The button is smooth under his hand as he pushes on it. By now, Scar is hardly aware of it.

He hits the button.

A book appears before him. He opens it.

A distressed, frustrated, sob tears out of his throat as he throws the book as far as he possibly can. It hits the stone statue in front of him, the pages folding in on themselves as the book drops to the ground.

"Let me go home!" he shouts, raw and distraught, and so, so desperate. No one is around to hear it. Only a statue, one that seems to be mocking him with it's engraved and empty face.

He looks at where the Fail button once sat, where it was so cruelly taken from him. For a moment, there had been a bleak, dim, little hope. It shone down on him as he noticed it, and he had felt a momentary relief. Only for the button to disappear right under his touch. He's left with nothing but the Succeed button.

"Please..." he mumbles, dejected, as he falls back into the hopeless loop before him. He slams his hand down on the button. A book appears. He opens it.

Win Secret Life.

Scar hits the button. A book appears. He opens it. Win Secret Life.

Books land at his feet, his inventory is full of them. He can't carry any more. Scar hits the button.

Love a self-inflicted time loop. The main character isn’t trapped. They can stop whenever they want. But how can they when things aren’t perfect yet? They can do better than this. They need to try again. They can get it right this time. They just need to try again. They can stop anytime they want. Just one more time. They can fix this. They just need to try again. This au takes place around the time of sigurd's logs/before them (i haven't decided if Sigurd's crew exists here or not yet)!

Siffrin was someone who used to live on the Golden Planet before it got eaten. They may not remember anything beyond being found in an escape pod, but they're still paralyzed by fear when getting close to the selling window. He's always first in the facilities, making jumps, braving traps, and heading as deep as he can for scrap.

Mirabelle and Isabeau are the medic and fighter respectively, who both came from the same moon colony. They were both pressured into taking jobs by a work-based society, and applied for the company under the impression that it was a short, high-paying internship with nebulous risks.

Odile is their resident ship manager. She keeps a watchful eye over everyone and relays information about monsters, scrap, etc. In absolutely dire situations, she may come help with scrap. Despite claiming to be a first-timer, her badge says Leader??

Nille and Bonnie ended up with the crew after taking a chance to run away from their parents. Seeing a high-paying job that provided everything and would take them far away sounded too good to pass up. Nille lied about Bonnie's age to take them with her. After seeing the reality of this job, though, she regrets not finding another way out. Bonnie is permanently on ship-duty; they mainly type in whatever numbers Odile tells them. Nille is also a fighter, though she prefers the weighty stop sign as opposed to Isabeau's shovel.

Loop, after hundreds upon thousands of quotas, dying every possible death, learning everything they could- even the real identity of The Company- realizes there was one thing they've never done before. They've never died to The Company. Desperate for a way out, and haunted by the whispers and screams beyond the wall, they give themselves up. Maybe that would finally satisfy the monster- to have devoured every last piece of the Golden Planet. Maybe their crew could finally rest easy that way. Well, they didn't loop back. But through the dark and damp, there's static on the walkie talkie. Loop picks up, and hears their own voice just beyond the wall.

(Loop's design is the most different by far, since instead of consuming a star, they themselves are slowly getting digested. They're inspired by the visual of red crying faces from the logs :D)

The lyrical motif of “I’m not a loser” is not just an assertion of worth, it’s a claim to safety and power. Peter doesn’t dress like that because he’s a nerd, he dresses like that to avoid attention, to not be a loser.

When Max is destroyed, Grace replaces him.

Suddenly Grace is singing about how the ‘nerds’ will rise up and kill. The threat shifts but is never gone

“I’m not a loser” is absolution, it says “I am not worthy of death” in a very literal sense. Character beg for their lives with it. The final song, where Grace becomes the new apocalypse? The background is still “I’m not a loser”. Because it was never about nerds versus jocks. It was always about escaping death.

But people go missing in Hatchet Field every day

And nobody ever dies in the Waylon house

So we go around and around and around

The same two people flirt at a coffee shop, the same cops run the same dirty beat, the same rich fucks call the same lawyer, over and over and over
