Don't worry, I dont think Ive answered clearly yet but he is not stuck! Transformations are brought on by stress/negative emotions/spiraling and he turns back when he calms down. Unfortunately knowing that you might randomly and painfully start transforming into a monster at any given moment tends to cause a lot of stress and make spirals worse.
