20 July 2024: I started this sketch while cars circled the lot in search of an open spot and bugs circled me pleased to have found a stationary source of blood. I got through the pencil and started on ink before the bugs got to be too much. Sketching is an extreme sport.

🌳 sketch. My goal is to become better at sketching. This tree was inspired by the letter ‘Q’. I’m planning to turn this into a series and complete the entire alphabet. After 26 sketches I’m hoping I’ll be less confused about we’re to place my first brushstroke

2023 Week 22: A house wren tries out a backyard birdhouse.

Still reading The Genius of Birds by Jennifer Ackerman. From Chapter Six: “These birds [bowerbirds] often locate their bowers near ‘tips,’ the Australian term for dumps, where they have ready access to all kinds of glinting, colorful stuff. One bower Borgia discovered, built by a spotted bowerbird near the house of a stained glass artist, was filled with little shards of stained glass, which the bird has sorted by color. ‘It was remarkable how he laid out the pieces,’ says Borgia, ‘just like a mosaic.’

“After that spotted bowerbird who collected stained glass died, another spotted bowerbird appropriated his bower. ‘But the newcomer just piled up the shards,’ says Borgia. ‘He didn’t seem to know what to do with them.’”
