In my opinion, the ideal way to adapt the entire Silmarillion is through a multi-season anime, with each major event being made into an arc
Like:
The Ainulindalë Arc: the Music of the Ainur, the Two Lamps, and the Battle of the Powers
The Journey to Aman Arc: the Awakening of the Elves at Cuiviénen, the Creation of Orcs, the Sundering of the Teleri, Thingol and Melian's meeting in Nan Elmoth, etc.
The Years of the Trees Arc: the life of Fëanor, the creation of the Silmarils, Melkor's corruption of the Noldor, etc.
The Darkening of Valinor Arc: the death of Finwë, the destruction of the Two Trees, the Oath of Fëanor, and the First Kinslaying
The First Battle Arc: the First Battle of Beleriand, the Flight of the Noldor, Fëanor's death, Maedhros's capture
The Sun and Moon Arc: the Coming of Men, Finrod's friendship with the House of Bëor, Fingon's rescue of Maedhros, the Mereth Aderthad
The Glorious Battle Arc: the Dagor Aglareb, the construction of Gondolin, Thingol learning of the First Kinslaying, etc.
The Long Peace Arc: Aredhel leaving Gondolin and her encounter with Eöl, the birth of Maeglin, their escape to Gondolin, etc.
The Dagor Bragollach Arc: the Dagor Bragollach, Finrod's rescue by Barahir, the Fall of Fingolfin, the Outlaws of Barahir, etc.
The Quest for the Silmaril Arc: the story of Beren and Lúthien, of course
The Nirnaeth Arnoediad Arc: the lead-up to, and the actual Battle of Unnumbered Tears
The Children of Húrin Arc: Húrin's capture and curse, and the story of Túrin Turambar, of course
The Second Kinslaying Arc: Thingol's death, the Battle of the Thousand Caves, Dior's ascension to Doriath, and the Second Kinslaying
The Fall of Gondolin Arc: Tuor's quest to Gondolin, his romance with Idril, Maeglin's betrayal, Eärendil's birth and childhood, and the city's destruction
The Havens of Sirion Arc: the meeting of Eärendil and Elwing, their childhood together, their eventual marriage, and the births of Elrond and Elros
Eärendil's Voyage Arc: the Third Kinslaying, Elwing's transformation into a bird, Eärendil's voyage to Aman, and their plea to the Valar for aid
The War of Wrath Arc: the War of Wrath, the defeat of Morgoth, the reclaiming of the Silmarils, the choice of Elrond and Elros, the death of Maedhros, etc.
Basically, a Silmarillion anime would give One Piece a run for its money based on length, lol. And it would be even better if it was done by the studio that did Spy x Family, since their animation style is absolutely beautiful.
I would watch the hell out of a Silm anime!

I've been wanting for a little while to talk about Pandaemonium, and about Hermes, and what I think these two topics have to do with each other, so here goes. The whole time I was playing the story in Pandae, I kept thinking that I wish I could tell Hermes about all this. For one, because Hermes expresses that he feels he's the only one emotionally suffering, yet here is Erichthonios also clearly going through some shit, so maybe they could find some sort of solidarity together.
For two, because I feel Pandae proves Hermes right in his criticisms of the Ancient world. It's essentially every single flaw of their world in microcosm! Let me try to explain:
To start, let's review Hermes and his problems:
Tumblr media
This is from the conversation with him after you show him the Elpis flower changing color for you. He expresses the sympathy he feels for creations, and how being forced to put them down for the sake of the star puts him in this ethical crisis. The entire Ancient world is built around this idea of "for the sake of the star" at the expense of all else, including the lives of their creations and their own individual emotions. Because of this, Hermes feels all the more isolated, as if he's the only one who ever feels bad or questions the foundation of their society.
There is something very, very twisted about the fact that Pandaemonium lies geographically below Elpis, the Hell to its symbolic Eden or Heaven. At the very moment Hermes is crying over having to put down dangerous creations, even more dangerous creations are being kept alive in a hellish gothic prison replete with chains and cages.
