Part three of the code contains stringent provisions' respecting the sale of liquor on or adjacent to any public works, and this was brought into force along the line of tne Transcontinental as soon as construction was begun.

In accordance with the general practice in such cases, the proclamation was withdrawn from time to time in the sections where the railway has been completed. This was in order that the territory might then be administered under the usual provincial laws and the authority of those who are responsible under the privy council decision respecting the retail sale of liquor.

The proclamation just issued was in consequence of a report by the Transcontinental commission that the railway in the districts mentioned is completed and that this portion of the code might therefore be withdrawn.

Transplant yourself, so you can escape the root of this, if the root of this, is someone different, like acorns and the pollen travel in the wind.

I just don’t think this is what it means to win.

Take some sort of essence, hide it in your skin. Take some sort of efferesence, and that’s when we will go again. The night sky riots in the green lost lights, but we never let go of sight, we never let go, what’s a sensory organ that can be a different friend than eyes? Stuck safe in the ground, is this how we define? Identity doesn’t need to lapse, become a fixture instead of a ghost.

But every trunk is haunted then, and where do we even begin, if that’s what’s left at most?

The sun can shine up to twenty-four hours a day, the sun can hide, but you can never control when it goes away. What does it mean, to adapt arboreal, if we dance around identity? How do we stay connected in the way that we developed with the transplant transcontinent, are we not content? Did we grow?

I looked at the fields with the bushes and stones, and thought, wow, is this not where I’m from? But hey, they gutted the forests, and hey, the ecosystems shifted maladaptively at the hands of the sentience we know. 

So then again, what’s the point in shifting?

I think they call it treasure, but it is the trunk that they stole.

Internal Grammar Nazism

It's no fun to watch my native language decay. Of course, all languages are in continuous decay and always have been, being continuously renewed by obnoxious neologisms at the same time. This is a natural and probably harmless process. But that doesn't make it any less aggravating to witness.

Here I will keep a list of irritating mistakes that have become so common that they threaten to become the new standard. I don't correct these mistakes when people make them, of course, because that would be rude and insufferable behavior. But that just means the frustration builds up inside and has nowhere to go. This is where it will go from now on.

Confusing "set" with "step"

This is most often seen in the phrase "set foot". If I have never even set foot in a place, that means not only have I never been there, I have never even lightly set my foot down within its boundaries. But this has been mostly replaced by the nonsensical "step foot". "Step" is not a transitive verb. It does not take an object. You don't "step your foot". You don't step anything at all. You just step. And to me, setting a foot is something even less than a full step, as the latter seems to imply putting my weight on that foot, moving my center of mass forward onto it, and into the space in question.

But wait, there's more! I have also seen "set out" replaced with "step out" (in the newspaper, even). This one is especially bad, because in context these can have opposite meanings. To "set out" is to embark on a journey or project. To "step out" is to leave the room or be absent from something. So the person who sets out on a project is the person who decides to take it on, whereas the person who steps out on a project is the person who decides not to.

Misspelling "lose" as "loose"

These are different words with different meanings and pronunciations, but more and more the latter is replacing the former. The correct usage: I "lose" my keys, but a faulty screw in a machine might be "loose".

Scrambling "how it looks" with "what it looks like"

The result of this confused combination is the embarrassingly awful gibberish phrase "how it looks like" which has now ubiquitously replaced the former two.

The word "how" is an adverb. In "how it looks", this adverb describes the verb "looks". The thing looks some way; we want to know how it looks.

The word "what" is a noun. In "what it looks like", it is the object of the preposition "like". The thing looks like something; we want to know what it looks like.

"How it looks like" just seems like it has a missing word. How it looks like what? The word "like" has no object!

Confusing "downside" with "downfall"

A "downside" is a drawback of something. "Upsides and downsides" are pros and cons. A "downfall" is a fall from grace, i.e. a loss of power and prestige, or the cause of such a loss. Part of the confusion between these two may stem from the fact that a disadvantage of something may sometimes be the cause of its fall from grace. In that case that thing's downside was its downfall. The key to remember is that a downfall is an event in time, or something that caused that event. If there is a downfall, there should be a time period before the downfall occurred and a time period after.

"Transgender person"

In English, you have to add a suffix in order to turn a noun (like "gender") into an adjective (like "gendered"). In particular, the suffix "-ed" is the one to use to turn a trait noun into an adjective meaning "having that trait". Adding the "trans" prefix does not change this fact. We don't speak of the "transcontinent railroad" or a "transocean voyage". Those need "-al" and "-ic", respectively. These grammar rules are baked into our brains; any native English speaker who hears "transgender person" immediately knows it is incorrect. This error vividly illustrates how leftists have been trained to ignore their own common sense in favor of what they are told to think.

So how did this one wind up being political? It shouldn't be. It's just a simple grammar mistake. The left has rebelled against the correct word, "transgendered", only to artificially create something to be offended about, because they draw their strength from being offended.

Confusing "progress" with "process"

People more and more often say something is "in process" instead of "in progress". This error is probably influenced by the phrase "in the process of". Notice that this phrase uses "the". That is because "process" is a singular noun, and therefore requires an article. "In process" is therefore grammatically incorrect. "Progress" is a mass noun, and hence requires no article. Another problem here is that the meanings of these words are different, though that point is more subtle.

"One of the best by far"

If something is the best, it is the best. If it is the best by far, then there is a lot of distance between this best and the second best. In other words, it is not simply the largest of its class, but is in a class by itself nowhere near the next-bests.

Sadly, most people now reflexively add "by far" to any statement of greatness, seemingly without having any meaning in mind for that phrase. "One of the best by far" is a phrase I hear everywhere now, though it makes no logical sense. How can something be one of the best by far? If it is only one of the best, and not the absolute best, then it is in the same class as the others. There is no way for it to be distant from them.

Don't even get me started on "one of the absolute best by far" or, God forbid, "quite possibly one of the absolute best by far"!

there was a cat who lived by the sea.  each day, it pawclawed its way through the sand saying lovely things which only cats could understand.  

the seawater was full of salt and strange things, but the cat did not mind. rather, the cat enjoyed the peaceful view as the tide swayed in the arms of the moon.  when it rained, puddles of water would form in ungross and drinkable ways in the indentations the cat left in the sand, and the cat would drink and be happy.

one day, the cat was joined by a bird migrating in a quite birdly way who decided to stop by the sea for a rest before continuing to transcontinent the earth.

"hello," said the bird "hello," said the cat

the two became close, for they were both quite lonely, although they were happy as well.  the day soon passed, and the bird could not both stay and transcontinent, and being as birds are, their time of parting arrived.

the bird saw many things

many seas and many shores

but the bird did not forget the day it spent with the cat

watching in silence as the tide danced in the arms of the moon
