So I rewatched the entirety of the Baroque Works saga for the first time in quite a few years, and before that I did also finaly watch MelonTeee's video essay about the East Blue Saga. And naturally I am now plagued with some Thoughts™
So in her essay (which you should go and watch if you haven't already, let's be real) MelonTeee discussed how one of East Blue's key themes was people's treasures, be it items, dreams and most importantly other people, and the way people are willing to sacrifice their lives or their own dreams to protect those who are dear to them. Rewatching Baroque Works Saga, the key, long running themes I picked up on were that of
Trust and betrayal (Laboon at the time being under the impression that his friends had betrayed him and left him to rot at Reverse Mountain; Whiskey Peak is all about backstabbing people; Little Garden was about Dorry and Broggy's friendship being too strong for either party to believe the other had betrayed them; Croc's trust issues in Alabasta being his ultimate downfall)
Friendship and unbreakable bonds (Laboon's new bonds with Luffy and co; Dorry and Broggy again; the comparison between Chopper trying to say goodbye to Luffy and co only to be denied vs Vivi's farewell)
What makes a country, a good ruler and if/when is overthrowing a ruler justified (Drum and Alabasta explore these together)
And perhaps most importantly, protecting that what is important to you. And that one in particular I feel like is the Alabasta arc's main theme on its own, as it comes up over and over again.
The Rebel Army wants to protect their country from their "corrupt king" by overthrowing him; the King wants to protect his people from needless bloodshed and tries to avoid combat; Vivi wants to protect her people but also her friends and can't find the strenght to beg them for help lest they get hurt on her behalf; Luffy wants to protect his friends and Vivi so they don't get killed by the likes of Crocodile. Protecting those you love is an important theme in this arc, it is the arc's very heart as the conflict is was born out of that love. And that's why it's so interesting to me how Crocodile's motif seems to be being a protector, a guardian. And I'm not just talking about the "Croc is based on Sobek the Egyptian crocodile headed protector god" and "Guardian of Alabasta"- if that was all then I'm not sure I'd even go as far as to call it a "motif" for him, but it comes back to haunt us again in Marineford with the ever legendary
Tumblr media
And that is just... curious. Because Crocodile as we know him is just Some Asshole with no weaknesses and nothing he cares about except for his own ambition. So being a protector being his motif, of all fucking people, is really interesting. Like, One Piece doesn't really do shallow villians, there's always a reason to why a character has become the way they have and why they're doing what they're doing.
Kaidou was raised in an environment where one justified the reason for their existence through strenght and combat alone.
Doflamingo hates the world and wants it to just fucking burn because he never let go of the entitlement of being a World Noble.
Lucci was brainwashed into becoming a warrior for absolute justice since he was a small child.
Arlong watched his people suffer from the oppression of humans first hand and that hatred consumed his heart.
Wapol was a spoiled nepobaby manchild who thought he should be allowed to do whatever the fuck he wanted because he's King.
Why the fuck is Crocodile the way he is. Why does he want to create a utopia, a military nation powerful enough to rival the WG itself. What has driven him to to strive for that goal. Why is being a protector his motif.
Tumblr media
East Blue explored the things you are willing to do and the lenghts you're willing to go for your "treasure", the ones you love and care about. And Alabasta is about protecting them; even if not called that explicitly, Alabasta is about protecting your treasure. On one hand, having the man with no treasure, nothing and no one he wants to protect, as the primary antagonist of the arc that about protecting your loved ones is a great juxtaposition. Like there is an argument to be made that the reason Crocodile lost is because he had nothing to lose, while everyone else in the arc had everything to lose in this conflict and thus couldn't afford it, as they'd be left with nothing. And, looking at Alabasta on its own, as a standalone arc, that does work. But when you look at One Piece as a whole, when you look at everything that came before and after, I can't help but to feel that can't be the case, can it? Surely Crocodile has something he did want to protect after all?