As I traveled through Pandaemonium, I also kept thinking "Why is it a prison?" Why does such a place even need to exist? As we find out in Anabaseios, the concept of it being a place to research dangerous creations is a cover story, it's more or less Athena's personal laboratory for her to pursue her goal of godhood. I've seen people praise Athena for being a more shallow and simple villain than Emet-Selch for example, but she's not just a megalomaniac:
Tumblr media
"I am no different from our peers" is soooo telling. Her obsession with remaking mankind in her image isn't just a selfish madness, it's the ideals of the Ancients, their obsession with making perfect creations for the sake of the star, taken to it's furthest and most insane conclusion! (also note the irony in her belief that a goddess would remake the species better, when Hydaelyn, the only true goddess in the setting, chose to preserve them as they are. Arguably even making them worse by Sundering).
So Athena takes her duty to the star way too far, Lahabrea sees that she's become a danger to the star for it, and kills her, then cuts off the Hephiastos side of himself - another example of how ruthless the Ancients can be and how they justify anything for the sake of the star. Because the Ancients also place a low importance on emotion, he never talks to Erichthonios about Athena. Feeling neglected by his father and curious about his mother, Erich is lead deeper into Pandaemonium and made even more vulnerable to Athena's manipulations. So even if it was one woman's madness that spawned the action in Pandae, the other flaws of Ancient society serve to perpetuate and exacerbate it.
It's also worse mentioning that for Pandae being a prison for dangerous creations, you actually fight more transformed Ancients and corrupted Warders than you do actual animals. As my brother put it in his own meta, Pandae isn't a case of "inmates running the asylum" as much as it is the power that the Warders wield over their creations corrupting them. Athena is indirectly behind the Warder's transformations, but she also took advantage of vulnerabilities that were already there, like Hesperos's fixation on Lahabrea.
And the same obsession with perfect creations for the sake of the star, the abuse of the power over life and death, continues to characterize the Ancients after the Sundering, with the way Emet and the Ascians ruthlessly Rejoin Shards in order to bring back their "perfect" world. But what Elpis and Pandaemonium prove is that the idea of the Ancient world as a paradise is little more than Emet's grief and nostalgia talking. Hermes may have triggered the Final Days, but I feel the blame for destroying "paradise" doesn't lie entirely on him - his crisis was layered on top of myriad flaws with the world he lived in, flaws he felt he didn't have the freedom to talk about because everyone else believed the world was perfect.
Any world where people can't question the foundation of their society is very far from perfect. A world where people ruthlessly wield power over others, both creations and other people, in favor of a grand goal is no paradise. A world in which prisons exist is no paradise.
If my tone started to sound a bit vengeful there, it's because I sympathize deeply with Hermes, and can't help but feel a bit vindicated on his behalf when I think that Pandaemonium proves him right and Emet-selch wrong. But even after I've spent all this time tearing into the Ancient world, I feel like I have to remind both myself and any readers that the point of the conflict between the Ancient and Sundered world in FF14 isn't to objectively compare them and decide which is better and which is worse. Such pragmatism would be in-character for an Ancient, but we don't have to subscribe to their views. Think about it - even if the Ancient world was proven to be a true paradise, we'd still choose our broken world over it, because returning would cost too many lives, and because we love our world not because it is perfect but because it is ours.
The choice is just made a little easier by all this proof that their world was never as perfect as they said it was.

PIGLIN
Racial abilities:
Type Medium Monstrous Humanoids(Orc subtype)
Speed 30ft
Senses Darkvision 60ft
Ability Score Modifiers +2STR -2INT
Gold scent: Piglin can detect any golden material and sense their status within 60ft. This effect functions like the spell Detect Metal but only on gold.
Greed: +2 bonus on Appraise checks to determine the price of nonmagical goods that contain precious metals or gemstones. This bonus increases of a +2 if they are made of Gold.
Piglin skills: Craft (Gold), Handle animal, Perception, Survival are always class skills for Piglins.
