Ana Mendieta
“To question our culture is to question our own existence, our human reality,” the artist Ana Mendieta once said. “This in turn becomes a search, a questioning of who we are and how we will realize ourselves.”
Mendieta's early work as a multidisciplinary artist dealt with themes surrounding violence against women. She often used performance.
In Untitled (Glass on Body Imprints—face)(1972), Mendieta presses her face forcefully against a pane of glass at differing angles. Beyond demonstrating her bodily distress, the distortion of her face across the various images disturbs the work’s function as a portrait. In other words, Mendieta’s photographs of her face do not cohere as representative of herself, thereby disrupting how others view her and draw conclusions about her identity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Untitled (Facial Cosmetic Variations) shows Mendieta manipulating her appearance using make-up and wigs, in some instances lightening her skin and hair to call into question her racialization in the US.
In the Silueta series (1973–80), Mendieta staged performances where she laid down in natural landscapes or covered her body in organic materials and then documented the resulting imprints or silhouettes. Untitled (1978) shows a dark indentation made in a sandy landscape covered in scrub, the outline of her body suggesting its absence. These performances recall Mendieta’s experience as an exile who was separated from her homeland at a young age. In her Silueta performances she marked the land, leaving the trace of her absent body. This trace perhaps serves as a metaphor for her absence from her birthplace; she was unable to return to Cuba until the 1980s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Working in Iowa and Mexico, she carved and shaped her figure into the earth, with arms overhead to represent the merger of earth and sky; floating in water to symbolize the minimal space between land and sea; or with arms raised and legs together to signify a wandering soul. These bodily traces were fashioned from a variety of materials, including flowers, tree branches, moss, gunpowder, and fire, occasionally combined with animals’ hearts or handprints that she branded directly into the ground".

