Languages were confusing. Harper was perfectly fluent in multiple of them, one of them being english, and still hadn't gotten used to the transition. The accents were a bit thicker and different than the ones she'd encountered in the States or her time in England.

The renewed expectation of a more protectionist policy approach in Donald Trump’s second term weighed on emerging-market currencies like Brazil’s real in Monday’s session. The exchange rate per U.S. dollar ended up 0.56%, at R$5.7695.

Marcos Weigt, treasury director at Travelex Bank, said the effect of Mr. Trump’s tariffs on China might not hit as hard as in the past, which could limit its indirect impact on the real. “Since 2020, with the United States pursuing ‘nearshoring’ and ‘friendshoring,’ dependency between the U.S. and China has declined on both sides, as China has also diversified its partnerships,” he said, noting that China’s exports to the rest of the world (excluding the U.S.) rose to $3.9 trillion last year from $2.5 trillion in 2018. “There will be an impact, yes, but it will be smaller. If it affects China less, it affects Brazil less too.”

While awaiting fiscal measures and amid a tougher global backdrop, Brazil’s local interest rate futures also rose in Monday’s low-liquidity trading session, which was affected by a lack of action in the Treasuries market.

Liberia’s Central Bank clarifies reports of $20 million cash consignment received by BoG

The Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) has clarified reports of a US$20M cash importation consigned to the Bank of Ghana (BoG). According to the CBL, the cash destined for Monrovia is a legitimate transaction.

It said the importation of United States dollars is part of the Bank’s normal function, which is required to meet the needs of the economy, including the USD withdrawal demands and needs of the Government of Liberia and the commercial banks. “CBL and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) have long standing Cash Custody Agreement executed for the BoG to provide overnight custody for CBL imported cash when shipped from London by Travelex Currency, which is an international currency shipment company. These cash shipments by flights are cleared through both the Ghana and Liberia Customs, thus validating their legitimate sources,” the CBL said in a release on August 28, 2024.