Orc Ferocity: Once per day, when a member of this race is reduced to fewer than 0 hit points but is not killed, it can fight on for 1 more round as if disabled. At the end of its next turn, unless brought to above 0 hit points, it immediately falls unconscious and begins to die.
Frenzy: Once per day, whenever a member of this race takes damage, it flies into a frenzy for 1 minute, gaining a +2 racial bonus to Constitution and Strength, but a –2 penalty to AC.
Weapon Familiarity: Piglins are proficient with Battleaxe, Heavy Crossbow, Longsword, Pickaxe.
Limited telephaty: Piglins possess a crude but efficient form of telephaty. While they cannot use it to perform coversations, they can sense the general emotions of their kin(only of other Piglins) and understand them reacting as a single unit in front of danger. This effect is constant as long as the Piglin is conscious and links any Piglins within 50ft with each other.
Unnatural Fear: Piglins are automatically afraid of all forms of undead Piglin, undead Hoglin and Soul Fire sources(magical and not) and they will never come close to these.(treat this effect as a Fear spell)
Overworld curse: Any Piglin that leaves the Nether will turn into a zombie version of itself within 3 turns with no saves. This effect can be halted only with a Wish or Miracle spell for 1 round. These spells can also be used to return transformed Piglins into their normal forms.
Languages: Piglins begin to speak Orc. Those with higher score in Intelligence can choose from the following languages: Common, Ignan, Abyssal, Giant, Alko, Undercommon and Necril.
Background: Piglins are brutish, greedy, primitive, yet united, inhabitants of the Nether. They live in various locations of the crimson landscape but never in a Soul valley. The Piglins live a nomadic-hunter-gatherer tribe life-style, never still for too long but from time to time setting in a ruined Bastion or a Nether fortress which they consider a monument of their glorious days of the past. They are very superstitious and afraid of Soul fire that traps the very souls of the victim(or so they think). They also run away from any version of themselves that has been turned into a zombie. It is said that in the past, there were many wars and at the peak of their civilization, the Piglins invaded the Overworld causing havoc and plundering the land. Resources were taken, inhabitants were enslaved, cities turned into rubble, obsidian portals opened everywhere in the land. Mighty fortresses of gold, quartz and blackstone towered in the Nether as testament to their might… however, one day it all crumbled to dust and the very gods casted a curse upon the Piglins: If they dared to returned the very land would sunder their being and strip them of any form of life for they greedy stole too many in the past. And so they walk, sometimes equipped with gold equipments and barely remembering the days of old, yet obsessed with gold and willing to do anything to get more…
Physical appearance and personality: Piglins are muscular powerful humanoids with tusks, pig-like faces and features. They wear simple, rugged leather clothes but they seek to get gold as soon as possible to build their weapons and armors. Piglins, are obsessed with gold as it is the only thing to show their status: The more gold one has, the more his status is considered higher, until someone steals it, or worst. Wearing gold armor and giving gold items to Piglins is the only known way to stop their territorial rampage and they will give you something in return(that is not gold). To survive the harsh Nether they learned a few tricks: like how to squeeze water out of mushrooms or Nether wart. No matter what, they are always ready to barter as they are to steal, kill, betray or hunt. Sometimes, they manage to gather into a fortress of old like a Bastion, where they organize and gather their loot. However, these organized groups are short lived as their hierarchy is as fragmented as their long lost empire. One always tries to topple the other and while they try to grow their children they also engage in hunting/training Hoglins or seeking resources while at it. Be forewarned, for they will consider even the gold in a wall theirs as a sort of a “secret stash” only to have another Piglin yell that it was his causing a massive rampage. They worship various spirits of fire, strength, war, riches and death that are all the same God, their creator. However, even these cults disappear as they appear… like a flame flickering in the dark. Overall, they are greedy, warlike, superstitious, survivalist pig-like humanoids that still will protect their clans with a ferocity that cannot be measured with words.

