Explaining the chorus of dragons sounds like trying to explain a desi person’s family tree. It’s large, extensive, and everything is so intertwined that if you don’t know one thing, you can’t understand most other things.

Well I've never tried to explain a desi family tree so I don't know exactly how it compares, but like I haven't even scratched the surface of what's going on. That scene I was talking about isn't even one that moves the plot forward that much it's just a side-note in one of several relationships; it's like 5 pages total (although there is background from outside of that).

Kihrin having drunk sex with his stepmom who's actually his sister-in-law who's actually a person-eating shape-shifting monster is just like a huh I guess that might as well happen. But like there's so many other things happening. The story is being told at 3 different points in time simultaneously and I only know when 2 of them are, and they're all as complicated as that one scene. Half of what everyone says is either unintentionally wrong or they're flat out lying. There are so many words that are used casually that mean nothing to me (like all the countries...so many...).

Like I'm intrigued but also there's some things that just genuinely require a lot of focus and brain power to understand what the author is saying or what's happening and why it matters. Kihrin figured out that thing with the golden hair and the ancestry and I had to sit there for a few minutes and be like...what is he saying about being descended from who and how he knows that? Teraeth explained who his father is and I genuinely had to reread the paragraph about 5 times and I'm still not sure what I read. And then that thing with Doc and Ter-what's his name and the illusion, I'm still not sure what the fuck that was about like I just genuinely don't know what just happened. I read it but like I didn't get it and I'm gonna have to think about it.

I'm making a fuss about it being complicated and complaining but I do appreciate it; I've read so many predictable books and iterations of similar patterns, and while I do enjoy those books I like being caught off guard and having to think, not having the story handed to me. Nice change of pace to be so wildly confused about everything and not know everything's that's happening a hundred pages before it does :)

This will be very rambling, so I apologize but I’m Normal about this and the work they’re from.

They’re characters from a personal project, writing and working with a fake set of folklore beliefs and mythology and how it changes over time and location to serve different needs. They’re both blank slates used in a myth and actual characters with personalities and stories, as best suits me in the moment. It’s pure indulgence.

Their myth answers several questions about sociocultural values, reflecting very specific political changes going on at the time. Challenging some taboos while reaffirming other, more traditional beliefs in Markish culture.

It also explains the structure of the underworld and dead realms, the way gods (or at least two specific gods) interact with one another and how mortals are expected to interact with them in turn. (How does a prayer to the god of death work and what do you pray for? How is it heard and what does it mean for it to be answered?)

What does marriage, and the roles associated with it, look like? What are the expectations from each party and how is it changing? What remains the same?

An abridged version of the “original” myth is:

Kishrai, the deity of death, and the deity of love, Mae, are having an argument. There are several places a departed soul can go after death, including a place for those favored by the gods. Kishrai often has to be convinced by the gods that their champions deserve this final resting place of honor, and Kishrai often overlooks, if not outright ignores, Mae’s champions, arguing that love and marriage aren’t really all that unique, or worthy of having “Champions” represent them.

At the same time, Triay is a woman about to be sold into sexual slavery to pay off her father’s gambling debt. She’s going to be married off and will become the property of the man her father owes money to, who in turn will make her work in a brothel.

While she’s waiting for the wedding ceremony to begin, Triay escapes and is chased down with her fiancé threatening to kill her. It isn’t until she reaches the outskirts of town that she either twists or breaks her ankle and has to limp to the only building she can still reach and hope to hide in: Kishrai’s temple.

The priestesses of the temple allow her in, hiding her in their chambers. While there, a desperate Triay prays to Kishrai that she would rather die and become his bride than marry her actual fiancé.

This prayer is overheard by Mae and Kishrai, and Mae offers a wager. If this mortal woman goes through with her offer and agrees to marry Kishrai after she dies, then Kishrai will have to allow Mae to elect their champions. If the woman refuses, then Mae will drop the issue and stop putting up lovers for consideration. Mae cannot cause the woman to fall in love, Kishrai cannot unduly terrify her.

Back with Triay, she is found by her fiancé and murdered in the temple. (A different myth discusses how taking a life in their temple is the ultimate transgression against Kishrai, and what the punishment for that is.)

When Triay awakens after dying, she’s informed that Kishrai has heard her prayer and is willing to consider her offer if she was serious. Mae successfully argues that Triay be given time to consider her options. After “some time” Triay comes to the logical conclusion that being the wife to a corpse is much more preferable to being a formless, thoughtless spirit.

She agrees to marry Kishrai, Kishrai loses the bet, and Mae is allowed to elect lovers as Champions in the afterlife.

Subsequent tellings of the myth expand more on Triay, giving her a personality and thoughts. They also humanize Kishrai more, and see the two begin to fall in love after they’re married, but the original is meant to highlight some very important social shifts occurring in the fictional kingdom of Markhin.

King Lorkhan had been aggressively expanding women’s rights as he planned to name his more competent eldest daughter as heir to the throne rather than his layabout eldest son. Women were given more legal rights as well as more power and control over their own lives, being allowed to inherit and own property, run businesses, and decline marriage proposals.

To the intended audience of the original telling, Triay being sold into marriage to pay her fathers debt off would have been a known phenomenon, although not a common one and one regarded as “a bit old fashioned”. Triay not having a choice in the matter of who she was made to marry would have been much more familiar and expected, and her having a choice at all to marry Kishrai would have been a sharp divergence from tradition, reflective of some of the cultural changes Lorkhan was attempting to solidify.

Why's mine journey such a perilous quest, eh? I dive into new challenges across the realms of CAS. So much braving those dreadful triaIs (oh, the horrors!!); and venturing into uncharted seas and waters :(, all to level up me skiIls and take on fresh challenges, aye aye! 'Tis Iike a quest in the world of blocks. Absolutely! Cannot disagree! (I assume??) Here, where each obstacle and every new horizon so equivalent to be like XP for the growth, arrr! every step taken be a testament to the depths of me courage; skilIs; and the breadth of me resolve. Why? Amidst the t3mpests and calms alike, I find meself adrift in seas of economic development, where each conquest of the heavens be but a prelude to the next grand adventure. By grace of Poseidon himseIf!?!?! Wherefore? Therefore, as I hoist me sails and chart me course, I say. I leave in me wake a trail of triumphs. What proof of me daring & + willingness to embrace the unknown? Must be like yo ho ho!

Here I have undertaken new challenges and developed new skills. I've personally never drawn tall trees before so this has been a severe and daunting challenge for me. Nevertheless, I've developed a robust skillset revolving around vegetation composition and pixel art drawing, which I can confirm to be of utilitarian superiority.

This has been a significant challenge undertaken on my side and has resulted in the development of new skills in the process. Since exercising at home is of relative novelty, no occasion of such deeds were forseen. Hence, such daring attempts of exploitation should be adequately acknowledged.
