Plant of the Day
Saturday 11 January 2025
A large, deciduous tree Castanea sativa (sweet chestnut, Eurasian chestnut, European chestnut, Sardian nut, Spanish chestnut, castanwydden) makes an imposing avenue, forest or specimen tree. With age trees develop a spiral, grooved bark and produce spiny fruits containing edible nuts.

The Avenue at the Jas de Bouffan
Artist: Paul Cézanne  (French, 1839–1906)
Date: c. 1868-1870, possibly later
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: The National Gallery, London, United Kingdom
Description
Alternating strips of light and dark green paint show sunlight playing on the trees late one summer afternoon. The view has been cropped at the top to give the painting an impression of depth, despite its small size.
This avenue of chestnut trees at Cézanne's father's country house was one of the artist's favourite motifs.

Plant of the Day
Wednesday 8 January 2025
At Goodnestone Park, Kent, the estate has relatively recently planted a 500m-long Platanus orientalis (oriental plane, eastern plane, chinar tree) tree avenue, leading from the house to the local village. The lower branches of each tree had recently been pruned to lift the canopy. It was great to see the planting of such a major feature which will only become more impressive with time.
