Hanoi and Macau resumed operation on 2 February and will be suspended again on 5 February 2020. Jetstar Pacific will continue operating flights between Hanoi and Hong Kong until 5 February, while flights between Vietnam and Taiwan will remain operational. Qatar Airways Becomes Official Airline of Paris Saint-Germain

Qatar Airways has become a Premium Partner and the Official Airline Partner of Paris Saint-Germain, one of France’s most successful football clubs, for the next three seasons. Wyndham Appoints Andy Flaig as Head of Development

Wyndham Hotels & Resorts has appointed Andy Flaig as Head of Development - South East Asia and Pacific Rim (SEAPR). Based in Singapore, Andy will lead Wyndham's development strategies through the expansion of its brands and portfolio of managed and franchised hotels across the region.

Andy replaces David Wray who has completed his transition agreement with the hotel company and will remain with Wyndham Destinations Asia Pacific. “The South East Asia and Pacific Rim is a dynamic region brimming with potential and home to emerging markets like Vietnam and Myanmar that are starting to attract tourists in unprecedented numbers. I am excited to lead Wyndham’s development strategy in the region and look forward to building new relationships with owners and partners to drive strong returns under the Wyndham portfolio of hotel brands,” said Andy Flaig, Head of Development, SEAPR, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. Andy joins Wyndham Hotels & Resorts with more than three decades of experience in the hospitality sector. He worked most recently as Group Chief Development Officer at Next Story Group where he was responsible for the growth of their hotel and lifestyle co-working brands. Before that, Andy spent four years with Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group as Executive Vice President, Development and Technical Services for Asia Pacific, and eight years as Managing Director of Jones Lang LaSalle’s Hotels and Hospitality Group’s Advisory business in Asia. “Andy comes to Wyndham with a proven track record in the areas of hotel development, investment, and asset management. WTTC Moves April’s Global Summit from Puerto Rico to Mexico

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has confirmed that its annual Global Summit will now be held in Cancun, Mexico, and not in Puerto Rico as originally planned. The event had been scheduled to take place in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from 21 – 23 April 2020. Earlier this month a series of earthquakes hit the island causing damage to buildings. Puerto Rico has said that the financial resources that had been set aside to host the event, will instead be used for marketing efforts that promote the country’s “open for tourism” message and drive immediate visitor numbers to the Island.

Gloria Guevara, President & CEO of WTTC, said, “WTTC remains strongly committed to supporting Puerto Rico’s amazing comeback story as seen in their record-breaking year in tourism last year. Although the Island was ready to welcome us with open arms this April, despite the recent seismic activity in the southern region, reallocating resources to continue this great momentum is the right thing to do in order to further boost tourism. We are looking forward to hosting an event in Puerto Rico later this year.” The WTTC Summit will be held in Cancun, Mexico, from 21 - 23 April 2020, with the dates for another official WTTC event in San Juan, Puerto Rico, expected to be announced in the near future. “This switch to Cancun will enable us to host a Global Summit focused on the opportunities and challenges facing our sector in 2020 and beyond, which will help to grow tourism further. The 20th Global Summit will benefit and showcase not only Mexico, but the wider regions of the US, Latin America and the Caribbean,” added Ms. Guevara. CWT Appoints Richard Thompson as Vice President of Global Internal Communications & Culture

CWT has appointed Richard Thompson as Vice President of Global Internal Communications & Culture. In this newly expanded role, Richard and his team will be responsible for the development of CWT culture, employee engagement, people strategy and HR analytics, in addition to continuing his charge of global internal communications. Richard, a member of both the Human Resources and Traveler Experience leadership teams, reports to Catherine Maguire-Vielle, CWT’s Executive Vice President & Chief Human Resources Officer.

Richard will relocate from Paris to CWT HQ in Minneapolis. “Having spent the last three years transforming, shaping and successfully delivering on CWT’s global employee communication strategy, Richard’s knowledge and understanding of our business, people and culture is second to none,” said Catherine Maguire-Vielle. “It’s this experience alongside Richard’s extensive change communication acumen that positions him perfectly to take our people strategy to new heights as a source of measurable value for our employees, customers and company operations alike.” Having joined the company as a Global Employee Communications Director in 2016, Richard was promoted a year later to head of Global Internal Communications. He and his team were instrumental in building CWT Buzz, the company’s enterprise social intranet and online employee community. Prior to joining CWT, Richard spent over 25 years consulting in the automotive, manufacturing and B2B spaces with companies like Nissan Europe, Capgemini, Technip and Cargill where he successfully addressed the change and corporate communication challenges faced by multinational companies during global transformations. Richard has a Bachelor of English Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Hahn Air Simplifies Distribution of Corporate Shuttle Flights

Hahn Air has launched HR-Corporate, a new solution for companies that offer corporate shuttle flights. By providing a complete package that includes the management, handling and distribution of company flights, HR-Corporate allows corporations to completely outsource their corporate shuttle business.

Hahn Air used the inventory system of its sister company Hahn Air Systems to make the shuttle flights available in the GDS. The company’s dedicated business travel company can therefore easily book the flights under the Hahn Air code HR via the standard reservation and ticketing processes and issue them on a Hahn Air HR-169 ticket. Air Astana Reports 2019 Net Profit Increase of 461%

Kazakhstan’s Air Astana has reported an unaudited net profit of US$30.03 million for 2019, up from US$5.3 million in 2018. The airline carried 5.058 million passengers, an increase of 17% on 2018, with total airline revenue up by 6% to US$893 million. Unit cost was lower at 5.5 US cents per Available Seat Kilometre.

President and CEO, Peter Foster OBE, said, “Passenger demand improved considerably during the year, driven by a significant increase in charter operations and by increased demand primarily on domestic routes, as a result of the successful launch of our Low-Cost Airline FlyArystan on 1st May 2019. Whilst yields have been affected by increased competition on international routes, reduced average domestic ticket prices and the lower value of the Kazakh Tenge, this was more than offset by increased demand and lower unit cost.” Looking forward, Foster said, “FlyArystan continues to grow ahead of expectations, and certain structural changes, such as the move to Domodedovo Airport at Moscow in line with the comprehensive S7 codeshare, and replacement of the Boeing 757 fleet by Airbus 321 Long Range aircraft, enable us to be cautiously optimistic. ANA to Operate International Flights Out of Haneda T2 and T3 from 29 March

All Nippon Airways (ANA) has confirmed that it will start operating both domestic and international flights out of Terminal 2 at Haneda Airport (HND) in Tokyo, and continue to serve international flights out of Terminal 3 starting on 29 March 2020. With domestic and international flights at Terminal 2, passengers will no longer need to transfer between terminals to reach their connecting flight. The minimum connecting time (MCT) for domestic to international connections within Terminal 2 will be reduced from 70 minutes to 55 minutes.

“ANA has expanded its international service in order to meet the growing demand for travel to Japan, and the changes at Haneda Airport will equip us to meet passenger needs,” said Masaki Yokai, Senior Vice President of ANA. “We are excited about the prospect of strengthening our ability to offer convenient and efficient travel to our growing customer base.” Terminal 3 was formerly known as the International Terminal, and its new name was initially announced in February 2019. Officials at Haneda Airport chose to rename the terminal to simplify the flight experience for passengers. In light of these changes, ANA encourages passengers to check which terminal their flight will depart from before arriving at the airport.
