I mentioned our #Teebus @ozone.africa ascent in my earlier post below ... this is what it looks like at the top, courtesy of the @gopro #Fusion360 from @goproza #fokkenscary 😬 ---- I'm an #OosKaap boytjie, so the odds were always high I'd enjoy #Trek2Teebus and the #steynsburg region as a whole. I never realized how much, though ... In a way, it was like coming home, I suppose. The Baviaans River Conservancy where I grew up is but a couple of hours away, and I felt like a 56yr old kid let loose within a familiar outdoor playground. Rooigras seeds in your socks, the Lego jumble of ysterklip koppies, the whistle of wild rheebuck on windswept ridge lines, the smell of the fertile red soil ... it all felt comfortably familiar. Although our focus was on the 2nd edition of the @trek2teebus #Karoo #MTB Adventure, the @ozone.africa crew did duck into the mountains a few times. Our first adventure was a lightning fast ascent of the iconic #Teebus copy, followed a couple of days later by a ridgeline #trailrun recce for a potential #Trail2Teebus Stage Run. Keep your ears open for further announcements 😏 It was as always great to have my #oZone tjaaina @zaneschmahl as wingman, and with key adventure brands @isuzusa, @FrontRunnerZA, @spotafrica and @sealandgear on board. It's all about #trust. Loved spending time with @rohangermishuys, @fleurvaneeden, @rudiboth and their superb team. Karoo Kuiers at the Trek2Teebus
If the Build it Trek2Teebus, presented by SEESA, had taken place in KZN it would have been dubbed boutique. But its rural Karoo setting meant that the second edition of the three day stage race could more accurately be described as gesellig. With Oom Charles and the Petrichor Adventures team setting the tone for a social long weekend of campfire kuiers the riding was but a small part of the event.
That is not to say the mountain biking, which was of course the initial hook which brought cyclists across the country to the Steynsburg region of the Great Karoo, was not fantastic. The 72 kilometre long opening day showcased the local hospitality from the off. Just 28 kilometres into the first stage riders were welcomed into water point one, outside the Steynsburg Primary School by hundreds of cheering pupils. The otherwise quiet town was clearly thrilled to have a mountain bike race passing through its dusty streets.
Stage 1, by in large, featured rolling gravel roads and twisting farm jeep tracks; these allowed riders to take in the broad Karoo views. The highlight of the day was the detour past a waterfall. Approaching the river, and the gorge down which the waterfall plummets in the rainy season, the sparse Karoo vegetation became increasingly dense, hiding the spectacular view until the last moment. Riding wise the Moab style slick rock provided an interesting change of surface too, while off the bike a local farmer braaied atop the nearly dry waterfall and graciously doled out lamb tjops.
The event’s second stage was the singletrack day. It also included the race’s most significant climb, up the Bulhoek Pass. Once a completely tarred road the pass has fallen into disrepair from disuse, now mountain bikers have to pick their way between potholes to make their way from the plateau far below to the summit. At the top a view point offered breath-taking vistas over the Great Karoo plains and conical koppies. The downhill which followed provided similar views, for those who took it slowly enough to look up and out at the scenery. For those chasing the trills of an exhilarating descent, meanwhile, the rocky terrain required absolute focus.
The final day of the Build it Trek2Teebus, presented by SEESA, provided the longest stage of the race; at 80 kilometres long. That distance was largely made up by smooth gravel roads though, so fast bunch riding was the order of the day. Aside from the views across the Karoo plains the day’s highlight was the stop at the Orange-Fish Tunnel control room. The tunnel is responsible for making agriculture possible on a commercial scale in the region as it provides water from the mighty Orange River and the Gariep Dam into the Fish River.
Both during and after each stage the superb Karoo hospitality defined the event. Hearty traditional meals kept the riders satiated while the option to book for non-riders meant the Trek2Teebus was a family affair throughout. Children and non-riding spouses were welcomed as warmly as the mountain bikers themselves and everyone was encouraged to slow down and take in the relaxed pace of the country life.
For riders who missed the second edition of the Build it Trek2Teebus, presented by SEESA, the sensible approach would be to bookmark the 2020 dates now. The third edition is scheduled for the 1st to the 3rd of May next year. For more information on the race visit www.trek2teebus.co.za and follow Trek2Teebus on Facebook or @trek2teebus on Instagram to stay updated on the latest news.

Bloubospunt. Plaatfontein. Bulhoek. Koffiebus. Diknek ... The corner of the #Karoo where the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Free State cosy up to each other is a far-flung and oft-forgotten piece of #southafrica. It is wasteland and heartland in stasis, with a rich history inexorably being eroded by urbanization, rural neglect and rural economic collapse. A ghost town - with an Olympic-sized swimming pool - decays in the shadow of #Teebus Peak; Paul Kruger's old house lies locked and forgotten off the R53; the tar road up #BullhoekPass is overgrown and unused; Steynsburg has the post-apocalyptic feel of a town from the pages of a #DeonMeyer novel ... And yet, the area brims with such richness and diversity. Characters - like Oom Charles on the farm where we are staying - are larger than life, and country hospitality overwhelms you around every corner. And if you decide to ride #Trek2Teebus, the route and landscape promises to truly blow your mind. We've just finished shooting #Day1 of this #CountryCrank on remote tracks and farm roads tripping beyond #Teebus & #Koffiebus kopjes looming up from the savanna grassland, and the field of riders are in their element as they weave amidst #nguni cattle, or meander through endless fields of mauve irises. This is #mtb heaven, and you need to ride here to understand the attraction of this wonderful space. Thanks for having us here, @petrichoradventures and @trek2teebus - what an incredible blast it has been so far 🙏 This event is sure to keep growing from year to year 🙌🏻 #karooPanoramaRoute travel #petrichoradventures #Trek2Teebus #Teebus #mtb #mountainbike #BornToRoam #frontrunnerza #IsuzuSA #WithYouForTheLongRun (at Steynsburg) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bwu1SvMJ2xV/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=svlzhdp5oxk0