Headcanons: The Magic Knight Captains & Their Art Styles
Just some random idea that came to me today while reminiscing on what the Captains do in their free time. I began to picture how it would play out if each of them were instructed to show us their art skills! Here's what I came up with.
Captain William Vangeance:
This man is not too bad at art! He doesn't put a lot of pressure on himself to make perfect sketches and he has low expectations for himself... So he mainly considers it a hobby set aside for his rare moments of leisure time. Since he's so chill about it, his sketches come out looking nice when he's more relaxed. This is usually the case since he prefers using his bird journal - he likes to bird-watch and put together little drawings of the winged friends he sees while laying all content out in his garden. He's no prodigy but his hand-eye coordination is pretty good and after years of practice his birds and trees turn out pretty impressive. Very embarrassed if asked to show people though.
Tumblr media
Credit: Found in a "how to draw" guide.. no name
Captain Nozel Silva:
He prefers appreciating sophisticated art made by others.. and really doesn't care much for making it himself. If he draws anything, it'll usually be rushed - as he knows he's got more important matters to focus on.. Still, he is capable of putting together a sketch every now and again of something simple. Usually plain posable objects. At the end of the day, he's not really a big art freak and even at a nice art museum he gets bored after an hour or so.
Tumblr media
Credit: unlisted. Message if you know where it's from!
Captain Fuegoleon Vermillion:
He likes art, a lot! Like William he's no prodigy, but it makes him happy so that's enough for him. He prefers to paint, and his subjects are often women, focusing on anatomy because he enjoys exploring movement / dimension through bodily posing. He likes painting silhouettes that are dancing and often have flowing clothing, or hair. Definitely focuses on the beauty, passion, and artistic self expression side of it. He isn't as open about it because Mereoleonna poked fun at him for it so much and he'd rather not deal with any of that again.. but people who know about it always talk about how he's quite talented.
Tumblr media
Credit: Anastassia Orehova
Captain Yami Sukehiro:
He's listed in the manga's assorted questions brigade as the #2 ( Behind Rill) judge of artistic style and taste! He's got an excellent eye for art, and he can be really creative medium wise, but I still feel like he's a bit too lazy to sit down for a long time and really commit to a canvas or sketchbook. He doesn't find it rewarding enough for his attention span.. but he seems to be pretty good at making simplistic, cartoon styles really expressive.
Tumblr media
Credit: Olga Shvartsur
Captain Rill Boismortier:
He is ALL about color, vibrancy, and bold presentation! His paintings are always so full of vivid life and brightness, it's clear to see he's a person carrying a wondrous imagination and endless creativity. Everything he's made seems like it's bursting with optimism and excitement, as if the artist couldn't contain himself. He is extremely versatile and can tackle almost any subject, which is super impressive for his age. His one flaw I'd say is that sometimes his paintings, despite being gorgeous technicality wise, can get a little busy or cluttered as he struggles to not get carried away with all the different expressive ideas he comes up with. He's still learning!! ( Bonus headcanon: Rill has a mandatory weekly art class set aside as "training" for the Aqua Deer magic knights.. Everyone attends regardless of their actual interest levels because nobody wants to handle seeing Rill devastated that people didn't show.)
Tumblr media
Credit: Svenja Jodicke
Captain Dorothy Unsworth:
Pretty self explanatory? She's a kawaii sailor moon theme anime waifu. All her drawings are magical anime girls... But they only appear in her dreams, so nobody knows she can draw well!!
Tumblr media
Credit: source link to deviantart page was a removed account 😭 please lmk if you know the artist
Captain Jack the Ripper:
Nobody wants to talk about Jack's art. He doesn't wanna draw and nobody wants him to draw. Anything he makes is simply a cursed image, no questions asked. He's got the artistic skills of a grade schooler... And even though he can be somewhat creative, the fact that there's always some kind of disturbing / violent undertone incorporated within the picture... It just looks like a demented child's drawing.
Tumblr media
Credit: could not find name but it's a canvas displayed in "The Museum of Bad Artwork" labelled as "The Butcher" and tbh that makes it even more terrifying
Captain Charlotte Roselei
She's listed in the top three WORST artists / judges of fine arts in canon... Which is interesting to me, lol. I think she probably stopped trying a long time ago after being teased for how her stuff turns out, lol. She tried drawing or painting and would get frustrated with her inability to create an image she's picturing in her mind.
Tumblr media
Credit: could not find name but it's a canvas displayed in "The Museum of Bad Artwork"
Captain Kaiser Granvorka:
I don't know a whole lot about him tbh but I know he is also listed as an excellent artist next to Yami. I think he'd be really into sophisticated art! Kinda like Nozel but far more dedicated and passionate about it. Still-picture images, but he finds a lot of joy in shapes and objects, and messing around with shading.
Tumblr media
Credit: unlisted. Message if you know where it's from!
And that is all my friends!! I am still trying to hunt down some art credit for these images, some were on Pinterest or just unlisted altogether. I'm gonna put them down once I come back and edit this post when it's not 3am 😂 plz let me know if y'all can help me out with that. I know there's an online site somewhere that's made for this but I forgot what it's called???
This was a lot of fun to make though. If you disagree or have thoughts, feel free to reblog or come chat in my ask box! Goodnight luvs 🥰

