Angel Arm

in Stampede, Vash triggers the angel arm himself by fusing the converged Gate into his gun; while in the manga, Knives alone triggers it in Vash.

of course, Stampede Vash wouldn't have had the means to summon the angel arm if Knives hadn't already opened his Gate... but there's something to be said about Vash seizing his agency back from Knives and using his power himself.

Time for volume two! Things are picking up steam; we’re switching over to Trimax next week and I anxiously await more angst.

I feel bad for Nightow, having to deal with getting canceled right as the story was getting started in earnest. I hear that this was around when the 98 anime was made, as well? If so, they really didn’t have much to go off of. One of these days I should watch that series, too.

This occurred to me when I was watching Tristamp first, but it’s fascinating how Vash feels so... relatable? I am by no means a space western gunbattle manga protagonist, but he’s an incredibly compelling and unique character. I had to go back and remove a sentence after I realized I was writing in first person as if I were Vash himself. (“The first time *I* encountered Legato?” I’ve never met Legato and I hope I never do.)

I suppose it’s a testament to how well-written this series is, making us all feel empathy for this fictional man.

Now for some specific thoughts:

-Interesting that the villains have actual McGuffins to give to Vash in this version. In Tristamp I got more of a feeling that they were just a loose collective of Knives devotees? Here there’s an official numbering system and everything. I suspect we won’t be learning what that coin box does for a good while…

-This strikes me as a pretty assertive move on Vash’s part, compared to his Tristamp self getting dragged head first into the plot whether he wanted to or not. He’s taking up the protagonist mantle (and all the tragedy that comes with it) a bit faster here.

-Well this is... surprisingly nice for a guy who previously delivered a severed head in a bag. “Good luck ladies, spend your time wisely before Knives inevitably exterminates you along with the rest of humanity <3”

-Wolfwood!! I’m not gonna lie, my confirmation bias made me misread this line as “trans man” multiple times. I blame the sheer amount of t4t Vashwood shippers who constantly create amazing art.

-I have seen this panel before, as part of a “Trigun out of context” meme. Knowing the context still does not diminish the sheer power of… whatever this is. Nightow is living his artistic dreams ; )

-Aaaand we‘re now at Knives’ rather disturbing attempt to force Vash’s angel arm. Here I was going on about how Vash is so easy to empathize and identify with, then the story hits us with this. It’s such a shame that in this version, there’s no one to come back and snap him out of it, so he has to shoot himself to downgrade from annihilating the planet to “just” wrecking a moon. Meryl, where are you when we need you? Also, poor Wolfwood, screaming at the sky, way out of his depth with no damn idea what is happening.

-There are several gorgeous splash pages in this last chapter, but this one is my personal favorite. What a devastating sentiment.

Vash's relieved face is so soft as he looks at Monev... like he's already realized that it's Rollo and he still has a chance to save him just like he promised 20 years ago.

(Side note: which God does Vash believe in? the god that Rollo worships is Knives? maybe? but Vash is probably talking about the christian god?)

Vash is finally there for Rollo, but...he's just too late.

Vash's final moments with Rollo are so tender compared with his final moments with Monev in the manga where Monev is literally begging for his life. Vash really looks like he might kill him, but ultimately holds back so as to not hurt Rem's memory.

they're both highly emotional moments, but the payout is so different! I like the direction Stampede took with making Monev a thoroughly sympathetic character instead of just some villain.

Just finished Trimax Volume 2, because this time I managed to schedule my posts properly. I read these chapters all in one go- they flow so nicely that I couldn’t help it.

-Oh so this is the fabled saxophone-gun (saxogun?) I’ve heard about. It is very very ridiculous but also very very cool and that’s good enough for both me and Nightow himself. Who needs logic when you can have SAXOGUN. Midvalley the Hornfreak is also an equally ridiculous name, but Star Wars has already desensitized me to this sort of thing, so yes! He sure is a Hornfreak!

-“He’s not like he was before. He never used to make such a mess at the table before Knives snapped his spine.” Okay, buddy, you might want to save the gossiping about Legato for a time when Legato won’t hear you and crush you like a pretzel. Just some advice.

-As an Asian American adoptee with little to no Asian cultural and linguistic knowledge.. I know this feeling, and it’s wildly embarrassing. Vash is doing his best : )

-Speaking of Star Wars, the second I saw the sword I expected bullet parrying action. But this is Trigun, so it is also a gun. Ezra Bridger would be proud.

-This moment... god. I don’t have much to add to the analysis of my fellow readers, but after reading this I felt a sudden rush of appreciation for this manga and all things Trigun. It’s the ideological dispute for the ages, right here.

-Okay, I admittedly forgot about the puppet thing, so this scene confused me for a few seconds. Once I remembered, I had about the same expression Vash does here…blank shock and emotional devastation. I love, and by love I mean hate, how the reveal was perfectly timed to induce maximum trauma.

-And we end on this lovely portrait, which I feel compelled to include thanks to the sheer atmospheric energy. We’ve gotten quite a few instances of Wolfwood’s POV in this volume, but here you can feel how much of an effect Vash has on him…
