I am on high alert whenever I travel with my fellow Czechs. Even some of my friends whom I thought were well-travelled and responsible were like "Travel insurance for sports? We don't need that, we're just going to ride some wild rivers!"

There's a running joke that whenever somebody dies in Tatra mountains(Slovakia) there's a 99% chance they were Czechs bcs nobody else would get the bright idea to go climb the mountains when they're officially closed for the season(because guess what, it's dangerous and getting help is very hard during that time).

At least my parents gave me one good thing and that was survival instinct and self-preservation sense, I am sorry for my fellow countrypeople tho :)

(p.s. for my usa followers, travel insurance for abroad for extreme sports costs like 10 bucks for a week or two, plus as a EU citizen you have healthcare around EU for free within reason)

Hi everyone!

On May 15th, I returned to, what I often think of as my second home, Vienna. With dreams of a relaxing summer in the former-Hapsburg capital, I entered the city of Vienna and checked into my Airbnb. On May 16th, however, I slipped on a manhole cover outside of the grocery store and broke both of my arms.

Luckily, the Austrian healthcare system was able to take care of my effectively and quickly. At Vienna's general Hospital (AKH Wien), I underwent a surgery to get a plate in the right arm and spent three days in the recovery ward. At least the view from the recovery ward was beautiful!

I'm so lucky to have a wonderful support system here in Vienna. While in the hospital and after being released, my friends here have helped me immensely. From bringing my toiletries, books and clean clothes in the hospital to offering to help me do the little things that are difficult with two broken arms, I couldn't ask for a better group of friends.

After three weeks, I got the two casts off. I have a few more checkup appointments to make sure everything is healing correctly, but I am sure I'll still manage to have a great summer despite the injury!

Alarm bells ring in Japan as experts warn of fast-spreading new Covid variant KP. 3 - Published July 19, 2024

Japan is grappling with a new and highly contagious coronavirus variant that is fuelling the country’s 11th wave of Covid-19 infections, health experts warn. The KP. 3 variant is spreading rapidly, even among those who are vaccinated or have recovered from previous infections, according to Kazuhiro Tateda, president of the Japan Association of Infectious Diseases.

“It is, unfortunately, the nature of the virus to become more resilient and resistant each time it changes into a different form,” Tateda told This Week in Asia. “People lose their immunity quite quickly after being vaccinated, so they have little or no resistance.”

Tateda, who sits on Japan’s advisory panel formed at the start of the pandemic, said the coming weeks will be critical as authorities monitor the variant’s spread and impact.

While hospitals have reported a sharp uptick in Covid-19 admissions, Tateda said he is “relieved that not many of these cases are severe”. Typical symptoms of the KP. 3 variant include high fever, sore throat, loss of smell and taste, headaches, and fatigue.

According to the health ministry, medical facilities across Japan logged a 1.39-fold – or 39 per cent – increase in infections from July 1 to 7, compared to the previous week.

Okinawa prefecture has been the hardest hit by the new strain of the virus, with hospitals reporting an average of nearly 30 infections per days. The KP. 3 variant has accounted for more than 90 per cent of Covid-19 cases nationwide, the Fuji News Network reported, leading to renewed concerns about bed shortages at medical facilities.

Since Japan’s first detected Covid-19 case in early 2020 involving a man who returned from the Chinese city of Wuhan, East Asian nation has recorded a total of 34 million infections and around 75,000 related deaths. The country’s Covid-19 caseload peaked on August 5, 2022, when more than 253,000 people were receiving treatment.

Japan’s uptick in cases coincides with similar increases being observed globally. In the US, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reported a 23.5 per cent week-over-week rise in the number of people visiting hospitals with Covid-19 symptoms during the week ending July 6.

High-profile US.figures such as President Joe Biden and Doug Emhoff, husband of Vice-President Kamala Harris, have recently tested positive and gone into isolation. Meanwhile, several riders in the ongoing Tour de France cycling race have also returned positive test results.

Experts say it is too early to determine the full impact of the new variant on Japanese businesses or cross-border activities like travel. Precautionary measures are already in place at the country’s air and seaports to monitor the health of incoming arrivals. However, the global spike in cases may deter some Japanese from venturing abroad this summer.