I just found out that Disney+ made their home page all eras themed categories on the day the tour movie dropped. Not to compliment Disney or anything, but this is so fucking funny.😆
But also be real, Echo would be in Reputation. What the fuck were they thinking putting it in Fearless? Also Robin Hood in Lover? As opposed to Folklore...come on it was right there! (I also think Peter Pan and Wendy would be more appropriate in Folklore...considering there's literally a lyric in Cardigan about them). And 1989 is all just stuff that was released that year!? I'm wheezing right now!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*edit* If I had to pick things that would go in Debut, I think I'd pick a lot of the Pixar movies. All 4 Toy Story movies (but especially TS2). Luca. Up. Inside Out. I'd also put some of the early Disney channel shows like Lizzie Mcguire, That's So Raven, and Hannah Montana, obviously. Though Kim Possible would be in Fearless. It would be funny if they had made it a category and just put shows/movies with names for titles in it 😆

Spoilers for Another Crab's Treasure ahead.
Another Crab's Treasure isn't exactly a character-focused story. It has characters, I like several of them, but the focus is more on theme and tone.
Kril's character arc is, appropriately, simple. It fits the standard "want versus need" template cleanly. Kril wants his old peaceful life (symbolized by the beaten-up shell that's kept him safe all this time), and keeps to that want all the way down to the Unfathom. Down there, he realizes how meaningless his boring life in the tide pool is, and by the time he finally gets his old shell back, he doesn't really want it any more.
Kril realizes he needs to find purpose in life, to move forward instead of standing in place. So he gives the shell to a crab who needs it more and embraces his need. Kril goes onward and tries to make the sea a better place.
The Unfathom is a turning point for other characters, too, even ones who don't change much. Take Nemma, who (despite how much I love her) is a static character. She's the same at the start of the game as at the end, but the Unfathom is still where we see her greatest shift—deciding that she's had enough of adventure and wants to go back to Bottomfeeders and her kids.
The Unfathom is also where Chitan gets consumed by her hatred (or has her hatred hijacked by Praya Dubia—not sure which framing is better). The Unfathom's ancient trash ignites Konche's mixture of archaeological passion and nostalgia, turning him from a mostly passive exposition machine to an active agent. And the Unfathom is where Inkerton shoots Roland after one insult too many.
And then there's Firth, who arguably also has a character arc. At the start of the game, he wants to be a plutocrab like Roland. After seeing Roland's factory firsthand, Firth realizes Roland isn't as nice a businessman as he imagined; he changes how he talks about his goal, but it doesn't seem like he's changed his actual goals much. He still wants to be the trash-economy version of a billionaire philanthropist.
And then he falls into the Unfathom. We barely see Firth between when everyone falls into the Unfathom and when Firth claims the Ultimate Whorl, but something shifted. Maybe through slow contemplation, maybe through a sudden madness.
One way or another, that want fades to the background. When Firth talks about his plans for New Carcinia, he's not talking about building a business to rival Shell Corp, or even charitable works. He's talking about taking control of New Carcinia and reshaping it to fit his dream. Trash for everyone! A booming economy! Something something, advanced technology? Whatever!
Firth wanted to be Roland. But at some point, he realized that what he "needed" was power. (Not all character arcs point up.)
A lot of people seem to dislike that Firth took the final-boss mantle, but I like it. When the nicest crabitalist in the entire game comes to power, he immediately loses the nice-guy philanthropy angle in favor of a god complex. Another Crab's Treasure is saying that that's the kind of person who makes it big under capitalism, that we can't make capitalism better by paying better capitalists. The only reason Firth wasn't as bad as Roland is his lack of wealth; he dropped the pretense once he was strong enough to get away with it.

STORIES TELLING: HOW RECURRING MUSIC IN OFMD CAUSES MENTAL DEVASTATION IN THE VERY BEST WAY
How the Blackbeard theme, Gnossienne No. 5, and Voi Che Sapepte reveal, reinforce and recontextualize the narrative. An in-depth analysis of key scenes throughout seasons 1 and 2.
Much gratitude to pocket friends who were so encouraging and provided valuable feedback while I worked on this.
