A few days ago the plan was to drive for a few hours into North Carolina, take a break for a couple of hours to grab lunch, work on some photos, let the motor rest, then continue on.  Things hardly ever go to plan. And, really, why should they?  Things happen, and the only way to move forward is to accept that the only control you have is how you handle it in that moment.  Standing out on the side of HWY 64 with vehicles whizzing and roaring by, watching coolant gurgle from anywhere and everywhere it seemed, listening to the engine scream, spit and hiss was one of those moments.  But these moments often are the introduction to a great story. A conversation with the tow truck operator led to finding out he used to live in Durango, CO for 4 years, about an hour from my brother-in-law's current residence. Beyond that, he and Thomas share a birthday. After the tow truck dropped us off at the repair shop, Thomas turns to me rather puzzled and says, "Happy birthday."  I look at him and ask, "Did you forget?"  He says, "No, I just didn't realize what day it was, Nathan and I both wrote the 26th on the receipt/bill/ticket." We took in some views along the 25 mile ride and shared some stories. Possibly our favorite line from the conversation was this: Only two things really matter with a vehicle. All that matters is that the go pedal and the whoa pedal work. "The GPS is taking us to a laundromat." - "No. This is the right place. See? Starnes BBQ." - "Mehhh...I don't know." - The horseshoe bar works its way around the room. Fixed swivel stools reminiscent of the '50s, nothing but windows for two of the exterior walls and teal paint that I can only hope they got for one helluva discount. It's one of a kind; that's for sure. In the back corner you'll find a photo montage of past owners. Generation by generation. These guys know their "Q", or that's what we were told anyway. An old timer, somewhat attached to his seat, reads the day's paper and raises an eyebrow at the couple walking in who clearly "ain't from 'round here." Can't say either of us ever tried bbq at 8 am before, but the ghost of yesterday's Marlboro man let us know it's the only way. The menu at Starnes is straightforward. You can order bbq - pork, beef or ham. You can order sides - potato salad or slaw. You can order coffee, tea, water or Coke products. If there's anything else, its stuff only the locals and returning customers know about.  That said, we're hooked. A pair of pulled pork sandwiches, slaw and potato salad accompanied by a damn fine cup o joe for less than a number 8 super sized at Mickey D's.  I've read the poor reviews of this place, and they're all horse puckey.  "Not enough meat," whines one. "Terrible sauce," comments another. I don't give a flying flip. It's sassy. It's classy. Their meat is excellent, and the sauce will kick your ass if you aren't careful.  So, Starnes, if you're out there in or near Paducah, KY reading this, just know that we'll be back for more...and that's coming from a guy born and raised on Lexington (NC) bbq.