Geeeez, that 'Ruby filling in an empty grave' callback has me all but sold on this 'hi kids I'm Things' proposal. Pointless sidebar: any thoughts on General Rose's outfit/weapon changes since the tree flashback, or is she doing the 'makeovers are for Less Busy People' thing?
i think she should carry on the venerable team strq tradition of not changing her clothes for fourteen years /j
doylistically i doubt they’ll change her design up too much other than maybe some small alterations to suggest the passage of time a la rhodes. (unless there’s a switch to new animation software accompanying the jump to a new home, in which case models have to be redone anyway. but as long as they stick with maya, best to get their money’s worth out of the character model they have)
in an ideal pretend world where rwby has infinite money and time to do whatever hell it wants and go nuts with giving characters a realistic variety of outfits, i imagine summer’s wardrobe would evolve in a similar way to rwby’s from v1-3 -> v4-6 -> v7-8, because 1. no more pressure to look like a perfect storybook hero all the time, and 2. is the grown up child soldier perhaps a little alienated from her own preferences in similar ways to, say, cinder?
all of her design explorations are really good:
Tumblr media
i like B and D the best (although it is really funny to me how much B looks like a mashup of beacon/atlas cinder in ruby’s palette) so i’m a bit biased here but i think if summer does end up getting a new outfit, it’ll be something in the vein of one of Those, because both of them feel like plausible fourteen years later evolutions of her v9 fit.
sundered rose. well i hope someone who’s held a rifle before tweaks the design to fix the Not Meant For Human Hands grip and trigger. brgdfxgvk it makes me go ARGH! the same way jaune’s and ozma’s “PLEASE stab me in the shoulder please pleaseplease” armor situations do. and i’m really desperate to see it in action bc i am morbidly curious about the axe-to-rifle transform. but i don’t think it’ll change in any obvious ways

SO
FFXIV recently released their latest alliance raids.
Spoilers May Follow.
The Twelve, gods of Eorzea, are involved, as is the revelation (predicted by some online) that these gods were once people of the world before it was sundered, specifically those who sided with the person who did the Sundering.
So on the quest leading up to the third and final raid, you can talk to the gods you've met so far.
I went through that while talking in voice chat with someone else who was also going through these little chats and we shared the lines to see if there were any differences, such as Byregot commending me (level 90 crafter) for being so devoted to crafting, and encouraging crafting to the level 1 crafter, or patron gods having an extra word or five to say to an adherant player character.
But then I got extra lines from Nymeia and Althyk referencing them having faded memories of my character being familiar, of saying something or hearing something from someone long ago.
My partner didn't get those lines.
The only difference in our experience we could think of that would relate to this was thus: I had done every single Elpis side quest. He hadn't.
We immediately started searching and we think we found the characters who were Elpis researchers once and who then became the gods. There is a longer than normal sidequest chain dealing with, ultimately, the transformation of the underwhelming "Io" into the overwhelming "Behemoth." This sidequest chain involves a sister and brother named Maira and Alkaios.
(Bonus knowledge: The lead-up to the boss fight against Nymeia and Althyk involves fighting three Io's and a Behemoth.)
What really got me in the end though, looking through the quest events, was the little tidbit of knowledge that Alkaios, the brother, is often called upon in Elpis to help deal with the corpses of concept animals by utilizing time magics.
Althyk is the god of time.
I really think we got them.

I like to imagine that your verison dragon's second power, which if remember correctly you said was nature manipulation (which I like to refer to as Gaea), allows the user to control all nature, meaning plant life, the elements, weather, animals, and even natural disasters.
Kinda. Let me grab a little something:
I'll be using Ryuko from Miraculous AU for this
Tumblr media
The holder has a default form. They don't have access to many powers aside from Form Shift. It's once form shift is used that shit gets interesting
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With Form Shift, the holder can change form to a specific element, which sticks to the basics of nature, not including light and dark. These forms are air, water, nature, and fire.
With these specific forms, the holder has complete control of that element and it's very dangerous. For example, air form the holder can create tornados, dangerous high winds, and even steal the air from someone's lungs. Water form gets control over water and ice. Fire can destroy anything and everything. Nature can cause earthquakes, grow forests from nothing and destroy a city, and so much more.