Spring Meadow
It feels like it's been ages since I've done a more scenic and spontaneous watercolor piece. And I suppose in some ways it has been, given the last watercolor pieces like this I did made were back in September, and then Inktober happened. Although funny I should mention Inktober, because this painting happens to be for a different kind of monthly challenge. Over on Instagram, a company called Art Philosophy is currently hosting the latest of their monthly challenges, this month's theme being "landscapes." Fortunately for me and my slow-painting self, their challenges are one prompt for every few days, instead of being one prompt every single day. The prompt for the 9th through the 12th is "Spring Meadow." Since my watercolor expertise only goes so far, I had to look around online for quite a while for inspiration, and even then I still did four smaller practice paintings before attempting a final one. Three out of four felt like hot messes to me once they were done, so I stuck to my guns as far as ideas went and tried to replicate the one that wasn't a hot mess for the final. From the beginning, even though the final image wasn't totally clear, I did have a general idea of what I wanted from a "spring meadow." Bright green rolling hills dotted with brightly colored flowers, classic blue sky. Maybe some mountains or trees on the horizon. My smaller experiments did teach me a few things; For one, I needed to do the ground/sprawling meadow part first, then start the sky with a gradient that started darker on the top and then after that dried I could start patchily layering more paint on to imply clouds and texture. And while I waited for the sky to dry, I put in some grass texture with a darker green and a fan brush. Then I added the faint mountains for more visual interest. Admittedly, I should've done the flowers in the grass next, but instead, I did the larger blades of grass that frame the painting along the bottom. Then I did the flowers. Which turned out better than I thought, considering they're just dots/splotches. Although the red looks a lot darker on the scan than it does in person.   After that, it was...fine. Good, even. But...empty. It was missing something. I started by adding in a few far-off birds, but then the balance was off. So I got the wild idea to try adding the silhouette of a plane or jet on the left--without first looking up some kind of reference!   That idea went south fast. I ended up trying to salvage it by making it into a blimp...that looked more like a fish than a blimp...which doesn't even make sense as to why 1. there would be a blimp flying over this meadow and 2. why a blimp would be a dark silhouette...and then I realized the horrible mistake I'd made, and I had to step back from the painting for a little while to figure out how to fix it. Eventually, I decided the best thing to do would be to put some tree leaves/silhouettes in the foreground to try and hide it. And while it may not make logical sense for them to be there and look the way they do, at the very least they did a good job of hiding the plane-blimp-problem. It has its flaws, but as I usually say, I am still pretty happy with how it turned out, given I think there was a little rust on my watercolor gears. The one other issue I had was that the tape I put down on the edges of the paper decided to not want to stick about halfway through the process after I'd taken a break to let the paint dry so everything wouldn't blend together. Because of that, the edges weren't clean in a lot of places and became even more lopsided/crooked/uneven than they already might've been. This is why this is one of few occasions where I've cropped out the white border even though it's present in the final IRL piece; it's irksome to look at the edges.   My goal is to at least try to get something done for the rest of each of this month's prompts, hopefully working off any lingering Inktober momentum, but we'll see. If it becomes too much, I'm not going to beat myself up over having to drop the commitment, y'know? If nothing else, perhaps it'll be an exercise in expanding my watercolors skills. ____ Artwork © me, MysticSparkleWings ____ Where to find me & my artwork: My Website | Commission Info + Prices | Ko-Fi | dA Print Shop | RedBubble |   Twitter | Tumblr | Instagram

Before I began to design some initial book covers, I decided to visit Waterstones to look at book covers that caught my attention. I also wanted to look at what elements adventure/crime book covers use to hint at their contents.
I found that most of the books were displayed using their spines, to save room and allow the book to show more books. I also found that most of the books used a simple design for the spine, with only showing the authors name and book title, or sometimes a small illustration to accompany them. I found this quite boring. However, the books that caught my attention used an illustration or image that spread across the front cover, spine and back cover. When seeing part of the illustration I became curous on what the rest looked like so I picked up the book to examine it more.
I also found that most adventure book covers had dark backgrounds with white or gold writing. Although this works wellI found that most of the books blended together and did not really stand out. The books I was drawn too had vibrant colours with dark writing. The crime book covers were similar too each other. I found that silhouettes and close up images of objects or eyes were common.
The Priory of the orange tree
When I was looking at the seemingly never ending shelves of books, I did not see any covers that immediately caught my eye. However, upon a second look I found the book "The priory of the organge tree."
I was first drawn to the contrasting blue text on the organge background. However, when looking closer at the spine, which was the only part of the book I could see, I realised that there was part of an illustration. I became curious on what it was and decided to pick up the book.
I immediately fell in love with the detailed, menacing dragon perched on the stone tower. I liked how the design has used blue and red foil on parts of the illustration, to make them stand out.
After spending a few minutes admiring the artwork I then became intrigued on how this links to the book. The title does not seem to have any connection to the illustration which makes me more interested in the plot of the book.
The design is create by David Mann. David Mann is a creative director at Bloomsbury publishing. I love how he has combined Ian Belikov's illustration with contrasting type to catch the audience's attention. However, by using the blue in both the text and images they still remain connected and not separate.