Meta by these authors (links, below the cut) influenced this video:
@asneakyfox, @asongaboutpirates, @bakasara, @doyoueverstopandthink, @chaotic-neutral-knitter, @forpiratereasons @fresne999 @gaypiratepropaganda, @jaskierx, @medievill, @mxmollusca, @piratecaptainscaptainpirates @veeagainsttheday, @57flagsofdeath
Gnossienne No. 5 doyoueverstopandthink - i will literally never get over about how fantastic the transition from robert schumann's "träumerei" to erik satie's "gnossiennes: no. 5" is
Voi Che Sapete asongaboutpirates - Another little detail about OFMD that makes me go feral
Transformation in OFMD fresne999 - Half way through the journey of our analyses mxmollusca - The transformation from object to subject, from something that has things done to it versus someone with agency.
Ed's & Izzy's Relationship asneakyfox - you have to understand i have always felt the key thing that makes blackhands interesting...
chaotic-neutral-knitter - Izzy telling Stede "I know you think you understand him," and Stede immediately describing Ed's emotional state perfectly accurately... gaypiratepropaganda - On Izzy saying "because of your feelings for Stede fucking Bonnet"
Ed's Arc veeagainsttheday - Ed, Killing, and the Kraken in Our Flag Means Death S1 and S2
piratecaptainscaptainpirates - I've been thinking about how Ed starts directly killing people in s2e8 57flagsofdeath - Still thinking about this scene. Ed lights the fire place, puts a blanket on the floor to lay on, and puts the two cake toppers next to each other before rolling over and bursting into tears. asneakyfox - i've talked a fair bit about how i don't think "anger issues" is a very useful way to describe how the show frames ed's relationship with violence
Izzy's Arc bakasara - Trying to parse my thoughts on Izzy's death and why I had a different reaction to it than I thought I would. forpiratereasons - all right. i'm ready to talk about izzy.
Love & Relationships in OFMD jaskierx - posting some thoughts from the discord about how many 'irl relationship' things they're dealing with in ep7 and how much i am eating my mattress about it medievill - ofmd does not give a fuck about reality or history or anachronism but it draws the line at magic dick.

[ID: Three photos of a purple to pink to orange gradient yarn sitting on weathered wood planks in direct sunlight. In the first, the yarn is a single, unplied twist wrapped into a ball around a disc shaped core (the cardboard of an empty masking tape roll).
In the second, it is a loosely tied hank of three-ply yarn; it has been chain-plied, so neighboring segments of yarn are wrapped together, preserving the color change with minimal variegation.
The third photo features the hank laid with the opposite side up next to a shallow dark-orange mug with a spindle resting in it at a 40 degree angle. The spindle was 3D printed horizontally with a rainbow colored filament, from a spot of orange on one side through red, purple, blue, and to green on the other side. It is about nine and a half inches or twenty-four and a half centimeters long. The spindle is a supported Russian style, its base an inverted teardrop shape before a waist and the shaft of the spindle that's widest just above the waist and tapers down to as thin a spike at the top as possible. End ID]
I spun yarn! And plied it! This spindle and spinnable fluff were an incredibly generous gift from @dangerphd amid excess from 3D printing experiments! I'd previously spun one skein on a drop spindle in high school -- and I loved it for the process and made a chunky shawl of the Stephen West Spectra scarf design with it, but boy was it an uncontrolled thick and thin mess. Whether due to actually carrying over that learning more than a decade later, or the lighter (supported) spindle, or marginally more patience with age, this went way better!
I was definitely struggling with repeated breaks at the start and compromised my intention to go as thin as possible, but by the end I felt like I got decent control and consistency in my single's weight. And seeing how much less fragile those once-broken sock-weight singles are once plied should help me keep up the confidence with future fiber to really push for the thinner threads that I want to use. I had just learned about chain plying and wanted to try it when Danger sent the gradient fluff, so it wasn't a problem when there were several spots that I was sure would need plying for strength--and overall it's still less chunky than the thicker parts of the single I had made before! And much more even than I expected.
I haven't been brave and tried fulling it yet, just barely dampened and hung with a minor weight (a thick flannel shirt on its hanger) while drying. (It smells like wool once wet, though less strongly than some and I don't actually know its fiber contents.) But it's already pretty well behaved. It's a bit less than 20 feet of yarn, and I have to get into and through a different project right now, but I'll find something that lets me use it soon enough.
