This is a good thing My family and home life. It’s still my favourite place to be. Football in all its gross financial injustices, still remains a truly entertaining, all welcoming spectacle – a break from our realities. I spent a lot of my days obsessed with the beautiful game. My own team Tottenham’s reimagining as a team for the neutral under Ange Postecoglou. I’ve had a serious post-covid hangover about going out; crowds and especially going to concerts. But still this year I managed to catch a few shows. John Cale and Knife Girl at the Helsinki Festival was very special. Elvis Costello at Kulttuuritalo was a great way to spend an evening – I didn’t really want it to end (and this was also a rare date with my partner!) Emma Ruth Rundle, Sorry, Jake Xerxes Fussell were good festival experiences. I’m an eternal optimist with dreams that we can all get along, people can be who they wanna be and somehow humanity pulls together to save the planet. My dream state staves off the dark feelings that are increasingly hard to ignore.
This is a low The Israel demolition of Palestine in response to Hamas atrocities is a key world happening which will resonate for decades to come. British Conservatives and all right wing ideologues who – in collusion with the mainstream media – spend most of their time demonising refugees and the trans community. The public discussion around minorities in Finland is base and inhumane. This right-wing Finnish government has been a hard dose of reality that has sprung many of us out of our comfort zones. The casual racism of the Finnish government has normalised terminology that should offend everyone. Disgraceful. The lack of a moral compass or compassion in world politics – who exactly are the good guys? I hope someone could point out who’s looking out for us all nowadays? Elon Musk and the destabilising of Twitter. He just couldn’t leave it alone could he? The unstoppable rise of AI. It’s a slow process (or maybe a fast one) that results in the death of a certain kind of creativity. Hearing that some people in the Music business are using AI to write press releases is a little sad. The Saudi exploitation of football. It doesn’t stop. How long till the whole of football is owned by Saudi Arabia? The Vinyl market becoming an expensive artefact for the wealthy. In typical Music Industry fashion, the vinyl format becomes revitalised only for the music industry to make the price prohibitive for most people. Own goals are rarely clearer.
Future To be a better me.
Happy holidays x

OQM Playlist: Life during quarantine #29
Nick Triani returns with his Life during quarantine playlist and reflects on his highlights of 2021 so far.
I honestly thought I was done with quarantine playlists. But here I am a year later, positioning tracks in the right order, for a free flowing listening experience and for maximum impact. The vaccine roll-out seems ultra slow as EU bureaucracy creates a sense of unease throughout the union. Right-wing conspiracists take cheap shots.Time stretches inconceivably as the lack of human interaction outside of one’s immediate family and our computer screens remains a fading memory.
For me culture has kept the fires burning. Some personal highlights from 2021 so far:
-Adam Curtis’ revealing and thought provoking documentary about how we got here, Can’t Get You Out of My Head
-A timely reminder of how things can get out of control with MAUS by Art Spiegelman
-Elvis Costello’s entertaining Unfaithful Music and Disappearing Ink
-The general art-house pretentiousness of Zack Snyder’s Justice League (Yes, it was a mess and yes it was strangely moving and really essential all at the same time)
-Catching up with my discography gaps of Judy Collins‘ astonishing 1970s back catalog
-Discovering Jorge Ben’s remarkable A Tábua de Esmeralda album
-Litku Klemetti cementing her reputation as the only interesting presence within the Finnish music mainstream in 2021
-Joni Mitchell’s Wild Things Run Fast
Until next time.

Do you even lift, Bro Una?
Una carrying members of the crew, becasue thats a thing now.
Una looked at captain pike with her eyebrow raised. “Captain, what did the ambassador just say?”
The captain had the decency to look chagrined. He cleared his throat. “Well…ambassador Talia said that as enterprises matriarch, it is ceremonial to carry me…um…your husband around the Mother Tree to demonstrate your strength, determination and selflessness. Thus concluded, we can begin negotiations for them to join Starfleet.
Una just stared at him unamused for a moment longer, making the captain squirm slightly under her piercing gaze. Then she turned to ambassador talia with a smile and gave a small bow. “Of course, ambassador.”
With that, she quickly scooped the captain up bridal style, held him easily in her arms and began to circle the giant tree while the rest of the Triani delegation followed, all holding hands.
“Chris,” una said somewhat exacerbated. “How does this keep happening?”
“What?” the captain asked with faux innocence. He draped his arms loosely around his number ones neck and beamed. He looked entirely too comfortable being carried like this.
Una rolled her eyes. “You know exactly what I mean.”
The captain just smiled up at her and kicked his feet a little bit. “What? I cant help it if everyone thinks we are married.”
Una scoffed. “Of course, you can. You really need to stop letting this happen.” She looked down at him with an eyebrow arched. “Remember the lecture la’an gave you after the mix up on Tsalia IV where they thought you and the entire away team were married?”