Somewhere on a road near #Teebus, the #noordkaap nights are calling 👌 . . Can we all agree that #2020 has been a pretty kak year so far, and that we can't wait to do a #roadtrip through #southafrica when it is all finally over!? The way to kick-start #localtravel will be to #playlocal and #staylocal, and I for one cannot wait to hit those heartland roads in the trusty @isuzusa #isuzuMUX 🏕️ . . The @ozone.africa crew has - like all other sport and outdoor agencies out there - lost nearly 100% of their events and projects this year. This #MovingImage was shot last year at @petrichoradventures @trek2teebus stage race, and it sucks that we had to lose this unique shoot (and at least 25x other shoots). But you know what? You cannot keep #adventure - or good people - down! The first projects are happening soon, and before you know it, we'll be back under those starry skies of @northerncapetourism 🌟 🌟 . . #IsuzuSa #WithYouForTheLongRun #NorthernCape #TheresWorkToDo #Trek2Teebus #SpotAfrica #GetLostStayFound #frontrunnerza #BornToRoam #oZoneAfrica #AndBreathe (at Teebus, Northern Cape, South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBQBRK7pC9X/?igshid=1q2j40iy2euh9

Just when you think you've seen it all from this year's @trek2teebus 3-day #mtb experience 😏 Here's a sneak peek at one of the #trailrun routes we scouted as part of a sneaky recce for next year's #Trail2Teebus Stage Run. That's @zaneschmahl - with a @gopro #Fusion360 - and @fleurvaneeden chasing #DieOom across some gnarly #Karoo mountain terrain close to #steynsburg. Run the Broad Karoo
Run the Broad Karoo - Petrichor Adventures have added a trail run to their Trek2Teebus, dubbed Trail2Teebus, it will take place from the 1st to the 3rd of May
For 2020 Petrichor Adventures have added a trail run to their Trek2Teebus, presented by SEESA, mountain bike event. Dubbed Trail2Teebus, it will take place from the 1st to the 3rd of May.  The three-day trail running stage race offers various route options through the Karoo koppies of the Steynsburg region, of the Eastern Cape.

Experience the Broad Karoo During Trek2Teebus Stage Race
Search and discover “meaning [in] the broad Karoo, the bush, the dusty loam” during the TyrePlus-Tygervalley Trek2Teebus in April 2019. The three day stage race, dubbed a Karoo Adventure takes place from the 26th to the 28th of April between the “kopje-crest[s] that break the veldt around” Steynsburg.
On the bike Trek2Teebus provides a total of 210 kilometres of racing across three 72, 55 and 80 kilometre long stages; and takes in 2 100 meters of climbing in the process. The routes traverse the broad grassy planes, ascend the hillocks and trace the cordons of dense greenery which track the watercourses, all of which provide the region with its distinctive scenery. With gravel roads and jeep tracks making up the majority of the distance the riding is largely non-technical, though some rocky sections do provide thrills for those with the skills to take on the challenges at speed.
Route highlights include the ascent over the infamous Bulhoek Pass and a descent below the Karoo’s red soils into the Orange-Fish Tunnel. The Bulhoek Pass may be just 4 kilometres in length, but it rises 500 meters in elevation during over that short distance. Its summit will mark the King and Queen of the Mountain for the Trek2Teebus. While for South African history aficionados the pass is made even more memorable as it leads riders across the farm on which Oom Paul Kruger was born. The best and most unique aspect of the event is left for last: a ride into the Orange-Fish Tunnel. Each rider will have the chance to descend to the control room for the 82 kilometre long underground aqueduct – which transports 22 cubic metres of water per second from the Gariep Dam to the Great Fish River.
Off the bike Petrichor Adventures’ superb organisation and the world famous Karoo hospitality combine to perfection. Luxury tented accommodation options and the ability to book for a non-riding partner to accompany riders illustrates the race organisers’ commitment to making Trek2Teebus a pleasurable experience all round. As for the food… riders, and their accompanying friends and family members, can expect traditional hearty and home-made Karoo cuisine. Karoo lamb – as one would expect – is the cornerstone of the dinner menus.
The race village for Trek2Teebus is located 12 kilometres west of the small Eastern Cape town of Steynsburg. Situated on the Harmonie Farm it provides the ideal location from which to explore the rural Karoo surroundings. It is an area well-off the usual tourist route and a great deal of the charm is provided by the honest country life – where visitors are greeted with the familiar hospitality of returning friends.
Thanks to the Enduroplanet in Bloemfontein, the official bike shop of the TyrePlus-Tygervalley Trek2Teebus, riders will also be able to book their bikes in for full services during the event. That is not all however; entrants to the race will receive a 15% discount voucher – eligible from the date of entry to the 28th of April 2019 – to spend at the Enduroplanet bike shop in Bloemfontein or online at www.enduroplanet.co.za. Alternatively Enduroplant clients who spend R30 000 or more will receive a free solo entry to the 2019 Trek2Teebus, while those who spend R60 000 or more will receive a free team entry. This provides another added incentive to upgrade one’s bicycle now for the 2019 cycling season.
Entries to the 2019 TyrePlus-Tygervalley Trek2Teebus are open and would-be entrants have the option to take part as solo riders or as part of a two person team. Additional options which can be selected during the online entry process include luxury camping, non-rider camping and meal tickets, meal tickets for children and the option to pitch an additional tent of one’s own for the younger members of the family. All these details and more can be found on the event’s website: www.petrichoradventures.co.za.
