Thinking about all the trigun (primarily vashwood) aus I've gotten to read and see art of and if there are any I have -not- seen yet and you know what hit me? Figure-skating au. (remembering when YOI was at it's peak and every fandom under the sun got an iceskating au).

And you know as far as parallel themes to cannon go it practically writes itself?? Vash and Knives as a paired skating team, Knives suddenly can't compete for their upcoming season (injury from them doing a move together? Vash wanting to split because of personal conflict? could spin it a few ways depending on what story elements you wanted to focus on), enter Wolfwood, a lesser-known solo skater doing exceptionally well in his smaller events, who is offered some insane sum of money to go be Vash's partner (taking it to support the orphanage ofc).

Usual vashwood conflict and cooperation in spades as they circle each other like anxious sharks while reading each other for filth; being a super intuitive and great skating pair while emotionally growing way way past both their lines of 'person I am working with because of circumstances' to 'genuine friend but we don't talk about that' to 'most important person in my life who has seen every bare crater of the landscape of my soul and did not look away from any of it oh god when did this development happen'

If you want to make WW's position even spicier and tie in his betrayal guilt you could have Knives be paying him to appeal as Vash's partner out of all the other picks, so that he can maintain control of Vash and inform WW of how he wants Vash's intense training regime to be upheld (again lots of ways you could spin this depending on what the focus of their relationships are; if you're going for something a lot more mentally fucked up and close to cannon or playing with the kinder world of a modern au)