A recent survey by Nippon Life insurance found that just 3.2 per cent of Japanese plan to travel abroad in the coming months, which is likely to depress annual travel figures once again. In 2023, Japan saw 9.62 million outbound travellers, a recovery after three years of extremely low pandemic-era numbers, but still far below the 20.01 million outbound travellers recorded in 2019.

Despite the latest surge, infectious disease expert Tateda insists there is no need for panic in Japan. However, he emphasised the importance of following precautions implemented during the pandemic’s peak, such as mask-wearing in public, handwashing, and social distancing.

Tateda also stressed that anyone testing positive should immediately isolate themselves.

Hello sex witch!

I am an afab person who hasn't ""lost their virginity"" with another person yet - but i do masturbate enough to know what i like, and so i would like to start having sex with people. Preferably casually, because I'm not really interested in relationships rn.

Problem is, I have lived my whole life in a small-ish town where there are hardly any opportunities for me to meet other queer people or safely approach anyone with sex in mind. the amount of worst case scenarios you've already come up with regarding this plan suggests to me that it's maybe not the best idea for you.

in any case, I generally don't recommend anyone goes into any situation dead set on making it a sexual opportunity. that's not ultimately something that you can totally control - partnered sex definitionally requires at least one other person to be involved, and that's not something you can guarantee will happen unless you want to pay someone for it (which is a perfectly fine option, but I'm not sure it's the kind of experience you're looking for.)

it takes a lot of random chance and luck for compatible sexual partners to find each other, and if that doesn't happen when you were really determined that it would it can be devastating. trust me, I've been there - and I wasn't even doing something as exciting as going abroad. it can really suck the wind out of your sails during what could otherwise be a very cool experience if you're holding the trip to a sexual standard that you can fall short of through absolutely no fault of your own - after all, no matter how eager you are you've ultimately got no say over whether other people want to have sex with you.

I'd say you can certainly go into the trip with a mind open to the possibility of sex and assess your options if you find yourself meeting someone who you feel a possible connection with, but don't approach the trip with sex as a set goal.

I’m considering my own adult gap year but I don’t really know what to do. Do you have any advice??

I have a few pieces of advice and a couple things you should know. First of all, I’m writing this to you from the one coffeeshop in Inverness on a sunny morning, with a whole day to kill before my sleeper train leaves for London. I’m away for about two weeks and…kind of miss my job? I’m writing postcards to my friends’ kids, born and not-yet-born. I’m happy, I’ve landed somewhere happy, is what I’m starting with.

But so first of all, when I say I took a gap year, what I mean is that I quit my job and career with nothing planned except a trip to Paris. I spent about five weeks abroad before coming home to look for a new job and career. I found lots of little small jobs that were basically nothing — part time as an author’s assistant, running coaching some nights. I was worried about money and I had no health insurance, but I happily wandered the city well rested and a little dazed. When I finally started getting into real jobs finally the pandemic came and derailed that.

All of which to say, know that depending on your goals for your gap year and how you spend it and your particular luck, an “adult gap year” represents a break with a traditional trajectory and you have to be ready for the consequences of that. In many ways, it can make you enjoy every day so much more (and to me that’s worth it not even a contest), but the pandemic was very financially stressful for me, and while I’m now in a job and career I love, I’m ten years older than everyone else at my same level and I’ve just started making as much as I did in 2018, and that’s it’s own kind of sacrifice.

So I guess my tip is do it because why would you ever choose to be anything but as happy as possible every day but that tip works best if you’re in the specific circumstances I was which were: miserable at my job, had saved up $10,000, had no kids or pets or even plants really depending on me, had never developed a sense of external definitions of success, and was prepared for being poor by many many years of practice.

Also you don’t have to go abroad I just love it because the removal from your own context makes you think new thoughts, and also the specific time I went — summer/fall of 2018 — was pre-TikTok and travelling insanity and you could like go to Palermo and stay in an apartment and no one would speak English and the whole place wasn’t overwhelmed with lines and being photogenic and stuff.