How are you using negative space in drawing?
One of the most underrated and important aspects of drawing is negative spaces. These can make you either a professional at art or can leave you wondering about the flaws in your current artwork. Negative space in the drawing is simply the shape of the space around the object, or sometimes just a shade. So, to ensure that your drawing is in equilibrium or balanced, instead of observing the positive shape of an object, begin with negative spaces.
Negative spaces may include any background details or patterns, or a simple silhouette.
Let us look at some points to keep in mind while using the negative spaces in drawing
1. Understand the negative spaces
Usually, artists think of drawing a negative space as outlining the subject, which is not the right way. Outlining is doing a positive drawing as you are focusing on the positive spaces or solid shapes of the object.
Tumblr media
Therefore, it is crucial to understand what positive and negative spaces are in a drawing, to achieve the objective of drawing realistically.
2. Observing the shapes and spaces
Start with observing the shapes or figures forming in between the connecting parts of the object or subject, or with its edges or boundaries.
Through this technique, you will become able to identify and learn to draw the background spaces or shapes forming with the interaction of opposing edges or boundaries of the object. Now, the positive shapes of the object are left un-drawn, and you are left with the actual and correct negative space drawing, which is sort of the reverse of normal positive drawing.
Most of the negative shapes are very easy to observe in any drawing. But, when they are not caught easily, just remember to look for the areas which “don’t belong to the object”.
3. Applying negative space in drawing
Identifying and drawing negative spaces is not an easy skill to develop, but it sure is very essential, especially in terms of true value drawing where you omit the outlining step.
Tumblr media
For example, if you are drawing a picture of a crow sitting on the branch of the tree; Here identifying the negative space is necessary as it contains a texture. Here you need to focus on the crow and the branch on which the crow is sitting. In simple words, positive shapes are the objects and negative shapes are the background of the object.
Also, never lose your sight from the size of the shape and the relationship between these shapes.
But remember, don’t begin with the detailing in your drawing right away. Focus only on the shapes that you see and their relationship with other shapes in the foreground and background. Once you are done with it, proceed towards the shading.
These points help to make the sketches look interesting.
A sound understanding of negative space in the drawing is crucial for every art form, doesn’t matter if you’re sketching or painting. Learn such important drawing components with the help of the best online drawing classes and improve your drawing skills.

