"Why'd you shoot?!"

Mercy...

"That's not for you to decide."
Tumblr media
"It's better than killing him and taking away his chance to stop!"

"Your hypocrisy is showing."
Tumblr media
"You talk of saving everyone, but you don't wanna get your own hands dirty."
Tumblr media
"You are the coward here, Wolfwood..."
Really interesting parallels between Stampede episode 5 and Maximum volume 2. Both are the death of one of Knives' assassins at the hand of Wolfwood in order to protect Vash. Stampede Wolfwood takes out a very present threat, while Maximum Wolfwood arguably acts prematurely.
Both times, Vash calls him out and challenges Wolfwood's justification. But in Maximum, Vash bites back after being called a hypocrite whereas in Stampede, he lets Wolfwood have the final word.
It's an important moment in their relationship, and one that's referenced again at an emotional moment in Trimax vol 10.

I wonder if Stampede is gonna break my heart again with this Rollo scene later on. 🥲

So far I have concluded:
New Vash: Pretty baby. Cinnamon roll. Cute. Wholesome. Pretends to be a funny guy but it's pretty obvious he is a sad boi with a lot of trauma.
OG Vash: absolutely unhinged. Creature. Very loooong. Class clown. Either has no more than two braincells to rub together or all the braincells honestly depends on the situation. Probably has issues? Hides them pretty well tho. Still kinda wholesome

So those death flags on Roberto eh... Meryl is definitely using that derringer after he dies, right? It's her signature gun, there's no way she won't...

Vash's relieved face is so soft as he looks at Monev... like he's already realized that it's Rollo and he still has a chance to save him just like he promised 20 years ago.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Side note: which God does Vash believe in? the god that Rollo worships is Knives? maybe? but Vash is probably talking about the christian god?)
Vash is finally there for Rollo, but...he's just too late.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vash's final moments with Rollo are so tender compared with his final moments with Monev in the manga where Monev is literally begging for his life. Vash really looks like he might kill him, but ultimately holds back so as to not hurt Rem's memory.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they're both highly emotional moments, but the payout is so different! I like the direction Stampede took with making Monev a thoroughly sympathetic character instead of just some villain.

OKAY but Stampede may have tossed me one more bone on the pile of things that I’ve always thought/headcanoned/theorized for Vash.
If you haven’t watched episode 5 of Stampede, spoilers follow:
In the episode, Vash is facing off against (who we think is Monev, not sure at this time?) they show flashbacks of this kid that Vash has known since the kid was born, yeah?
And after this kid, Rollo, is taken by the Eye members for a ‘cure’ (coughexperimentationcough) to his sickness, we see him subjected to some pretty awful things, and when he tries to return to his mother, she calls him a monster...
So in the moment that the flashback ends, he’s saying “no, I’m... I am...” And the flashback ends with the monster-Rollo screaming--There wasn’t a subtitle lending to the idea that Rollo was shouting his own name, even though it’s implied by the way the flashback cut back to the present.
NOW. IF--**IF** the monster-Rollo did not shout his name--HOW did Vash know?
For the longest time, with breadcrumbs and some interesting hinted moments in the manga, I have theorized that Vash is empathic/telepathic. Mostly with his brother, but also he can feel the dependent Plants, too. BUT I think it’s possible he is with humans, too. Specially if they’re going with the concept that the Eye’s experiments use Plant energy/technology. It would make sense that he can hear or feel the painful memories that Rollo is experiencing as he fights Vash.
Vash realizes its Rollo, and tries to save him.
I just REALLY like the idea that its deeper than just “the monster screamed ‘Rollo’ and Vash knows its him” kind of deal. Add depth and could set up for some very painful emotional trauma later, too.