Activation Phrases
Transformation: "Longg, Ascension"
Power: Form Shift
Tumblr media
Now that brings me to Mylene in Salvation. I haven't designed her other forms yet, but she has the same powers as Ryuko in Miraculous AU. The difference comes when Avatar state is achieved. The avatar is completely connected to the planet, knowing everything that is done, the pain, everything. It's in Avatar form they are truly a force as they have access to all control whereas holders can only control one element at a time. Making them a true goddess of the earth.
Activation Phrases
Transformation: "Longg, Ascension"
Power: Form Shift
Tumblr media
Now we have Rose as Cinders from Separate Worlds. Her powers are currently being reworked.
Activation Phrases
Transformation: "Longg, Ascension"
Power: None/Innate
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Presenting Mylene as Drakon in All That Remained. Her power is like the other dragons before her, form shift and nature manipulation.
Activation Phrases
Transformation: "Longg, Ascension"
Power: Form Shift
Tumblr media
Kagami is back as the dragon in Paradise as Delphyne. This is the first of the dragons that won't have different forms. Matching the strength of the other holders, she has full access to manipulate all that is nature, meaning nature itself, water, and wind, but no fire.
Activation Phrases
Transformation: "Longg, Ascension"
Power: Magna
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Me not realizing that I had forgotten to add this onto the dragon page. Anyway, I present Marinette in Amaranthine as Nimue. She retains the nature manipulation the way Delphyne does in Paradise, but with the addition of fire. However, as Nimue, the powers are used in a more benevolent manner.
Guenevere, where Longg is in control, uses the mastery over nature in destruction ways. Mainly due to her seeking to kill Atropa.
As Mordred, Marinette and Longg in perfect sync, have true mastery over all elements and uses them in helpful and destructive ways.
Activation Phrases:
Transformation: "Longg, Ascension"
Power: None/Innate
Tumblr media
Zoe as Wyvern in Siren's Song. Her powers will mirror that of Nimue, Amaranthine!Marinette.
Activation Phrases:
Transformation: "Longg, Ascension"
Power: Sunder
Tumblr media
Mylene of Court of Miracles. Firstly, I still fucking love her design. Secondly, she is a Midborn, the first of them to be shown. Her powers include:
Natural Disaster Manipulation
Environment Manipulation
Absolute Control of Nature

Since I’m also a Massive Transformers Nerd I will also share all my OCs favorite Transformers Media and Character:
WhismySwirl Daycare AU
BloodSolar really enjoys the IDW comics. Her favorite character is Prowl because like some, she loves to hate him.
Bloody likes the Bayverse Films for the Explosions and Death. His favorite character is Optimus because of how Brutal he is.
Grinnin’ like Rescue Bots because it’s nice and wholesome. Heatwave their favorite surprisingly, she like him because he’s grumpy but he cares
Last Child of the CODE AU:
Killcode enjoys Transformers Prime, it’s gritty but enjoyable to watch. Dreadwing is his favorite character because of the tragedy of his character.
Eclipse isn’t the biggest transformers fan but he knows enough and his favorite character fluctuates between WindBlade and any version of Shockwave
Bloodmoon more accurately; Butcher likes the WFC/FOC video game simply because he enjoys the Decepticon Campaign, his favorite character is Bruticus…I don’t think I need to elaborate. Harvest on the other hand actually likes the original cartoon from the 80’s because the hidden dark themes (that you don’t catch the first go around), his favorite character is Wildrider because he’s a raging psycho
Casey likes all Transformers Media but she definitely likes the Shattered Glass comics because it shows how much more messed up the Autobots can get if they weren’t the “Good Guys”. Her favorite character is Skyfire because he’s quite enjoyable and his character growth in Shattered Glass is interesting
Wonder Virus AU:

FFXIV Write Day 5 - Barbarous
In my WoL's canon, Emet-Selch is inspired to make the Azem crystal by a brief encounter with a shard long ago, not that long after the Sundering. This is that encounter. 1782 words. CW for death and typical Ascian disdain for the sundered and obviously spoilers.