Sindiso Khumalo’s S/S19 collection is a nostalgic nod to nature and nurture
Tumblr media
Picture this: it is the 90s. A slight young Zulu girl with skinny legs is riding her bicycle along the landscapes of Botswana, occasionally dismounting to play a quick game of catch with her friends, her face the expression of childlike rapture enjoying the sun, and the warmth and the giggles.
And then later, the same girl is a little older, a little more pensive, taking long, leisurely solo walks, exploring the hills of KwaZulu-Natal, climbing trees, picking flowers, and staring into the clear blue sky, her thoughts and dreams meandering over brown hills and green fields stretching as far as the eye can see …
A folk-inspired collection
Those same colours, textures, and whimsy of Sindiso Khumalo’s childhood find expression in the Spring/Summer 19 collection of her eponymous brand.
Comprising textiles made from either handwoven materials, screen prints on linens or handmade paper cut–outs, later developed into prints, the ladylike collection is an ode to the world of African folktales, and playful printed reincarnations of some of Sindiso’s childhood tales.
“The folk-inspired collection is a marriage of my two loves: craft, and nostalgia,” she says.
The range is now available online, the culmination of a three-year-long labour of love alongside her brother Zamani Khumalo of Mobisynco, who designed the site.
Tumblr media
Combining creativity and logic
The degree in architecture she eventually chose to complete at the University of Cape Town after ditching a degree in engineering, was the obvious natural progression.
It married her creative side with the logic and problem-solving skills that the discipline demands.
The career path took her to London, where she did a two-year apprenticeship under British-Ghanaian architect Sir David Adjaye.
“My intention was to then do my masters in the US, but I went on to do a masters in textile design at Central St Martins, and then worked non-stop as a stylist and fashion assistant at various fashion houses.”
Two important people in her life played significant roles in her decision-making processes. “It was David who made me realise fashion, and not architecture was my calling.”
The second was her father, who died tragically in a car accident in 2002. “I just realised how short life is to not be doing something you love.” Her parents, Gugu and Vivian Khumalo, had always taught her to move towards what you love in life.
Nature-inspired attire
Following on from being selected as a finalist at the 2012 ELLE Rising Star competition, her early collections’ textiles and silhouettes reflected the Bauhaus movement’s strong influence that she has oft credited: a combination of multiple disciplines of art manifesting in linear and geometric forms.
But the ethos behind her clothing making has changed from fashion art to design. “Design is functional. We don’t make clothes that we wouldn’t wear.”
Sindiso and architect Edward McCann, her husband of 17 years, recently relocated back to South Africa. “I wanted to give my children the childhood I experienced – just being close to nature.
Nature and the outdoors are central to Sindiso’s life. The self-confessed addict of nature documentaries, and specifically vintage National Geographic says she draws a lot of inspiration from nature and landscapes.
“I also love watching what my kids do, how they play, make paper cut-outs, and how they refine their artwork.”
Once upon an African future
The playfulness of shape and colour combined with Johannesburg’s modernist architecture found place in the quilts and other textiles she created for the Överallt collection for IKEA.
Launched at Design Indaba 2019, the limited-edition design collaboration featuring 10 African designers including Renée Roussouw, and Maxhosa’s Laduma Ngxokolo, comprises over 30 pieces of furniture, textiles, and homeware.
The past two years have been nothing short of a whirlwind for the trailblazer, Sindiso chats over the phone from London, having just flown from Johannesburg via Durban after showcasing a bespoke range she designed for this year’s Vodacom Durban July.
The theme was Once Upon an African Future, and in collaboration with Vodacom Red, she, Ngxokolo, and Rina Chunga-Kutama of Ri.Ch Factory created five looks inspired by Afrofuturism.
“My family and I work and travel between Cape Town and London.” Though Sindiso’s pattern-cutter is based in London, and the entire year’s collection is designed in London, the factory is in Maitland in Cape Town. “Where there is Wi-Fi, we have an office.
“It’s now school holidays, and we are in the English countryside enjoying the British summer,” she says, as her eldest can be heard jostling for her attention in the background.
“There was something of a kind of real cultural anchoring,” she says of the Durban July.
Obviously, it’s a big horse race, but there was a real celebration of African heritage. I never show in Durban, and it was truly amazing to go back home, and show my family my work. It was epic!”