The captain grimaced. “Oof. Yeah, that was bad,” he agreed. La’ans lecture on potential security risks due to the captains egregious and overly effusive affection for the crew which led to a gross misunderstanding and required them to enact several DAYS worth of a fake married situation, still made him shudder.
“Yes,” una agreed. “And on Zelon III where they thought you and spock were married?” The captain tilted his head acknowledging unas words.
“Or Yshlyn prime, Pheora X and Lusitianan one where they ALL thought WE were married.”
“There is that,” the captain agreed lightly.
“Or my favorite, Cathlos II where we had to watch you and ortegas try not to bicker us all to death because they thought you were married.”
The captain groaned at the memory. He gave out a low chuckle. “That was…memorable.” He agreed. Then he snuggled further into una as she held him tightly. “I think my favorite was Moop’sey Mons where you and I were married and somehow la’an and spock were our kids.” The captain grinned.
Una snorted then rolled her eyes. But she didn’t argue. Because…it had felt right calling la’an her family. And it had been adorable watching la’an and spock squabble like true siblings.
“My point is,” una said severely. “This needs to stop happening.”
The captain just shrugged. “I will do my best,” he promised as una finished the walk around the tree and gently set him back down. She smiled softly as she steadied him a moment. She knew he would try. But she also knew chris. This would keep happening.

FEATURE: Flipping through the journey of UPIS Pep Squad Batch ‘24
Walking down memory lane with the UPIS Pep Squad '24, we reflect on a journey filled with dedication, spirit, and hard work. From joining the team and facing challenges to now saying farewells as they graduate with the brightest smiles, these seniors have left a permanent mark on our school's history, symbolizing the true essence of teamwork and perseverance.
Imparting reflections and words of advice are three seniors—Cheska Yanga, dancer; Vince Lagunilla, head drummer; and Triani Reyes, drummer—and their coach, Ey Calso.
Joining any varsity team is a decision driven by a passion for a certain sport and a desire to take on challenges. For Yanga, their journey began unexpectedly.
"I joined because I was interested in what they do and wanted to try something new," said Yanga. Transitioning from the swimming team to the pep squad as a Grade 7 student, Yanga was encouraged to try out and join the team by her batchmates, unaware that it would lead her to staying as a pep squad dancer until the end of her high school years.
Others were captivated by the performances of the senior members of the UPIS Pep Squad back then when they were in elementary.
"I joined because of the strong aura of the team, but mainly the drummers during events. I enjoyed the presence they have during games and the energy they give to the crowd," stated Lagunilla.
The hype around the UPIS Pep Squad never seemed to die down, particularly for Batch 2024.
"I joined because all of my friends couldn't stop talking about it and I got curious. Since I didn't have anything else to do at home, I tried it and ended up loving it," said Reyes.
This mix of curiosity, inspiration, and passion has created a unique bond among the Pep '24 members, shaping their high school experience in unforgettable ways.
Every sport has its own challenges to overcome. Yanga shared that one of the hurdles they faced during their time on the team was time management.
"There was a time where I had a lot of extracurricular activities that it became so difficult to juggle all of it all at once," Yanga said. Eventually, she managed to overcome it by organizing and planning her tasks in advance.
Another significant challenge was the emotional impact of the isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. "When the pandemic came, all of my problems came together, and I was forced to stop training because I was losing interest and time for the things I love,” shared Reyes.
Reyes had to pause and take a rest, gradually increasing her training days over time. This process reminded her of the main reason she loved being part of the pep squad, which helped her overcome her sadness.
For others, the challenge was a lack of skills when they first joined the team.
"Being a cheerleader has a very high demand for skills. As a new member, I was weak and scrawny, but with the help of hard work, physical conditioning, teamwork, and listening to the coach, I greatly improved my performance," said Lagunilla.
These individual challenges were nothing to these incredible athletes as they moved forward with determination to overcome all of them. Over the years, they evolved, learning valuable life lessons that extended far beyond the cheerleading mat. They discovered the importance of doing things wholeheartedly and enjoying every moment with their teammates.
"Throughout the years that I have stayed with the team, I have learned a lot of different things. Being on a team surrounded by the right people is a must for a varsity team. This can not only help an individual grow but also you as a team. I learned to do things wholeheartedly and enjoy every moment I have with them, no matter what. Being on the team hopefully made me a better ‘ate’ to them," said Yanga.
"[Being a part of the pep squad] reminds me that I'm never alone, and whenever life gets tough, the people in the pep squad are always here to cheer me up, support me, and provide a shoulder to lean on when I can't pick myself up. The pep squad taught me to love and cherish every moment and to always have a smile on my face, which I believe has contributed to my personal growth into the person I am now," said Reyes.
On the same topic, Lagunilla, head drummer also shared, "Personally, I believe it changed me for the better. Physically, I am a lot stronger and more suited for physical activities compared to back then. However, in the non-physical aspects of my growth, I feel more comfortable, confident, and respected."
Coach Ey Calso, reflecting on the journey of Pep '24, expressed pride in the growth and achievements of the seniors.
