Preventing Altitude Sickness

Situated in the heart of the Himalayas, Nepal is home to some of the world’s most exquisite landscapes, including the Annapurna ranges, and the iconic Mt Everest, standing at 8,848 metres above sea level. The country boasts no shortage of lush valleys, ancient villages, and snow-capped mountains, welcoming over 171,000 trekkers in 2019 (Warwicker, 2023). However, when trekking at high altitudes, it is crucial to be aware of the risk of altitude sickness. This is a condition that can occur as the air thins, especially above 2,500 metres, leading to reduced oxygen levels and can be cause for serious concern. I have listed ways altitude sickness can be avoided so you can explore these beautiful mountain ranges without compromising safety!

Ascend slowly. This is especially important above 10,000 feet. It is recommended to increase altitude by 1,000 feet. This will also allow you to spend more time focused on your journey. Utilise a slower pace to take in the scenery and immerse yourself in the rich culture and landscape this country has to offer

Different people acclimatise at different rates. Make sure all of your party is properly acclimatised before going higher.

If you begin to show symptoms of altitude illness, don't go higher until symptoms decrease, and if they worsen, descend to a lower altitude 

Travel with a local tour guide! This boosts the local economy, provides an opportunity to and talk to a local about their own experiences. They are also experts on the mountains and will be able to offer advice if you become unwell

BANFF, Alberta, Canada 🍁 🇨🇦 Day 1 - snowshoeing with @brianursic! It's wild who we run into when plan random adventures. I intended to explore Banff alone as I make my way to Sacramento to move Dan to New York 💕- I reached out to Brian, a good friend from Vancouver, to see if he's been to the area or had tips in exploring Banff. It turns out, he just moved to Calgary!! Wild- met Brian in Australia 🇦🇺 in 2017, met up with him in Nepal 🇳🇵 for our base camp trek in 2018, hiked Vancouver island 🥾 in 2019, and here we are again 2022 🇨🇦 This was a snowshoe trail in Kaninaskis region. We did about a six mile hike where I met the unfortunate comment of "you wish you could have a sustained Heart Rate of 178 for an hour" while he had no issues with his heart rate staying around 130.... I definitely need to get back my stamina! It takes certain experiences to expose the reality check of our health! An old temple nearby shelter spring and natural gas jets, which provides Muktinath with the famous eternal flame. Jomsom is a modern town with ‘Thakali’ homeland. Thakali are the people of Tibetan origin and have their own language and customs. Sebastian or Seb, please call him Seb, is a Roswell native and grew up causing chaos around Moonbeam Gardens. He was always getting into scrapes. Climbing trees, jumping off rocks into the river (never checking to see if it was safe first), constantly covered in mud, practically a head to toe bruise.

He spent most of his younger years in the local ER and getting picked up by paramedics after he’d done something stupid. His mom was pretty much convinced he’d end up killing himself.

He had a sense of adventure that he would never grow out of.

In addition to that, he was also extremely clever, making money in high school by agreeing to tutor younger students for cash. He didn’t really need to, his parents are loaded, but it was something to do right?

In senior year he was accepted into Princeton University to study various sciences and moved out to New Jersey shortly after his high school graduation to explore the area.

It took only six months for him to realise that perhaps academics weren’t for him.

At the end of freshman year he dropped out, packed a bag and up and left for Australia with a plan to take a gap year, enjoy twelve months or so of travelling.

Twelve months turned into two years.

Two years quickly turned into five, he had no intention of going back home now.

After his year in Australia, he travelled to South Asia, spent over a year trekking through the Himalayas in Nepal and Tibet. That was when he found himself some company, getting as close as love as he could while on the road. They would talk a lot about the possibility of climbing Mt. Everest together one day, but it wasn’t something that was ever to happen.

They went their separate ways again when he travelled on to Thailand.

After that it was Singapore and following a fleeting stop in Fiji, he finally made his way to New Zealand, the final major destination in his time on the road. A year was spent with Hobbits and Elves before he headed home to the US.

He took six months to road trip from the East coast to the West before eventually arriving back in Roswell in September 2020.

Since then he’s been living out of his backpack, a habit he’s unable to break, sleeping on a mattress on the floor of his apartment.

Seb is probably the most chill guy going, he loves on everyone and refuses to argue because he doesn’t have time for it, but he will make his opinions known and can be quite blunt sometimes.

What follows is the exhaustive list of all 403 short- and feature-length films featured on this blog over the last thirty-one days for the 31 Days of Oscar marathon. This number is up from last year’s count of 327 and is the second-highest number of films I have ever featured in this marathon (behind the 410 films from 2016). Despite the number, this remains only a fraction of the nearly 5,000 films that have been nominated for Academy Awards. This year’s marathon was harder to plan than usual due to the fact it was presented in alphabetical order - with the exception of any write-ups I did.

Sebastian or Seb, please call him Seb, is a Silver Lake native and grew up causing chaos around Silverwood Terrace. He was always getting into scrapes. Climbing trees, jumping off rocks into the ocean (never checking to see if it was safe first), constantly covered in mud, practically a head to toe bruise.

He spent most of his younger years in the local ER and getting picked up by paramedics after he’d done something stupid. His mom was pretty much convinced he’d end up killing himself.

He had a sense of adventure that he would never grow out of.

In addition to that, he was also extremely clever, making money in high school by agreeing to tutor younger students for cash. He didn’t really need to, his parents are loaded, but it was something to do right?

In senior year he was accepted into Princeton University to study various sciences and moved out to New Jersey shortly after his high school graduation to explore the area.

It took only six months for him to realise that perhaps academics weren’t for him.

At the end of freshman year he dropped out, packed a bag and up and left for Australia with a plan to take a gap year, enjoy twelve months or so of travelling.

Twelve months turned into two years.

Two years quickly turned into five, he had no intention of going back home now.

After his year in Australia, he travelled to South Asia, spent over a year trekking through the Himalayas in Nepal and Tibet. That was when he found himself some company, getting as close as love as he could while on the road. They would talk a lot about the possibility of climbing Mt. Everest together one day, but it wasn’t something that was ever to happen.

They went their separate ways again when he travelled on to Thailand.

After that it was Singapore and following a fleeting stop in Fiji, he finally made his way to New Zealand, the final major destination in his time on the road. A year was spent with Hobbits and Elves before he headed home to the US.

He took six months to road trip from the East coast to the West before eventually arriving back in Silver Lake in September 2020.

Since then he’s been living out of his backpack, a habit he’s unable to break, sleeping on a mattress on the floor of his apartment.

Seb is probably the most chill guy going, he loves on everyone and refuses to argue because he doesn’t have time for it, but he will make his opinions known and can be quite blunt.