The settlement could scarcely even be called such, a loose grouping of pitiful, miserable beings living in a series of squalid caves, clad in skins, if that. No agriculture. No animals kept. No structures. They hadn’t even managed to master fire. Not a one among them had the slightest spark of the arcane, never mind the creation magic that should have transformed this miserable excuse of a settlement into a proper dwelling.
Nowhere was there the slightest hint of anything more than grouping in numbers for the vague illusion of safety from the predators that roamed the land. Oh, they gathered plants for food, and others with comically primitive weapons hunted beasts to drag back to the camp, but to call it ‘sharing’ when the stronger among them took most of it and left naught but scraps for the weakest, with no true care given to their wellbeing… It was repugnant. Selfish. Barbarous.
Emet-Selch didn’t know why he bothered to torment himself like this. What good could come of observing these hopeless sundered creatures? The Unsundered had long determined that the pitiful remnants of their people were utterly beyond hope. Centuries past the Sundering the creatures had at least settled down into something resembling people, an improvement to be sure from their initial nigh-formless existence, but his keen sight could clearly see that naught had truly changed.
The jagged edges of their hopelessly fragmented souls cut his heart each time he observed them. Pale, almost imperceptible shades scarcely detectable in hopeless thin, dim shards of souls, utterly abhorrent. Here and there in these pathetic creatures he caught a glimpse of familiar hues, and that made it all the worse, seeing someone he had known reduced to… This. Some days it was all he could do not to weep in despair.
The creatures didn’t even have a language yet, pointing and grunting to each other to ‘communicate’. Oh, their meaning was easy enough to take, to be sure, but even to his ears there were no words, merely ideas.
He supposed they could be taught, after a fashion. Not long after they had returned from the Rift to the shattered world they had come to call the Source and beheld the ruins of their home, moving in silent shock through the broken world and its barely-extant ‘inhabitants’, they had determined to preserve what they could of their fellows.
To that end they had created a series of crystals bearing memories of the rest of the Convocation. Who they had been, spells they had developed, the powers entrusted to their offices. One for each of the three of them, should they somehow fall, and ten more for the remainder who had fallen in the Sundering. There should have been eleven, in truth, but his argument to memorialize the Fourteenth seat had been overruled by the others.
Afterward he had been tasked with seeing if he could locate what remained of the others and use the crystals they had made to restore them to some semblance of themselves. The experiment had been a success, after a fashion. While the shards they had raised back to their offices were able to communicate and understand, and access some portion of their former potential, they lacked their former brilliance, their creation magic, so much of their abilities… Still, they were useful enough, and able to more readily interact with their peers.
Emet-Selch should have been unmistakable as he moved through the settlement, nigh thrice their height, his aether a blaring beacon despite his lack of a physical body. Yet none of them had the ability to perceive him, and he passed unremarked as he watched. A man laughed as he snatched an old woman’s food for himself, easily swatting off her feeble attempts to get it back, and Emet-Selch decided he’d had more than enough, turning and stalking from the camp. At least the forests were still forests, even if the people were not truly people.
Well, if their plan worked, it wouldn’t be an issue forever. They would restore their world, making it whole again. The creatures would benefit too, he supposed, eventually becoming whole again, not that they would properly appreciate it without knowledge. He sighed deeply. The scope of their work was massive, and he wondered if it could even be done, but there was naught for it. Things could not be allowed to remain as they were. He would not suffer it to-
His musings were interrupted by the sound of a woman screaming nearby. He sighed again, even deeper, and turned towards the sound out of a morbid curiosity to see what pitiful method of death would befall the owner of the voice, teleporting near it.
A young woman barely out of adolescence cowered in front of a coeurl that had surprised her as she gathered berries, the pouch laying spilled on the ground as she whimpered, the beast growling as it readied to pounce.
