■Valero Energy in four months increased its purchases of Venezuelan crude oil from Chevron by 1,300%.

The refining company Valero Energy was the main client of Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) in the United States until the beginning of 2019, when the sanctions imposed by the government of Donald Trump came into force, preventing all purchases.

Now, in 2023, it is once again the main recipient of Venezuelan crude, but exclusively because of the purchases it makes from Chevron: in four months - between February and May of this year - shipments have risen by more than 1,300%, a variation that in absolute numbers indicates a jump from 8,500 to 121,600 barrels per day.

Designing Wake Forest Residence Hall Flags

The popular question asked from freshman to freshman: “Where are you living?”

One’s loyalty to their freshmen residence hall is often stronger than it appears. We wanted to add another fun element to our beloved residence halls by designing a flag for each of them. We took inspiration from the existing freshman residence hall logos and the who the residence hall was named after. Here’s our designs for our freshman residence halls.

Angelou Residence Hall

Maya Angelou- poet, civil rights activist, and Wake Forest professor - served as inspiration for this residence hall. Inspired by the cover of her work, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, I meshed the vibrant colors with a classic “bend” flag design (as used on the flag of Tanzania, Namibia, Trinidad and Tobago), with the black bird centered in the middle.

Babcock Residence Hall

Taken from inspiration from its existing emblem, the calming green and blue encircle the insect as if it were on a lily pad. Babcock Residence Hall was named after Mary Reynolds Babcock, who donated over 300 acres of land to Wake Forest with her husband. The natural colors and bug represent Mrs. Babcock’s passion for gardening. The use of an animal on the flag can be compared to flags from Mexico, Kiribati, and Bolivia.

Bostwick Residence Hall

Jabez Bostwick, known as the father of the Wake Forest endowment, left $1.5 million to the school in his will in 1923. CEO of two major railroads in New England, Bostwick was drawn to Wake Forest College due to its Baptist affiliation. Sampling the purple and train symbol from the emblem, the sharp purple edges present the train as pushing forward with full steam ahead. The use of triangles is also reflected in flags like Saint Lucia and Antigua and Barbuda.

Collins Residence Hall

Born in 1961, William Avery Collins was a major University benefactor from Wake Forest. Using the same color scheme from the existing Collins logo, we created the flag using a chevron design. This chevron design scheme can be seen in flags like the Bahamas, Cuba, Czech Republic, and Philippines. 

Johnson Residence Hall

Named after the University’s first Dean of women, Lois Johnson also received the Medallion of Merit in 1973. Inspired by the colors of the medallion, this flag also alludes to Johnson’s fight for gender equality on campus. During her time, she presided over the arrival of women on campus in the 1940s. A similar use of the cross is reflected in the flags of England and Denmark

Luter Residence Hall

As you may know, the Luter family has started and owned Smithfield Foods - the largest pork producer in the world! Joseph Williamson Luter III held the title of CEO for 31 years and helped the company grow to its worldwide status. Earning his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1962, Joseph Luter’s time at Wake Forest is cemented by this residence hall. The wavy, warm hues on the flag represent crispy strips of bacon, as a nod to Smithfield’s pork. The fess element of this flag can be compared to the flags of Spain, Lebanon, and Cambodia.

South Residence Hall

Opened in 2010, South Residence Hall boasts a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) style. Through its sustainable design, South Residence Hall reflects the importance of reducing consumption. The yellow silhouette of the lighthouse references the scenery of North Carolina cities, such as New Bern, where Samuel Wait spent much time helping develop Wake Forest University. The use of a singular star is also used in the national flags of Chile, Djibouti, and Myanmar.
