CABJ match
I wouldn’t consider myself a live-sports fan. Unless it includes my home team, wings and maybe some alcohol, I honestly could care less. But honestly, who could refuse a chance to experience a live futbol match in a country that lives and breathes futbol? Thanks to the help and research from some friends, a hostel tour guide and an unnamed charter bus, we made it to the match with two hours to spare - just in time to lock down our spots in the standing fan section.
One of the first things I learned about Argentina is that the people here are passionate about anything and everything they come into contact with. But loving futbol here, is in their blood - people go insane. Men and women crawl up the rails, they strap their toddlers around their shoulders and teach them the signature arm movements before they can even walk. They sing and chant their hearts out from before the match starts, to their walk on their way out of the stadium. Boca fans are passionately insane, barbaric and mentally deranged in the best fucking way possible. I was both exhilarated and terrified every time they made a goal - as the whole stadium trembled and shook from everyone cheering and leaping with joy.
To witness this was like feeling the beating heart of Argentina itself in my own hands.
And of course, knowing myself, I couldn’t just take in the exhilarating adrenaline high-feeling without experiencing the drop of it shortly after. Is it so fucked up that one part of the world is singing and chanting their hearts out to a futball game that their team just won, but another part of the world is at war and children are hurt?
How somewhere in the world, one person just landed their dream job and signed an amazing offer, but another person just lost their job and is now worried about feeding their family?
One couple can be celebrating an engagement - a huge milestone in their partnership, but another is on the verge of a break up / experiencing the worst heartache of loss?
It’s important for me to know - I was lucky to be able to chant along with locals and cheer whenever the Bocas scored. Heck, I’m lucky we didn’t get trampled or domino’d, because we actually almost did.
But I also realize it’s important for me to make the space and mental capacity to know that there are those who are less fortunate at the moment. To hold space and empathy in my heart for those who are on the opposite hand of what I get to experience right now. Above all, I understand and accept that everything can change within a second of my existence. And that, I’m both equally thankful and terrified to know.