Emet-Selch pondered for a moment if he should try to help her, and had almost resolved to do so when a shout came and a spear hit the beast’s side, and the sight he had least expected and truthfully never wanted to behold burst into the clearing, rushing in and grabbing the spear back and brandishing it at the creature. The face of the man was unrecognizable, shaggy brown hair and beard and unremarkable grey eyes as meaningless as any of the others, but the soul that lay beneath it…
As broken as any of the others, pale and nigh-imperceptible, but the color was utterly unmistakable. He had known it since childhood, had loved its bearer for eons, and his heart had shattered along with it when Helios had returned to Amaurot just before the Sundering, nearly making it to his side. But it had been too late, and he’d watched heartbroken as Helios had shielded him and the others, sacrificing himself to buy them time to escape into the Rift. The damnable Light of the Sundering, too close, had reduced his body to dust, and his last sight as he had fled was of that beloved soul cracking to pieces…
And here, now, was one of them, the once brilliant amber dimmed to nearly nothing, but still so recognizable. He raised his hand to help, but it was already too late. The man had turned to yell at the woman, pointing back to the settlement, and the moment of distraction had been all the coeurl had needed to attack. The woman screamed again and ran, and the man fought back, burying the spear in the beast’s side, sending it crashing to the ground as he collapsed next to it, his abdomen torn open and a deep bite to his neck, blood flowing from his wounds.
Emet-Selch shouldn’t have cared. It wasn’t Helios, after all, just a pathetic shard that had been undone in an instant. Helios would have subdued such a beast with laughable ease, And yet the scene cut him to his core, and a strangled cry rose in his soul. Because even as much as the man was not Helios, his actions were so very much those of his lost love. Helios had always rushed to the aid of others, heedless of his own safety, ever the consummate hero. Just as the man before him had.
He approached him, scanning his wounds with a sigh. The damage was far too great. Perhaps if he could have been ascended he could have been preserved, at least, but there was no way of doing that. He cursed the others for a brief moment as he crouched over the dying man, pity welling up in him for the first time. Here at last was proof that at least something of Helios remained… And that perhaps something of who his people had been lingered within their shards.
He could not watch this and do nothing. The man would die, that was inevitable, but it would be intolerably painful and slow. And this shard, this ‘hero’, deserved better. He adjusted his size to match the man’s, hand held above his chest, and invoked one of the magics of his office, unbinding the man’s aether. One of his duties as Emet-Selch had been to assist the hopelessly injured and the aetherically deficient who could not do it themselves in returning to the star. He hadn’t expected to ever do it again, and yet here he was.
The man’s ragged breathing and whimpers of pain eased as the familiar blue glow of a return surrounded him, and Emet-Selch let out a sigh, resting his hand on the man’s cheek. A pointless gesture, the man wouldn’t be able to see or feel it, but it felt right. He gasped when the man’s hand moved to the spot, as if to cover the hand with his own, and pale grey eyes seemed to lock onto his own. It couldn’t be. None of these creatures possessed the ability. And yet the man smiled at him as he faded away, and somehow Emet-Selch’s already shattered heart broke again.
Emet-Selch stared at the spot for a moment, his mind churning. Impossible. This had been nothing, he had seen what he wanted to see in the gestures, and this was just a moment of weakness. Helios had betrayed the Convocation. There was no value in these creatures, this man’s actions were just proof of it, how frail and pointless their lives were, dying over and over in the simplest of ways. None of it mattered.
And yet.
For the first time since the aftermath of the Sundering had numbed him and his observations had hardened his heart, Emet-Selch wept. For Helios. For Hythlodaeus. For his world. For all that had been lost and taken.
And yet. And yet.
Hope he had thought lost swelled in him, and he raised his hand, gathering aether into a curiously shaped crystal, as brilliantly amber as his beloved’s soul had once been, a symbol of the sun etched upon its surface. He clutched it to his chest as he began to enchant it, filling it with his memories. Helios’ life. His death. The magics he had once used. Every single little detail he could remember, he poured into the crystal. Even this encounter, brief and sad as it was, and a dedication.
“Herein I commit the chronicle of the traveler. Shepherd to the stars in the dark. Though the world be sundered and our souls set adrift, where you walk, my dearest friend, fate shall surely follow. For yours is the Fourteenth seat—The Seat of Azem.”
