A few days ago the plan was to drive for a few hours into North Carolina, take a break for a couple of hours to grab lunch, work on some photos, let the motor rest, then continue on.  Things hardly ever go to plan. And, really, why should they?  Things happen, and the only way to move forward is to accept that the only control you have is how you handle it in that moment.  Standing out on the side of HWY 64 with vehicles whizzing and roaring by, watching coolant gurgle from anywhere and everywhere it seemed, listening to the engine scream, spit and hiss was one of those moments.  But these moments often are the introduction to a great story. A conversation with the tow truck operator led to finding out he used to live in Durango, CO for 4 years, about an hour from my brother-in-law's current residence. Beyond that, he and Thomas share a birthday. After the tow truck dropped us off at the repair shop, Thomas turns to me rather puzzled and says, "Happy birthday."  I look at him and ask, "Did you forget?"  He says, "No, I just didn't realize what day it was, Nathan and I both wrote the 26th on the receipt/bill/ticket." We took in some views along the 25 mile ride and shared some stories. Possibly our favorite line from the conversation was this: Only two things really matter with a vehicle. All that matters is that the go pedal and the whoa pedal work.