"Every single day that I had the chance to be with my Batch ‘24 pep babies was a rewarding experience for me as a coach. All the members of the team, especially our seniors, have always been really passionate, disciplined, and skilled in everything they do in our training sessions," shared the coach.
He also shared that, in addition to honing their craft and consistently showing progress as drummers and dancers in the pep squad, the seniors always guided their teammates, particularly the younger ones, to ensure everyone learned and made the most of training sessions.
Mx. Calso also highlighted the exemplary work output of these athletes, stating, "Their work output was done excellently and really well thought-out. Any task given to them was seamlessly delivered and performed.”
As Pep Squad '24 prepares to graduate, Mx. Calso shares one final message of gratitude: "It's really heartbreaking to let them go. It's like letting your kids experience the world and finally be independent, then falling and standing back up on their own. I am very confident that they can take on the world with so much pride and love in their hearts. I can't wait to see them ace all the challenges and trials that college has to offer. I am proud that I was able to be part of their high school lives. The team will surely miss them, but the lessons and experiences that we got from them will surely continue on to the next generations of the UPIS Pep Squad."
Some heartfelt farewells and good luck messages from Yanga, Reyes, and Lagunilla of the UPIS Pep Squad '24 echo sentiments of gratitude and hope for the team's future.
"As we graduate, I hope we can continue to support and guide them in their journeys ahead. The bonds and memories we've created will always hold a special place in my heart," Yanga expressed.
"I encourage you all to cherish every moment together and to learn to love and appreciate each other, despite any challenges we may face,” shared Reyes.
In addition to thanking their team, Reyes also shared a few words about their coach's hard work, saying, “Thank you for staying this long and giving us the moment/exposure we all deserve. I hope you continue supporting and being here with the team. I will always be grateful for the amount of hard work you do for us even if you don't benefit as much as you should.”
"To my fellow members of the UPIS Pep Squad, I wish you all the best of luck on your journey. I hope I've been able to impart some valuable lessons during my time as head drummer. Remember to enjoy yourselves while respecting your coach. Thank you all for the wonderful memories," added Lagunilla, head drummer of UPIS Pep Squad.
As Batch ‘24 of UPIS Pep Squad closes this chapter of their lives, they prove themselves being able to overcome hard challenges that come their way.
These athletes demonstrated dedication and resilience, leaving a lasting impact on each of their performances as well as the team.
One last “UP FIGHT!” for the UPIS Batch ‘24 who cheered and put smiles on our faces!

OQM Playlist: Life during quarantine #23 A new Life during quarantine playlist finds Nick Triani writing about the legacy and influence of Jimi Hendrix.A new Life during quarantine playlist finds Nick Triani writing about the legacy and influence of Jimi Hendrix.
Jimi Jimi Random thoughts. On Friday I woke up after dreaming of Jimi Hendrix, specifically a Hendrix movie. I realised I had the same feeling watching John Ridley‘s weak Jimi Henrdix biopic All Is by My Side as I did watching Oliver Stone‘s ludicrous yet entertaining The Doors movie. Both films managed to miss the essence of what made the two Jims, Hendrix and Morrison, so interesting. What a dream!
Any fascination in watching these movies comes from following the ensuing cinema car-crash unfold. At least Stone was brazenly over the top with obvious fake beards, shamanistic ideology and appropriation, off-kilter period detail and dollops of unnecessary nudity. Ridley’s film is way too dour and without being able to use any of Hendrix’s recorded music, ultimately misses the core of the attraction.
Of course, Hendrix’s standing is very strange in this post-modern era. Yes, it’s acknowledged he was the greatest rock guitarist ever, but much of the druggy, free-love ideology of Hendrix’s time seems woefully out of sync with 2020, therefore diminishing his influence. Allegations of domestic abuse haven’t helped the Hendrix mythology either, yet similar white artists accused of the same or worse seem to be unscathed by such history (Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Bowie, Lennon etc). Even Hendrix’s Fender Strat guitar tone seems to be out of vogue.
And that’s the thing to remember, outside of Arthur Lee, Hendrix was the sole black rock icon of the 1960’s boom. Stories about his extraordinary large hands, troubled family background, breaking into the London live scene, that onstage showdown with The Who, the hour-long anguish of noise he performed live the night of Martin Luther King‘s murder, being the highest paid live performer of the late 1960s, Hendrix standing as one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, seem to be an afterthought. Then there’s the records.
‘Driving South,’ a BBC session cut found on this week’s playlist should remind us that the gentle yet troubled soul of Henrdix could diminish the guitar opposition even with an off- the-cuff jam. Further out of context, Hendrix’s excellence opened up the premise of Black music to a white rock audience. You could surmise that Hendrix wasn’t the greatest songwriter, but again, that is a slur, there are many examples of great songwriting in his catalog. But his core musicality and main influence were the blues; the riff, the expression and that singular sadness. Hendrix remains the unquestioned and unrivalled king of making noise with an electric guitar, his expression still far ahead of the game.