♡ Preparatory Task

♡ Select an image of an artwork or design in a museum collection that you like.
Tumblr media
Vincent Van Gogh was always an artist I had heard about and seen a couple of times, but only until now when I was looking at the exhibits at the national art gallery online did I find that it caught my eye. A Wheatfield with Cypresses is my favorite work of his, as I love how his emphasis on shape gives an illusion of movement. Despite that this is very clearly a still painting, one of the first things that I notice is that he scene looks windy. Although it’s obvious that you cannot see wind, in this painting, we can see the effect it is having on nature as it passes. What I love most about this piece is how each stroke is curved in some way, following a pattern throughout the piece. Even though there is a lot of emphasis on circular lines, you can still effortlessly point out every different object and plant. They’re still recognizable.
The darkest point on the painting is the tall trees that span more than half of the height of the painting. When I look at this piece, I find that my eyes are always brought back towards the trees. The way they swirl with the shape of the clouds in the background gives the illusion of movement.
Connecting this back with the project though and the ideas that I have, I feel like it’s important of the illustration and concept art that I make will be able to tell a story in itself. Illustrations don’t have to have realistic silhouettes. Especially when I’m working with an idea of a man made, extremely built up scene, I can illustrate the unnatural way streets and corners are laid out. Planned out to perfection. Perfectly organised in rows. Straight lines and pointed corners will make the scene look sharper and somewhat unfriendly looking.
Tumblr media
As part of our preparatory task, we also had to look at a quote that inspired us.
“Would you like an adventure now or shall we have tea first?”
- Lewis Carroll
This is a quote said by the Mad Hatter towards the main character, Alice. During her stumbling into this new world, she comes across the Hatter having tea with the hare and a mouse. She begins to question about why she is there and tries to get some answers from them, but their replies are very vague and don’t usually make much sense. What I love about Carroll’s universe is how everything feels so surreal and weird. The Wonderland that Alice is surrounded by feels almost dreamlike, because of all of the strange goings on such as using a flamingo as a crochet bat, playing cards come to life and a purple cat with a crescent moon smile.
This quote stuck out to me the most, as I like the lack of urgency in the tone of the sentence. The use of the question allows the character Alice to respond and make a decision whether to simply put off an adventure. Hatter’s character is illustrated here as insane and slightly too relaxed. We as the audience are immediately given the impression that due to his personality, he could easily be comfortable and content in a scene of chaos. This level of imaginative character writing from Lewis is so intriguing and interesting to me. How much more interesting is a slightly insane character to read about? Could I create a character with similar mad qualities? Does insanity on a character automatically make them a villain?
By comparing an adventure to something as mundane as having a cup of tea, Carroll is hinting to the reader that there is no rush to get Alice out of the dreamlike wonderland she’s in. This comparison is also very well thought out, as it easily helps an British audience to relate (as Lewis Carroll is an English Writer himself.) Within the narrative itself, Alice is following a white rabbit who is always muttering about being ‘late.’
“I’m late, I’m late! For a very important date! No time to say ‘hello, goodbye,’ I’m late, I’m late, I’m late!”
- Lewis Carroll
Tumblr media
[Source: Disney’s 1951 Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland animated adaptation.]
This is why the earlier quote from the Mad Hatter intrigued me so much. It feels almost frustrating to the viewer that, as the main character is in a rush and time is clearly of the essence, that another character is paying no attention to urgency. This has made me think about the themes of my narrative that I could create. Maybe by making the viewer feel this level of frustration with my themes, but also enjoy the out of the ordinary world building I want to create.
Connecting back to some of our previous work, Carroll’s story could be considered to fall into the category of surrealism. Synonyms of surreal are: dreamlike, bizarre and out of the ordinary, all words that can easily describe the world down the rabbit hole that Alice had fallen into.
Artists part of the surrealism movement in the 18th century wanted to create art that went against all forms of rationalism. Their go was to free humans of the oppressive ordinary things and introduce them to what the irrational, unconscious mind is capable of seeing. Although Carroll was a writer, he was born close to the time of the surrealism movement and may also have seen a part of it. This makes me ask the question if Lewis Carroll was a surrealist himself, writing Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland as an escape for himself and his readers to enter a world different from our own.
The White Rabbit meeting Alice (triggering her adventure) = Encounter
Tumblr media
Overall, this Preparatory Task has significantly helped me to form ideas and come up with new ones. Without this, I feel as though I wouldn’t have the ideas that I do now. I now feel more comfortable with the theme of the brief and definitely feel like I could tie down some ideas and form a narrative with them. But for now I am aiming to keep my mind open to future research, so that I can still allow other aspects of my research to influence my final project, not just Alice in Wonderland.
I’ve always admired Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, so it felt good to analyse it slightly more in-depth. The world building of his wonderland is most definitely something I want to re-visit in future.

The Culture of Alternative Fashion
Tumblr media
(McQueen, Hirst and Sundsbo, 2013)
Through this course we have explored various aspects, and We covered 11 different  topics not only related to fashion history or theories but also related to the process of making and the meaningful and ethical practices comparing it to the examples I would avoid as a future designer like cultural appropriation through  lectures, group activities, open discussions in class, and individual presentations.

7. Where Art & Fashion CollideFile
8. Jameel Art Center
9.  Politics & Fashion
10. The Next Black Film
11.  The Zay Initiative.
I enjoyed all the listed above topics and discussions we had this semester, but certain topics were more engaging and inspiring some of my favorite themes list would be our visit to Jameel art center. My favorite art pieces between exhibited art are the Second-hand Information by Moffat Takadiwa; as this artwork reminded me of Mike Anane’s research and writings as an environmental journalist who has been investigating the effects of electronic waste in Ghana (Gobel, 2014) (Davis et al., 2009). The inspiration resembles to be a paradigm shift of seeing the different aesthetic value in an everyday object and transforming wasted resources into an art piece. Also, Mycelium Running by Zahra Al-Ghamdi. This impressive 3000 pieces of artwork process making are linking traditional primitive craftsmanship to futuristic materials processing. This piece creates an open discussion of a predictive future design realm.

When we started this course, I expected to have a mixture of cultural topics following certain historical flow. However, throughout the consecutive sessions, I personally enjoyed how the course evolved to include more of the topics we like to learn about. Like including future trend forecasting for example in our individual project for history and society. It was a brilliant idea to link fashion history, a current trend to a future prediction. This project gave me the opportunity to learn and inspire from something intangible to design and predict a future trend. Which allowed me to develop a new set of skills as a designer.
The most interesting aspect of this course for me was how each topic and idea were approached and discussed from different angles creating a weaved pattern of heritage, history, politics, fashion industry knowledge, analyzing and forecasting fashion trends.

Richardson (2019). Trend Forecasting. [online] Richardsondesign.com. Available at: https://www.richardsondesign.com/capabilities/trend-forecasting [Accessed 3 Dec. 2019].‌
Building on last year's course of design across scales where we discussed different topics related to different systems (Ecological-Animate-Social -Mechanistic) that simultaneously vary from micro to macro scale through lectures, group activities, open discussions in class, and individual presentations. I felt the same link and inspiration between design across scales course and Fashion culture course as both courses create a creative paradigm for learning design thinking theories, which move across disciplines and scales to highlight that design is not a discipline but a way of perceiving the world. It made me think about how I can develop a new set of skills to be a sustainable fashion designer.

I am eager to integrate some of the learning outcomes of this course in a multidisciplinary approach in future fashion and product studios projects. Especially applying my future trend forecast of a neutral gender fashion trend to one of my fashion studios projects. Because Fashion is an individual process to empower us to express ourselves in an authentic way to feel confident, that we can be anywhere and have an impact. Fashion is like a language for everyone. That's how we are going to take those words and make our narrative.

Another inspiring theme from this course, Alternative Fashion History in Africa were we discussed  how the process of making sustainable garments were applied in Africa from using natural alternative from surrounding environment to color with mud in Mali and make Bark Cloth in Uganda  as we in saw a documentary where they actually extract the bark of trees and cover it to heal. I hope to get the chance to mimic the sustainable process of African fashion from our local environment in one of my future projects. To be a core of further future explorations in my career. Where I aspire to focus on sustainable fashion design, through a zero-waste design approach. Either by using deadstock, or recycles fabrics to create neutral modern silhouettes collections, and upcycle vintage pieces to recreate unique hot couture garments.

His philosophy around the ‘luxury of zero waste’ means his couture, one-of-a-kind, pieces extend beyond fashion into the home with covetable creations such as 18th-century quilts, embroidered cushions, and fantastical sculptured heads.
